It could be that NVIDIA is waiting until the iMac is released. It still says "Coming soon" on Apple.com.

That just shows why SLI 680Ms are a laughably bad investment. Just 2 years for like $1600 in GPUs.

    Yeah no thanks.

$1,600? Last I checked they were $500 each (give or take $50 from various venders). And that's pretty much the same for all technology (in general), even desktop GPU's. Every two or three years you could use an upgrade. Even though desktop computers are often easier to take apart and put together because of their size, I wouldn't say the 680M's are anymore a bad investment than any other GPU.

They're only a bad investment if you're a parent buying your kid the M18x R2 because you love to spoil them...god forbid they actually know how to care for a computer.

500$??where did you find this prices??
at ebay or from a reseler i can find them 750$-800$ each.
the 7970m is on this price 450$-500$

The 680MX will be over 120w, whereas the 680M is 100w.

Don't expect to see it in the Alienwares due to heat, power draw, and the power supply. I'm no expert though.

Turn down AA or other super taxing options and they'll run every game for like the next 5+ years, albeit with some settings lowered.

I don`t think this 1536 core thingy is coming to notebooks until we have the improved Kepler here aka 700M series.

Power draw is perfectly fine, but heat wise it may put too much restraint on the cooling systems that the OEMs can`t include them. 17" might not be a problem, but who knows, they might need to increase RPM = more noise to acommodate the 680MX.

    I don`t know. I have a feeling we don`t see the 1536 core GPU until 780M.

It's +$900 upcharge for an SLI 680M in the P370EM in the Sagers from a base of 7970m. So yeah, I'd say it's about $700 per card.

That's what I've been saying all along. Power alone will be significantly more, which won't be a straight swap in existing machines, at least not 15" notebooks because of (a) cooling and (b) power supply. 17" may just need a new heatsink, and possibly fan, but not sure if they could make it just a straight swap. Likely be a $1000+ upgrade which IMHO, just sell your current laptop and buy a new one with a 680MX (or 780m as you state). This is all assuming the power requirements don't exceed what the MXM can provide.

I'm pretty sure the 680MX would exceed what the MXM can provide. Don't think Dell will modify their chassis to support better cooling, or make changes to the power supply or any internal structures. And above that, the battery life would be like 10 minutes xD I mean... I hope they could accomodate the 680MX, but IMO the next GPU we'll see in Alienwares high end line will be 700 series. who knows?

+ It would have to be available for the M18x of course... so in SLI the cards would pull 250w alone, not to mention XM CPUs and all the other components.

And aren't the m18x power supplys already like 240w - 330w? SLI 680MX + XM CPU would already be pushing 300w by themselves :S battery life = 0 , heat = the sun

Ah, I was referring to the upgrade price on a configuration page from Alienware or other resellers. Not OEM aftermarket prices, my bad. But I don't see it as a bad investment.

    ---

About the power consumption, I say it is possible to pull off if some things are modified. I'm sure the 700 series mobile GPU will consume even more power than the 680MX, and perhaps this is a "stepping stone" to some new form of power brick and/or efficiency revision. We all know new technology and methods are being created every day, so, I see this is as a plausible scenario. I just hope they don't make the power brick as huge as the Xbox 360's, ha ha.

No 700M series will consume less power if you compare them clock for clock against 600M (Kepler).

Thats the reason why I think 1536 core will have to wait until 2013 :)

Everyone knows that buying new from an ebay retailer is a laughably bad idea when it comes to upgrading a laptop. You build it as you want it from the start, usually WITHOUT the prospect of upgrading later if you can help it.

Any retailer shows the 680M at around $500, which is a steal as far as prices go. :p

However, once you factor in selling the old GPU, the self-upgrade vs initial upgrade prices end up in the same ballpark.

Assuming Alienware provides us with the 680MX for the M18x, it would require an increase in wattage for the power supply, correct? Hmm, so it would be more than 330W, how much do you think would be necessary? I think 60 more watts should cover it. Perhaps a 390W power adapter could work? I still see it as possible, and I'm hoping to see it actualized. One of the reasons I cancelled my 680M order was because this GPU came out, which leaves me sitting around waiting for something to happen. And the worst part is, nobody at Alienware knows when it will be available, yet they speak of it as it will be. All of this back and forth discussion is driving me crazy...I just want my system.

I don't think its coming out. I think since the windows 8 launch, a lot of all in ones are coming out for pc.... just like apples imac. I think this card will be for the high end all in ones as they already currently use mobile gpus.

One thing for shure: If MSI wanted to include the 680MX, they already would have announced it ages ago and leaked benchmarks would have been here looong time ago from our trusty friends in China :p

Lots of people have been overclocking the 680M over the 680MX stock scores (I think) with a 180W supply. But I guess the overclockers have been pretty close to the 180W limit, same can be applied to Alienware too I guess with OC. And its never good to utilize PSU`s close to the rated limit due to thermals and life span, so who knows, they might need a bigger PSU with 680MX yes. 60W more seems more than enough imo.

I understand your frustration bro. The guy from Dell which I spoke to said that 680MX will be in their systems in early december. Other people asked their reps, but they got a reply that they didn`t know. They didn`t say it would NOT come though.

Perhaps MSI/Clevo/Alienware are under NDA from Apple because Apple got some timed exclusive on this GPU? I have no idea. All I know that you will need a very functional cooling system for this GPU since it will get hot. But then again, both Alienware and Clevo have a very good cooling system in their notebooks.

We will just have to wait I guess. I think most OEMs would be much better off waiting for 780M before going allin on Kepler.

180W bricks can cope with most GPU overclocking, though if you try and overclock the CPU then they choke.

Unless Apple had exclusive priority on its release, as you said. I suggested this earlier in the Alienware M18x board...I'm pretty sure that's an accurate assumption. As the iMac it will be released with doesn't come out until December, I'm assuming we won't see the 680MX offered by anyone until that day. I suppose I'll wait, but it is very frustrating...I wanted to treat myself to a gaming notebook for my birthday. :(

Honestly I've never had a problem with it. Then again, I don't have a kilowatt meter to measure it, but the computer's never shut off nor my voltage dropped while overclocked and stressing the GPU.

Maybe you could with a custom vBIOS at the highest voltage while you run 8 threads of Prime95 and Kombuster to 99% utilization both the CPU and GPU for an extended period of time...

"According to a French site...", not very reliable, but I suppose plausible. Even so, that doesn't exactly mean anything. I've also had a few friends I know in Europe ask their Dell representatives and they claim to be getting rid of their last 680M cards in Sweden and the UK. Basically, NVIDIA has stopped supplying the 680M card. (But as we know, Representatives aren't always the most reliable when it comes to information...) Unless something else is going to replace the 680M besides the 680MX, I still have hope it will be available in, or by December.

I don't think it was ever an exclusivity thing only that the Apple was the only device designed to handle it as your typical MXM system was designed for a 100W TDP.

Alienware stopped shipping with the 680m for a while before due to availability. Perhaps the same issue here.

I never had an issue either, but my point was that an overclock to 1000/2400 if you looked at the link would run several games/benchmarks near the 180W peak. Meaker was PSU limited in his benchmark tests with his massive overclocks too. The point is that a 180W system likely will not be sufficient, so it will require a larger PSU, like 250W+. For any laptops with your standard sleeve/prong connector (like Sager 15") won't be a simple swap because I believe max power with that is 180W. The four prong connector type PSU will be needed. Secondly, depends on if the system can handle a 22% TDP increase. Sure from the ground up I'm sure a system could be designed with that in mind. But to think it will be a straight swap is more than wishful thinking imho.

I'm skeptical to believe so. You would think that if there was a shortage once before, they would have accounted for possible future shortages as well. Even Xotic PC told me Alienware delayed their shipment of new arrivals until mid-December. When I put all of this together, it seems the 680MX looks more and more possible, but still no one will definitively tell me about it! I'm keeping my hopes up for it... I even spoke to an Administrator on the GeForce forums and he told me he "cannot talk about unannounced products." I don't exactly see how it's unannounced, but I suppose it is if you consider everyone besides Apple hasn't claimed its existence, ha ha.

    "It's all rubbish!"

You can't account for shortages when your supplier runs out of parts, especially with a high demand/limited volume sort of thing. Fixed output = wait in line. Although it hasn't seemed to affect Clevo or MSI one bit the whole time.

Now I wouldn't be surprised if Alienware offered it, with a system cooling redesign. That's entirely possible. But again, existing users shouldn't expect to do a straight swap because it likely won't happen.

Initial post confirming it was being manufactured, on October 31st.

    ---

Reconfirmed with two separate agents. I asked them both to check their computers for inventory.

Similar statements from both. They see it, but have no information when it will be available, or can't disclose that information. I would say it's safe to assume it will be available in by the end of this month, or in December.

Probably betwen 5 and 10% on average. I tested my stock 680m with a nice 800/2200 OC and got around 10% more performance on average. That should be around the same performance of a 680mx.

I tested my stock 680M vs an OC to match the texture fillrate and memory bandwidth and I got about 13% improvement in 3DMark11. This was a while ago with some older drivers, and 3DMark11 rather than any games, so at this point I would believe anyone saying 5-15% improvement. I am curious to see how it OCs though =D

Alienware technical support agreed with at least 15% when I mentioned it. I'd say if you really pushed it, you could get 20% - 25%. You can still overclock the 680MX which has higher clocks to begin with. I'm sure we'll all know soon enough...I myself cannot wait! I've been checking everyday. I'm probably more excited than most of you with Alienware's because I don't have a system, period. So, this is pretty awesome for me...my first gaming rig.

680mx only has higher ram clocks, you will hit maybe 1500mhz instead of 1300mhz.

Core spped will be limited to +153mhz and could include the same throttling the 680m final bioses had, if thats the case an unlocked 680m would be faster with a large core clock advantage.

Didn't know that. Thanks for sharing. Too bad the 680M isn't unlocked...

It is, but only with the engineering sample bios that lets it clock to 1070/2600 levels.

If the 680MX is stuck at 870ish mhz core clocks then the 680M clocked at 1040-1070mhz is going to flatten it.

    Hi there,

I'm looking to buy a gaming rig as soon as possible.

Just wanted to know if it is worth the wait for the 680MX single or SLI or going for the 680M SLI?

Will dell release the 680MX on the M18x R2 this month or early next year?

    Any advise appreciated

    Thanks

So the unlocked vbioses for the 4GB 680M is just an ES bios?

Nobody knows. Not even Dell. So wait and see or buy today. I don't think the performance difference is worthwhile if it does release.

So, you're saying the 680M is more powerful than the 680MX? Why would NVIDIA even make the 680MX GPU if this was true?

And if you can unlock the 680M, can you not do the exact same thing with the 680MX?

You may not be able to unlock the 680MX due to power restraints (or if you can, you'll end up burning up the socket)
