Depends. Your rom should be about 63kb. When I fried my card, it was a rom that hadn't copied to the disk correctly, so it was like 20-something kb. Rare incidence. To determine if it was wrong or right, what size was it, and what was it's exact name?

The exact name of the rom i flashed was 4801100.rom. It is 62.5 kb. What was that guy talking what revision i had? anyway, would you recommend blind flashing it to stock first? probably. little side note, the cd that i burned nvflash and the roms to is acting weird, when i put the cd into my dad's old inspiron 1100 that im typing on now, the computer made weird noises and restarted. and when i look in my computer it can only recognize the cd like half the time, along with the weird noises.

OK, that's a stock GS ROM. I haven't got the slightest clue why it wouldn't work. Were you able to blind flash it back to life? A revision 0 card can be flashed with a GTX BIOS, therefore making it clock higher/perform better. A revision 1 card has Dell's kiss of death, and cannot be flashed with the 7900GTX BIOS. It can still be overclocked, but will still remain a 7900GS, and not a hybrid 7900GSX. I don't know what the performance difference is as I had a rev 0 card from the get-go, and never looked back. Regardless of which rev it is, you will see nice gains from overclocking. You can't find out what revision you are until you fix your laptop though. I would HIGHLY recommend that you use a USB thumb drive and NOT a CD. Both technically do the same thing, but USB is a hole-shot every time.

Oh, and as for the answer to your other question, it is VERY easy to upgrade your Dell video card in a 1705 or 1710. You have to remove the keyboard and the underlaying screws, then remove the old single or dual-pipe heatsink covering both the processor and the current graphics card. From there you unscrew the graphics card and pop the new one into the MXM III slot and then screw it in, etc...

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EXTRA THERMAL PASTE WHEN RESEATING THE HEATSINK! the old paste, once tampered with will act like an insulator. Just buy some AS5 at circuit city for about $6 and apply a rice grain size stripe on the processor and GPU before screwing down the heatsink!

Any other questions, see here: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread151471.html

I must say i am very, very annoyed. First of all i dont know why flashing the bios didnt work in the first place, as i followed all the instructions 100%. Is it possible to just use coolbits instead of flashing? Um, also, i tried the blind flashing with a usb flash drive, followed all instructions again, and it made all the right beeping and lights and restarted itself and now the light of the monitor won't come on. And to make things worse, my friend is warming his frozen yoohoo under his taint.

Im sending my laptop back to dell and saying that piece just crashed during oblivion and i want my money back(i will reluctantly settle for a replacement).

However, i am not going to have fury this weekend. And for any of you that have played that game, you know my pain. Fin. :(

you could look on ebay for a cheap 7900GS for your dell instead of replacing the whole computer which might take months even for a replacement. (Dell has shipping trouble sometimes)

    Anyways, http://cgi.ebay.com/Nvidia-Go-7900-...ryZ40161QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

that guy is very trustworthy and helpful. I talked to him about upgrading my computer a little bit and hes pretty down to earth. the card he is selling is a pre-flashed 7900 GS. Take a look at that, if not, send your laptop out for an RMA. :-/

So you flashed you card, broke it, and you're holding Dell responsible? I don't usually get caught up in morals and what-not on a public forum, but you should have weighed the risks before deciding to flash your card. Did you even read the warning at the top of the first page.

Flahing your card does technically void the warranty so the replacement card should come out your own pocket. But, nothing I say is going to change your mind. This kind of stuff drives me nuts, just needed to vent.

Hey there, I recently cancelled the order of my 1720 for a 1705.

I've read through this thread but haven't spotted this page:

    http://home.tele2.es/jlgm/peng.html

from what I gather I can just find out what Revision I have (1 or 0) and load up a bios and be able to overclock via software instead of hardware, has anyone else here gone about this route?

I don't think they make revision 0 cards anymore. What do you mean 'via software instead of hardware'?

TTalon where did you find your 7950GTX and what gains did you get over your stock(?) 7900gs?

I hit about 80C with current SIG.

It has been a while since Ive seen this thread, but I am overjoyed to see how many people have used it. It seems like many users have had safe and successful overclocks with the might 7900GS.

I have had my card overclocked at 470/1100 for over a year now with ZERO problems. I stopped monitoring my temps when I moved to Vista, but they were never over 75C when gaming. Id like to say that my oc gave my card a 15-20% increase in performance, which in my mind is worth it, especially since it is relatively safe. Anyways, I just thought some people would like to know this stuff, maybe not

Im hoping that my system along with everyone else's with the 7900GS will be able to handle games like Bioshock and Crysis that are just around the corner.

I was reading through his site and apparently his Bio's actually allow software overclocking rather than Bio's flashing oc'ing (meaning you can use ATI tool, Nvidia OC tools etc)

looks like he has all sorts of neat options in the bios like 1.24 volts but with stock clocks so you can use ATI tool or some other software to OC.

    edit:

Oh yeah, also I picked up my notebook off of the Dell outlet, so thats why im not sure if its a 0 or A 1

Hi, I've got an e1705 and Oblivions been sluggish at high res for me, so i want to overclock... The problem is though is I downloaded the ISO, burnt it to a CD, and when i try to boot it up I get an error, it was saying it couldnt load autoexec. I've dont it as the high memory option, and all the other ones, and i still get an error. It gets to a command prompt but when i DIR it doesnt show any roms at all.

I've tried redownloading the ISO, burning it with a different prgram, and different CDs, but it hasnt helped.

What am i doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

I just got Bioshock but the frame rates are kinda slow while play so I have to put the graphics down a bit and still the FPS is only about 24 so now I want to OC my go 7900 GS on my Dell e1705 (2 months old). I was just wondering that, if done correctly, that the steps on the first post would work? I'm just a little nervous to do this without asking =S lol
and also "8. From this point you have to select a ROM file to flash to your graphics card. The way you select it is by loading a ROM into a program called NvFLASH. Below is the list of all the files, I'll explain what they mean right after that" I don't quite understand that step. Do I have to download the a rom and that program first? Or will a list to chose from just pop up on that step. Thanks to anyone who answers :D

Guys who are having trouble with overclocking 7900gs..............
Unfortunately Dell now uses a different bios for the 7900gs cards.....so you can't flash the card using the bios on the image provided on the first page. If you do your screen will go completely blank and they only way you can fix it is using a blind reflash using a revision 2 driver of the 7900gs......I'm frankly quite annoyed that my card cannot be overclocked anymore......anyone know a way to get around this?

I've heard also that some people flashed a 7900gtx bios on their 7900gs's successfully, allowing them to increase memory clocks without getting artifacts.

Here's the site for more details

Hi guys, how can I tell what bios version of the video card I have? Was going to overclock then I saw that it doesn't work with newer revisions of the card. I got it in the last couple of months, so should I just assume I have it and that I can't overclock now? I'm a bit disappointed ><

Do not use any of the stormlifter or Julans dell bioses on your machine or it will be a big paperweight, the best thing to do is back your bios up in nibitor and edit the clocks manually and reflash with your own bios.

Hi, I recently flashed my revision 1 Nvidia 7900 GS with the following settings: 575/1150. It was on a Vista system and it was all working great. Then I just installed XP Pro corporate edition on the same laptop (Inspiron 9400). When I download the drivers from Nvidias site for the 7 series cards, I get this error message:
    ---------------------------
    NVIDIA Setup Error
    ---------------------------
The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.
    OK
    ---------------------------

    Can someone help me?

EDIT: I've fixed the problem. I just downloaded the newest driver off of s support site.

That is assuming that nibitor can properly identify and read the info from the bios. It can't with my Toshiba laptop so until the mvktech figures out my bios I am stuck using either ATITool or RivaTuner, which is much safer anyways than flashing your bios.

    Hi@all,

i got a question. I oc'd my card (7900gs) to 499 clock and 599 memory. All speeds above that caused artifacts. But after a few weeks, using that speeds without problems, i tried to go above that. Now i'm @ 599C and 699M without artifacts and a temperature of max. 75 C (I8Kfan) after playing armed assault for a few hours.
so i'm asking: how is this possible? did the gpu get used to the speeds or what? or is there something else wrong?

    thanks for the help guys.

This might sound strange, but I overclocked my 7900gs in my E1705 several months ago to 450/1100 (using this guide). No worries, completely stable, good temps, not a single hitch. Well as of late I'm getting artifacts and stuff (this is months after original OCing, and not messing with anything other than changing drivers and a few windows reinstalls after that). All of my temps are fine (maybe a degree or two over because I havent cleaned the dust out lately, but thats not the problem). The funny thing is I haven't really been gaming for a couple months, but when bioshock came out I decided to update my video drivers to those optimized ones (I think they were version 163.44 or something?) and start doing a bit more gaming (I had also updated once before that to the 92.77 version from laptopvideo2go.com, but I had only done a little gaming on them...however I DO recall seeing a few artifacts then too). I'm just having trouble pinpointing the problem because of changing drivers around a couple times and not having this problem in the past either. I'll go back to stock dell drivers soon to see if they go away (since that was what I was using when I first OCed), but I don't want to rule anything else out just yet. Any ideas or anyone could bounce off me? Haha, feel stupid asking about this, normally I have no trouble fixing crap, but this one eludes me.

Yeah so I bought a 1705 in august 2006. I decided to over clock it using the files listed at the beginning of this thread. I set the voltage to 1.24 and changed the speeds to 400 and 1100. The flash went through and everything was working fine. However after I restarted all I got was a blank screen the computer is on but nothing is happening. Does anybody have any ideas before I call up Dell to complain that my computer magically stopped working?

Ok, so I just got a brand new Dell XPS M1710 with a stock 7900GS.

Now, from my understanding, although I haven't read all 60 pages, are the newest 7900GS cards already unlocked and can be software overclocked with a tool like ATiTool?

I don't want to have to go through flashing and what not if I don't have to.

You will have revision 1 card i expect, i dont think they come unlocked at all and you will know if you try and overclock it, you will have to flash your card, but you can edit your own bios and adjust the clock levels and save it. Use nibitor to edit your bios.

this thread is awesome. just oc'ed to 450/1100 and crysis became playable at "medium" settings. get around 25fps in big outdoor areas, more if less stuff onscreen.

Hello, im fairly new to the whole ocing thing and managed to to oc my 7900 gs the first time using an iso (forgot the name ) that allowed me adjust the clocks by adjusting everytime i booted from the cd created from the iso. i was able to overclock to v6801200 at the highest and day to day @ v600/1200. Recently i saw a post for the jlmod iso. which to my understanding would allow me flash my gs with gtx bios creating a gsx . i created the cd and used it to flash my bios using the 790gsuov.rom because i was unable to use the gtx bios flash (received a error : mismatch gpu ) when i tried. using the gs bios flash i am able to adjust my clocks via atitool and nvidia control panel but cant keep it stable above 600/700. my question is how do i flash the gtx bios to my gs ?

C3TREO you had flashed it with a 7900gtx bios that is why it was letting you overclock to such high speeds!

TITO did you check which version of bios you had before flashing? I believe there are two versions of video card BIOS. Try blind flashing it if tht doesnt work then DELL is only one who can help

Yea I just found out about that last night........There's a way to recover ill try it today.

EDIT!! I was able to recover using JUANLU's flash. There should be warning about the two different revisions at the beginning of the thread.

Hi guys, I know this thread is old but I just found something weird, before i couldn't OC the card and i'm affraid of flashing the card. Today suddenlly I camed up with the thought that the 167.34 (the one for the 8800M)might give me better result (since they were made for laptop card) than the modded one. I just checked riva tuner and realized that the slider to change the clock of the card is not locked anymore. Can someone confirm this please, since I'm a newbie in overclocking and saw that you guys all must flashed the card to overclock it
p/s: i will try to post my score after OCing the card.

    edit: I finished 3D Mark 2006
    My spec is T7200 2GB 667MHZ Go 7900GS (440/550)
    My result is 3992 :D

I'd like to know if this works as well.

I'm a bit wary of flashing my BIOS. :D

You can checked my post above, it acctually works without any flashing, the score changed, i don't think 2GB of ram would make the score going to nearly 4K.
