    An unlocked BGA processor in such a small, thin and light laptop is overly ambitious, IMO.

    Review of Alienware 15R3 by 3dnews.ru. Almost slaughtered!! The system shut down with maximum load of AIDA64. Nice!!
    [IMG]

    But after adding the load graphics card Dell innovation have greatly surprised...
    [IMG]
    Within 3 minutes the system forcibly shut down without warning. After switching on and run AIDA64 turned out that processor simply overheats, reaching a critical temperature of 99 degrees, while throttling the same was only 12%. What prevented the system to throw off frequency is much harder to prevent such an outcome - a mystery for us.

    [IMG]

    Conclusions
    New Dell Alienware 15 R3 - a modern high-performance notebook, made in accordance with the needs of the most demanding users. The company's designers have gone in the right direction and successfully update the look of the device while maintaining high build quality and materials.
    Alienware - a brand for which some are running as per Apple. To some extent this legislator "mobile gaming mode", but this time something went wrong. NEW even after updating the BIOS failed to pass one of the following stress-load is switched off after 3 minutes after the start. The laptop seemed strange and rather poor results in many test applications, to reach their full potential only playing a small part of them. A reduced thickness does not go to the benefit of built-in speaker system. Competitors put the acoustics of a class above, and in Dell about it at all, apparently, not thought, relying on something else.

    Advantages :

    an updated look, quality materials and assembly;
    a range of the most modern interface to connect to;
    high-performance filling (however, it is something limited), moreover, it is one of the first laptops with new NVIDIA GPU on board;
    quality semi-matt Full HD IPS (albeit not with the ideal setting);
    relatively efficient air cooling system with a fairly low noise levels (the latter, however, applies only to real work tasks);
    Capacious battery and decent time (for a given class of devices);
    a wide variety of modifications.

    Disadvantages:

    no field Factory Image Restore system with software and drivers from Dell;
    poorly tuned control logic processor performance at high loads - the system shut down if the maximum load of AIDA64;
    the performance of the main components is the limit - probably a problem at the program level;
    higher than its competitors with similar price when filling.

    Can not satisfy:

    the sound quality of the built-in speaker system is clearly lower than almost all its competitors;
    a simplified version of Tobii EyeX for the 15.6-inch model;
    only one, moreover, is not the fastest SSD-drive (albeit with support NVMe) - for such little money;
    laptop often can not get out of sleep (and sometimes just turn on) when operating on battery power, even with 100 percent charge - it is necessary to connect the power adapter;
    no CD / DVD-drive and card reader.

    Overview gaming notebook Alienware 17 R4: a mixed approach by 3dnews.ru

    Nor here are any surprises!!

    With the advent of the combined CPU + GPU stress situation is slightly different.

    [IMG]
    After 2 minutes, the processor temperature has reached the level of 94 degrees, including small throttling, frequency nuclei started to be discharged 2700-2900 MHz, and the temperature dropped to 83-90 degrees on average. Average CPU frequency after 13 minutes testing out the level at 2770 MHz, and the noise level did not exceed 43 dBA - much louder than when the load on the processor only, but you can live - most competitors with similar load is about the same.

    [IMG]

    Conclusions

    Laptop more - fewer problems. At least 17 Alienware R4 indeed proved more problematic and less version Alienware 15 R3. Not that absolutely trouble-free, but first about the pros and interesting moments. They are here, in addition to high-filling two: fast WQHD-screen with a vertical refresh rate of 120 Hz, and the support of G-Sync, as well as built-in full view of the control system Tobii IR Eye-Tracking. Actually, that's for the tandem, and it makes sense to give money.

    Also in the Alienware 17 R4 installed efficient cooling system, and still he has this light that the right oh - it really is very aesthetic, to a level not yet reached none of the manufacturers.

    And now - the shortcomings. First, during testing we are faced with a decent amount of software problems. Secondly, in this version of the Alienware 17 R4 a very bad color rendition - not affect the use of the best (albeit quick) TN + Film-panel, showing all the technology limitations. The rest of us enjoyed the novelty, but to say that this is the best 17-inch gaming laptop, we would not.

    Advantages:
    • an updated look, quality materials and assembly;
    • a range of the most modern interface to connect to;
    • high-filling;
    • Speed 120Hz TN + Film-standard display WQHD supporting NVIDIA G-Sync;
    • effective and not very loud air cooling system;
    • 12, the updated-area-customizable AlienFX illumination system;
    • complete system for tracking eye Tobii IR Eye-Tracking - works well when everything is fine with the drivers and management software;
    • worthy runtime (for this device class) and a relatively high charging rate;
    Disadvantages:
    • bad setting screen (read: poor color reproduction), coupled with low viewing angles and illumination uniformity on the black;
    • software problem (updates disrupting sound system and Tobii Eye-Tracking, problems with exit from sleep problems with recovery system of the factory condition and so on);
    • high price with almost the same filling as the competition, and availability low.
    Can not satisfy:
    • level of installed speaker system is not very consistent with the price of the notebook;
    • limited, to 130 degrees, the level of the maximum screen angle for TN + Film-version with a 120 Hz scan;
    • the location of the front-end connectors;
    • no CD / DVD-drive and a memory card reader.

    Nothing particularly surprising about these reviews, eh bro @Papusan ? I can't understand why people would buy the 15r3 when the Tornado F5 is more powerful with proper cooling and MXM/LGA. @Mr. Fox @Talon @Diversion

    Damn guys, can't forgive myself for being so stupid and buying that crap of a laptop - 17 R4, it's mobo got burned in a goddamn month, A MONTH Carl! And it's been months I'm waiting for replacement as soldered CPU&GPU don't give hopes to buy just a mobo (and they are not available anywhere anyway). I just got carried away with huge discounts at that time and haven't bought extended warranty. I'm stupid, I know. Russians say "greedy pays twice", well I paid thrice.

    BGA is not even the problem. It's terribly designed machines trying to cram hardware they can't even cool down. It wouldn't matter if you had LGA if you can't even cool down a low end BGA chip without dying off.

    Of course that is the problem in reality, but how many machines who can't cool what they have do we know?

    Given the market trend for thin things, I fear what future holds for us, they'll start having everything on a single board, RAM, CPU, GPU, everything. That is not a future I fancy...

    Thinner and slimmer machines will always suffer from inadequate cooling. See Apple and Apple similar Windoze laptops. You can't change the physics laws. Not only the Cpu - Gpu will suffer, but all internal hardware. More and more BGA is one of the reasons we have Razorblade thin laptops today with terrible cooling. And worse it will be!! See... Nvidia will already coming back with so called high end <Mobile named> graphics with crippled TDP intended for even more crippled cooling!! Yeah, we haven't seen the start.

    Interesting that the smallest Alienware machine, the AW13 R3, has the best cooling... 2nd place in NBR'S top 10, too. The only thing wrong with it is pricing. For $1700, I could get a P650HS-G with 7820HK and GTX 1070, rather than 7700HQ and GTX 1060...

    Fair enough. No denying the AW13 is a really powerful machine for the price, but the competing model from Clevo (P640HK) is also cheaper. But then again, others may argue that the MSI GS43VR, Gigabyte Aero 14, Aorus X3 V7, etc are all also similarly priced to the AW13. Does jumping from a GTX 1050 Ti to a GTX 1060 in a 13 – 14" chassis really cost $500???

    You've definitely identified part of the problem being crappy design. But thanks to it being BGA he's in sh#t creek without a paddle - no replacement parts and massive downtime. The baby gets thrown out with the bath water so if one wants to sleep at night they're held hostage to expensive extended warranties.

    I think the AW 13 has a special OLED tax. Them pretty much being the only game in town let's them juice up the price.

    I don't understand, haven't read your whole story, but shouldn't RMA with AW get you replacement parts in days or weeks, certainly not months - they would have offered a replacement laptop before now.

    What's up with that? Did you burn it out on your own and it's not under warranty anymore?

    That may be the key thing to note for others, don't do something that voids your warranty - that will severely limit your options.

    Even if you were at fault AW should still offer repair - at cost - for the laptop.

    So, what's up?

    Yeah, fair enough. The FHD version is roughly price-competitive with the GS43VR. But still, the P640HK is only ~ US$1000. So GTX 1050 Ti —> GTX 1060 = $350 price jump for roughly the same machine otherwise. Even the AW13 GTX 1050 Ti version is US$1050. Heh. The coincidence.

    The problem is I had a default 30 day warranty, haven't extended and I am living quite far from US, so by the time I received it, it was already out of warranty lol. Problems with the laptop started right off the bat, mainly extreme hotness and unbearable noise levels. I have opened and repasted it several times and I'm quite confident it was done nicely. At some moment I had many electricity surges and that was when my laptop suddenly shut down. I guess super temperatures during gamings with these surges might have caused this. Our Dell rep office is trying hard to get at least a discount for replacement or repairs, but with no valid warranty it is taking a lot of time. Anyway, I'm not too hopeful, at the very least I'll sell it for parts, maybe I can get 25% of the cost, would be already good enough :) Interestingly, my old 7970M clevo has never had any problems with surges, temperatures or this infamous card and considering I bought it in 2013 from ebay for 800 bucks, that was a jackpot of investment. Even now there aren't any games I can't play at least in medium settings! That is why I am praying to God AMD comes up with something competitive as I really liked their price-performance point.

    What dealer sold you a new laptop with a 30 day warranty?

    They all come with 1 year, and they come with an option to extend to 2-4 years.

    I'd follow up again with the vendor, and work with them to get an extended warranty for this unit enabled, and use your 1 year "default" warranty before that expires.

    Even the refurb's from Dell come with more than 30 days, a 90 day limited warranty.

    I think someone is pulling your leg, you should have gotten way more than 30 days warranty.

    I'd work around who you are currently working with and call the Dell support for the country of origin, and ask what the in country warranty is, then have your "handler" handle returning for RMA.

    Well, Dell's saying your request is under consideration and the local rep says they should answer in a week or so, but I'm not sure they're going to accept my laptop as I have repasted it with LM, the rep says LM generally voids the warranty, so I can only wait.

    Hmmm, you didn't mention that before :(

    LM is supposed to not be allowed by Dell, but you could have repasted with a "normal" paste before sending it in for the RMA, then you would have been fine.

    That's usually what I recommend anyway, return it for RMA as close to stock as possible - remove extra parts that aren't OEM - return RAM / Storage to stock and restore the original OS install as it came out of the box.

    Those are all standard "sanity" tests anyway - to verify failure isn't due to something added hardware and software wise - a good test run before shipping is a good idea to make sure putting things back to stock didn't fix the problem.

    Also, Liquid Metal isn't just toxic to the Dell repair people, it's a high chance some dripped out and messed up a component / motherboard causing the problem in the first place, that's why I don't recommend LM at all.

    Sorry to hear this. I hope Dell has mercy on you and does the repair.

    As a last ditch effort, try asking if you can take it back, remove the LM and replace with a "normal" paste, if Dell will allow you to send it back in for RMA.

    Good luck :)

    I also thought there was a leakage of LM on the mobo, but the guys at the repair shop said it was a general mobo failure as I tried to be very careful with LM and isolated it with a thick tape around the chips. The guys at the local rep office have already reported LM to Dell, so I don't think I can revert it now :) I also usually refrain from using LM but this laptop was hot as hell and no normal paste would really work, even with LM alone I could not reach tolerable temps, only the combo of LM and UV worked somehow, but still the temps stayed at mid-high 80s. Btw, the problem was purely with CPU ("genius" tripod design) as GPU stayed quite cool.

    Anyway thanks for the support, there is always a bright side of things - I will be much more attentive when choosing a laptop from now on. Jesus, that tripod crap.... now whenever I read a review and see a tripod design my eyes start to bleed and I immediately close the page, the browser, the display so not to see that hell :)

    Yeah, The new TRIPOD heatsink design is meant for cooling the new low powered flimsy thin JokeBook's. Less screws because the MB haven't places for normal numbers of screws. This tells you everything!! It's terrible!!
    IMG_0439.PNG IMG_0440.PNG
    See one of pict above... 3 heatpipes for the Cpu. Are they kidding me? Only 1 pure pipe for the Cpu!! Shared pipes doesn't count. Or I'm blind?

    Now I'm not an expert in heatpipes, but doesn't that look like there will be a not of heat transfer between GPU and CPU during high loads that will cause both to throttle faster? I mean, the connecting pipes are quite thin and they look like they will actually heat each other component more rather than help with cooling.

    P775 also has those unified heat pipes design, but they are a bit more serious looking at least, thicker and considerably better equiped for cooling, at least looks like it..

    With fully load on graphics and processor, the processor will suffer. A very unwanted design in any notebooks. And bigger chances for Uneven fit. But Put this crippled TRIPOD design on top and you have a even more terrible cooling solution. Tripod is created for lack of MB space. 4 screws need more place on the MB. Some notebooks you barely see the MB. Very small. But big battery.

    I don't have personal experience with laptop of this design, but I like the theory behind what they're trying to achieve. What they're doing is trying to use the CPU heatsink to dissipate GPU heat if the CPU is only lightly loaded - and conversely they're trying to dissipate CPU heat using the GPU heatsink if the GPU is lightly loaded. I think it's a neat idea, but I know in practical terms there can be some issues in trying to get perfectly flat heatsink to silicon chip contact on these 'connected heatpipe systems' - I read that people have struggled to get the heatsinks to sit perfectly flat, I think this design doesn't allow for manufacturing tolerances very well.

    The main problem that can arise is if the GPU and the CPU are both loaded, which is a typical usage scenario for a game, it causes the whole system to throttle and slow down more or less...

    Looks like it, but most probably they will be charging MORE for decreased performance and worse thermals. NGreedia in all glory.

    Yep, this Max-Q looks like a marketing stunt.

    Pay 1080 money for 1070 (or less) performance.

    But hey, you get a slightly thinner laptop for bragging purpose! Isn't what this is all about?

    I prefer my high-performance laptops thick that way they get proper cooling.

    talking to my friends they just hear and believe anything nvidia marketing told them, and truly believe theres a new generation with stronger and lighter laptop smh.

    Sites like Gizmodo didnt help either. Why in the world would they compare a GTX 880M to a 1080, that right there is a big red flag.

    GTX 880M = hot, big, old Kepler. GTX 1080 = even hotter, bigger, Pascal. Smart marketing, to compare two generations of tech, to make the WOO-HOO 300% YOOO statement.

    Basically they're just going to bring M's style GPUs again. I seriously doubt we will be able to see more desktop-like perfomance in the near future. Add to that paid reviewers that aren't honest and you get the perfect marketing strategy. If they only had competition on mobile..

    Connecting the CPU & GPU with a heatpipe is just gonna result in the CPU & GPU temps being similar, it doesn't mean less heat is removed from the whole laptop with this kind of design (provided the heatsinks are making good contact with the silicon chips). I don't see why it should inherently lend itself to throttling behaviour - CPU throttling temperature should be in the high 90's, Pascal GPU throttling temperature is 92 degC - these temperatures are similar enough that I don't see how they would induce throttling, unless your CPU is totally loaded and in the high 90's then this could transfer extra heat to the GPU which has a lower throttling temperature, therefore causing the GPU to throttle earlier than it otherwise would have if they weren't connected. (Heat only flows in one direction, from high temperature to low temperature)

    The main problem was that if both the CPU and the GPU have very high output heats, they will grow hotter together, or at least the one that is colder will inherently grow hotter, and this will not be so good in the long run.

    On the other hand, you have a good point, and it should help in many cases.

    Hopefully most people will do some research and read reviews, benchmarks, and comparisons to make a finely honed intelligent decision about their next laptop purchase :confused: :eek: :D :rolleyes:

    Me too. Thin and light always sucks. I want no part of that for a high-performance laptop... recipe for disaster.

    I'd say it could help in both cases. If you've got something spiking really high the other will take some load off even if it's increasing the overall heat.

    Why? I think the answer is so shockingly simple that many will totally miss it. Answer: Because they are stupid, ignorant, liars, or an unhealthy conglomerate of those things; and, most consumers are gullible enough to believe whatever they are told. After all, if it is posted on the internet or streams from YouTube it has to be true. The number of 'likes' it gets on Facebook is additional corroborating evidence.
    Since almost all information available through "professional" channels is unreliable and suspect, the question is who wants to be among the first to throw caution to the wind, play the role of guinea pig and open their wallet for what some of us expect to be the next gamer-boy abortion to emerge from the smelly butt cheeks of the Green Goblin.

    I don't really care about the Max-Q cards... so long as they don't eventually displace the notebook cards that are within 10% performance of their desktop counterparts. Which I'm concerned about. We finally achieve "near parity" with desktop cards with Pascal, only for this... one step forward, two steps back.

    Gotta say though, the announcement of the Max-Q cards is vindication for @J.Dre, who thought all along that nVidia would release new "M" variants for Pascal at some point.

    @Papusan @hmscott @Mr. Fox and anyone else who can help -

    Could you guys please tell me which 15" laptops support the full-fat 1080 (not the castrated Max-Q version)?

    The one I know about is the MSI 16L13 barebones (used in the Eurocom Tornado F5 and the EVOC 16L-G-1080).

    Thanks in advance.

    I mean 1080 in MSI 16L13 barebones isn't fully maxed like the fully Clevo-Msi version, but the only *normal, not castrated as Max-Q) 1080 for 15" laptops. Aka 150w

    Yeah, I saw on Eurocom's site that the 1080 was restricted to 150W. Still, with a @Prema BIOS, it should be great.

    I know, I only mentioned with stock vBios :) None of the 15" laptops JOKEBOOKs use Gtx1080.
