Ok. Do as you like, I don't recommend personal credit be used for disposable items. Invest wisely, and use disposable cash for disposable items and recreation.

Staying out of debt is a much more fun way to live. :)

Interesting, I will have to wait for this one over the Razer Blade 14. The OLED screen in the 13 R2 is fantastic and I am glad to see it return for this revision.

And all of the BGA chips from Intel is badly binned aka ****y overclockers. You will never get a binned chips like Xm/Mx or K processors. Nice with 4.0GHz and +1.4V. Or maybe [email protected] on all 4 cores is tempting? Yeah, Time has changed in the DELLIENWARE camp  Now in line with Acer and whatever other brands models with soldered i7

Instead of upgrading Dell would rather use that money to pay into their extended warranty. Lord knows with locked down BGA you're going to need it.
Alienware is barely a shadow of it's former self.

As a percentage, soldered surface mounted part failures are few and far between.

When it happens it's tragic, but in all the years of running way too many computers with millions of soldered parts, CPU's and GPU's are the lowest on the scale of failure's I have personally experienced.

There are situations where incoming QA, storage and handling, or even assembly will cause a basket load of failures, but the customer should never see these failures.

Then again there are hundreds of millions of people that have been through dozens of devices each without a single soldered CPU or GPU failure.

    Good times :)

Well you can't miss what you've never had. I'd like a laptop with gsync. But chances are if your looking for portable. You're very unlikely to get that option with gsync. So for me it's not necessary. It's only a new thing relatively whilst we been without it for at least 10 years on gaming laptops

Tempted to sell the MacBook Air for that OLED AW13 but the price will probably be as much as the Eurocom Tornado F5 which has GTX 1070 and 6700K. :(

You think it will cost more than an AW15?
What's the price trend been between the 13 and 15? Trying to get an idea on price to see if I'll be saving any cash going to 13 rather than 15

The base model will be cheaper of course. Probably starting at $999.99 or $1099.99

I would want the OLED model which has been around $1,599.99 if I remember correctly. It is $1,199.99 right now.

You cannot completely customize specs like you were once able to otherwise I would just choose the base 13 with OLED and the high capacity battery(if there is a choice).

I think it will be pretty much on par with the AW15 this time around. Since it has quad core CPU, 1060 etc, I don't think it will be cheaper than the 15, and if you look at MSI etc they all charge premiums for the smaller form factor. Will have to wait and see, but I think the delta will be reduced this time because the hardware delta is smaller/doesn't exist in some configs.

I think 1099.99 is optimistic. Hope you're right, but I have doubts for the reasons mentioned above. Unless there are also dual core options, or 1050 or whatever.

As for customizing, yeah, unfortunately there are very limited combinations available now. Meaning, you want OLED, you might have to go for a faster CPU/GPU more RAM/SSD GB etc. I think the 1599.99 range is probably not crazy for the OLED version, but that's gonna be at least $500 less than the Eurocom Tornado F5 once you add Windows, SSD, more than 8GB of RAM etc. The Tornado is still going to win in terms of price/performance though, no argument there, I think the machines are aimed at slightly different people.

I'm not spoilt by oled...yet. But I have seen the TVs. They ARE but I think I can suffice. As long as I can get i7 quad and qhd option in it for cheap with a 10% discount. I'll be satisfied at what I pay. I'm Hoping in the end £1300. But that's still cheaper than a 1080p gs43 with no discount at £1500. So although there are haters of Alienware. That's not to be sniffed at if you can make it work for you.

Anyone else notice that the aw13 refresh is pretty much the same size as a 15 inch laptop. I looked at the clevo p650rs. Almost the same.

99.9% the width is a typo, no way is it as wide as the AW15. It is, however, deeper than many laptops because of the design (and about 2 inches less deep than the AW15).

You got me curious so I nerded out a little. Using this pic from the website:
    CS1703G0017_aw_laptop_alienware13_gaming_pdp_polaris_04.jpg
Knowing that the screen is 13.3, the width appears to be about 12.8 inches or about 325mm. Obviously a very rough approach so it might be say 330mm, but it's certainly not going to be "15.35 inches (390mm)".

The aw17 with the 1440p 120hz screen is only listed with a i7-6700hq. Does anyone else think that the cpu will bottleneck with that screen? And will this tn panel be the wva type thats been going around? It says that it's a tn-wva type on only one page. Every other page lists it as a tn panel without the wva at the end.

Apparently a day or so ago AW took away the 6820HK from the configurator, which invalidated some previous day builds that weren't commited / finalized.

I would call DELL, or Chat daily pestering them for the 6820HK option for the 120hz screen if you want it.

The 6700HQ is likely enough for most games, but some CPU intensive games, or games that demand more CPU for 120 FPS could feel limiting.

But, that's only if you are going to take the time to Overclock the 6820HK.

I'm less than convinced at what AW has done with the cooling for the aw17. From the pics I don't think it can cool a 1080. Is it going to be loud like most everything else? Seriously is the gt73 the only thing with proper quiet cooling out there? I'm losing hope. I need a laptop but am trying to wait for more verified options to be available. I need a review of the aw17 with the 1440p screen, how long is that going to take?

120hz 1440p with proper cooling, a gtx 1080 and a 6820hk, is that too to ask?
    Get with the program AW.

AW hasn't released the 1080 model yet, it might be a whole new frame with new cooling.

We haven't seen it yet, so there is no reason to jump on AW, yet ;)

Oh poop. I was counting on that 6820 for the AW13 :( The Aorus X3 has the 6820HK, and if AW13 is going to be 25%+ heavier and not be able to match it in performance that throws a wrench in my decision-making :/

The i7-6802HK is still an option for most 17 R4 configs and a couple 15 R3 configs; however, the i7-6820HK is not an option yet for those configs with the G-Sync screens.

That's the configuration most people want, the latest screens with G-sync, effectively removing the 6820HK for most people.

But, don't take our word for it, AW might change things at any time. This change only happened a few days ago. It might change again at any time.

Check it out for yourself, try to build a configuration you want, daily, until AW restores the 6820HK, or the 7820HK(?) replacement gets added ;)

Any updates on the 1050? Looks like the desktop card is coming end of October so hopefully we can expect the mobile version halfway through November? Or, perhaps the desktop and laptop card will be released at the same time...

The 1070 upgrade kit from Eurocom isn't SLI compatible, you can only upgrade to a single 1070 :(

    eurocom 1070 non-sli upgrade.JPG
    http://www.eurocom.com/ec/upgrade(2,348,0)ec

A single 1070 isn't quite as fast as a 980m SLI, but in single GPU only games the 1070 is much faster.

Yeah... I was about to make a post "Can it come already?"

Btw. a guy posted in the comments of wccftech or videocardz a link to a new firestrike benchmark (again only desktop 1050 Ti): http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/10417326/fs/10429134# Looks like the 1050 gtx Ti will indeed be exact performance of the 970m. Although they say desktop and mobile version will be the same, it's about time for an actual proof...

Besides... I wonder if laptops with GTX 970m will drop in price then. Not happy to see that laptops with 970m still come at a cost of 1.500€ in europe. A laptop with 1060 gtx is approximately 1.600€ and a laptop with 970m about 1.500€... How ridiculous is that? The 970m should be on the 1.000€ line now that the GTX 1060 replaces the price position of the former 970m.

The 1050 is a joke. I like how nVidia compares it to the two-and-a-half-year-old GTX 750 Ti and says it's a 3x improvement over the 650 which is even older. Compare it to the GTX 950 and 960, and the 1050 feels like nVidia's weakest budget offering ever. If only the RX 480 was a teeny bit cheaper...

    What's the beef bro?

The 1050($109)/1050ti($139) offers 1.5x-2x the 750ti($109-$215 at newegg) performance for the same or less price.

That puts many games at 60fps that were at 30fps with the 750ti... that would seem to be a great deal.

You can't have 1060 performance, it's gotta be less, how close did you expect it to be?

Lets wait for release and benchmarks to see just how close to a 1060 the new 1050ti performs, for 1/2 the price. :)

Ive got a single GTX980 in my P870DM-G.

Will the 1070 from this site be plug and play upgrade?

Ive just forked out for a P775DM3-G with a 1080 but might return it if this is a viable option. The 1070 should be a nice little upgrade for gaming at 1080p.

I'd check with your original system builder to see if they can source it for you, and/or check with Eurocom for availability and ordering.

In this Eurocom video page on youtube there are links to follow in the description, as well as in my previous post (link to Eurocom to order):

The 1070 upgrade kit from Eurocom isn't SLI compatible, you can only upgrade to a single 1070 :(

Send them the link to the Eurocom video and ordering page, and ask them why Eurocom can do it - and they can't... then ask them to "figure it out" and make it work for your laptop. :)

I fear its too late for me now.

My new machine arrives tomorrow and I the P870DM is just going to get forgotten about.

    Or so nVidia claims.

How close did I expect it to be? Certainly not as bad as it is now. Let's put it in perspective, in terms of Fire Strike and Fire Strike Ultra scores.

GTX 950 scores ~1400 to 1500 in Fire Strike Ultra. The GTX 1050 Ti is barely 300 points better, based off VideoCardz.

Now, the 960 scores relatively similar to the 950 in FS Ultra, but the 1060 practically doubles that. In real-life situations, the increase is even greater.

    See what I mean?

    950 -> 1050/1050 Ti = increase in performance by ~20%.
    960 -> 1060 = increase in performance by 100-120%.

Let's wait and see indeed. I don't expect the 1050 Ti to be anything better than 60% as fast as the 1060, and this is a best-case scenario.

For notebooks especially, this is pretty crap, given that one can get notebooks with the 965M or 970M at very reasonable price points.

Well, if you ordered your new machine from the same place, they likely don't want to help you with your P870DM because they know they would lose the sale of the P775DM3-G 1080.

It's up to you, but that's a lot of money to spend back to back, P870DM then a P775DM3-G, it's a bit of a waste of resources.

Maybe send back the P775DM3-G 1080 and wait things out for a little while.

That 980 outta give you plenty of gaming power to "limp" along on for a few months.

For me the noise factor, heat factor, and lack of known screen options - did you get the new 1440p 120hz screen? - make me want to wait.

Your new P775DM3-G is about to become old again soon, with the Kaby Lake Series 200 motherboard chipset coming out after the 1st of the year. And, maybe Pascal refresh around that time too, not to mention AMD's new GPU's.

It's costly to keep upgrading every 6 months just to stay in front of performance releases ;)

If the performance of the 1050ti is 60% of the 1060, and costs $139, where's the problem with that?

Those tests are on pre-production drivers, in who knows what environments, there will be plenty of reviews and tests upcoming to get a better picture of the performance.

Didn't go for the same reseller this time round and went for the P775DM3 chassis as that is the only option in the UK for single 1080.

This is the last gaming laptop that I will be purchasing or at least plan to purchase.

That 1050/1050 Ti is underwhelming, it better be priced competitively in the notebooks. Why do they insist on putting so low amount of cores?(640/768). It can barely balance what it lacks in cores as speed. If 970m had 7000mhz memory speed too then it would be way better.

You sounded eager to send back the P775DM3-G and upgrade your P870DM to a 1070, why not do it?

That Eurocom 1070 upgrade is a new option so it's going to take some research to figure out how to do it with your laptop, but it sounds like a worthwhile effort.

Please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Interesting. The 1050 Ti is just under the desktop GTX 960 performance, for ~$100-150. As for notebooks:
    • GTX 960m = 1.40 TF
    • GTX 1050 = 1.86 TF
    • GTX 1050 Ti = 2.14 TF
    • GTX 970m = 2.66 TF
However, the 970M is known to be a beastly overclocker, my own hit +332 MHz on the core, putting it at 3.51 TF (on-par with the 980M). The 1050 Ti will not be able to pull the same party trick since custom vBIOS for Pascal is currently a tough nut to crack.

Yeah... and not only that I'm afraid, a major amount of the performance of the 1050 over the 960m is only achieved by the much higher base clocks and not the die-shrink. So basically a superclocked 960m (at least for the 1050 non-Ti).

In that, it will not only produce much more heat than a 970m (which has slower clocks but more cores), but also less ability to overclock. Blargh...

I was struggling with choices. I need a work comp and I would like it to be able to game. Boss is being cool and giving me a budget. 1650, I can add to it for a better buy. But I would like a ThinkPad with a 1050ti in it. But I bet I'm dreaming. I doubt they're going to put a 1050ti in a system that previously only had a 940mx. But it sure would be nice.
