Im thinking Human Thief or something.
I rolled too many warrior type classes, and im horrible at tanking. D; -

(or so they say)
Im going elementalist or ranger.
If ranger probably Norn
If elementalist... dunno -
For Example, The Engineer goes in and holds aggro on the boss, while the Elementalist lays down a healing spot behind him. Then, the Thief is doing damage and taking out the adds, but the engineer gets out of range (of the boss) to heal in the healing spot while shooting his rifle. The Thief sneaks up from behind and starts attacking the boss. While this is happening, the Elementalist switched from healing spec to fire spec and started whipping out fire spells, then switched to healing spec to heal the Thief. The Thief holds aggro and then runs to healing spot while the Engineer tanks.
(this doesn't take like 3 minutes to do, but it doesn't take 30 seconds.)
The aggro system from what I've read is just "whoever is closest". But yea, anyone can tank. The removal of trinity requires you to figure out strategies to kill things and do tasks. Also, if the bosses have special AoEs and stuff, you'll have to time your strat and maybe use mumble to coordinate and control everything. (this is still PvE btw)
I just hope it doesn't flop like Brink did. They said so much about the game and then it wasn't that good or fulfilling.
Anyway, I'm waiting for the next Guildcast (GW2 Podcast) since it is Slyvari Week and we're getting all these Slyvari videos and stuff. Can't wait -
-
I am going to have a Necromancer as my main and an alt which will probably be a theif (probably will change once I play the game). Anyone have any race suggestions?
-
-
Race is supposed to effect skills/talents so i would wait to see what each one does before committing to anything right now.
-
I havnt really decided on what im going to play. Ill figure it out e when i get to character creation although elementalist so far is a possibility
-
While I will probably try out Guild Wars 2 because its free once you buy it, I still do not see what will make this game worth playing a few years down the line. The storyline is nothing amazing compared to TOR, and the dynamic events will probably get very repetitive to see a new person destroy the farm over and over again each and every 15 minute interval. I view the combat as decently innovative for an MMO since you can do a lot of interesting combos, but even this uniqueness will not make this game last while newer mmos that have even better engines arrive in the coming years. Hopefully the pvp makes me care about playing this game more than an hour a day.

My view is by the time you hit a "few years down the line" that means you paid $60 for this game for 3 years of use so even if you stop playing you got your moneys worth big time.
By that time you would have paid..
$60 + $15x12 (months) x3 (years) = $600 to play a standard MMO w/ a monthly fee.
Since I evaluate every game I play based on value per time, GW2 looks like a winner big time and its a big reason I don't like P2P games. -
And yes, I do admit that even 3 years makes the game worth playing in the long run. Hopefully they just release a polished game that everyone can enjoy. -
I'm sorry. I did not notice that Guild Wars 2 and TOR belong in the same category for comparison neither genre nor economical wise. "Decently innovative" and the "uniqueness" you are talking about will be welcomed by many of us around here who went through the same pile of MMOs with different hats that seem to never stop popping up as time goes by.
And who cares about graphics/engines as long as the game can come up with something new? Are you kidding? Have you seen ArenaNet's artistic direction? I would name their mmo a flagship for the genre wihout hesitation.
Don't worry about people not playing Guild Wars 2 after a few years. From your post I can clearly say that you are not even familiar with the previous game and the storyline (not to mention competitive PvP which seems to be even more elaborate in the next iteration). Many of us would be mad not to think that Cantha or Elona will be explorable in Guild Wars 2 one day.
We are really interested in the upcomming MMOs you are talking about and I believe you would like to share why are they worth playing and waiting for and IF in any case they are comparable to Guild Wars 2.
Peace! -
Honestly if I thought En Masse was going to "Westernize" Tera properly and get an acceptable population on all the servers as well as minimize hacks/bugs/gold farmers, ect. Then I would probably play that over GW2. I guess only time will tell. -
I would not consider TOR to be similar to WoW, from what I have seen, it looks clunky. Every click seems lagged....
I for one can't wait for WoW 2.0. We all know Blizzard has had a secret production for awhile and I assume it is a new MMO. -

I tried to get into TOR but watching the developer walkthrough completely turned me off, the combat looks so boring I doubt I would be able to stand it for more than a week. And it just does not look graphics wise like a game coming out in 2011. The first thing my friend watching the video next to me who had heard nothing of TOR said was "Man, how old is this game?" -
Or you don't want to try it because some people say TOR is just like WoW?
Explain your logic pl0x
Also, people believe GW2 is the best because it's differentiating itself from the standard of MMO genres (AKA WoW and all other games trying to be WoW). Some just see TOR as another WoW clone, others think it's great. When they say that TOR is bad, they probably mean that it just looks like a clone of WoW therefore not different or interesting/good.
Developers need to get in their heads that just because one game is successful making a similar game will WONT make your game successful. So... i'm interested and supportive of Arenanet because they are very true to their word and they look more giddy about the game than GW fanboys!
(Oh and BTW, I'm not saying TOR = WoW or anything, just making a statement.) -
I'm really looking forward to playing this game, as I've been basically following it for the last two years or so. Pretty neat that you guys are putting together a NBR guild. I never got the chance to play Guild Wars because I was heavily invested in DaoC at the time.
Started playing MMORPGS with UO (pre-Trammel), then some Everquest, to Asheron's Call, Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot, Age of Conan, Warhammer, et cetera. -
So........ Does anyone know if it is being released this year?

Yeah its not going to be this year (2011) only 4 months left and Beta is not even out yet.
But lets hope for mid 2012. I do not want them to rush it for any reason anyways, but I would love beta just to tease my curiosity and keep me satisfied till full release. -
I'm with Vicious, as I hope they take as long as they need. If recent history is any indicator, it's best to refine and polish the game as much as possible before going live. Warhammer and Age of Conan easily come to mind, two games that I had high hopes for, but were pushed out the door despite numerous flaws (zero end game and content Funcom, really?). I hope that doesn't happen here.
The problem is when developers get pressure from the financial investors and suits to push a game before it's ready for mass public consumption. The whole its, "good enough, push it through anyway," mantra has been happening far too often lately with games.
Here's to hoping they get all the time they need, and then some. It sucks waiting longer on what looks to be an amazing MMORPG, but in the end most of us will be happier with a more robust and polished game. -
Asura week between Gamescom and PAX.
Gamescom gets PVP, Slyvari and Asura (dunno about news or anything)
PAX gets 8th profession (big news) AND/OR Beta Release Date (after PGW).
Beta around October and November, then either Release in December (depends if my theory is incorrect or not, and they get it on time) or Release in like January/February.
2 known things:
Release date will be known by the end of 2011.
Beta release date will be known by the end of 2011 (OBVIOUSLY).
), doing some work on it but not like doing something so so major. I mean beta testing is for bugs right? It's very close to beta so I guess they're just hyping it and already finished the betagameness.

I need to find out how to secure a spot in beta
-
Most open betas do like a beta key email or something. If they are for sale, then I'm definitely buying it so I'll have a game to play for the rest of 2011. -
Beta testing is for bugs and glitches, yes, but another major part of it is stress testing the servers with live players. Again, nothing is concrete or set in stone until arriving at that juncture. Speculation is useless in that regard.
All indications from people that I've spoken with, information released, and comments from the actual development team point towards a late spring/summer release in 2012. That's provided everything goes well, which is never a given. I wouldn't mind waiting the extra time at all, so long as the retail version is as balanced, technically proficient, servers are as stable as can be, and minimal bugs/glitches found.
First impressions go a long way in the MMO/MMORPG landscape, especially much more so nowadays as opposed to yesteryear. There's a great deal of pressure to deliver the goods and also keep your investors 'hopeful' timeline come to fruition and remain on schedule.
Basically, there's a lot of things going on behind the curtains that none of us are privy to - unless someone here is on the inside of the internal house. -
I'm not saying I definitely know how much of the game is developed, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of the game is developed already. It's like less that 6 months until release (because I believe it will be released in Dec/Jan/Feb).
If they (Anet) don't have more than half the game developed, then I'm honestly surprised and a little disappointed (4 years and they would only have half done? No way, the game would have to have flying cars and like Crysis 5000 graphics to make up for that, I jkjk.)
This is not a guess, this is probability. If Anet would be reckless enough to not complete more than half of the game by now, then they are rushing the game right now.
Anything could happen, but I'm waiting for PAX and Gamescom before I make any stoneset predictions. -
I have no proof of it being released in spring/summer "definitively", what I did say was everything pointed towards to that time period. That's not hard to interpret.
Part of developing a game is balancing the core game for both PvP and PvE. They could possibly have the graphics, engine, skins, quests, storyline, chat filter, and everything else under the sun "completed" - yet striking a balance for both the PvP and PvE elements is one of the most integral and difficult development processes once you have all the parts.
No idea wherein you're getting this "half the game" is done or not done mumbo jumbo (oh, that's right YOU said it - not me), but it would seem you entirely missed the jist of what I was saying. Seems some things are lost translation, or a lack of experience with MMORPG's in general to be the culprit.
I simply think you're being naively optimistic, but I'd certainly like to be wrong - but not at the detriment to the overall game and release day experience for fans of the game. -
-
All I'm saying is that I don't think they're like making the starting areas right now (just an example) i.e. it's in and has been in production for a long time, so at least some of the game has already been developed (Yes, there is no way to know how much of the game is fleshed out, but I was saying that it's more likely that most of the game is developed than less than half of the games is developed.)
By proof I meant, link me to things that lead you to think why it will release in spring/summer 2012. I'm sorry if there was or is any misunderstandings, I have a very limited vocabulary so at times it is hard for me to convey what it is i'm trying to say. Also, I'm sleep deprived and I get a little loopy at 3AM. I've been trying to read to enhance my verbology, but it's summer so i'm a lazy lad.
Edit: I am naively optimistic because hey! I want the game to release tomorrow! I know that it would affect the quality, but I'm impatient because I have no games to enjoy anymore, and I've been looking for my perfect game, and I believe that GW2 will be it! (dat Grammar) Maybe I'm in denial, but it will keep me motivated through these couple of months until beta release, instead of painfully watching GW2 trailers everyday and waiting at my door Scott Pilgrim style for the game to come out. -
Nah man, I completely understand where you're coming from. There's really not much out there at the moment in terms of new and fresh mmorpg's. I'm only playing Rift right now as a placeholder until GW2 comes out. I'm just as excited as you are to play the game, haven't played a thief since Shadowbane! Can't wait for that archetype.
I'm sorry if my posts came across snippy, that wasn't my intention. I only wanted to express that although a game may appear to be refined and polished on the surface, there's very many underlying nuances to contend with in terms of balance and game-breaking loopholes: a fine line.
In regards to pointing towards spring/summer:
- the development time has already been substantial, and ArenaNet and the dev team have pulled a Blizzard and intimated a few times it will be ready when it's ready.
- financially it doesn't make much business sense to lock horns with SWTOR right out of the chute and around the same time period.
- the recent string of flops in the mmorpg world have caught the eyes of many development teams and companies, including ArenaNet and the dev staff. They've made mention of this a few times and vowed to process what worked and what did not work.
- I read a dev diary feed a while back (can't find it at the moment, sorry) that there was going to be a lot more tweaking and changes to some classes abilities because some of them were imbalanced at that stage. It's a delicate process that could throw off other elements, so suffice to say they'll take small incremental steps as opposed to quick fixes.
I just used deductive reasoning, common sense, past historical metrics, and snippets from the development team here and there to arrive at why I think a spring/summer release seems the most realistic avenue.
We're all here for the same reason, because we're passionate about the game. That's all that really matters. I'm pretty tired myself, so thanks for listening to my incessant ramblings. -
Anyway, Gamescom is here tomorrow, then after Gamescom is my birthday, PAX, then school starts. I just hope there isn't so many cool Arenanet videos, so I can get my summer work done in a week. -
No idea really.
All I know is that ArenaNet has already confirmed NO release date, beta date, or 8th profession at GamesCom or PAX.
Which again, points towards a later release date. -
Oh hai der, GW2 Movie

Possibility of Felicia Day? oh god -
You just need some sleep, much like I do.

Is this likely? I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing. He's saying the release will probably be in Q4 or Q1 2012 if not sooner. -
Well, he opened with, "I'm assuming..."
Who knows, anything is possible however unlikely I think it to be. The rumor mills are definitely in overdrive at the moment. -
I was talking about what Herr Roy Raven said. "ArenaNet said the open beta will be much much closer to release." I remember Anet saying they would get open beta in 2011, so I presumed his guess for release.

The closed beta, yes, is similar to a friends and family atmosphere in-house and internally, along with some possible media characters, and paid professional testers. There could be a few other sources, but that's generally what comprises the core test group (at least with most companies) and the NDA goes into effect. -
Sylvari week is up, must say I am disappointed in their starting zone and their homeland. It doesn't look unique at all and I was expecting so much more.

About GW2, there will be different servers for USA and EU due to the different time zones correct?
If so, EU NBR members will not be able to join the USA guild..
Is anyone willing to start a pro European NBR Guild? =) -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
As Guild Leader, I am currently not going to discriminate the guild into regions unless new information or changes has to make it so. Otherwise, there will not be a dedicated EU and US guild.
If you like to make an European-only guild, you may do so and create one, however the guild we are running is going to be region-free until further notice. Also, the current guild is going to be the "official" NBR guild, so yours is going to be separate from the current one. -

Having everybody together is better because even in one region or another there are people that do not play @ standard times.
So if I get on in the middle of the night I may find Na people sleeping but find some Eu people to play with.
Also I think due to how there will be guild related things to do in game the more we can span out our playtime it may have a positive effect on our influence on the server. -
Anyway,i am glad that the servers will be region free, if so then i will join the official NBR Guild, i am not interest for the creation for any dedicated EU Guild.
I used to be a dedicated player/officer in a serius European guild back in Vanilla WoW for several years, now i dont have time for serius gaming because of work, however i will glad to join in a friendly guild when time comes, cheers =)
