The 5870M could overvolt and clock much higher than the 460M, a card that I might add released months after it.
Also I notice how you mention the 485M, but gloss over the 480M. The 485M launched a year later than it should have done.

the 485m should have been called the 580m, and then 580m>585m, theres barely any difference between the two other than a 7% overclock and lower core voltage.
-
Fermi overall was pretty average. 460m was barely keeping on par with 5870m, 470m took forever to launch, 480m was a laughable attempt at high end. 485m is an amazing card tho.
But aside from 460m and 485m.... the whole 400m was basically a disaster. the 8000/9000 series was much better in terms of producs and performance they offered. G92 sure lasted a long while haha. -
Good that someone remembers the facts. I have forgotten about the specifics
-
Any news about the 660M? That's the Kepler chip I've set my eyes on... any benchmarks or anything?
-
The way it's named, the 660m should perform under the 670m, which essentially is an OC'ed 570m.
-
485m chould have been the 480m but they f up and used a GF100 that is Hot as hell and need power and shoulnot been put on a note book card for any reason -
-
It took Nvidia three tries (480M -> 460M -> 470M), to create a decent 400M which could edge out the 5870M, and two of those were ridiculously expensive plus only in Clevos. That's why people were disappointed.
There was no card in the 400M series worth praising. And don't throw the 485M at me, because AMD simply yawned and equaled it with the 6970M, at like $350 less.
Now here we sit, today, and the 600M series is looking like a disaster. We already have our confusing rebrands, and our "brute force it" 480M equivalents, so there's only the GTX 680M left to keep the entire series from being a total farce.
Because this is all clearly just a stall tactic. Read it for what it is. Nvidia does not care about the 600M line, because just surviving until 28nm production is ready to pump out the refined 700Ms is their true goal. -
-
LOL Kevin. The 600 series so far have been looking very good. (Well, the Keplers that is). We have seen a 65%ish performance increase with the 640M over the 540M, isn`t that good? No it is not a 192bit but neither was the 540M. They are both going to be used in 720p/900p notebooks anyway and they shine there. It can even play a lot of games in 900p at high settings, with an ULV Sandy Bridge processor....
The GT 650M scored with 3DMark11 around 2200 points. That is how much a GTX 560M score. A 35W (not confirmed) Kepler GPU get the same score as a 75W GTX Fermi card.
We haven`t seen GTX 660M performance yet, nor do we know if it comes with a 192 bit or not. Plus we might see a solid reduction in TDP with Kepler.
I understand that many are waiting for the 256 bit GTX 680M, but be patient. Who knows, there might not be that many months to wait since the GTX 670 Ti is launching pretty soon -
Depending if the 600 series is launched close together, the 660m might not even outperform the 670m at stock, unless it's release some while after the 670m... like in the case with 470m releasing after the 480m. The names usually follow their performance for gaming at stock(in order of xxxM), when planned right. -
asdfdasgsadh; I wanted to make a decision to grab a P170HM w/ a 6990M in it or wait for the 660M now.
Guess I'll have to wait till next week :/
-
-
The 660M won`t beat a 6990M though. I hardly believe that. That is a job for the GTX 680M/7970M. -
the 580m already beats the 6990m
, o the 675m should beat it. 660m won't even perform close to it with its rumored specs.
-
(One can always hope)
I heard from a chinese forum like I said earlier that 660M is very close to the 580M. Not shure if they were talking about a 192 bit or 128 bit. Or if they have seen actually numbers/benchmarks. -
so I'm not interested in that. I don't really want to wait until Ivy Bridge, ever since the current i7 is already way more CPU that I need.
If the GTX 680M or 7970M are the only ones to outperform the current 6990M, might as well grab it now, because I don't think I can really afford those two GPUs.
I did hear that Intel HD Graphics 4000 can run Skyrim on Medium though lol
well, if it's going to perform near a 6990M, might as well grab a 6990m now -
Dude, why not wait for GTX 680M or 7970M? They say 7970M is announced end of April. That is like 1.5 month from now. If you are gonna have your notebook for a long time you are gonna regret once you see the specs of the upcoming GPUs
Its going to be ages until the next architecture and this huge die shrink from Nvidia/AMD. -
-
Ah, I understand. Fair enough
-
if i cant hit 40k or 40k+ with 680m sli at stock its a fail
and it need's minimum 2gb but 3 or 4 would be better for future profing -
Unless laptops with the 7970M are priced above $1400, I'll wait -
A laptop with a gtx 660m will not be under $1400?
-
If I remember correctly the Asus 15.6" G53SX with GTX 560M costed around that price when it came out
-
maybe it is only me, but gtx 460m kind of dominated the GPU market from september 2010 to april 2011 (6970m release), and it was pretty much in every single gaming rig.. I think it was much more successful than 485m or 6970m, as it was the mainstream success, not everybody can buy 2k lappy... anyway still cannot believe people are complaining about Fermi
I think 400m series was pretty solid except for 470m/480m, however what family had all products rock solid?
also 485m and 6970m has about 5 months in between! -
Didn`t Asus switch to Nvidia GPUs with their G-series after many problems with the mobility 5870s in the G73J?
-
I really hope that 660m will be cheaper than 670m.
What I love about kepler is lower TDP, less heat, performance increase is a plus but not a must, even if its performance is the same as 560m then i'm more than happy with it.
I just read on a Chinese forum that 660m will be the GPU in W150ER/W170ER but they won't be in P150EM/P151EM, let's hope it's wrong. -
-
Trying to chop 95W of features from a single GPU would end horribly, which is why the 680M will come from something which is much more manageable, such as the GTX 660 Ti.
-
Actually, according to some speculation the gtx 680 was intended to be the 670 TI but since AMD didn't step up their game with the 7970 and the "680" beat it, they wanted to put the 680 label for marketing reasons.
The GTX 670 or 670 Ti will probably be the basis for our 680m, since the TDP for that part will probably be below that of the 560 Ti(170W), which the 580M is based off. ---GTX 680 has a 195W TDP and reaches it well. -
^^ he answered
yes I think it should be possible to cut 95w when one can do 70w..
anyway, this is just wishful thinking -

Cut twice GT 670 = GTX 680M
Complete 650Ti = GTX 660M -

Wow, with an i3 too... That's impressive.

IMO the 680M will be around the 650Mhz area, it's quite a bit more power hungry than the GTX560ti.

So wait what exactly is coming out March 22nd other than GTX 680? Are we getting the specs + prices of all the other 600 series cards? Because right now I'm debating whether I should wait for Kepler or go right ahead and grab a 6970m laptop.
I just hope the 15.6" Kepler laptops won't ridiculously priced (like over $1500) :S -
@mitsuhide: Thanks for the comparison pics
Here are some more just to get an idea how strong the GT 650M is
Here is a notebook with GT 650M with DDR3
Here is the GTX 560M/460M/5870M:
All credits goes to wsshei11
About the GTX 680M, call me crazy, but I strongly believe that it will have the same amount of cores as the GTX 670 Ti and GTX 680. The shaders and core clock will be clocked lower than the 670 Ti. It will have the same memory bus as GTX 670 Ti and the memory clock will be pretty close this time around, since we already see crazy memory clocks with GT 650M/640M.
After all the GK104 and GTX 670ti and GTX 680 are considered mid end of the Kepler series around where GTX 560 ti was before in the 500 series. GK110 is considered the true high end of Kepler from what I`ve gathered. -
Those are some pretty sweet benchmarks. I HAVE HOPE FOR THE 660M TO BE GREAT! (at least better than the 570M)
Waiting time... looks like I'll have to be playing sc2 on low graphics for at least another month and a half. -
