When you benchmark, do you leave on i8kfan gui?

I flashed back to stock cuz I want some battery life in case I decide to game on the train. But its nice to know the comp has the ability to go fast.

if you don't volt mod it won't increase your temps. If you don't volt mod it will only drain the amount of power that it did before. The only way that it can drain more power is if you give it more volts. not to mention that when you are on battery the computer automatically scales back the clocks. You can't run it at full speed on the battery anyway.

Sorry, mine went up around 4 degrees. Are you using I8kfan? Anytime you run your engine faster, why would you not create more heat? When you volt mod you are asking your GPU to OC at even higher levels that would be flakey at stock voltage.

    Hello.

I OCed my card to 470/1100 1.0 volt yesterday with about 5 C increase

Today I OCed it to 520/1100 1.24 volt with about 10 C increase. When I used ATI tool today, I saw my temp go from 58 to 80 when the test only lasted about 3 mins. Should I stop at 520/1100 1.24 volt?

My cpu idles at about 49 - 55 C with i8kfangui on slow.

    Thanks!

80 is pretty high....I would go back a clock, certainly not more. But then I'm more conservative on this issue...

    Hello.

I OCed my card to 470/1100 1.0 volt yesterday with about 5 C increase

Today I OCed it to 520/1100 1.24 volt with about 10 C increase. When I used ATI tool today, I saw it jump from 58 to 80 when the test only lasted about 3 mins. I stopped manually aborted the test.Should I stop at 520/1100 1.24 volt? Can I push it further? I am being too paranoid?

After the test it went back down to 55 and idles between 49-55 with i8kfan on slow.

Is it recommended to leave on i8kfan when playing games. I know that it lowers your 3dmark scores quite a bit. Is it fine to turn it off to gain performance?

My plan was to have i8kfangui on during regular tasks, and turn off during games. Is that fine if OC it to about 600/1100 1.24 volt for example?

    Thanks!

Both my 7900's reach 79-80C after a long period of gaming stress. Sometimes I notice the fans kick on high lowering temps to 75C or so when logging temps.

clamchowder, if you know I8kfan wrecks your 3dmark scores, why would you leave this on full time? Yep, most people use it for day to day and to intially log your new OC temps, but OFF for games and benchmarks.

To answer your "can I go any further questions" you might want to read up on the 130 watt Power Supplies since your stepping into XPS territory ;)

i've talked with others about the 130 W. Like 5150 joker from notebookforums said 600/1100 1.24 volt doesnt need 130 W.

But I might get one still.

    Thanks

Does it really? i reOC'd to 500/1100 and reran 05 and 06 (btw, is that too high? i've been running atitool artifact scanner for 30min w/o error and it's only at 67'C) with I8kfan off and got marginal changes in the score...
    05 - 7821, 06 - 4301 (with I8kfan on, +/-10ish with it off)

If ya got no artifacts, great! Normally if your eaking out top scores you don't want anything stealing CPU cycles, no? The bios is going to take over on it's high temp limits by default,so imho, unless I'm logging temps I don't want it in the background.

lol i suppose. mmk thanks. :)
i always kept the fan utility on to check how hot it would get during the test so.. yeah. i guess i could just use atitool to do that though.

crap. i was running at 500/1100 fine for fear and i ran atitool for 30min with no problems but today i reran 3dmark06 and when the HDR tests came up, it started spazzing out like crazy. can that be caused by turning off stretching? (to keep aspect ratio). it's the only thing i've changed since i last ran it.

anyway, i dropped back to 480/1100 which is still 'good enough'

Im baffled with my 3dmark 05 score. I OCed my card to 520/1100 with 1.24 v and only got 7418! I am plugged in. I have the XG 91.34 modded driver. Im wondering even when I close i8kfangui, the computer thinks it's still running. I have the nvidia quickbar icon still on and dell quickset. I made sure nothing else is running. 3dmark05 is testing everything on default settings. All i do is press run and watch. Any ideas?

So you are not getting any high tempertures? Also, make sure that you set for Maximum Performance under the Nvidia settings.

I defragged, set on max performance and got

    3dmark 05 - 7701
    3dmark 06 - 4581

I will try different drivers now.

I think you just have to try yourself. Everyones cards have different performance levels. Find the stock settings for your card and just start OCing in little increments. Everytime you OC, test your card for artifacts ( programs : 3dmark05, 3dmark06, AtiTools) and monitor the temperatures (XG nvidia drivers, i8kfangui).

When I started I was nervous too and worrying if I would burn my card. Just be patient and too push your card too hard from the beginning.

I recently upped my OC to 550/1100 1.24vfrom 520/1100 1.24v and my 3dmark05 score went from 7791 to 8201! No increase in temps either!
Stock dell driver. The XGs gave me same performance and dell stock driver is more stable

Yeah, thanks for the guide, it could'nt be as simple as that.
I OC'd my card today to 575/1100 1.24V, with my fan spinning at low speed the GPU generates a temp of around 50C in idle condition and about 75C after playing games. Great!

I thought majin was originally correct because aren't we suppose to run 3dmarks on default settings so we all can compare? That's how it is for the notebookforums benchmark thread.

I you test 3dmark @1440*900 you will get almost the same score as if you test @1280*1024. The difference between these tests is in theorie 1%

hello, I will be getting my Dell Inpiron 9400 with 7900GS hopefully tomorow...

now I have been reading this thread & I don't know anything off overclocking, but I maybe want to try this, but have a few questions:

    - What is a safe clock speed? I mean safe that gives me a bit of a boost and I don't have to worry about heat problems etc.. (name of rom?)

    - Can i go back to default clock?

    - normally when you are on Battery, everything is clocked back to save battery life... will it also just clock back as normal after you OC it?

    - Anything else I need to know? (yes I read through the the thread)

-what's the difference between OC this way and OC with RivaTuner and other progs?

    THX in advance

    Hello Guys,

Last Thursday I got my Brand New Toshiba Satellite P105-S9312 With a GeForce Go 7900 GS, The Max Overclock I could reach with RivaTuner was 443/654...

I came up to this thread, And saw all the Bios on the ISO etc... Tried to volt mod to get a 1.24v Bios, at the minimum level 485/1100, and I've been getting an error no matter what Bios I try.

    This is it:

By any chance does anyone know what the problem is? and How can it be solved?

    Thank you,

    Th3R1pp3r.

Try the 450/1100 setting. you may gain 3C but should be safe enough.

    Yes

Not tested but I will. I never try to game on a battery.

The EPROMS are locked so we have to use the modified roms.

read somewhere else that the Driver of Nvidia were the problem, so i reinstalled and indeed, now it's gone :)

    anyway:
    7900GS @ 1.00 volt @ 450/1100
    temp (i'm using : I8kfanGUI)
idle with 2nd fan on slow: max 60° -> 68°
stress ATI tool: 17 min with 1st fan on slow, 2nd fan on slow/high: max 67°-> 75°

    Temperature control:
    1) turn on 50° turn off 40° 1st fan: off, 2nd fan: off
    2) turn on 60° turn off 50° 1st fan: off, 2nd fan: slow
    3) turn on 67° turn off 60° 1st fan: slow, 2nd fan: high
    4) turn on 75° turn off 67° 1st fan: high, 2nd fan: high

it has been 22 minuten searching for artifacts in ATI TOOL stressing GPU, and it reached 67° then the fan speeds up and goes back to 60°

Is this a good Fan control sheme?

So no luck for me, do you know where could I find the right Bios for my Video Card? Or if I could use Nibitor or any other Bios modding tool to make my own custom BIOS ??

    Hello again.

I'm still looking for an external monitor (1280*1024) that I can hook to my Inspiron 9400, but meanwhile I'll post another 3Dmark06 score at a resolution of 1440*900. This was reached when OC'd at 600/1200 1.24V. After playing games temp reached a max of 78C with 2nd fan spinning at low speed.

I'll be posting my next score when I acquire that external monitor.

The problem is not the 7900GS, its that the Coolbits reg hack, is for Regular Desktop Forceware, remember that the GeForce Go Series uses different Forceware Drivers, then the non Go, Regular GeForce series...

You can still overclock your video card, using "RivaTuner" ;)

--So nobody knows where could I find modded BIOS for my Toshiba's 7900GS ??

no, as it has been said multiple times in this thread...
Dell LOCKED the 7900GS speeds in the bios, ans there are no ways to change it with software, probably to stop all the newbs from OC...

That's why we have this OC iso, it's basicly a CD with a flash program, and a lot of Bios roms... so you can flash the gpu with the same bios, only with higher clocks ;)

    OT:
I OC to 480/1150 and i ran 3D mark etc, it seemed to be stable, but then i tried ATITool, and within a few second the thing started beeping, so i went to 480/1100, but same effect... then i went back to 450/1100, no beeping in that one ;)...

Does this mean that my 7900GS can only go up to 450/1100 @ 1.0V? Have i done harm to my 7900 if it detected artifacts?
