I need my 120 fps in every game to be able to enjoy them. I can't enjoy games at low framerates because they look slow and laggy. I don't need above 120 fps though, 120 fps is perfect. I just need that framerate to be maintained.
I don't know why people keep saying high framerates only matter for competitive fps games and that other games don't need to be running at high framerates. High framerates matter for all games because every game looks better at a higher framerate, regardless of genre.
On the other hand, you can also count yourself lucky. Since you're content with low framerates, that means you don't have to spend much on hardware.I have to spend a lot in order for my needs to be met.

Wow that's some serious requirements, I like at least 60 locked at whatever settings but can live with less in heavy games like cp77/ACod. But unless you're sitting side by side, it's not a big deal to me for higher. I'd think VR you would need pretty high.
Notebookcheck does games and benchs for their comparisons. They give composite score of 55% 3060 over 1060. In games tested on both it's about 40-60% higher fps. I'd assume both are 80w cards.

It's a puke fest right now for newer games in my library I can't run at 120 fps.
I remember the days I was content with 15 fps since that was all my hardware could do. Good times man, good times. -

PC makers have tuned their thin-and-light laptops specifically for certain power levels and raising the power ceiling by 40 percent or so would inevitably mean thickening their respective chassis designs. We certainly doubt this is something OEMs want to consider now that consumers have grown accustomed to successful thin and sleek Max-Q gaming models like the MSI GS66, Razer Blade, Gigabyte Aero, or Asus Zephyrus.
It'll be interesting to see where Nvidia and PC makers go from here because the limits of cooling technology has now become an even bigger obstruction to the advancement of mobile graphics performance than ever before.
Would you be surprised if we later will see maximum TGP as in the old days? Yeah, 100/110W it will beThe OEMs ain't finished with the slim down! You just can't fill 10l whiskey in a 8l barrel.
Shave off 1 mm here and there. Then we will finally see some sleek very lightweight 12mm thick "High Performance" gaming books with the time.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021 -
OK, so we have the answer. Bro @Papusan was right all along: not very well!
For now it seems the only options left for laptop users to get closer to desktop Ampere performance are to use an eGPU with an external monitor (no AMD, sorry) or stream from own desktop / cloud service (probably only sensible for latency insensitive/lower FPS content). Sign of the times I guess.

That being said this is why I really hope eGPU solutions really start to pick up and get better in the coming years. If they can make it so the performance lose between using a dedicated gaming desktop or using an eGPU is basically unnoticeable, then I'm on board with that idea. Though I'm sure I'll be running the full desktop with a midranged gaming laptop before that happens. For some reason no one is bothering to make any real progress in that department.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021raz8020, electrosoft, Normimb and 5 others like this. -
I wonder how long it will take before Nvidia and its partners will close the loophole
Be you sure, they don't want this to scale up. Neither the OEM nor Nvidia.
Customers increase the TGP of the GeForce RTX 3080 from the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 from 115 to 150 watts
Users also report that the power consumption is so high that the included power supply can no longer provide enough energy, so that the battery is drained even when the power supply is connected. We have summarized an overview of the manufacturer-specified TGP of most GeForce RTX 3080 gaming laptops in this article.
The English site.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 users prove that lower RTX 3080 TGPs can be maximized via vBIOS flashing with 18% performance gains, but this can affect system stability notebookcheck.netLast edited: Feb 11, 2021 -
Yeah they mention that all that voids the warranty but I doubt the return/warranty team would be able to or bother to find out what some flashing was done on a baked board lol
And the 18% more perf is barely noticeable in games according to nbc, I don't agree probably at least 10-20fps imo, not bad for free though.
Edit: graphics score increase is only 7%, the total score increase is the 18% definitely not worth it for gaming etc.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021 -

And You forgot this one on top... More performance means less lower than needed sales later. If the consumers can prolong the useful lifespan from their Jokes, be you sure they will ask mama.
And Nvidia can easily help the OEM with proper blocking tools http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...blocked-in-353-00.771900/page-30#post-9984864
And we all know this mess is here to stay. Next gen machines and with new nice unwanted features from both Nvidia and the OEMs. Yeah, it will be darn pretty.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021 -

All this is going to do is lead to increased hardware failure, fradulent RMA/support requests, and even more shortages of products that are already hard to find, all because a bunch of Internet nerds think that they know better. If you want the absolute best performance, buy a laptop that has it. Period. End of.raz8020, electrosoft, dmanti and 1 other person like this. -
But as you know, they rather prefer the new nice features as Dynamic boost that will slow down cripple performance for the hardware that don't being taxed to the max.
Edit. Forgot say that the OEMs easily can throw out new sBios who cap the max power consumption with no return (new models will always have bugs and you'll have to patch them). Dell is good at this... I expect other OEMs will follow same paths. Several ways to paradise, LOOL.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021 -

How hard to get are these desktop cards really though? I'm not looking so haven't tried. I'd assume that the mid range would be the hardest to get so 3060ti/3070. Are the retailers really selling way over msrp? Looks like bestbuy will sell you a 3070fe immediately.

Apparently, ASUS insists that NVIDIA never discontinued the GTX 1050 Ti. However, one Australian retailer informed Tech YES City that it had not received any GTX 1050 Ti cards for over two years. Unfortunately, the revived GTX 1050 Ti is not selling at its MSRP from 2016. Instead, the card starts at over US$250 on Newegg, while there are multiple SKUs priced at over US$400.
The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is making a comeback to fill NVIDIA's graphics card shortage

Jarrod did an experiment using two laptops with the same exact eGPU (3090 in a Mantis I think) and the laptop with the i7-1065G7 4c/8t in 28W TDP Up config (razer blade stealth 13 I think) annihilated the setup that used a much better laptop with a 10th Gen i7-10750H 45W 6c/12t CPU. It wasn't even close. The embedded TB controller makes THAT much difference.
If the thought of using a 4c CPU makes you sick, you'll have to wait until Intel releases better CPUs that have embedded TB controllers that have direct CPU access. So far the H35 ones are the best and there aren't even any laptops with them released yet. I would imagine we'll see them soon. Hopefully upcoming Alder Lake also have embedded TB controllers.
There's also Asus' new 8x PCI 3.0 solution, but it's proprietary and frankly the laptop 3080 in it isn't worth it, although it's a VERY tempting solution. They would have to release a 15/16/17" laptop for me to consider it. Not sure they ever will.
I'm probably going to trade up to an MSI Prestige 15 with an i7-1185G7 to get the embedded TB controller. Maybe I'll wait to see what laptops use the i7-11375H.. it's very difficult to find a unicorn...raz8020, electrosoft, etern4l and 1 other person like this. -

I had some hitching problems in CP2077 in busy areas, but the funny thing was I was watching streams from people with powerful desktops and I also saw very very faint and quick examples of those same problems on their systems as well. I'm thinking mine was probably due to the cumulation of:
- TB bandwidth/latency CPU to GPU due to external controller
- The fact I have a 15W CPU
- My secondary drive in this Gram is 2x PCIe (due to the Gram's slot, the drive itself is a good one) and frankly I don't trust its performance
EDIT: It could also be optimization is garbage on CP2077...which is entirely possible that it could perform a lot better in 6 months if they are still in business at this rate.Last edited: Feb 11, 2021 -

- The fact I have a 15W CPU---only at high framerates

- My secondary drive in this Gram is 2x PCIe and frankly I don't trust it's performance-----proven ssd speeds offer very little advantage past 500mb/s however in the very near future it may matter quite a bit ala ps5 ports

Wow that's pretty incredible with only 15w regardless of the cores debate. I was done with cp77 by 1.06 but it was pretty balanced cpu/gpu usage for my quad at higher settings/raytracing w dlss auto(40fps avg) but too laggy and fps swings. RT OFF FTW!!

quad cores as ive learned through you guys is obsolete but if hes targeting 60fps it shouldnt be an issue...wont a i7 8770u give enough power for 60fps at ultra? maybe its the bandwidth limitations of TB

EVGA's 6-GPU PSU For Mining Will Fuel Your Hate for Crypto......
Of course, EVGA isn't being loud about the launch -- there was no announcement or press release. Rather, the unit just appeared on NewEgg, seemingly out of nowhere, but I guess this is logical: companies that come out with mining hardware aren't exactly popular right now. The PSU also isn't listed on EVGA's website either.

Some financial regulators recently issued clear warnings to crypto investors: prepare to lose all your money.
I think crypto will prove more resilient in practice, just because regulators are not talking about banning it, and the demand from bad actors will be there as long as it remains an effective money laundering tool. -
They may have designed it for 130w gpus but as @Papusan mentioned, if they are a competent laptop designer they will always have some power and thermal headroom. The zephyrus duo even has a higher power adapter vs the GE76 (300w vs 280w)
And Asus certainly aren't crippling their product, they are just speccing it good enough to sell.
Personally if I wanted the absolute best performance, I would get the zephyrus duo and flash it with a 150w vbios. 5900hx + 150w 3080M would be the best combo in a laptop available.Terreos likes this.
