I've played through the singleplayer campaign and while being too short it's one hell of a game! Probably the best game I've played in a long while. I posted up a video of my favorite level, Death From Above, on YouTube:

What's the health system like in CoD4? In CoD2 it had the recharging health type, but some of the screenshots in CoD4 appear to show a typical health bar.

    Thanks.

one thing i LOVE about cod4 is that there is no camping :) if u completely run up on the enemy base where they are spawning, their spawn spot will move to another location on the other side of the map. awesome :d

By the way great review Forerunner. I just installed the game tonight and am playing it on my C90 as well and it runs just as well as you said it does. Definitely a game of the year candidate. Also, someone was asking for the console command to show the fps in game. To do this open the console with the ~ key after enabling the ability to do so in the options menu and type in /cg_drawfps 1.

Thanks blowtorch. Addicted to the multiplayer which is a great thing since after this and gears of war, I don't think any must have games are gonna be released for me. Crysis is a possibilty but I"m not betting on it. So these games have to last me the next couple of months since Assassin's creed is not this year. :(

I got this game the other day and it's awesome. I have played CoD 1 and 2 and this one continues the enjoyable gameplay and awesome graphics. It seems to be optimized for PC unlike CoD 2.

    Great review, thanks for posting.

I had bought a COD several years ago and I returned it (back in the day when they still allowed you to). I didn't like it for one main reason - game play was extremely "linear". You couldn't circle a city and attack from a different side, there was one entrance, and one path to your objective. Furthermore, you could always count on the enemy being in the exact same spot If you got killed half way thru a level, and had to start over, you knew exactly where the enemy would pop up.

Things may have changed since that version, but my experience has forever put me off buying any COD titles.

Which COD did you buy? It somewhat depends on which you bought.

Man I gave up on the deeper pentration perk. I thought it was good but overall its lackluster compared to the other perks. Its not as useful as it good be.

Yea the penetration perk wasn't too useful. At the moment I like to use double tap (increase fire rate so it's extremely good at close range) + steady aim (improved accuracy even when I'm not aiming at the sight) for my assault rifles (AK47, M4 or G36C) with the grenade launcher (aka the n00b tube :D ) for some simple fast kills. ;)

I've played CoD4 for 3 days now, and I think its absolutely amazing! Great graphics, great story, great gameplay! Even though I would have to agree steveeb that its somewaht linear, I wouldn't say that that is necessarily a bad thing. You wouldn't be able to attack from where ever you wan't in real life, you would have to take orders form your sgt. or commander. And it's not 100% linear, you CAN hit a spot from different directions most of the time, which I think is a great mix of the two. There has been laid SO much attention to detail in this game, that I actually caught myself saying "wow" out loud!

Well I have it at 1600x1000 all high (no aa). get around 40fps. You should be getting around 30 fps at 1280x800, but then again I don't have a clue of what you have besides the 8600mGT since you havn't stated it anywhere.
    no attitude intended btw

Have you done any benchmark testing? 3dmark06? That could tell you if something is wrong. Do you have trouble with any other graphic-intense games?

IMO you should be getting a little bit more from a 8600mGT 512mb, but thats beside the subject. The game is pretty optimized, so if I where you i'd reinstall the driver (or try a completely different driver). 1. D/L the driver again (or a new) 2. Unrar them to a folder preferably on your desktop 3. Uninstall your current driver 4. Restart your system into safe mode 5. install new driver with modded inf.

it seems 169.01 runs a littel bit better in cod4, 3dmark is the same but.. it also depends on the map... but overall still not great.

It does seem like it would have to be something wrong with your hardware. MAYBE a reinstall of the game would help. The full game is apparently also more optimized than the demo.

I suspect the mix of nvidia drivers, 8600m and vista.. just saw a thread with other people having alot of problems with 8600 and cod4, they crash and stuff though, but still... only in cod4.

I bet most are using vista, because of the crysis demo and such. I will proberly reinstall and go back to Xp and try the 169.04 there again (has worked flawless)

    EDIT
    if has interest:

I run windows xp with a 8600m gt and I get about 35-40 fps with 1280x800 resolution and 2xaa or if i run full res and no aa about the same fps also. I use the 163.71 drivers so maybe youd wanna give those a try. The game runs smoothly in both outdoor and indoor environments and is the graphics engine seems pretty streamlined and optimized so you might want to just re-install your drivers and make sure to close any unnecessary tasks that might be in the background. Also, a quick question I just found that my ping at my college is absolutely ridiculous and is really hampering my ability to play multiplayer  (its kinda hard when you shoot 2 secs after you pull the trigger). Anyone else have an issue like this at their college and mayb something to help. I'm pretty sure its just their network and all its traffic but im crossing my fingers there might be a quick fix

Also you can turn off specular maps for a nice boost in fps. It basically has to do with an advanced light reflections and can be turned off and you probably won't notice a big change.

    @Blowtorch

what cpu, ram and so on do you have?

Because i reinstalled winXP yesterday and Cod4 ran ALOT better than on vista.. but still not as good as expected from a dx9 game on a 512mb 8600m id say, might just be me, but if i put all settings on and play 1280x800, it runs, but far from smooth.. i got drops down til 20 from 40 which makes everything go sloooow...

got a bit of the same problem in 1024 though, seems a bit wierd, like it just wont run smooth. :/

Its one of the assault rifles. It has a balance of all the stats. I usually like weapons that are average all around instead of very high in one setting vs very low in another.

Great review there ForeRunner! You inspired me such that i have ordered my copy from Amazon now for 40$!! :D

Btw, for while trying out the demo yesterday i saw that 1200X800 with everthing on resulted in framedrops to less < 25 during heavy action.

Is the multiplayer more demanding in terms of graphics? If so i may have to reduce me settings a bit i guess. Wats the settings that u play on?

Edit: sorry i didnt mention that i had the Asus G1s

Are you using new drivers? I recommend turning off specular maps for a good boost in fps. I play on my c90 with ddr2 at 1680 x 1050 with a 555/490 overclock and my cpu overclocked.

    Running on 169.04. Default clocks.

How much of a eyecandy downer does turning of specular maps result in? I will check today evening and see how the fps goes on the demo with it off.

One thing i noticed though. Having it on 1024X768 with everything on and 2xAA, the demo fps wasnt dropping below 30. :D

Hope the retail version missions arent more graphical demanding then that! :p
