what is "worth it"? $5 for me is worth it if I didn't already have it. A LOT of people still play it.. I mean why not? Terrific FPS gameplay. Fun.

Just bought 2 copies of CS:S myself. I won't feel bad if I don't like it. I've spent what, more than 200 hours on TF2 alone, and I got the orange box for $10!

Are there any resources for understanding CS:S though? Hopefully it will be like my TF2 experience, where I was very frustrated and disliked the game, but now understand and I'm an avid TF2er, when I'm not playing L4D2 :p

CS:S can be highly addicting as well... but I guarantee you will be frustrated with it at first as well, maybe even worse. There is a lot more waiting if you die. There are deathmatch type games though called Gungame which you can use to help you learn some of the weapons. But for the most part, just try to find a good pub and watch how others play.

Jumped in a game. We were terrorists with hostages and police/good guys tried to get in. But you could buy stuff before the match. Where's the money come from? Is it per round? I need to do reading somewhere to get the basics down. How do I Identify the deathmatch stuff, where it's just kill anyone you see?

This is like TF2, where I would jump in a game and ask if it was "Kart pushing mode" but now of course I know that would be a pl_(map).

    Badwater FTW!

$5?!? For that much, even if I don't like the game it's worth it! I haven't played CounterStrike since about...1998?

Has it changed much or is it still the same style of gameplay? Do I need anything else to play CS:S (i.e. it's not an expansion or anything, right?)

Gonna purchase as soon as I get home from work. Cheers!

Yep, it's a standalone, but considering CS 1.6 was free and the better game... I dunno, at least it's the cheapest way to get Source atm (not that modding is as big as it was in HL).

No, Counter-strike was a normal mod for HL1 until 1.5.. Then valve bought it and made 1.6, now source.

its gonna be a helluva ride :p still same style but also very different, obviously.

No, 1.6 was free - on transitioning to Steam, CS 1.6, DoD, HL :DM, essentially all Valve-owned HL mods were given absolutely free of charge to HL owners.

You get money per round. You also get $300 for every kill. If you complete the mission by fulfilling the mission requirements, i.e. detonating the bomb if you're a terrorist, or successfully escorting the VIP, you also get more cash than you would if your team had wiped out the entire enemy team.

Speaking to hostages also gives you $150 that round, and a small bonus (50/100?) for the next round.

But it's not an overall money right? It's just per game you're actually in?

It's a casual/mainstream game that panders to the lowest commen denominator - in other words, no shortage of people. Personally I think the $2 price tag was closer to its worth, but it depends on the style of play you enjoy.

It is also $9.99 at my local Best Buy and Fry's Electronics. I'd pick up the disc version so I don't have to download the whole game (my fast internet is gone and I am currently left with slow internet), I like a physical box on the shelf and it still registers on Steam and I can download it from Steam as if I bought it from Steam.

But I think I'll just buy The Orange Box, still haven't played any of the games in it yet.

Also, it looks like Rebellion have gone back to the original Aliens Vs. Predator, updated it to work on modern systems/OSs, added 360 controller support and widescreen, thrown in the expansions and music soundtrack, and released it on Steam as Aliens Vs. Predator Classic 2000 for £2.99. No multiplayer at the moment, but they're supposed to be patching it in.

Bioshock 2 up for pre-order. 4 pack is going for $135, split between four people makes it ~$33.75 a piece, PLUS bonus Bioshock 1 for free, and I believe that's 4x as well..

confirmed.. got a group together on another forum, did the 4-way split for Bioshock 2 and Bioshock 1. w00t.

note Bioshock 2 looks like it will have securom according to the lower part of the steam store page where it says it also uses GFWL. That's fine with me though, I gave up on that after getting Crysis =)

are these games RTS w/ base building? What's the gameplay like - controlling units and base building? I've never played but have heard a lot of praises on the games and they've been on sale a few times. I enjoy WWII stuff and saw CoH goes through some familiar events..

    CoH is $5
    CoH + 1st xpac is $7.50
    complete is $~13

so I could save a few dollars and just get CoH or the Gold pack. Are there features in Valor that I would be really missing out on similar to Civ IV where if you get the final xpac it is basically all the previous games anyway? I know $5-7 isn't a whole lot, but for just an on-the-whim purchase I don't want to go overboard haha. BTW I did not like Dawn of War II 40,000k too much if that makes a difference.

    This weekend:
    Tropico 3 @ $13.60 (seems wicked cheap)
Freedom Force Pack and X-Com Complete Pack are both avail for only $2 a piece.

Kinda too late to discuss but as a side note, I bought Psychonauts for $2 during this weeks midweek deal. So far the game kinda blows but for that cheap who cares.
