Do you have a Steam? It would be awesome if you joined our steam group so you know about the news we have for the guild in general. We plan on making the guild in beta. Also, it would be nice if you participated in our vote for our Guild Name:

Yeah commando was Anet's April's fool. The vid is still awesome though :D.

I see people passing the word for dynamic events and organized teams flocking to fight the dragon with people assigned to different roles. At least that' what my GW1 guild plans on doing when the game gets released.

Who can help the Guild Leader out with the keys? :p If they are being distributed in the next three weeks or so, I am going to be out of the country and on limited or not fast-bandwidth internet in the PRC so I won't be able to catch any Tweet updates or Facebook while I am gone.

So just let me know on Steam if the keys are going to be leaked for us very soon!

I don't understand why everyone compares EVERY MMo to WoW..yes its quite possibly the most successful franchise, but ask many WoW'ers..the old school die hard guys and the game has gone to over multiple patches and a long time.

Before WoW..DAoC existed, that game was truely incredible, I don't need to go into the details of what you could do in DAoC- that you still can't do in more modern MMO's..the RvR alone in that game kept me satisfied for years..but alas..all candles lose their flame at some point.

I've read through GW2, and after playing GW I just don't feel like it is for me. Everything felt way too linear and the best aspect I could see were very intense and impressive visuals..coming from someone who played MUD's before MMO's...graphics are not everything.

Hopefully GW2 does good..but the MMO market has been slacking for a good 10 years now..its honestly pathetic how all the top companies continually try to pull the 'best parts' of every failed and successful MMO alike; in order to create a 'winning title' but they won't achieve this with just good lore. You need mechanics and balance to create a fun environment.

    We shall see

WoW was just the standard for success. It's the most popular, it's the big guy in the MMO world. You don't compare things to the worst because it makes everything practically look like gold. You compare things to the best/most successful!
GW1 wasn't as game changing as GW2 looks (i.e. a lot of GW2's core mechanics are different from standard MMOs).
GW2 isn't pulling the best parts of successful MMOs, IMO, GW2 and other games like Tera or maybe Secret World are changing the standard of MMOs.

Maybe I have high expectations, but since Arenanet has spent 4+ years making the game... I don't think it will flop because I am confident that Arenanet is making a game that will make us be "absolutely blown away by the game the first time we experience it." :3

Well, maybe my wording was not quite as it should have been, I understand it was a huge success and still is, despite what anyone can argue.

But WOW didn't invent the wheel.

When people discuss "game B versus WOW" they make it seem like WoW had all these hugely contributing concepts that no one else had. And, as we all know, WoW was not the first MMO..the main reason being it was such a huge success is the fact that it was so easy, from level 1 to..what are they up to now, 85? The game doesn't offer anything too difficult..the hardest things about the game are pre BC level 60 stuff and that is long gone..

Regardless, WoW doesn't offer too much and like any online game, was eventually killed by patches and continually trying to accommodate to everyone's complaints of balancing issues.

In regards to the ease of the game, look at EVE..quite possibly one of the largest learning curves out there..and while the mechanics may differ visually..the concept is still the same..hit buttons 1 through 9 for different attacks or maneuvers. Although EVE had a fingernail's worth of the success, due to the advanced learning curve mainly.

I am waiting for the MMO that has all the 'successful' elements of the past, the longevity of WoW(but with much more content..the game was so easy people were begging for more dungeons by the time they hit max level cap) But one that presents new mechanics to the MMO world..AoC Had this, but also had just as many downfalls..the ability to direct which way you swung your weapon and also direct which way your blocking was oriented..this was genius! Unfortunately, ping and MS issues did away with this aspect of realism almost instantly. I am looking for something new!

We could pick apart every MMO in history and list their pros and cons..but at the end of the day, I personally just don't feel like GW2 has the 'future-proofing' aspects to make it a long term success..Yes it will have stunning visuals, yes there will be a few newly manipulated mechanics..but at the end of the day, its the same MMO you MMO fans have been play for nearly 20 years..just a new title.

But, if you enjoy it, that is all that matters. Sorry for the long post, I'm drunk. ;)

    And I like my MMOs

wat? Have you played the demo at all? or is this decision that GW2 is the same game different name from what you have heard about the game?

Also, explain your opinion. I don't see how a bad conclusion can be made about a game that isn't even out yet. I understand criticism and how the game won't be perfect or for everyone but not this. If it is going to be like every other MMO, why would they spend 4-5 years making it? I believe it will have similarities to other MMOs but will not be another game left in the dust.

Don't know what you really meant with how WoW didn't invent the wheel, but I guess it was new and exciting when it first came out? Haven't really seen any other MMORPGs that differ from the WoW-esque style. One of the reasons why I like GW2 is that it is different than point and click MMOs!

I wouldn't really question Eve's success, the game is pretty old and still has hundred of thousands of subscribers. Sure, that's not many compared to WOW, but it's still one of the top 5 MMORPGs out there.

GW2 offerings dodging and blocking. That alone seperates it from 99% of the mmos out there. That's a huge selling point for me. Currently I'm deciding between GW2 and TERA, depending on how successful each is and the community. Both of those games offer far more combat "skill" (I guess is the best word to use here) than any other widely known MMORPG out there.

I wasn't claiming that EVE wasn't successful, but due to the learning curve and realtime leveling, many steered clear of it.

I personally enjoyed it. And you comment about it being in the "top 5" mmos..thats a pretty list to get one seeing as most recent MMOs have been flops with dead servers within the first year.

About WoW reinventing the wheel, I just meant that its not the first MMO..it was for many, especially younger gamers. But there were far greater games before its time.

And as far as my 'accusations' (if you will) of GW2 not being all that spectacular, I understand I can only speculate as A: I've not played and B: My only knowledge is leaked info and/or info on the official site.

The game is incredibly limited for classes/professions. And I feel that the classes are all ones that have been 'done' several times..the only new aspect I found to be interesting was a thieve's ability to, essentially, morph their hand into a weapon based on the mob they stole from.

I feel like they are trying to set themselves aside from the pack with having no dedicated healer/support class..a poor choice in my opinion..plenty of people enjoy healing/support..its a completely essential role in PVP.

And, I understand the game is still in a nubile form but the SS and videos don't impress me as far as graphics..the animations are pretty fluid..but I hope they lose the super bright color schemes and take this from a 'cartoon' feel to a more 'real' look.

Obviously, everything I've mentioned is speculation and only based on other peoples' reviews and the GW2 website..but they've offered nothing so far that screams 'revolutionary' to me..which is what the OP initially posted about.

Ok I can respect that. Oh and about the healing/support class, I feel like A LOT of people misunderstand what they say and what they mean when they say that there is no dedicated healer/support class.
What they mean is that: You don't have to play the Priest or the Pally or the Guardian to heal and support your team. Every since class in the game can be the healer, the DPS, or the tank. What this does is: eliminates wait times and makes it so you have to go through the fun stuff strategically.
You can't just run in and have the Warrior get all the aggro while the damage dealers stand around and the healer plays whack-a-mole, nor are you limited to one type of set up. You have to play like a team!
Sure there will probably be Guardian-Healers or Water Ele-Healers, but Arenanet has ensured that you don't need one class the go through a dungeon or do an event. They have even played through stuff with only using 1 class to make sure it was possible! The only thing they said you had to do was change your strategy!

I agree with this actually. The reason GW2 is a selling point for me is that there is no subscription. I don't have the ability to pay a subscription anymore.

One other point, the reason they compare stuff to WoW is because it is the biggest and most successful. Who cares if they did not invent MMOs. Did McDonalds invent the burger? No. They have just executed the game brilliantly.

Okay, I'm glad we are getting towards an understanding.

I can appreciate eliminating depending on a single class for every dungeon, certain professions being 'better' in certain situations? Of course! But not needing to absolutely having a priest bubble, or a Skaldy shout, or Necro life tap etc, etc is a great idea.

As I said, the animations look really polished, possibly more so than any MMO previously (I never understood these games making the animations looking wonky when you spend hundreds of hours watching them..o.o)

I'm not saying I'm sold(and of course the goal here is not this) but I will likely pick it up if they can present a few more interesting mechanics/ideas

I've played a theif/rogue/assassin type class as a main in every MMO I've played and funnily enough, I enjoy the looks and sounds of the thief here in GW2. The steal concept is very awesome.

Does anyone know if GW2 support 3rd party UI enhancements?

Even if they don't, the UI in GW could be customized quite nicely (you could move and resize any part of the UI, you couldn't display things like the spirit's range without 3rd party mods though) so i expect it will be the same for GW2 regardless of if they support 3rd party UI mods. Even if they don't support the mods, they might allow them like they did for texmod in the first game. If that is the case, that means they won't help you if you the game is unstable because of your mods but they won't ban you for using it either.

My personal guess is that there will be no support but certain types of mods will be tolerated.

Unfortunately, no. It was said that the beta testers would be under NDA for this phase of testing. I think it's likely they already have their testers and that we simply don't know it. The good news is that they are moving testing to a larger crowd so a beta where we can participate should come sooner than later. You can be certain that when i do have new of a beta we can get into, i'll be posting here.

I hope it then the Open Beta is going to be released soon. Also, this can also give ANet some headroom to see if there is any else that needs to be tweaked since SW: TOR is out, it gives them some insight and what to refine to be better than it.

Though you can't really tell, that would just be an ideal thing for me xD

Have they confirmed conventions for 2012 yet? or do they still go with demos even if the game is released?

Finally! This isn't news really... it was expected. Good thing they finally decided to reveal the last profession. It was in "testing" for sometime now and I was really expecting this to be official until the holidays. I actually liked the name "Minstrel". Seems that they only used it for the reveal. :)

    Come Open Beta! :D

I know what you mean. Having played mesmer quite often in the first game doesn't help, i have a little something for the mesmer. I'm still going to do a charr engineer no matter what though.

I didn't care much for the mesmer. I used it enough in pvp to know what it was capable of, but it seemed like whenever I went an anti melee build I'd be against casters and if I'd go an anti caster build I'd be against melee. Balanced builds didn't work super well either.

I think I'll stick to a Ranger or Guardian as I like to shoot/smash things.

A bump for news that closed a closed beta session just ended. A new beta coming soon for select press members and other invitations.

After that one they are supposed to be vastly increasing the number of users for beta so that probably means limited access public beta.

Also confirmed announce that release is in 2012.

As a reviewer/youtube caster/editor I hope to get invite for press into this next beta and if we are not under NDA can start to share stuff.
