Try disabling multicore support in your settings. That may affect your FPS, but it may help with the stuttering.

Runs great on my desktop, no tweaking required besides maxing out the settings at 1440 x 900 w/ 4xAA.

Although my 4850 is overheating, gotta get a decent cooler for it.

Anyone got a suggestion for my purple and black screen issue? I updated my drivers to the newest Nvidia 179s. Any suggestion for fixing it aside from rolling my drivers back?

 

Does it only happen in L4D? I've seen the purple texture color come up if I accidently press the Windows key while in the game (taking me back to desktop) and then maximizing the game again. That happens in every source game basically. If that is what you're talking about, then all you have to do is press the Windows key (yes, go to desktop) and then maximize again. It's the same process that made the purple color appear will make it disappear.

 

Hmm, it appears, even in the little screenshot of the level that is shown pregame and when it's loading, that movie poster shot is basically covered in purple and black boxes with the names visible. It crashes before it manages to load completely.

 

For whatever reason CS:S's benchmark stress test I always got purple textures, since having a ATI GPU it's gone away.

It could be a driver issue, and likely is, since my last GPU was an 8600M GT. Try a different driver version.

 

Yea, I suspect as much, as the previous driver worked. I'm just not too keen on rolling back as these drivers are running 10 degrees C cooler.

Nope, didn't make any changes except for the new drivers, which basically means the new drivers are almost definitely at fault.

I guess I'll just rollback when I crave too badly for a L4D fix.

 

Remove all your source games and re-install. It's a texture issue.

 

Yo this game is awesome.
I tried "versus" mode last night and I had so much fun. 4 of us on with mic's on trying to survive or attack was just crazy and kept u awake 24/7. I was with a group of all rookies like me that just got the game and we got our owned by some pro team but I still had fun and my team did not quit for almost 2hrs That doesn't happen very often.....

so i can't get L4D to run.
every time i launch it from Steam i either get an Engine Error (i need steam open to launch it, but apparently steam isn't running because the error says so)
or my game freezes 5 seconds after i get to the main menu

have you tried to close steam and then reopen it?
have you tried to open it from the desktop icon?

 

Try this, first close Steam, then go to the Steam folder (C:\Program Files\Steam) and delete ClientRegistry.blob file. Finally, open Steam again.

This will also help.

 

yea i restarted my computer once, didn't work, restarted again, tried from desktop, still won't work

deleted clinetregistry, reopened steam and it didn't work.
trying the permissions thing now...

also went back to default video drivers.
was using 181.20, far cry 2 and the witcher both worked fine

 

I highly doubt it's a driver issue. I suggest reinstalling Steam.

i figured it wasn't but i did it just for kicks.

here's part of the support ticket i sent in:

I haven't played a PC game since the days of the Delta Force series (back in 1999). I have heard about steam for a while now and was excited when I saw Left 4 Dead was half off. I jumped on the opportunity to purchase it for such a cheap price. I downloaded Steam just fine, installed it, launched it etc. 4 hours later, after L4D was fully downloaded I decided to play it right away. Well my Comodo Firewall came up and it asked if I wanted to give it access to the internet (of course I said yes) so after Comodo popped up, L4D froze. I went into Task Manager and forcefully shut L4D down. I re-launched it through Steam and I got to the main menu, do to click on Play Versus and it freezes. Well I go back into Task Manager and forcefully close it again and re-launch L4D for a 3rd time. This time the engine error pops up (how can I not be running Steam if I need Steam open to launch L4D?). I say ok, re-launch steam and re-launch L4D. Well about 10 tries later, I get one of the two erros mentioned above (L4D freezes at main menu or I get the engine error).

i just re-installed steam
i am re-downloading L4D right now, but it's gonna take like 4 hours and i have to leave for work in a little bit so i won't have time to deal with this today anymore

Since you're going to download the game again, I believe it would be better if you delete the whole Steam folder (because it leaves some files behind when uninstalling) and then reinstall Steam and download L4D again.

 

Deals still going if anyone forgot to buy it. Probably getting shut off pretty darn soon though.

well my car is dead so no work for me.
i re-downloaded steam, re-installed L4D and now it won't get past the initial Loading... screen (the green one with Left 4 Dead in the middle when you first start the game)
