AMD better release something damn impressive to capitalize on this!

Anyone owner with a 900m series equipped laptop should remember to review the laptop on the online stores and include this issue. I think the best course of "strategery" would be to recommend buyers stay away from the main brands [MSI, Alienware, MSI, Aorus, Gigabyte] and tell them to look for other models that are the least expensive. If the site allows you to suggest other brands, say Sager/Clevo. If they allow you to say price say "as low as $1700". If they don't, then just recommend they look for the cheapest options because the cooling is still "good-enough".
We don't need to make all the laptop makers hurt, just hurting most of them will do. It works for Metacritic and Steam reviews, high negatives hurt sales.

I'm really super skeptical about AMD doing anything right, though. R9 M295X, their current best, is an absolute joke. And, the performance gap between their best and NVIDIA second best (970M) is massive. Don't get me wrong... I would absolutely love to see them jack-slap NVIDIA real bad, but that's not likely to happen.

Nice article here.

It's too late for Nvidia to start back paddling now. The ASUS featured in the article advertised Maxwell overclocking. End of story. Nvidia can't decide to move the goal posts after.Ashtrix, TomJGX and Robbo99999 like this. -
Thankfully on the desktop side they're still fairly competitive. The R9 290(X) only look bad because of Maxwell's "efficiency", but if their 300 series lives up to the hype it will rip Maxwell 2 new holes. Though I'm pretty sure my next purchase will be a 390X regardless, if only because I like supporting underdogs, and also come to think of it, I've always used ATi cards on my old desktops (Rage64-->8500-->9800 Pro) and had nothing but good experiences. Even my first laptop I had the Xpress200M and that lasted me through 5 years of college. -

2-Because Sager is the cheapest, and I would say still decent enough. I would have bought the NP8652 instead if I knew I couldn't OC, It would have been $1685. Sure I wouldn't have some of the bells and whistles on the GT72, but I would have save almost $400 last Christmas.
You have to know your audience, and when the audience are potential buyers one of the big things potential buyers take into account is price. "Save Lots of Money" is a simple message with broad appeal. It is a message chosen because it is simple and more likely to be effective.TomJGX and Robbo99999 like this. -

Ever notice how the most ignorant tend to be the loudest and most aggressive? Almost as if they realize their ignorance, but instead of educating themselves they simply take the easy way out.

Yeah... I don't think I like PC gaming much anymore. nVidia lies and AMD doesn't have what I want. Laptops in general are trying their bloody hardest to take a step back in time to 1999. It's like everything I love just wants to blow up in my face and screw me over these days.

I'm curious to see how an overclocked m295X or (whatever the AMD flagship is called currently) does against these now "locked" Nvidia cards. Wish AMD would release something new, but they seem focused on getting ready to compete against big maxwell desktop cards and not the mobile side of things.
And this personally made me facepalm once again....

HURRAH!!
Check it out :

Selling M295X MXM module. I checked out the data sheet and it seems to check out! 2048 shaders at 800mhz. vram at 1375mhz.
I haven't the funds to buy one now please someone buy one and test it out!
For publicity I post this in two threads. Let's buy some of these and OVERCLOCK them!!octiceps likes this. -
Just get stable OC clocks with a driver that will OC, then mod and flash your bios. But stay conservative. When it does 400+ easy, dial it down to 200/250+, keep a LOT of margin for dustbunnies, high room temps or unexpected blockage of intakes.

As a quick aside, for those disheartened with NVidias recent behaviour, look what's just become available to purchase, pretty good value!:

Could be a 980M contender perhaps since overclocking is allowed by AMD!

980M maybe at a stretch but 970M definitely! We have to show AMD that we will support them. Perhaps this move to make it available is their answer to this debacle!

Eurocom told me yesterday they were comping me a second 330w PSU and an adaptor box to use them in parallel - 660W on-tap
. I never even asked. Maybe a not-so-subtle dig at the PSU debacle AND cooling potential?

Alright guys... I noticed this overclock block way back when 347.09 was released, and I supposed it was a bug. Now Nvidia says the OC feature was a bug and they 'fixed' it. Let's hope some GPU gurus around here can get around to modding drivers as they're released - I'm looking forward to Witcher 3 and there's likely to be an optimised driver release for it, which will probably also lock overclocking. I'm currently on 345.75 and have OCed my 860M Maxwell to +200 and +370 MHz on the core and memory respectively, with a +275 mV overvolt. Are these numbers normal, or is my overvolt too high for the clocks? Any higher and I start seeing artifacts and 3DMark crashes.

I think I will put this right here, just in case NVIDIA decides to delete it later on... feel free to use the link to this image as you see fit. [ http://i.imgur.com/LUVLHtu.png] It might be useful as a plaintiff exhibit some day. Feel free to tweet the image link.
