Well if you guys are concerned about the stock CPU don't be, I've been playing World in Conflict which is supposed to be the most CPU dependent game out, my stock CPU FX played it 1440x900 DX10, very high settings, vsync enabled, 2xAA/2xAF, shadows are the only thing disabled. It averaged 24FPS, the game played flawlessly, not one stutter or slow down whatsoever. My X205-SLI1 doesn't come close to this performance, it runs it 1280x800 medium setting DX9 and still stutters. You do not need to upgrade the CPU it runs games very well! Will post screen shots tomorrow.

Cleaned most of the serious junk out of it. Got a 5354 score in 3dmark this time, but failed both CPU tests (1 FPS throughout the whole test). I'll look into this a bit more, do some more cleaning and get some updated drivers.
Also, the big lag programs seem to have been norton, microsoft defender and maybe google desktop? -
1fps is normal thats all I get, why don't you do a clean Vista install, just use the disk that came with your machine super easy, make sure you back up everything first by burning recovery disks through gateway recovery center.
-
Double check the power plan? Make sure its in performance. If it is, better return it and get a new one.
-
Got my FX yesterday.
After cleaning bloat out and following the vista tweak guide in the OS forum, I was able to lower my Vista bloat RAM consumption below 800MB. High but 20% RAM free up, which I will take.
After the cleanup, I did a disk Defrag and other cleanup routines and ran 3dMarks Bench at stock. 7010marks
Not Bad.. I then placed on the 169.28 driver from LT2G. Lowered my marks by 100. Pherhaps there was some HDD action going on I think. But I wasnt concerned since these drivers are said to make game play a little more stable and fluid. After doing some Software OCing (Only +40/+40 on the core and memory speed.) I got a 3dMark score of 7106 with the 169.28 driver. The GPU core temp got barely above 60C. I then kicked it up slowly to +100/+100. Again the GPU was very cool after the 40min stability test. Never getting over 62C. Ran 3dMarks again and hit 7314marks. I dont really want to OC more then this but I was curious where others pushed their GPUs to just so I can have a barometer to what the OCing potential of this GPU really is. -
i would take it back.. first one i got was same way.. no matter what i couldn't get about 5900.. took it back exchanged it brought new one home and got 7043 str8 outta the box..

wow is everyone bash Vista just to make them like pros?
Do you know the WEI Memory score is measured by the memory speed NOT memory size? And memory speed is closely related to CPU speed?
With a 1.66 LOW-END merom with a 667MHz FSB what do you expect the score to be? 5.5? 5.9? -
I think Vista is fine so far. The notebook is powerful enough to handle vista.
I still dont have virtual memory enabled and my games run fine.
Havnt crashed yet.
NWN2 and the map editor running at the same time with ram to go around lol.
Not only that, Vista is designed to use more memory. If the game needs more memory and vista is using it that memory gets dumped for the game. Not only that vista looks nice
lol.
I understand y everyone hates it but so far everything is working just fine for me.
So I stuck with it.
In safe mode vista uses 300mb
on a clean install its about 650mb
So Do the math vista needs for itself probably somewhere between 300 and 512mb of ram. So everything else vista is using should get dumped for the game if needed.
WINXP SP2 will use <= 300mb depending on the setup.
Is Vista really all that bad now...? Besides with updates Vista can only improve.
I mean dont get me wrong I'm not saying vista is better its just at the moment your not missing anything not having xp installed.
Time will tell which O.S. is better because this laptop has the hardware to run vista well. But so far everything is fine.

I have both OS installed and I used Vista for a year. As far as I can tell, Vista is far superior than XP in Memory Management. Especially on machines equipped with above 1GB RAM.
Edit: Also, please stop judging an OS with "Available memory" amount. Just stop it. Vista uses all physical memory for caching and buffering for application or system tasks. When an application/game requests more memory, Vista will RELEASE physical memory for the said application/game. This technique is NOT NEW. It's been in Linux for a period of time. -
Exactly, I think thats the misconception most people fall for when judging vista.
I think In order to get an idea of what vista truly needs for itself u have to run in safemode. -
Honestly, I guess people buy 2GB/3GB/4GB of RAM not to use it, but just to see the 347890520345709238754 memory free in XP Task Manager and feel good, and brag about it in teh interwab.

What processes should I get rid of? I am using almost a gb of ram, wow. I did a clean install, but uploaded all the drivers. I installed adobe, avg virus scan, windows live, and AIM. That is it. Somehow I have 65 processes going and .98gb of ram in use. This seems like way to much. Before I installed the drivers after the clean boot, I was running at 600mb of ram. Do the drivers really take up that much ram? I am also using the sidebar. Could that be whats causing the huge ram issue?
Also, my computer scored 6985marks on 3dmark06 after the clean install of vista. This was using the driver that gateway provided in the partition. Would updating to a newer driver increase the marks? -
Thats all pretty normal. I'm using 966mb now.
Like Said in posts above if u need the extra ram vista will dump what its using and give it for the game. -
Update on xp: Still working on the sound drivers, I can get xp to actually detect the HD sound device now, but still can't locate drivers.
-
Really,
do you have any recent benches of games not benches from Jan, 2007? -
I have never seen proof of this theory. I have seen marginal improvements in XP, but never any recent game exhibiting a 30% difference. Maybe right after Vista came out, before nvidia got in gear and got the drivers improved, but not anymore.
N -
I guess people mean a game runs @ 3fps in Vista but can run @ 4fps in XP!!!!!
That's 30% FASTER!1!!!
-
Please take your complaints about OS and memory to another thread because thats not what this one is for.
-
yup of course, but please tell people not to sprout "Vista sucks XP runs 4905834095% faster" post in this thread, too
Please PM me the recent benches if you have any
Or I will consider about NotebookReview's credibility.

If it was price around 1200$ I think I change my mind about getting my my vorsto 1500.

Guys,
Please stay on topic.

Where can i find it at 1200?

Ask your mother for $150. It's worth it.

Good news for Canadians. The P-6831fx is now available at Best Buy Canada at the price of $1399CND and the same typo errors "1280x800" are included.
Hers the link:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodd...=25254&PCName=laptop_gateway&logon=&langid=EN -
It has been availible for over a week now. Most BB were selling at U$ price of $1350. So I and most other people got a deal on it. Unfortunately, its soldout in most stores
-
Well, did a fresh install of vista, did all the driver updates from gateway, all the vista updates and ran the 3dmark bench. Still getting 5461. I'm guessing that I got one of the lemons, so I'll try to return and swap it once I find a store that has one in stock.
Meanwhile, are there any drivers and windows vista tweaks you would recommend? -
These freak low scores make me nervous to buy!
-
There are like 500 bestbuy in north america. Perhaps more. 3-5 Laptop to each stores. Most probably sold out. So to say about 1500-2000 units sold would be a good guestimate. 2 guys so far said they got low scores, so we can do defective number multiply that by 10 so for the sake of the auguement. So 1% defective unit out of 2000 units I think its pretty high, but its so cheap and return policy to Bestbuy on defective items is good, so what the hey, you can't buy this good 17" gaming laptop at this price right now.
-
I am willing to sell mine to any of you missed out at the same price as BB + 100 service charge. PM me.
It's brand new, of course. Only got it for few days to test, and no slow down or dead pixel. -
Dude, why don't you just return it if you don't like it. 14 days no BS policy is pretty good compared to US.
-
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Because he could make $100...
-
Of the 5 nearest me, 4 of them had the laptop in stock according to BB's site. The one I went to had 2 left after I purchased mine. What's weird is, the person working there didn't even know where to get it from, so the manager got it for me. There was no display where I went, so we had to search it up online and get a SKU. For some reason, the model number would not bring up the inventory, only the SKU. Just a little extra something for anybody who hasn't purchased it yet.
-
But then he should put it up on eBay where he probably could make $1000
-
Anybody who owns a 6831FX, a couple of questions:
1) Whats your CPU and GPU idle temps?
2) If you have a breakdown of the 3dmark score into the 3 parts, what are they?
Thanks,
N -
Idle Temp - high performance setting :
CPU 40C
GPU 50C (40C at power saving)
Load Temp
CPU 55C
GPU 65C -
Thanks - I knew I had seen those 3dmark scores somewhere but couldn't find them. Which CPU are those temps with?

Stock 8800m GTS w/T5450. Running with Everst Ultimate latest version with 8800GT patch(if that does anything with 8800m GTS). FX has an amazing cooling design and efficiency. Does amazing job cooling compared to an Acer 5920 for example which ran 55 CPU/60 GPU on idle
-
Are you plugged in when you run 3dmark06 if not try it.Mine was also low in the 5000s.I get 7000 when plugged in
sorry for spelling
-
What is the best driver for the 8800gts? I've seen many people running the default, some with the 169.xxx, and then a 167.xxx. Which one is the best for gaming?
-
167.58 is the newest driver out now. I would recommend that one or 169.28
-
cpu is low 40c
gpu is 42c
This is with the laptop elevated on my crysis cd box and two pieces of foam lol. I noticed the other day with the laptop on my lap and on battery, gpu was at 38c, the fan was not blocked. -
Throw in a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 1680x1050 matte screen, and Windows XP option for $100 more and I'm sold.
-
Another question. When I did a clean install I accidentally clicked the "click any key button" and have 2 windows.old files. Windows.old and Windows0001.old. I've been trying to delete the 0001 file, but it keeps on telling me I don't have permission. I am on the administrator account. How can I get rid of that?
-
This laptop is so crazy, you can put a penryn you say? Add $350 and stick a 9300 in it!
Is it available in Canada yet?
hdawkg06, dunno but next you clean install, you should format the drive before.
EDIT: Bestbuy Canada has it for $1399 with a 1280x800 screen though. Can anyone confirm it supports the Penryn? We could put in a $350 T9300. -
its a typo....its actually 1440x900....and yes it has the P mother board so it will support penryn.
-
C2D Extreme, 1680x1050 FX version coming out end of the month for $3k I believe.
-
so they DO have them in Canada now....went and had at look at one today....very sturdy, looks very cool..not flismy or cheap at all.
$1400 like jcms said above, throw in a penryn and you have a cheap hell of a laptop -
Is there an internal mini-express card slot in FX? Can we install 1gb Intel Turbo Memory?
-
The turbo memory is only usefull if you plan on only having 1GB of system RAM.
My friend is gonna get it soon. Too bad that there is no best buy at Quebec City yet and that futureshop doesn't carry it.
