I think it'll be similar to last year. There was the 980M and a 980 in a laptop. We'll probably see this again - 1070M & 1080M and 1070 & 1080 in a laptop.
Perhaps next year (if we're lucky) or with Volta they will transition to entirely "desktop" class GPU's in laptops because Volta should be 10nm and have HBM, etc. This will allow them to save space and pack even the best of GPU's into a mobile device. We may even see the Volta Titan in a laptop one day with 32GB's of VRAM.![]()
I don't really want to make the Volta discussion thread, so someone else please take the heat and do so sometime next year (2017).![]()

Do you really think that Nvidia will release Volta in just 1 year after a radical manuf. process change?
I don't think we can realistically expect anything before being 2 years on 14/16 nm.
They're not even done releasing Pascal in it's completion on desktop yet... and its the middle of 2016.
Also... all these desktop class gpu's in notebooks is a bit ridiculous.
OEM's will probably go to extreme lengths to create laptops capable of taking desktop grade GPU's apparently while leaving AMD with proverbial scraps (if history repeats itself that is).
For that matter... only a very tiny % of the population would be able to afford these laptops, which would also be quite heavy as well, at which point you lose most of the mobility to begin with (except for having everything cramped into a smaller package that makes it easier to transport the thing from one location to the next) - so, basically, you're far better off getting a desktop computer in that case than a laptop. -
Volta is coming in late 2017, at least the HPC chips, because of the contract for the Oak Ridge Summit supercomputer but outside of that, we won't see Volta until 2018.hmscott likes this.

Wouldn't Nvidia offer both 1080/1080m at the same time in 2016, and it's up the vendor to ship what they can when they can?
If the 1080m is available and the 1080 is already available, both GPU's have existing laptop lines with demand for upgrades right now.
Noone is going to wait until H2 2017 for a new laptop with Pascal.
It seems like too long to wait, for either the 1080m or the 1080. -
How much are these 1070M/1080M GPUs supposed to go for? Or even just the total price of the laptop that holds them?
-
They shouldn't be much more than the GPU's they are replacing. Let's say $720 over at RJTech and the usually $1000+ samples from UpgradeYourMonkey.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/g...tx-1080m-will-use-desktop-1080-for-notebooks/
Looks like the 1080m/1070m will be nonexistent -
I was thinking that laptop prices would at least edge up, but I guess I'll see...
-
A lot of sites have been reposting that (pc gamer?) article but I'll wait for nvidia to tell us for sure first. Even the more reputable publications get it wrong or things change prior to launch sometimes.
-
They may edge up a little. But I'd expect to see them in the same ball park.
-
Can Ngreedia in worse case hardcode a lower TDP for GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, if 1070/1080M card being terminated as the mobile cards? @Prema
-
If the tdp of 1080/1070 DE is around 180-200. I doubt you will run into power issue in overclock before you start run into the temperature wall.Papusan likes this.
-
I mean in ordinary laptops for +-100wgraphics (If 1070/1080 shall replace M card in those laptops) Can NVIDIA create a TDP barrier? Or the ODM/OEM?
-
I think the mobile cards are still coming. Physically, yes. By simply limiting the power delivery setup on the card. The question is, would they really care to... Pascal are too sensitive to temperature to stress over power usage that much.
I would imagine mobile pascals are temperature capped anyways on certain overclocks especially on lighter notebooks. I think this is the first nvidia had to use vaporchamber on a small die. 980 used a cheaper cooling and was a bigger die.Papusan likes this. -
The problem is that a smaller die doesnt equal lower heat. It is more difficult to cool those chips similar to the differences between Sandy bridge and ivy bridge. Even delidded Ivy bridge was nto a good overclocker like sandy bridge was. I think this will get quite problematic for notebooks to deal with.
-
They are just repeating and sourcing the PC Gamer article, which was full of assumptions.
One should find it strange that Computex has ended, yet no other trustworthy site has repeated what PCG said.Kade Storm, hmscott and TomJGX like this. -
Yeah... Plus it's not like PC Gamer is a big authority on hardware news...
But computex ended and no official news. A few teasers of notebooks but nothing confirmed.
Any upcoming events wher nvidia would make an unveiling? Or will it come out of the blue as an announcement? -
It's all down to Nvidia's NDA right now. We know the laptop makers already have mobile cards, but we won't hear anything until Nvidia says so.
I seriously doubt we'll hear anything during the E3 conference week, but it's marginally possible.
I'm expecting a reveal in August, release in September. -
Regarding whether the cards will be MXM or not then according to this video I found, they must be.
Skip towards the end of the video where the representative confirms that the MSI GT72 series will be upgradable to Pascal. -
Yeah msi have their own setup. The gt80 titan will also be pascal upgradeable
-
lets hope so.. the kits are going to be expansive (1070M I'm thinking about you, 500$/€ minimum
-
Probably $600 for 1070M and 800 for 1080M.. I will be getting the 1080M if Polaris turns out to be a fail or not available.. I've been waiting a while since getting the 970M but really need a major upgrade now..

This sadly is true. I so hope RX 480 comes to MXM 5% slower than 1070 but at $350-400 dollars!

I'm 5000% certain a RX 480 isn't 5% slower than a 1070.

Ok fair enough! However with the gtx 970 going for $300 the rx 480 destroys it for $100 less. Especially for VR most probably.
Who knows there might be a rx 485 polaris chip that performs more at 1070 level and then vega takes over to compete with the higher end.
Sent from my SM-A500FU using Tapatalk -
If RX 480 is full polaris 10, then there won't be a 485 until Vega near october (or later). I think the 480 is indeed full Polaris 10. It's around a Fury. That means it's give or take 10-15% weaker than a reference Titan X I think? I might be wrong about that bit there. But it's more than enough performance for a $200 USD card. Blows the 970/390/390x/fury/980 out of the water in value. Don't bother crossfiring it though.
It'll be give or take as strong as a 780M SLI laptop from 2013 assuming good SLI scaling if it comes. That's about it. But from what they've shown, mobile polaris is going to be cut down. All in all I think it's barely going to beat the 980M, which is disappointing, even if it draws less power and runs cooler (which I DOUBT). The 1070M will probably compete with it, and if it's cheaper, then AMD once again will have zero place in the laptop scene. -
If RX 480 is Fury level, which is 40-45% faster than 980M, then I don't see why RX M490X wouldn't beat 980M by at least 20%. Realistically, we should expect performance between 980M and 980 (closer to the latter). I would also be very surprised if mobile AMD is more expensive than 970M/1070M, since it's desktop sibling is just $199-230. On the other hand, expect 1070(M) and 1080(M) to be much more expensive than the 900 series, especially if they omit the "M" nomenclature.
-
It shouldn't add that much premium over the current offerings. That is if sellers (like upgrademonkey) don't inflate prices to make a quick buck from the poor souls willing to upgrade their current systems
My hope lies with MSI's upgrade kit or Clevo resellers pulling out mxm cards from barebones and selling them
-
oh they will reach the market at some point as standalone parts, it will just take some time until they do. first priority will be integrated into new systems being sold as a whole
Sent from my Huawei Mate 8 NXT-AL10 -
AMD's top end mobile card is probably not going to be full Polaris 10. That means it'll be worse than the RX 480. And as a top end card, I expect over $500 USD for it. But the nVidia card under it, (970M in this case) is about $450 for the gsync model. If a 1070M is even $500, and it's stronger, then there is just no reason to choose from AMD's line. That's my issue. They need a RX 480 in MXM without downclocks for about $350 or so to make people really consider them... they won't be very overclockable, so if a 1070M is equal, more overclockable, and only slightly more expensive, especially if people are going to make custom vBIOSes for it, people are going to jump down its throat.
-
AMD's top end mobile may not be based on full chip, but that doesn't mean it will be significantly slower and will most probably cost less than $500. We have to remember that RX 480 is a midrange chip by itself and there is absolutely no sense to charge so much for it in mobile. If I remember correctly, when AMD transitioned to 28nm, the 7970M was much cheaper than 680M and somehow even cheaper than 675M, while it was based on desktop second tier card 7870. This P10 is not even second tier, but third, so even more reasons to price it competitively.
I'm nostradamusing that RX M490X will be slightly slower than 980, slightly faster than 1070M and about $100 cheaper, so not that bad of a deal. But only time will tell, so let's wait and see

Sounds like MS's new console is going to be using some form of GTX 1070/80 with GDDR5X -
"All games will be playable on Windows 10, Xbox One, and Project Scorpio so "no one gets left behind." The console will deliver 8 CPU cores and 320+ GB/s memory bandwidth."
http://www.polygon.com/e3/2016/6/13...onfirms-scorpio-the-upcoming-updated-xbox-one
Either that or AMD is planning some new GGDR5X hardware or severely cut down HBM1?hmscott likes this. -
I don't see where in that article they mention Nvidia, all previous rumors pointed at AMD, since they are miles ahead in making APU's, specially with zen around the corner, more chances of it being Zen+polaris or Zen+Vega.
And they may very well chose GDDR5x over HBM if it is a custom chip, as it may be cheaper, they'll need to cut corners to keep the console price low.
Edit: Anandtech just put up an article

Why do people even run 3DMark11 P scores any more especially on a high end GPU and get all googly eyed? It's 720p for crying out loud! WHO CARES!? I mean people are clamoring for 4K. Show me 3DMark Fire Strike at least.

Why bench with Win 7 with a possible new card? Everyone know Win 7 provide a higher total score with 3DM11. Only for blowing up the score?
This is fake...

It isn't a problem if some show numbers from 3DM11... But why use Win 7 and a <new> card who mostly all people will use with Win Crap X? @Mr. Fox have it fun?

Not that. I dont give 2 hoots about Win 7 or Win 10.

I know
But blow up score with a Os we know increase the total score isn't the correct way to show what a new card can do
Edit. And with a Crippled BGA i7... The 3DM11 score will go down faster than toilet paper When you flush your toilet with water

For RAW numbers those are interesting.
But for what about the cards limitations ?

Firestrike Ultra is the benchmark to run. 3DMark11 X if you want to see the impact a garbage processor makes. It's way past time to kill 3DMark11 P. Catzilla can bring a system to its knees even better than 3DMark11 though.
