Yeah I am occupied all day for the weekend as well, dad duty comes first. I'll be one tired red bull pumped beta tester come nightfall though.

Haha, i'll be spending the 27th upgrading and building desktops so that relatives can play the beta. Depending on how we decide to do this, i might bring the G73 and play the hell out of the beta with them when i'm done messing with computer components. I should have the 28th and 29th all to myself on the other hand. :D

All we know is what was included in the e-mail we got after registring:
We'll definitely let you know once we know. My guess is that we get to download the client slightly ahead of the servers going online.

After getting some Diablo 3 Beta time in this week I am very excited to play GW2 this upcoming weekend.

Sort of sad to see so few votes on the survey for GW2 pre-order that may be a bad omen for the size of our guild. Though I am quite fine with a small guild of 5-10 people as long as we all get along and are active. Hopefully despite my random play times when ever I get on there will be atleast 1 or 2 people on to tag along with.

Here is hoping we can get the client downloaded sometime within the first half of this week.

I'd probably join you guys too, just don't know exactly how much time I'll be able to spend on the game over the summer yet.

I have the digital edition, and did not know about the NBR GW2 until recently (after the survey closed at least).

Mine as well, overnight shift, kids, editor/reviewer duties, youtube schedule.

I'll just play when I can play, and hope that we get enough people that we have somebody on at all hours.

can you tldr me why should one play gw2? — what are the signature moves of the game?

Briefly looking through vids on youtube it felt like "just another okish, aionish mmorpg". No sick graphics (not like i care), no innovative pvp modes, nothing like wow in terms of pve or world design, pretty standard combat system.

Heard its sick and pro in terms of pvp but i just cant figure out why and how.

My reason for buying GW2 instead of other MMOs is because of no monthly payments.
F2P MMO type games dont count because of the Pay2Win aspect on most of them.

Rather pay up front than getting my wallet leeched.

Isn't anything better than a game known for "pillar humping" and "bubble-hearth" as its signature PvP moves?

You get involved in server-vs-server-vs-server pvp wars in gw2, which crushes the scale of even the largest wow pvp's. That on top of regular style pvp.

I can think of quite a few things and tastes WoW doesn't offer that other MMOs do.

200 vs 200 vs 100 vs 50 vs lots more smaller groups?
    Castle siege?
    open pvp?
    XP loss on death?
    Any penalty whatsoever for dying?
    Plentiful advanced opponents?
Classes that are not guaranteed to win in almost every situation?

GW1 had very interesting PvP. It required more skill and practice than the typical /faceroll WoW offers. It also offered a better community and better opponents by FAR.

In a nutshell, when your game of choice's signature moves are "pillar humping" and "bubble-hearth" you have no right to make fun of any other game's PvP.

i dont really want to bring wow into this. Lets just stay last time i was doing a castle siege and 50v50 i was enjoying 5-10fps.
Btw wow was kinda fine in terms of large battles. I mean it was all good till it reached critical number of 200 or so. At this point server crashed.

Not to say that 100v100 is particularly entertaining, just stand there and press 1-2-1-2-1-2.. duno.

Tbh I really have no idea just how good the pvp will turn out to be, all I know from the videos and all is that they'll be quite epic and dynamic. Hype is quite a force to behold in this industry.

Wait till the coming weekend, loads of real reviews and impressions regarding everything will come out as its NDA is lifted then.

So what you are saying is that your choice of hardware holds you back.

Part of a game's appeal is how well it actually performs for mass PvP. While GW2 seems to have modest requirements, we do not know how true those requirements are.

Note, the "skill" in mass pvp isn't how many buttons you push, its about teamwork and leadership, and listening and social skills. It's about attacking the right targets in coordination with dozens of other people. Sometimes its about running away with style (lure enemies into artillery). Sometimes its about dying with style as a distraction. (How long will it take 100 enemies to kill me? Let's see!)

Pushing buttons of any number is a silly way to measure skill anyway as MMOs remove or nerf reaction time and allow macros to push dozens of buttons in a row and in certain order if necessary.

I sincerely hope GW2 is able to bring mass PvP to a new level.

What you are saying sounds good on paper while in reality it turns into
    - raid 1 goes front gate,
    - raid 2 goes back door,
    - team A wins because they have 100 more people and team B doesnt give a fk about the castle because it doesnt actually give you anything cool aside from bonuses that no one wants nor defending it for 4 hours before you need to sleep is particularly fun

Thats Aion and Warhammer for you. Still fresh in my memory.

Game bring no surprises, its not like there is suddenly a backdoor through kitchen that no one knew about. Its fun only for the first time, then its just execution and unstoppable force vs immovable object.

As for my hardware its always well above recommended and i wasnt the only one with fps problems. Aion even had a feature like "turn off models" and only showed health bars instead of characters. It didnt help though because spells were "too beautiful".

Are you talking about a specific game here or is it just your imagination? As far as i recall pvp is either a) a game of numbers b) personal performance. If personal performance is out of the table it automatically become a game of numbers.

From an organized PvP aspect, the structured PvP has all people normalized with gear and levels in a 5v5 competitive environment if the Siege style doesn't appeal to you.

Those seem to focus on Control Point style modes right now (No CTF or single life in it atm).

One of the greatest things about GW1 PvP (at least in my opinion; I know several people who were turned off by it) is that all the weapons and armor were pretty much on equal terms with each other from the get go. In World of Warcraft for example, you could hit level 85, queue up for a random battleground, and get completely roflstomped by an enemy player with full PvP/PvE gear. In Guild Wars, you most likely obtained your max armor and a max damage weapon at level 10 and once you hit the level cap and gained all your attribute points and max health, you were on the same level (gear-wise) as other level 20s who have been at the level cap for months if not years.

Now I know some people love to prey on the weak and helpless (like joining a Newb-Only server on BF3 when you're a high rank), but Guild Wars pretty much eliminated that aspect. If you were doing Alliance Battles or Randoms all day and losing, you were either:
    1) Going rambo and getting owned
    2) Not using a balanced build
    3) Not communicating with your team
    4) Totally oblivious on how to play your profession

^^ Thats a great concept for a game that doesnt want to bring new dungeons and content and sets of armor every few months. Just give people something to focus on and bring more pvp modes and focus on balance. Thats a good philosophy imo.
We ll see how it will turn out.

I also like a game that is not over the top gear driven because it lets more casual players maintain a place in the game.

Once your out of school, have a job, a family, a second job lol. You cant spent 6 hours a day to stay on top of a game, and its no fun to be the underdog losing to the 13 year olds that do nothing but play games all day.

If your talented enough to come up with skill and precision in your play that should be enough to make you competitive, not the gear your wearing.

Lieto, I would also like to add that PvP (from what I can see) is not hitting 1,2,1,2. GW2 requires the player to be actively moving around, dodging, and what not. If you are looking for a challenge in terms of player versus player, I would recommend playing the elementalist. The reason I say this is because you will need to constantly be switching between attunements of which there are four. Other classes just switch between two weapons.

    Lineage 2.
-Open PvP, kill anyone anytime anywhere save in town. (there are consequences)
-XP loss upon death (except certain places like castle siege grounds)
-Castle sieges every 2 weeks - often multiple hundred people at highly contested sieges.

Team tactics are important and require skill and communication.

Three groups of organized people can and DO slice through 2-3 times their numbers if done right.

Personal performance is not as important as following directions.

Its not really important that you soloed down that warrior, as he just got mass ressed. The healers needs to go down and it would have been better if you had pushed them into the nukers and archer's instead of stopping to solo the warrior for an easy kill.

You wouldn't believe how many solo 1v1 "experts" are absolutely worthless in mass PvP. 1v1 PvP is often predetermined and simply a level/equipment/class comparison provided both opponents are up-to-par. (assuming both can tie their shoelaces without help)
Mass PvP requires commuication and organization on a grand scale.

This grand scale is what WoW never offers as its designed for the ritalin-generation. Everything is designed to require little preparation and no real organization as that would take too long for the intended audiences' attention spans.

You mean one by one or as raid?
If 1 by 1, then ye sure, if as raid — how can raid be unorganized?
Not sure about La2 but pretty much all mmorgs i played had an assist button – you target your raid leader (or whoever really) and you automatically acquire his target. A pack of rangers can destroy anything without talking to each other and while pressing 2 buttons doing unhealable damage on any closest target.

Only real game where organization is everything — is EVE.
Other games got predetermined pvp scenarios and is always about numbers simply because organization is done by the game itself, it tells you where to go.

Although i cant say first scenario is the most fun. I recall waiting for everyone to come online for hours and insanely strict event schedule ><

GW2 weekend beta client is up for download!

Here's the link to the downloader:

    http://cloudfront.guildwars2.com/client/Gw2.exe

Arenanet posted this on the forum but then took it down because they forgot a language explanation for how to use this or something.

I've already downloaded the whole thing, 13 GB. It'll be a .dat file in the same directory as where you put the gw2.exe.

Yes I need to pick a server thanks for the post c4sc4.

It's does not matter the name in the long run just the location but I'll pick a name I like :D

I like Sorrows Furnace, Crystal Desert, and Darkhaven. Anybody have a vote they want to cast to one of these servers or a different one entirely?

When I get off work tonight I will make a video announcing my world on YouTube because I have a lot of co-casters and fans that will want to make sure they join.

    Here's my insight.

I know 4chan is playing on Anvil Rock (and possibly Sea of Sorrows / Sorrow's Furnace) and Reddit on Yak's Bend (and possibly Darkhaven / Crystal Desert); those from other social media sites like Penny Arcade, Yogscast, and Something Awful seem to all choose Yak's Bend. It could be interesting playing on a server with large playerbase dynamics like those, but conversely it could be imba and annoying.

Also my rough guess is that overly "gothic and cool" server names like Darkhaven will be overrun by teens who are attracted to these things by nature.

    All speculations of course.

My preference for world candidates (purely based on names) factoring in what I've stated above would be:
Kaineng, Eredon Terrace, Isle of Janthir, Deldrimor, Eternal Grove (maybe not this one).

Finally got my client downloading, I only had the GW2.exe not the GW2.Dat file it wanted and thus it would not run.

I read up on it and it said make sure you run as admin, but I am admin and UAC is off so all programs have admin rights.

Ended up being I had to just move the .exe from the root directory (D: in my case) into a sub folder and then it worked fine. Probably some strange permissions issue where it couldn't write to a source directory.

As for server, how about Steamspur Mountains?

You mean your G73? I'll be away from home friday so if i play, it'll be on my G73 and i'll be able to gauge performance on it. Apparently, the client in it's current unoptimized beta form will be very CPU intensive and that weaker CPUs could have problems regardless of graphical settings.

Still haven't received any e-mail about the beta though, but anet did say it would take time to send them all and i'll donwload the client at uni anyways to take advantage of the uni's fast internet connection.

The G73 and the soon to come GT70 :D :D

I know it will run it I was just being sarcastic.

I do wonder how the gpu performance of the highest 5000 series (5870M from the G73) goes up against a upper mid ranged gpu from the newest series of Nvidia (GTX670M from GT70)

The cpu in the GT70 is by far better though.

I knew you were being sarcastic. :p The game will run for sure, but i'm wondering how well it'll run. Oh well, rest of the week-end will be on my i7-2600K GTX570 desktop so no worries there. GW2 will totally be on the SSD too.

I'll be selling my G73 here soon, prob snap the pictures needed when I get off work. Somebody gets to own a legendary G73JH-A2 that never had any issues as it was the first revision, also upgrade to SSD & Matte Screen.

On topic: Any objections to Steamspur Mountains as the official server choice?

I like the sound of Deldrimor better but SSM is ok too. The only little nitpick I got with that particular world name is that it feels biased towards Charrs.

There also seems to be more GW1 history and content behind Deldrimor than Steamspur Mountains:

    http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Deldrimor
    http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Steamspur_Mountains

So basically Deldrimor is the civilization at Shiverpeak mountains, while Steamspur Mountains is a southern branch of Shiverpeak mountains that later got its own name.

I posted an official announcement on servers. I do apologize for being late to the party on the decisions (programming homework is annoying).

Steam Community :: Group Announcements :: NBR Guild Wars 2 Guild

Also I will be on my desktop for most of the beta hopefully...

As current Guild Leader, I will make Tijo and Vicious Interim Guild Leaders for this Beta Weekend. I have a feeling that I might not be playing as much of the Beta as I hope due to rising C++ Programming homework I might have to attend to.

PS: I will do note that we should try to be within a server that has bigger followings like Reddit if you want to spread the gospel of NBR in general. Being in a more obscure server could lead us to not getting higher publicity. I know most people here hate joining with trolls and emo teens but if we can follow the YouTube streamers, it could be a big hit for us as a guild and for NBR. Just my two cents.
