Well...good point, loll. Why don't we just say that the both of us have excellent machines?

I have a bit of experience with RC planes and have used only 1 flight sim in my life. I still love planes though, and in the end, isn't that all that matters?

So, what is your take on IL2 (1946) and do you have any good joysticks to recommend? *points to his earlier post about the Logitech one*

    Hey guys!

Do you know how to get the FSX to not pause when u use other programs?

F.eks: If i'm running FSX and I open iTunes the game will pause. (I don't want that)

Hmm, just got a new notebook, so FSX is not installed, so I can't check. But I don't think it's possible...

Try searching for a CFG tweak, it might do it!

I haven't been flight simming for a while now, FSX is just so much of a pain in the arse to get to work correctly.

Me, neither! I now have an ultraportable so FSX is just not possible on this machine...

And I think FSX was badly coded, so I'm waiting for FS11 which, hopefully, will be more optimized... I also had blurry texture issues on FSX.

I've spent more flight hours on FS9. FS9 can almost look as good as FSX with addons....

I bought a new copy of FSX Gold (Deluxe + Acceleration) the other day hoping to get back into it. I also installed REX 2.0. Looks fine yet some of the issues that left me frustrated when I quit playing a few months ago are still there.

Shoddy performance, unexplainable crashes...yeah, anyways I'm hoping to get it working right this time around. Either that, or I gave Microsoft an extra $40 for no reason. :(

OK, sorry for the delays! I promised several people I'd check and see how FSX ran on the m11x... and, it actually runs well! Was very pleased with performance.

This was running at 1366x768, FSX Acceleration pack, AA on, AF on, Aircraft Ultra High, Scenary Medium High, Traffic medium, framerate set to unlimited.

Took off from La Guardia in the Maule, and flew over downtown and over to the Statue of Liberty. Framerate was just fine, ranging from low 30's on up to 60+, averaging over downtown mid 30's to 40's, and everywhere else was upper 40's, low 50's.

Definitely totally playable and enjoyable. I'm sure with more demanding weather, settings, etc it might need a bit of tweaking, but no issues at all that I could find.

Sorry the report wasn't more detailed, but running late for work ha, but wanted to get this up for those that wanted it.

Let me know if there are other scenarios you'd like to see tested.

EDIT: This was all on battery, didn't have the charger handy... and also with the bios OC option turned on... I've had it on since day one with absolute no issues, only better performance.

    Thats pretty impressive Id say.

Quick Q for the FSX experts here - there seemed to be a huge variation in views on the limited vs unlimited framerate issue a few years ago. Has this resolved as processing power has increased?

I still limit to 30 fps because that was what I was advised ages ago

    Thanks

I actually usually have mine limited to somewhere around 34/35 range. But, for the m11x test, I set it to unlimited to simply see where it would actually run.

On my G51, having set to unlimited actually causes some random stutters, as the framerate will jump all over the place from 30's all the way to 100+. Where as with it limited, it settles in nicely right there, doesn't get higher, but also doesn't drop down or change.

So, I'd recommend limiting it to something your machine will run steadily, and leave it there.

Cool! I am a CFI, CFII, MEI. Most of my time is in Piper Archer, Arrow, Seminoles. I also have time in Cessna 152s and 172s. I am a fan of Piper aircraft though, maybe because most of my flight training was done in this aircraft.

Still trying to find a good flight sim version of it. I swear I had one for FS9 several years back, but can't find it anymore.

Really good info, much appreciated. I can't believe the M11X can actually run FSX. What was the frame rates like on the ground at the airport in New York? I find the frame rates really crash on my 4850 desktop card when on the ground at any New York airport.

Although fsx will run on the m11x with the original airplanes, the frame rate and scenery details will have to be turned down a lot if you plan to use a PDMG plane.

I tried to run the PDMG plane in Los Angles and was getting frame rates of 9 to 11 in the cockpit and 17 to 20 on the outside views with low settings and low resolutions

With the original planes that come with fsx i was able to increase the details and the resoution and still get 23 to 26 fps outside and 22 to 24 fps in the cockpit.

yeah, I'm sure that third-party aircraft with crazy details and textures/models and upgraded scenery/weather packs will crush the performance, but for the regular game plus acceleration pack, it's played really well. Air racing the P51's, regular flights/ missions have all ran fine.

For me its more scenery than planes, if I was starting from scratch id go with:

    REX for weather
UTX for whatever region you fly in most
FS Global if you fly anywhere with hills mountains

For the UK if you like small airports then id thoroughly recommend the UK 2000 VFR airfields packages.

As far as planes, the only ones that I have bought that I still fly regularly are:

Duke B60 from Real Air Simulations
    Citation Mustang from Flight 1

    I hope this helps

    Hello,
I have tested FSX on Alienware both M17x-R1 (QX9300 and 4870XF) as well as M17x-R2 (i7-920xm and 4870XF). Basically the game runs great on maximum settings (20-30fsp) with one exception. When you fly throgh clouds overcast and FSX anti-aliasing is turned on, the fps drops significantly from 30fps to 6fps. I've read that it is a known issue with the ATI cards and the FSX clouds. I've tried all kinds of drivers and also using the ATI anti-aliasing instead of the FSX one but no improvement. Also, I've tired disabling the crossfire but results were the same. Only when the AA is turned off the fps don't drop. It is definitely a GPU and not a CPU issue since i've tested it with both - the best mobile c2q and the best mobile i7 and still no difference.
So I wanted to see if anyone who owns a laptop with the new ATI Mobility 5870 GPU have had a chance to test the sim and see if the clouds issue is still present in the 5xxx series?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

It seems as though the PDMG 747 is more complicated than the one that comes with FSX

There are no optimizations applied to FSX when you install the PDMG planes just added compications for the cpu to keep up with. I still get upset :( when I have to pay extra for the plane that should have come with FSX in the first place.

if the plane comes with a FMC then that FMC should at least be functional.

It's not that you have to buy the additional programs to make the program look better but more to the fact that FSX is so expandable.

Does FS X actually run acceptably with the FS X eye candy on any notebook? I remember it being pretty jerky with a GTX 280 (desktop) on a dual-Harpertown, which was the last time I had anything to do with it.

It's mostly CPU-bound. I imagine a desktop i7 at 3+GHz would run great. My 5870M can handle FSX at max settings, it's the CPU that can't keep up.

This is one of those rare sims that asks for a lot of horsepower from your cpu and your gpu. currently running it on a M11x with the standard planes 747 over lax will run at about 23 fps with no dynamic secnery no traffic no boats and no groud shadows. filtering antistropic and aa high.

I currently don't use FSX but I'm researching a new computer so I can. One thing I can tell you though from my research is that using high traffic settings, especially car traffic, is a frame killer for FSX. Try pulling back the traffic slider(s) and you may see a significant increase in FPS (but don't expect miracles - many will say the only way to absolutely max everything out - and I mean everything - and still get smooth high fps is to get a desktop quad i7 and overclock it to 4Ghz +!). I don't think you need to max out every single option though to enjoy it. I can't even max out FS2004 on my current computer and I still love it.

Nice find. Now the question is, why is it simply called "Microsoft Flight"? What happened to the "Simulator" part?

I guess they think that it will make the game look more "noob-friendly" since "Simulator" imply difficulty and complexity.

I thought Microsoft Flight Simulator still sold remarkably well despite the "simulator" moniker.

On that same note though, did you see them mention "Age of Empires ONLINE"?

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much until we know more about it.
If "Age of Empires Online" is the new vibe that Microsoft is going for with its new "Return to PC Gaming Initiative", then forget about it, we are probably not the intended target audience for this game.

I am very, very skeptical of this. If it's a watered down "you have to be online to play" hybrid social networking kind of thing I am absolutely not interested at all. I don't want to jump the gun, wait and see BUT if they're taking the direction I think they're hinting at they might pick up a new group of players but alienate the longtime fans of the series.

After four years of FSX, I sitll don't have a machine capable of run it all on max.

I hope MS Flight should keep the realism but with more budget friendly code.

Still, I'm HUGE fan of all this and I'm very happy that the saga continues.

Even though I'll keep burning my money with it, despite my wife conplains.

Haha that sounds familiar, my boyfriend just doesnt get it. Spent an hour trying to hover a helicopter last nights and he was asking "but whats the point of that game?"!

Plus the fact that my laptop used to run it fine, now doesnt for some reason!
