I'm undecided. Great laptop just a bum unit. I will wait for more reviews.

Question, which providers better performance? 1070 on the laptop or 980m SLI?

1070 for me all day long

Actually, we just compared this, single data point, but still interesting - the 980m SLI won against the 1070 single GPU:

Even though the 980m Sli may perform better, the 1070 is much better in terms of price to performance ratio, unless there's a 980m sli for $2000 or under?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Considering that MSI and Clevo killed GPU upgrades for the 980m/970m there will likely be a lot of MSI GT80/GT80S, MSI GT72/GT72S, Clevo P870DM, Clevo P7XXDM's, all with 980/980m/970m single and *SLI* laptops going for cheap very soon.
Grab one cheap if you can, low ball'em, they aren't going to get upgrades.
GPU upgrades moving forward are dead, don't be fooled into thinking otherwise.

There's been plenty on here. If you go on notebook check games. You can filter just the 1070 and 980m sli. I haven't checked but one card equal to a sli card is always better.
Plus besides the bench marks between the two is in favour of the 980m sli because they've had nearly 2 years to mature it. In months to come the benchmark will exceed 16000+ and score much closer to its desktop score. Then you will probably start wishing you got the 1070.
Plus synthetic benchmarks doesn't always show the trueness of a card.
I think newer cards still give better fps than the older card that matched its synthetic score (on trend I've watch on here and notebook check since 2008 and had got more consistent as time has got on to the current day).
Also. The main benefit is the 1070 is 100 full power.
The 980m sli will prob give as low as 20% advantage over 980m up to about 80% more power....that's if the game supports sli. And worst case scenario is there's no support and your running just a 980m whilst the 1070 is just flying through that game.
That's why I pick a single card all day long.
I think the only advantage with sli is that it sounds badass powerful for bragging rights. But a 1070 is also on par with a 980 Ti.

Most of my games scale excellently with SLI, and most run well over 100 fps on 980m SLI, so not just a winner in benchmarking, but also a winner in game play.
SLI gets crap it doesn't deserve.
I read those posts and have to laugh out loud, as I am gaming at 100 fps in games while reading BS about imagined (they don't have SLI so how would they know??) micro-stuttering and new games not coming out supporting SLI - while my new games get SLI support by using old profiles until a few weeks later when Nvidia releases a new profile, and some time later a further optimized profile.
If you SLI the top GPU, you have the best of both worlds, fastest single GPU performance and fastest performance overall for games that scale in SLI, and most do.
Watch this and see how these games scale in SLI Pascal, there are hundreds more.

Seems there will be an announcement soon regarding that. We are getting somewhere with the whole GPU upgrades finally.
As for 1070 vs 980m SLI, the SLI will be stronger and will perform a bit better in games with good scaling, but otherwise 1070 is not THAT far behind. If you don't want hassle with SLI, 1070 is great value.steberg, TomJGX, Kade Storm and 1 other person like this. -
Yeah, sorry man, it's pretty tough to hear the first time. Take your time mourning it's loss.
MSI is telling people to buy new Pascal laptops, and saying not to bother with asking for GPU upgrades. Same canned BS to every MSI Support ticket placed.
We are still on MSI to follow through on their promise for 2 generations of GPU upgrades from Maxwell for the GT80/GT80S and GT72/GT72S.
And the other fantasy league member for MXM upgrades was Clevo.
Clevo designed their Pascal MXM cards off just enough physically and electronically to not be compatible in their previous models. They won't fit in the P870DM, and Clevo has 2 new slightly physically different P870DM2/DM2 models.
It's enough to have already turned people against buying from both Clevo and MSI in the future.
Neither company offerred any kind of consideration for their customers expecting to be able to upgrade their MXM cards, and in fact purposefully made sure it wasn't possible.GTO_PAO11 likes this. -
I'm not sure about the pascal sli. But from the comment I read about the sli cards. That was my knowledge of them. However looking just on benchmarks I never seen the sli cards appear to give at least 80% extra performance all the time over the single card.
But I would still probably prefer the newer single card over previous generation card if they appear equal.

But, to be clear, I am still not supporting MSI until they reaffirm their commitment to provide 2 generations of GPU upgrades for the GT80/GT80S and GT72/GT72S.
We haven't heard the actual content of the announcement yet, and can't assume it's going to be positive given the firmly implied NO given by MSI support so far.Last edited: Aug 25, 2016Atma likes this. -

Well, to be honest Its been 9 days since the release of the Pascal cards. Its to be expected that MSI (and all brands) put their efforts into new models. Obviously the upgrade program would always be some months off. Lets see what they come up, its too soon to be so mad. Anyone that can upgrade has at least a 970m laptop, and can play anything that exists today in high, so realisticly everyone can wait a bit longer...hmscott likes this. -
MSI openly and clearly stated for years that these laptops were getting 2 generations of GPU upgrades, why at the moment it matters most, would MSI support say to everyone that asks about GT80/GT72 upgrades:
"...a direct upgrade to the next generation (N17) graphics is NOT recommended, and would require a different motherboard design/power/thermal configurations to support."
Here's one response from MSI Support posted:
""Hello DanieleGiangregorio,
Welcome to MSI Online Notebook Customer Service Center, and we are very glad to serve you.
We are going to release Nvidia N17 generation products, but for our current Notebook products with GTX 8XX, GTX 9XX graphic cards, a direct MXM card upgrade to the next generation (N17) graphics is not recommended.
The next generation (N17) graphics has huge improvement in terms of performance, thus it also requires different motherboard design/power/thermal configurations.
For the best N17 generation graphic experience, N17 generation thermal module and power solution is not compatible with old generation.
Please buy the whole new N17 system instead of MXM upgrade if you want to experience new graphic performance.
Thank you and have a good day."

It's quite the turn around if MSI actually comes through with Pascal MXM upgrades for the GT80/GT80S and GT72/GT72S after that statement, to everyone that asked.
The new response seems more like placation to keep people buying new laptops, and to buy some time of continued good will.
"Our marketing team will announce program in the following month so please kindly wait for the announcement."
If MSI is going to actually follow through on their promise, they should state that clearly now, not give us BS stalling tactics to keep us fantasizing they are going to eventually follow through.
Quit yanking our chains MSI!!

I fully expect MSI to step up and do the right thing else face a very costly lawsuit. While the end user may not see much in terms of restitution it would cost MSI not only huge amount of money but also publicly tarnish the gains they've made in the laptop market.
That said I would expect only the 1060/1070 as an upgrade path.
Regardless the public pressure you've all created on them recently seems to have worked and good on them for stepping up to the plate and rectifying the situation (at least it seems they will). -
OK then is the fan noise as bad as they say on the vy model?
Pretty sure a gtx 1070 uses more power but wondering how it handles it, so far I hear conflicting reports. -
I hope so man, I really hope so. There are a lot of disappointed people out there, and the word really hasn't spread very far yet.
MSI needs put out a clear statement *now* that Pascal MXM upgrade cards are in process and will be coming out for the GT80/GT80S and GT72/GT72S in the near future.
MSI telling us a non-descript announcement is coming in a month from Marketing isn't reassuring. -

Even better than upgrading the gpu! You're getting a whole new laptop, but it depends on if you have to pay a small fee to trade though; should be the price you would have paid to get just the gpu upgrade kit.

Just read the notebookcheck review for Asus ROG Strix GL502VS with gtx 1070 http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Asus-ROG-Strix-GL502VS-Notebook.171191.0.html
and compared it to MSI GTVR62 with gtx 1070 http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT62VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro-Notebook-Review.171215.0.html
How come that the temps for asus is almost the same if not a little bit better than MSI, while having higher gpu clock ?

I read those reviews as well and apparently the Msi is slower compared to the vs but I think they might have gotten a bad unit over there because the Msi has a thicker chassis, and that should be better for temps and clocking ability.

I have the 1060 GT62 currently and its a beast. It runs ridiculously cool, has G-Sync, and isn't overly large. However I am returning it for the 1060 mainly due to a defective space bar (fails to register where my thumb hits at least 50% of the time and is highly annoying when typing. My "old" 970m GE62 had same keyboard and did not have this issue so I assume its isolated.
Yes the 1070 version at $1799 releases on that date and I will be picking it up from Micro Center. I'll probably just take store credit.birdyhands likes this. -
I am really torn between these two laptops atm, the crazy thing is the cheapest MSI gt62vr would be 2100 euro and the cheapest asus would be 1700 only 8gb ram on amazon.

For real. I was looking at the GT62 myself. I know it's a tad heavier than I want, but the fan noise sounds low. And 6.5 lbs doesn't sound THAT bad. Plus G-Sync, I wouldn't mind trying that out. I could always return it if it's just too big.hmscott likes this.

Forgive me if you already answered this somewhere else, but what's your take on the fan noise in heavy gaming?

I had a GT60 (lol maybe u remember you helped me upgrade it), but man the redesign did good things. I saw it in person the other day at a pretty expansive computer shop near me (saw MSI GE62, GT72, GT73, GT62, GS43, GS63, GT80 (old tear
). And man the new GT62 feels so much better built. I don't know how I feel about it being so much fatter than a P650RS though, especially when it seems the RS runs cool too.

Trade in program? I called it.
Will be interesting to see the cost though. Why do I have a bad feeling about this. I bet they only offer me like $500 toward a GT73. -

Anyone have any links to reviews of the P775DM3? I'm considering one as a DTR with a 6700K and a 1080. I don't want SLI, so I think this is the best bet since I can lug it around easier than the P870DM3. However, I'm not 100% about thermals and acoustics. Any help will be appreciated.
