killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Brace yourselves - first DLC is coming, which is... horse armour
.
Well OK, there are a bunch of costumes for Snake and Quiet as well.

Looking at those Quiet costumes I can safely say that Konami knows their priorities.

I watched a crapload of videos before pushing that buy button. It's still a bit too Japanese to my liking (and the story is kind of a crap), but gameplay should be somewhat similar to Sniper Elite 3, so that's probably the real reason why I bought it. I like SE3. -

But man oh man, Kojima/Konami/whatever sure don't care for kbam users much - they show tutorial control prompts using control prompts even though I don't have any controller connected to the PC. -

But no, I was referring to Triss' bewbies you get to see in a certain quest in The Witcher 2. Me gusta!
On the other hand, MGS V does have this sweet ass:

I gave it an honest effort, but I just don't enjoy that sort of game, kinda wish I would have sold the key rather than use it. I got two with my GPU's and sold one and kept the other. -

This game has a real painful weapon selection and some other controls or the way they behave. Switching between grenades and such is unbearable sometimes. I've already screwed up a few times trying to throw a smoke grenade. Instead I just threw a frag 'nade...
As for my first game impressions, I have to say that gameplay is really nice. Someone who likes Sniper Elite 3 will like this too. Tons of customizations too. Though I wouldn't call this game that open world, because during a mission you only get to operate in a limited space. I tried to flank a very big outpost, wasn't in the mood to deal with it, but got a "leaving mission area" prompt... What is this, Call Of Dootie?
On the other hand, you are free to engage the enemy in any way you like. Huge plus. And sometimes raising an alarm has a positive effect - like when enemy goes to one side of the map, which gives you an opportunity to operate on the other side of the base. Additional points for being able to do that while listening to Take On Me (obviously if you have found it) or any other solid 80s jams.
And of course it runs great, though I can't say it's graphically that impressive. But enough
On the negative side (I think everyone has already mentioned this) is the story. I started playing MGS V after I played TW2 and TW3, so yeah, it's kinda bleak. Also another negative thing for me (but not necessarily for others) is that this game is...(too) Japanese. I don't want to sound like a bunghole, but Japan has its own game/art/cartoon/etc. style. Some people like it, others (like me) don't. I mean the way characters are designed (although some with somewhat interesting backstories), overall "revenge" theme, particular sense of humour ("Big Boss Senpai hit me!" and my moral will increase) etc. It's not a real deal breaker, but sometimes it kinda felt weird for me and on a few occasions I went "huh?!?" But some who enjoys Japanese mass culture this won't be a negative point
Controls I already covered. For my last negative point I'll go with... open world. Yes, open world is a negative side. Oh no, I like being able to ride my horse between missions, it's great, but overall it's dead. Only outposts, occasional truck and that's it. No civilians of Afghan forces. I think they missed an awesome opportunity here actually. Ocelot claims that DD are mercenaries and work for whoever hires them. But here you only operate against Soviets (and some sci-fi mumbo jumbo, maybe there's something else later on though). It would have been more interesting if you could work from various angles. You know, complete few missions against Soviets, then get hired by the same Soviet to strike on Afghans - working for highest bidder. It's a war zone - mercenaries' bread and butter. I think there could have been some real intrigue if there was something like this implemented. Oh well...
So to sum up my first impressions - solid gameplay, but everything else could have been better. Still good game though.
Also, does Kojima suffer from USI syndrome by any chance? I heard that Konami-Kojima story, but does he have to put his name everywhere? "Episodic" mission openers are also ridiculous and annoying, not to mention contain spoilers.

So, I just unlocked Quiet. This pretty much sums up my feelings:
I know, shocking! I never thought I would feel like that as well...
Good thing that her particular set of skills aren't suitable for my playing style. Wallhack...I mean D-Dog is my kind of mission companion. Wish I could take D-Horse as well. Unfortunately I don't have Transport Specialist, so I can't yet Fulton vehicles, and covering land by foot is a real pain in the bun... -

Now in mission 16 the damn armoured vehicle blows up the freakin truck every time I reload a checkpoint (I got killed while leaving the area and now stuck in this limbo). Will probably restart the mission.

yeah, discovered that if you rescue all the prisoners in episode 10 that one of them is a transportation specialist and unlocks the 4th fulton upgrade.

I don't like that they used Kiefer Sutherland's voice either. I keep expecting to hear the tink, tink, tink of the 24 clock.
And why do you do The Sims style create an avatar when you just end up looking like Snake anyhow? I'm confused. And what's up with the supernatural crap? -

There's an option to NOT go online? I started up and it started me online automagically. And every time I start the game so far (only a few) it has me select "OK" on a bunch of online crap.

I'm having a really hard time understanding this game. It's a stealth game but can't clear the first level unless all the people are dead, and can't sneak up on someone and do a non-lethal takedown? Isn't there a way to grab someone from behind and knock them out or even kill them if need be? And it's 1984, how do they have such high tech gadgets? Plus my silencer was only good for a few shots then it doesn't work any more? Huh? Is it made out of paper or something? Sheesh.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
There will be a tutorial on how to grab and interrogate people after the first mission in Afghanistan, though for latter you will have to get a translator to be useful first.
And yes, I also found this game to be a bit weird. Then again I knew pretty much nothing about the series except that it existed and was a stealth game. Nothing about sci-fi mumbo jumbo or such. After I watched a few vids I realized that it had some weirdness in it, but only once I started to actually play it I saw the real amount of weird there was. Still enjoying this game quite a lot though, just don't think about everything else or take it too serious.
But I feel your pain. I mean, for someone who have balloons lifting tanks and such an advanced radio I find it silly they can't make a silencer worth a crap. However weapons do have unbreakable silencers, though they come rather late in game as upgrades.
For now it looks like we'll have to spend crap loads of money just to send in air supply with a new silencer... Basically this (skip to 0:26):
And another one if you're interested
PS they also have a nice parody on TW3

Oh, OK. LOOL, that video is spot on. I love it. And there was mention of "come on Chloe" in reference to 24... perfect. Guess I'm not insane (well not regarding this at least). But still that whole limited silencer thing makes no sense whatsoever.
What constitutes the "first mission" in Afghanistan? I cleared out the one camp and it said "we have control of this base now" or some such. Stopped there, wasn't sure where to go next. Is there a way to whistle for your horse a la Witcher 3? But after I took that camp I started using mortars... because. And I think it alerted other camps, lol.
But OK, I'll just accept the whole lotta weird going on as it is. I also knew little about these games, and thought it was more like Splinter Cell with a bit of realism to it, but it's just an X-files meets X-men meets Splinter Cell meets Witcher meets a whole lotta other stuff. I found it odd after the hospital that there wasn't a peep about wtf happened there. It was just like all normal to them. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
To call your horse hold radio button (check in settings what key you have for it, I changed mine to X a la The Witcher 3) and on right side you should see "Call Horse" (can also press 2 instead selecting it with the mouse).

I don't know though. The more I play, the controls are really awful.
And when you go from third person to first person your sights are offset by a good foot. So you can hit while in third person, but switch to first person iron sights and you're aiming at a wall instead.
This game is getting such high accolades, but so far I don't get the appeal.Last edited: Sep 27, 2015 -

I remember I couldn't figure out how to customize the helicopter until I read online that you have to be on the helicopter for Customize menu to show up on iDroid and from there you can make changes to helicopter, Mother Base, etc... I can't even...
I do like that there's a aim down the sight option. It may be offset when you switch to it, but I'm alright with it. So far it has been very useful to me, unlike GTA V where I never use it. Wish there was a way to directly switch to it instead of the ordinary aim.
Otherwise you should have sold your copy to me. Probably would have done good for both of us that way.HTWingNut likes this. -
I also haven't been able to figure out how to choose which tape to listen to once I'm in a tape. I have to Tab out and then back in to get to the next one. I mean I can switch between entries on a tape, but once there, I can't get back to the tape list. It says press E to get to control panel but that's to pause, play, ff, etc. No key to get back to selection menus. Maybe it's more intuitive with a game controller, but I just can't handle controllers too well with games like this.
