I wonder if the number of power FETs is an indicator of wattage? The MSI 1070 that I have has 6, the 180w 980DT has 5, the 200w 980DT has 7, while the 980M has about 2-3.

I'm talking about the grey things with "R22" printed on them.

    Tl;dr Yes.

The "R22" things are chokes though. The chips up the top are the fets, the important ones to keep cool. The fet together with the choke make up a VRM or 'phase'

    http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1229-anatomy-of-a-motherboard-what-is-a-vrm-mosfet

The one thing I dont think they mention clearly enough in that guide is that the more phases, the more wattage that can be put through the whole VRM setup and be "cleaned" so the higher the power draw can go without causing voltage fluctuations that cause the chip to malfunction i. e. crash. So all else being equal, more is better. But quality and specs can also come into it; more lower quality/lower spec phases may not necessarily be better

I vaguely remember Khenglish saying somewhere that the FETs on the 980M were in some way more complex doubled up units so "only 3 phases" wasnt as bad as it would appear if they were standard.

You mean the small black ones that are paired above the R22 chokes? If so there's 12 of those.

So the 1070 has 6 phases?

Looks to me like 5 for core + 1 memory. But without an analysis of the components who knows what stress a particular load puts on the VRM setup - which I can't do because it requires actual knowledge of this stuff ;)

If (when) I get to modding mine I probably won't go higher than 150W. Pascal looks like a nightmare to reliably and predictably control with some kind of trickery getting in the way of user settings and readouts, and actual core behavior. Which is one reason I held out for so long, waiting to see what Pascal was capable of when unlocked (hasn't happened), I willing to give RX480 MXM a go (didn't happen in Clevo), gave up after waiting forrrreevvvvveeerrrrrr for Vega... I feel dirty indirectly supporting MSI and Nvidia but at least my money went only to a spare parts dealer somewhere in AZ

If you've seen photos of the 180W 980DT it has a 4 + 1 choke arrangement, hence my assumption that the MSI 1070 could do it with its 5 + 1 choke arrangement.

But as you say, it's all guess work.

EDIT: looks like @Coolane has been running TDP mods since they first posted about it on techinferno in January 2017.

my laptop draws a total of about 170W when using a cryengine game so I have at least 160W of play. I could push the 1070 to 170W for a total of about 220W.

Guys, how would I be able to undervolt my gtx1070? Is there a topic or a guide somewhere? Is it with MSI afterburner?

I'm not sure about undervolting, but if you're looking for better temperatures and max performance I reckon you could do the following I've just thought of when I read your post:
    1) Overclock GPU to it's max stable core overclock value offset, e.g. +100 or whatever it happens to be
    2) Use the Power Slider on MSI afterburner: reduce it to a power value that produces temperatures you want to see.

By doing the 2 things above, you're increasing the core clock for any given voltage point (kind of like undervolting in some ways in as much as you're getting maximum performance efficiency at any given voltage point), and by reducing the Power Slider you're controlling your temperatures. So, I kind of see this as a very similar thing to undervolting when you combine those 2 aspects. You have access to the Power slider on mobile - I'm not sure?

Hi guys, so I recently bought a MSI GS63 Stealth Pro with a GTX 1060 last week. When I first started playing with it, everything was going well and temperatures were at stable temperatures. Overwatch on Ultra was no biggie, at most it got warm around some parts. However, about two days ago, I've been having temperature issues with it. The CPU/GPU are getting to around 90 degrees Celsius according to the MSI "Dragon Center" after a single game of Overwatch whereas in the past, I could play for 10+ games while it would stay below 80ish.

Is anyone familiar with issues surrounding this model of the graphics card or of the laptop? I'm still running it plugged in & at high performance mode but the heating has just gone crazy in the past few days.

It's not 10 degrees hotter in your room is it?! I'd verify that the fans are still spinning, you can even check fan rpm using HWInfo 'Sensors'. Do you live in a very dusty area, heatsinks & intakes clogged with dust - blow out with can of compressed air. And then finally, if the previous points didn't yield results, then maybe your heatsink has become dislodged slightly through travelling knocks or perhaps the thermal paste between the CPU & heatsink has 'pumped out' over time (which normally only happens if the heatsink is not making good flat contact in the first place) - which might be solved by repasting the CPU.

Most likely one or two loose screws for heatsink. Tighten them or RMA.

Yeah, with a new laptop definitely worth considering RMA if you've got a lemon! If simple steps to remedy problem don't resolve then RMA.

Also to avoid confusion don't use the word 'lemon'. A lemon is an item that had the same failure multiple times within warranty and has had repair attempts made each time. It is not an item that has trouble near the beginning of ownership, that's just a regular old defect that's covered by warranty.

Informally yes, but there are places where there are actual lemon laws (mostly for cars), and a lot of people like to throw terms like that around for emphasis without understanding the legal and policy baggage.

I agree it's a bad design, but something is amiss here. The cooling of the cpu and gpu is completely separated and in the other stress tests have a drop from turbo to non turbo speeds on the cpu. It must be drivers or some comfiguration in Windows that puts the cpu in the 1.0ghz because it's not thermal limits.

One of the cheaper GTX laptops out there doesn't perform well on one of the most demanding games you can run on it? I'm shocked.

But seriously, something is a little weird with that, I'm pretty sure Sagers based on the N85XX don't do this.

Regardless of price though, It's pretty miserable when it doesn't add up to the sum of its parts because as mentioned there's thermal headroom. Perhaps it has a battery boost that's only good for 1 Cinebench run or something. This kind of machine shouldn't be sold in that state.

The review is in German, but there is a cinebench table there and it seems that it maintains the cpu load OK.

Maybe it starves the cpu when the gpu is loaded, it's the only scenario that makes sense.

Is that from the same review? This one says it's drops off in the 2nd+ runs. But yeah it should definitely have enough power on a solo CPU run. Something suspect is going on.
Yep, it wouldn't be the first time we've seen starved PSUs when the GPU/CPU are both loaded.

Yes I that same review e drops from 700ish to 600ish and keeps stable.

It shouldn't drop, but it's a budget laptop. This kind of drop should not show itself that much in gaming, is just the typical non-turbo drop.

There should be something else happening.

Here you go, this is how you get the best out of it:
    https://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/gsync101-input-lag/

Limit framerate to 3 fps below screen refresh rate (so 117fps). Use Rivatuner Statistics Server program for best frame rate limiting (don't use NVidia Inspector). Enable v-sync option in NVidia control panel as global option (in addition to obviously having G-sync selected) - explained more clearly than I can, at that link above.

Feel free to jump in and join me in setting the record straight and calling B.S. on this ludicrous article. Great example of why consumers are so stupid and so many think BGA is OK. With clowns like this, that supposedly know what they are talking about, (clearly not the case,) is it any wonder that the sheeple live in darkness and believe in lies.

Apparently this was regurgitated lies from a script EVGA provided to say what they were told to say. My 1080 GPUs pull 240W all by themselves with a nice overclock. I think this might qualify as one of the most inaccurate and misleading advertisements of a laptop than anything I have seen before. We're living in sad days. If they actually believe even half of what was said, or they knowingly lied to such a great extent--either way--the future of high performance notebooks is very bleak.

Yeah, it's sad to see that the Razer scam and now the Max-Q scam has inspired additional hyperbole aimed at convincing unsuspecting buyers which scam is better.

We all know that 240w isn't enough for powering a GTX 1080 OC + 7820HK OC, Razer was first worst with 250w, then Max-Q with 230w, and now this laptop claims 10w more @ 240w as best.

All fall within the range of "sucks", and yes they all want to compete for the title of which sucks least.

I don't think any of them qualify as "best" of "class", they all have no class. :)

It's actually not a review. It is only a press release. But still... EVGA is publishing false and misleading information, and Guru3D.com is an accessory to their crime by sharing misleading information published by EVGA. People that do not know much rely on "authorities" to give them accurate information. I could see some people reading ridiculous crap like that press release and relying on the information to their own detriment. Guru3D.com should be above that and hold higher standards. If they are going to publish such rubbish they should at least include a disclaimer that the EVGA press release contains unsubstantiated marketing hype that is not consistent with well-established facts.

    Just asking a question here but in all my years of Clevo ownership I don't ever remember seeing any features like these;

"With performance and overclocking in mind, the EVGA SC17 1080 G-SYNC Gaming Laptop features a FULL GUI BIOS with mouse function to give you complete control over all aspects of performance, voltage and advanced settings to customize your gaming machine. A Clear CMOS button directly on the chassis helps you recover from an unstable overclock and custom fan curve control keeps your laptop cool and quiet."

The older fan profile was either auto or max. I think the newer control panel inside Windows lets us choose though.
I don't recall a full GUI BIOS ever or a CMOS clear button though. Did we ever get anything like that? It does seem like there's some decent ideas here that could be of benefit even in our machines.

What a load of utter crap EVGA is putting out. @Mr. Fox put it best - his 1080 takes up 240W on its own with a nice OC. I think EVGA should stick to desktop components, at least in the enthusiast class.

Just about every brand produces one or two good ideas. No reason to be critical of that. They should learn from one another. A good idea is a good idea. But, the EVGA press release is filled with multiple examples of lies and misrepresentation. Clevo stock BIOS sucks. But, we have @Prema to right that wrong. It would be foolish to buy this because the BIOS has a nice-looking UI. That might be nice, but it doesn't make it work better, and sure as hell doesn't make it all they claim it to be.

EVGA, ASUS, MSI (excluding one 15-inch model whitebook), Gigabyte... all of them sell turdbooks. But, we don't see ridiculous claims like this from ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte. We saw similar lies and misrepresentation from Acer with their Predator turdbooks, but I don't think most people take Acer seriously anyhow, and nobody should.

Seriously? A GUI BIOS is a performance improvement?

Expanded OC BIOS's have been released already either by third parties or more recently from Asus/MSI as part of their normal BIOS.

For a long time laptop BIOS's have had limited OC capability, except for the locked pages available only with a unlock sequence, but usually that is traded among users with access to those that seem like they can benefit from it without shooting themselves in the foot.

When the GUI BIOS showed up in Desktops it seemed like a step back, a bunch of mousing to get around to features that we already had, and then later more automated features like performance tuning were added, but those still haven't tuned things in the right direction for most of the time - too high voltages, too conservative OC's.

So, I don't think the GUI BIOS is a "new" thing in any form, and doesn't add to the desirability of a laptop.

I never said it was a performance improvement at all, just that it might be desirable and asked if Clevo / others had it. I like the CMOS clear button idea, as well, and more control of fans is never bad.
I'm not going to blindly hate all features of it because of BGA rage if there's some things that we could benefit from in our own notebooks.
