I will download it & have a go at it ...

EDIT1: You have an Insyde bios not Phoenix which is quite harder & more annoying when edited
EDIT2: A062CF1F-8473-4AA3-8793-600BC4FFE9A8_1_103.ROM this is your GPU Bios I guess but Radeon Bios Editor can't alter it for some reason ... try to find another software to tinker around with it

    Keep us posted

I remember seeker_moc had a thread on Dell Sub forums here where you can request for Insyde bios mod with the preferred clocks for the GPU

PM him or navigate to that thread

MahmoudDewy please upload the unpacked BIOS from the .exe here.
I will look at it too.

    There are 2 options:

    1. Hard way:
Dowload a hexeditor and search in the BIOS for the actual clocks:
    like 550Mhz for Core = 550000 and Memory 800Mhz = 800000.
I think thats the most dangerous method but the most effective.

    2. Soft way:
Get the BIOS.fd file. Open it with PhoenixSLIC tool and let it unpack...
I have written a guide in the forum.

OK :) but i noticed after some time that my NB is getting to hot and made today a step back and undervolted my GPU to 0.9 Volts with 530/1000 clocks.

I don't think 1k on the memory will give you much benefit with the low core clock ... I tried 1k memory & 600 core & 900 memory & 600 core almost the exact same performance (not speaking synthetic benchmark, talking about gaming fps) my advice to you is to pump the core higher 550 or 600 if you can & keep the memory within reasonable limit like 900 or 950 if you want ... & watch for the temps you have & i3 like me & that processor Tjunction is 90c so operating at 75~80 is not really normal like when you have an old C2D or an i5 or i7 where the Tjunction is 100~105c ... watch out of that extra heat

I want to modify videobios. If I prescribe voltage 1.05V, then the card will work on 1.05V? When i modify the video BIOS (Radeon BIOS editor v1.28), i can choose, or 0.9V or 1.0V.

I bought BF3 yesterday and was a little disappointed with the performance on my HP DV6-3070CA (with HD 5650m). I decided to do some overclocking, originally my maximum stable overclock was 600/900 (because of heat issues). I decided to fix that. I took my laptop apart, cleared the dust (wasn't much), then I removed the old dried up thermal paste and replaced it.

I then removed the air filters that covered the air intakes to the CPU and Northbridge so that more air could come in. And since I rarely move my laptop, I left the bottom panel off (hdd/ram access panel) when placing it back onto my laptop stand/cooler. Upon boot up I was happy to see idle temperatures drop drastically. Before my CPU and GPU idle temps were in the low 70s (Celsius), they're now idling in the low to mid 40s.

I then ran Furmark to see how temps were when the GPU was at 99% (OCed at 600/900). Now the maximum temp it reached was 77 (a far cry from the 102 it previously reached). So I returned to overclocking. I ended up finding the highest I could reach without problems was 800/915. I ran Furmark for one full hour and the GPU only reached 86 degrees celcius.

I've now been playing BF3 all day and my GPU actually only reached 78 degrees, and CPU 89 degrees while playing. I feel pretty secure with these temperatures since they were previously much higher.

I also noticed the voltage changes automatically when overclocking. The default voltage was 0.90 V, I didn't change it and I notice after overclocking to 800/915 it automatically changes to 1.00 V.

TL :DR , There are no settings anything good in my bios (insyde bios), is it possible to edit it so the overclock is permanent?

Default was 550/800. Since OCing to 800/915, dusting, re-thermal pasting, temps are actually lower than they were before OCing. I did an hour test in Furmark (at 1920x1080), and a half hour in AtiTool. No problems. I've been playing BF3 all day again today, max temp it got to was 77 degrees. Only my CPU was overheating at 93 degrees I noticed (after playing BF3 for four hours). I feel comfortable with this OC. If I see any artifacts ever I'll lower the OC right away.

So, anyway to edit my bios for the overclock?
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50942.exe
That's my bios, or is it the video bios I need to edit? How do I go about this?

Also, I have my laptop hooked up to an external 23" 1920x1080 monitor. I have the laptop LCD disabled and open so it doesn't hold in any extra heat.

My setup is identical to yours (monitor etc). Hm I use MSI Afterburner for OCing though because it automatically shoots back to stock clocks when I'm not gaming, and thus allowing the auto-underclocking to 100/150 to kick in. However MSI Afterburner limits my overclocking to 715/1040 just due to its GUI being that way.

What software are you using? Does it auto-revert to stock clocks when not under load?

I tried using MSI Afterburner as well, it doesn't let me overclock. I had to use AMD GPU Clock Tool to overclock. I guess it would be smart to have it auto-overclock and auto-underclock, but it doesn't work for me. I wonder how cards can be so different in each computer. Mine I cannot bring the memory passed 915 without problems even with stock core speed. However I can bring the core up to 800 when other people have problems getting passed 650.

i have a Radeon HD 6630m in my SONY VAIO SA laptop. i use TriXX to overclock it from stock 485/800 to 655/950. however, if i OC the memory clock a bit more to 955MHz, i get the same random freeze, black screen, back to desktop with no artifacts. did you figure out if it was due to PowerPlay or not?

I dunno, the overclock I'm having right now is already a MASSIVE performance boost for me in every game (at least I'd say 30% framerate increase across the board), and it's been stable over the last year or so that I've been using MSI afterburner so, don't think I want to bother pushing it any more.

Although I am thinking of taking my laptop case apart and clean/apply some arc silver on as well.

Edit: Have you tried 3DMark06 and 3DMark11 yet? See how well your laptop performs with that overclock (my scores are in sig).

Laptopusername, what kind of performance do you get in BF3 with the 5650, and at what settings? Also what CPU does your laptop have?

@jerg: In 3DMark06 I had 8371. I imagine I would have better results if I could bring the memory passed 915. Maybe I would have gained a little had I closed everything I had running, I doubt it would have made that much of a difference though.

@Mjolner: Taking a screenshot is probably the easiest way:

I prefer a high resolution (1920x1080), so in order to get rid of mouse lag I had to disable Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filter. However I tried it at 1280x720 with Anti-Aliasing at 2x and Anisotropic Filter at 4x and it was very playable.

I actually maxed out all the settings for fun, and I was surprised to see I could still play. I probably wouldn't be able to kill anyone with the extreme mouse lag, but it was still working.. lol

    ...and it's an i5-430m.

What settings were you actually running at for 1080P, and what FPS did you get? I am not having very good performance with my eGPU solution, but whenI tried my 5650m it wasn't any better, although I didn't have the new drivers installed.

"Playable" tends to be 30+ fps (very playable = 40+ fps). Anything under 30 fps is not playable for most people.

We're talking about a 5650m laptop, I originally didn't expect more than 10fps in BF3. By very playable I meant 30+ fps. Playable was 20+. I mean you could set everything to low and use 1280x720 for 40+ fps, but the difference in play-ability isn't enough to sacrifice the graphics playing the singleplayer campaign. As for multiplayer, I haven't tried it yet, but I'll likely set everything to minimal in order to avoid any drops in fps.

Oh and as for my 3DMark06 results, that was all default settings included with the free version.

edit: but yes, jerg is right by how "playable" and "very playable" should be interpreted, I shouldn't have used those words.

edit2: Btw I should have mentioned, my 3DMark06 result before overclocking my card was 6976. An improvement of 1395 after overclocking.

edit3: Really wish I could overclock the memory more, but 550/920 = errors, even 805/800 = errors, but 800/915 is fine after an hour in furmark and an hour in ati-tool, not to mention no problems playing games... I should probably drop it a bit to be safe anyways, like 790/905, but meh, I'll take the risk.

this overclock sound me strange O.O...my little 5650,unlucky card, can go to a max of 650mhz on core with o,c...in any case in 3dmark06 with 655/900 i have a score of 8700...on my rig bf3 still run very smooth(except some cases)in 1366x768 with all on ultra except shadows(medium) without msaa(but still remains a low post process aa)and hbao(no real graphic improve)...all this without overclock my gpu,and the fps are by 25 to 35/40 fps...but even very playeble...in 1 year that i have this lappy,i noticed very big satisfaction, definitly a very good ship :)

tried 700/900 doesnt work apparently anything above 680 core makes the games crash odd thing though clocks work on furmark

My laptop is Sony VAIO EB..
Finally I found a way to mod / to edit my Sony VAIO Bios (btw, Sony VAIO use AMI Aptio Bios).
Using mmtool 4.5, I can edit Sony VAIO bios..
I can extract HD 5650m vBios and then edit/mod it (for example overvolt my default gpu voltage) using Radeon Bios Editor.
But I am afraid of flashing my modded bios ( bricked risk), since Sony VAIO Bios Recovery method still become a mystery. :(
Have anyone (especially Sony VAIO owners) brave enought to try this one, check this out :

Alright, I have modded voltage on my Sony VAIO EB vbios, but it looks nothing's changed..

    On Windows..
gpuz show that default core, mem values are changed
but on trixx and msi afterburer show "nothing's changed !!"..

    Then I check gpu core,mem,voltage on Linux, I realized that nothing's changed !! :(

Is it because RBE v1.28 doesn't support HD 5650 ??

How the hell can you get good fps in battlefield 3 with ultra or high settings?

I play at 1280x720 ( i5-430m, 5650m - not overclocked ) all settings low and i get 30-70 fps. When i turn everything to medium( expect shadows,aa,vsync ) and i get 15-25 fps which is not playable!

anything short of 90C is safe. either raise the laptop with a book or something to clear the air vents and let it breathe freely or use the notebook cooler to blow cool air at the laptop.

uninstall your drivers and anything related to the GPU through Control Panel with Catalyst Install Manager. reboot into safe mode and run DriverSweeper to clean all the leftover from the previous uninstall. reboot normally and install the mobility Catalyst 11.9 drivers.

PS: if you don't know what these are, don't bother reverting back to older versions (no offense). the general stability of a driver is much more important overvolting the GPU core.

sorry man, i don't understand at all xD
If i want to overvolt my 5650 to 1Volt, i have only to install 11.9 driver or an older one?
for what i understood, to overvolt we need to change a resistor into mainboard, right?

what i meant was that with Catalyst 11.9 and older drivers, the software overvolt/undervolt was still enabled. AMD removed that feature (software overvolt) with Catalyst 11.10 and onward. i don't know anything about hardware mods in order to overvolt.

Using Amd gpu tool got me no results.
I clocked the card to 580/830 and after 5 mins the graphics driver stopped responding and i got a message that it was resumed successfully.
Except that, i got some horizontal lines when clicking after i shut down the program and i had to restart to make them go away.
Weird..it seems it doesnt work at all for me.

Edit: Even if i set the default highest clocks 550/800 i get a message that display driver stopped responding and has recovered and i get horizontal lines that go away only after restart.
    Any ideas?

hopefully this thread isnt gunna get closed i have an acer 7740g with the exact same gpu ati 5650 1 gb i cant get it to 650 on 1 volt so my question is i saw a few users on this page who had a modded bios that had the volts at 1.1 and 1.2 now if that isnt an option how could i go about overvolting this card ? will i have to use the older 11.9 drivers and if so what tool would i use to overvolt amd clock tool ? my issue is that tool dosnt protect io and neither dos trixx so i use rivatuner and no lines :)

Just thought of popping into here and saw this thread, was the GPU really THAT popular? I remember it being in laptops that had affordable prices.

It was everywhere. Offered by far best performance/price for the mid-range at the time.

I had one. Sony VAIO. Would still have it if I didn't accidentally kill my laptop with water!
