Found that funny too. Though I don't find the situation funny and actually still mad about it. I've done what I can do, all I can do is chime in and wait. -
Are these people retarded or what. That's one of the most rediculouse articles I've read in a long time. Those people probably had to read there computer manual just to figure out how to turn it on when they bought it let alone figure out how to use it.Gandem likes this.

Take that a step further, and consider that a nicely overclocked 780M more or less matches a stock 980M minus the extra vRAM. One could simply keep what they already have or buy a used machine with 780M and overclock to your heart's content and let NVIDIA keep their worthless "clock-blocked" poop while we see what, if anything, AMD has to capitalize on NVIDIA's retardedness.Ashtrix, jaybee83, TBoneSan and 1 other person like this.

I had almost bought a P150SM with a 780m instead of this, but felt that the 4790K and 970m overclocked was a better deal even though $300-500 more. But overall, my actions will speak for themselves in the end!
plus, I'm betting team red puts out a 20nm mobile by the end of the year. .. if they do, I can leave behind my hate of big green and never look back!

AMD better release something damn impressive to capitalize on this!

Anyone owner with a 900m series equipped laptop should remember to review the laptop on the online stores and include this issue. I think the best course of "strategery" would be to recommend buyers stay away from the main brands [MSI, Alienware, MSI, Aorus, Gigabyte] and tell them to look for other models that are the least expensive. If the site allows you to suggest other brands, say Sager/Clevo. If they allow you to say price say "as low as $1700". If they don't, then just recommend they look for the cheapest options because the cooling is still "good-enough".
We don't need to make all the laptop makers hurt, just hurting most of them will do. It works for Metacritic and Steam reviews, high negatives hurt sales.
If you're unhappy, make the manufacturers and end-sellers unhappy too.

I'll jump on it if they do. I cancelled a P750ZM w/980m over this, I've got $3,500AU to lob at it.
-
i couldn't spend that much - i would only do anything < $3000. i guess holding out is the better option here considering i put a deposit down to get a custom tatt done

I'm really super skeptical about AMD doing anything right, though. R9 M295X, their current best, is an absolute joke. And, the performance gap between their best and NVIDIA second best (970M) is massive. Don't get me wrong... I would absolutely love to see them jack-slap NVIDIA real bad, but that's not likely to happen.
-
Curious, why this approach? While I'm not happy with Nvidia, I think Sager/Clevo build quality is a joke, so why dog all the other brands?? Not sure why you decided to differentiate between brands while we have no idea who if any actually started this disgrace? Not trying to divide camps here but you are placing blame randomly and supporting other that haven't shown they deserve it.....
Hoping for the out of blue home run on this one, as you are right, nothing even currently competitive....Mr. Fox likes this. -

It's too late for Nvidia to start back paddling now. The ASUS featured in the article advertised Maxwell overclocking. End of story. Nvidia can't decide to move the goal posts after.Ashtrix, TomJGX and Robbo99999 like this. -
Yeah I'm also putting P750ZM on indefinite hold to see what (or if) AMD comes up with. Worse comes to worst I'll buy a 970M, mod the vbios and overclock the **** out of it till it reaches the 980M then spam a tutorial on nVidia's own forum till I get banned. (not 100% serious but you get the gist)
Their focus has been on APUs and desktop stuff mostly unfortunately. Can't really blame them as they have neither the resources nor the infrastructure to support that kind of R&D on several fronts simultaneously.
Thankfully on the desktop side they're still fairly competitive. The R9 290(X) only look bad because of Maxwell's "efficiency", but if their 300 series lives up to the hype it will rip Maxwell 2 new holes. Though I'm pretty sure my next purchase will be a 390X regardless, if only because I like supporting underdogs, and also come to think of it, I've always used ATi cards on my old desktops (Rage64-->8500-->9800 Pro) and had nothing but good experiences. Even my first laptop I had the Xpress200M and that lasted me through 5 years of college. -

1-Because it doesn't matter which brand started it, what matters is getting other brands to feel the pinch so as to make it in their interests to fight back for us. In war you have to use the terrain to your advantage. We're up against corporations here, asymmetrical warfare is our best option.
2-Because Sager is the cheapest, and I would say still decent enough. I would have bought the NP8652 instead if I knew I couldn't OC, It would have been $1685. Sure I wouldn't have some of the bells and whistles on the GT72, but I would have save almost $400 last Christmas.
You have to know your audience, and when the audience are potential buyers one of the big things potential buyers take into account is price. "Save Lots of Money" is a simple message with broad appeal. It is a message chosen because it is simple and more likely to be effective.TomJGX and Robbo99999 like this. -
I've got a similar plan, unfortunately that still puts money in Nvidias pockets which I'd like to avoid if I can.

Well what can you do. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

@n=1, I was earlier planning to pull the trigger on P750 tomorrow. How long do you think we will need to wait for the R9 m390?

June probably.

Looks like I'm forced to go green for the last time.

Not really, even in the iMac with it's cr@ppy cooling system the M295X beats the 970 in 2 out of 3 games tested by NotebookCheck at highest settings. And we still don't have any properly cooled M295X scores.

Good choice, I wouldn't be buying an NVidia laptop at the moment, not with the block on overclocking. -
Ever notice how the most ignorant tend to be the loudest and most aggressive? Almost as if they realize their ignorance, but instead of educating themselves they simply take the easy way out.

Yeah... I don't think I like PC gaming much anymore. nVidia lies and AMD doesn't have what I want. Laptops in general are trying their bloody hardest to take a step back in time to 1999. It's like everything I love just wants to blow up in my face and screw me over these days.

I'm curious to see how an overclocked m295X or (whatever the AMD flagship is called currently) does against these now "locked" Nvidia cards. Wish AMD would release something new, but they seem focused on getting ready to compete against big maxwell desktop cards and not the mobile side of things.
And this personally made me facepalm once again....

Check it out :

Selling M295X MXM module. I checked out the data sheet and it seems to check out! 2048 shaders at 800mhz. vram at 1375mhz.
I haven't the funds to buy one now please someone buy one and test it out!
For publicity I post this in two threads. Let's buy some of these and OVERCLOCK them!!octiceps likes this. -
Just get stable OC clocks with a driver that will OC, then mod and flash your bios. But stay conservative. When it does 400+ easy, dial it down to 200/250+, keep a LOT of margin for dustbunnies, high room temps or unexpected blockage of intakes.
-
Never mind

One advantage of waiting for June (if you can wait on upgrading to a new laptop) is the Broadwell unlocked processors will be out then! So you can get a 14nm chip with team red...
-
I would like to see tests at 4K. I know on the desktop, the cards looked a little week at 1080, but when doing 4k, nvidia has a tough time catching up. I have not seen a single laptop test their mobile card at 4K... just a thought for those getting batman with 3k and 4k screens!

Could be a 980M contender perhaps since overclocking is allowed by AMD!

980M maybe at a stretch but 970M definitely! We have to show AMD that we will support them. Perhaps this move to make it available is their answer to this debacle!

Eurocom told me yesterday they were comping me a second 330w PSU and an adaptor box to use them in parallel - 660W on-tap
. I never even asked. Maybe a not-so-subtle dig at the PSU debacle AND cooling potential?

Alright guys... I noticed this overclock block way back when 347.09 was released, and I supposed it was a bug. Now Nvidia says the OC feature was a bug and they 'fixed' it. Let's hope some GPU gurus around here can get around to modding drivers as they're released - I'm looking forward to Witcher 3 and there's likely to be an optimised driver release for it, which will probably also lock overclocking. I'm currently on 345.75 and have OCed my 860M Maxwell to +200 and +370 MHz on the core and memory respectively, with a +275 mV overvolt. Are these numbers normal, or is my overvolt too high for the clocks? Any higher and I start seeing artifacts and 3DMark crashes.

Yeah I hope someone can mod the drivers.. I've asked svl7 prema etc to have a look but don't know if anyone has.. It has to be literally a line of code..

I think I will put this right here, just in case NVIDIA decides to delete it later on... feel free to use the link to this image as you see fit. [ http://i.imgur.com/LUVLHtu.png] It might be useful as a plaintiff exhibit some day. Feel free to tweet the image link.
