Hmmm that would make sense if the laptop was in a power saving mode. I wonder if that was the case for other people's rigs?

The test is not right because they did 1 of two things....#1 ran it on battery with powersaver or #2 didn't have proper drivers installed. Both have shown to cut performance in half. Um and there could be a #3 they only are paid to promote the m1730, dells dud for a gaming laptop.

No kidding we should all contact these guys till they correct it, pretty messed up!!! http://laptopmag.com/Contacts/ It is nice to see my low priced Bestbuy with an easy CPU upgrade will outscore the $3800 DEll XPS M1730 by 400-500 pts in 3DMark06, and I'll only have spent about $1600 with CPU, now thats a bargain!!!

I haven't seen many people mention gaming on an external display. Does anyone have an LCD capable of 1920x1200 and can test CoD4 with it? I'm curious what the highest playable settings are. I'm thinking about snagging one of these at Best Buy when they open.

Well for anybody wondering....I just hooked it up to my 50" plasma tv with the HDMI cable and it is PERFECT :) It looks better than it did on the laptop....I am just blown away....There seems to be no drop in performance

The screen res is (1360 by 768) which is what the tv is and I ran 3dmark 06 pro version if that matters and the score was 6700--(thats out of the box with no fine tuning) and it was a joy to watch the 3dmark 06 program run on 50 " lol

hi, I'm planning to buy this notebook, but however I'm not in US so im gonna let some1 there buy it for me, is there any way to run a simple test that this beast is working properly? because it will be a problem if im test it here and there's some defects(something like 5000score on 3dmark06!!). something like 3dmark06 would be hard for my friend there to test since its 580MB!,

That's not right. It is $1299.99 to get the laptop, game, and geeksquad driver updates. $1249.99 is just the price of the laptop.

I also just called BB and they told me they could not do the price match online or over the phone. This sucks because it's about 125miles round trip to the nearest BB. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take 2hours out of the day, but it is looking like I might have too.

Not sure if I got a little lucky (it was within the 14 day refund period though)...but my local bestbuy gave me the price adjustment from the new $1249.99 deal + the $49.99 game...and then let me return the game for credit back on my credit card...final total with the sales tax of about $100 was about $1300...pretty satisfied overall as I usually do not shop there...

Just got back from BB received $107.65 back, and they gave me the free game, I didn't ask or mention the game whatsoever, the girl just said " go pick out a game $49.99 or less" sweet I love Bestbuy! Well I already have all the latest games so it was between Rainbow Six vegas or Timeshift, never had good experience with Ubisoft so picked Timeshift. I was 1 day over the 14 day limit, they never mentioned it.

I am seriuosly considering this computer. I have a question regarding the difference in Gaming Performance after upgrading the processor. I see the difference between the 3dmark06 scores before/after upgrading. However, I am even more interested in the real world difference in FPS in games i.e. Crysis, COD4, UT3. Can someone post FPS #'s or screenshots from FRAPS (from these games) from before and after the processor upgrade. For the interest of comparison, please make sure the settings are the same for both runs.
I am having buyers remorse  with my previous purchase. I should have waited for the 8800 series. I am trying to determine if I will feel the need to upgrade the processor right away for DX10 gaming. Thanks for your help! :D

update: Well buying from a store is paying off already, I went in today and they where able to refund 100$. I think I got lucky since the girl didn't know what she was doing. She couldn't get the price match to work for some reason " :p because it was past 14 days, days but I said nothing". So I suggested she run it as a return off the original receipt and then ring up the new one for 1249.99$ :p and it worked lol. So not only do I get the 100$ credit back, but now I have an additional 15 days to return it if I have to.

I know its over 50 pages long now, but FPS numbers are in there. There are also another 30 pages thread in GATEWAY sub-forum.

First hand experience on many games including Crysis and COD4 is that, Crysis runs 35ish on medium on -DX9 enabled. 20ish on high on -DX9 enabled and very jerky on many situations as expected. COD4 plays beatifully at maxed.

You wont really see any big increases unless its a rts game, or maybe crysis. I have world of conflict, so I'll be testing that game once my processor arrives. Shippings been pretty delayed on the penryn cpus' and there very hard to track down right now.

Yes, on all at max settings. Most even with AA 2, 4 or even 8. Played HL2 maxed with AAx8. I think AA16 is meant for ATI and really screws up Nvidia. Regardless, only game I have trouble with is Crysis, like many highend desktop computer with 8800gt/gtx at high or very high settings.

I've really been debating returning my 1720 for this, but is it worth it? i'de have to pay roughly 200-300 more depending on tax...and i'm not really good on cash to throw around that kinda money, but if the laptop is much better I guess I could try.

Its really your call, almost twice the gaming performance is pretty hard to pass up for the laptops price. If $$$ is the big factor the question is how much would you really lose to purchase the laptop?

My free BestBuy game! Timeshift, glad I got this one, looks like a great game, 1440x900 4xA/f Vsync enabled, Highest settings. Its hard to see but there is a 25ft robot smashing through the side of the building shooting everything up. The game looks great, lot better than expected.

    Nice framerates.

Dman7 - I had a Acer 5920 with 8600m GT. Hated it because GPU temp was like 60C idle and rose to 85C on load. Decided to return it while I can a week later. Then got this. Cooling system is amazing. Idle CPU 40C, GPU 50C(40C on power saver) and load CPU 55, GPU 65. Absolute beauty for the price even though in Canada we can't get $100 off. Worth every $1350+taxes I paid. If you can get full refund from dell, you should consider while its on sale for $1250.

Well, I took the plunge. I'm typing this post on my new Gateway laptop. Who would have ever thought I'd be saying that? I'm moving from a top of the line desktop to this. My desktop was a Core 2 Duo @ 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR2, 8800GT. So this is a bit of a step back, but I think the portability and small footprint is worth it. I do most of my gaming on my X360 and PS3 anyways. I'm going to install CoD4 on here and see what my performance is like outputting to my LCD @ 1920x1200. First I gotta get rid of all this Gateway junk and update some drivers.

I have the 1 year warranty so I could always return it, but I run Crysis at 1024x768 on all medium with 30+ fps almost constantly, just don't know if I want to go through the hassle of mailing in my dell, and paying another 300 for this one, is it really that good?

Well, I forgot to transfer my Steam files for CoD4 from my old hard drive before I disconnected it so I'm re-downloading it now. That's going to take quite awhile. I do have two "issues" though.

The first is that Windows wont recognize my external hard drive. It detects it and tries to find the drivers but comes up empty. I tried it on my work laptop with Vista Ultimate and it picked it up just fine as a USB Mass Storage Device. Not sure why Home Premium is having problems with it.

My second issue is that there doesn't seem to be a light for the keyboard. There's a light option for the quick keys, but there doesn't seem to be any way to illuminate the full keyboard. This seems like total mistake to not include (or maybe I'm just a complete idiot and am missing it). My Thinkpad has a light and I use it all the time.

What direction does the airflow on this notebook pull in then port out? Does it pull from the bottom and port out the side? My local Best Buy did not have a demo on the floor. Thanks!

pretty much right under the hinge, so as long as u dont back it into a corner its fine.

Also, sorry, but i dont think i can fan through 50+ pages so ill just ask it outright: Will you be posting comparison benchmarks between the default t5450 and t9300 for crysis?

nah I'm just gonna tell you its better and to have a nice day....joking :D. I do apologize about the delay on my upgrade, there are real constraints right now on getting the t9300, but I will indeed post benchmarks. There is one other person on this thread who might get his hands on a t9300 before me, but I'll leave it up to him to reveal himself. ^_-

It really does look a lot better kind of wishing I bought it now. The clips I saw of the game before made it look just like Fear and so I decided to pass on it since I already have Fear. Bleh now that I remember I own it I should post a benchmark.....

i know this question is to Bwhxeon but to answer your question -

If you are still using stock drivers then yes. download 169.25 (or which ever driver is said to be newer) and then download Ntune to overclock the GPU

you should improve your performance that way

*edit* oh btw - if u don't already know, the only way u can play crysis on high settings is if the resolution is lower than native. if it isn't then you'll have to drop ur settings to medium

For those of you that changed out the CPU I have a two question .

The heat sink obviously cool's the CPU ,, It also cools something else .

What is the "other" thing its cooling ?

Did you change the Thermal Grease on it also?

I did put new Thermal Grease on the T7500 ,, But the other thing I didn't .. It had a large amount of something (white Thermal Grease ? ) on it so I left it alone ..

    Thanks ..

glad to know u took advantage of a good deal

the only regret i have is that i bought it thinking "thank goodness i bought it before the price went up" then to come and see that the price went down by a hundred dollars made me sad because i could have used that extra $100 towards buying either a 2GB ram chip or towards a T7300 processor :(

anyway @ bwhxeon - howz the XP hunt going?

Try -dx9 under crysis shortcut. Gives you 10-15% boost in speed over default dx10.

Crysis in high using -dx9, I get about 25fps and it is playable but still have lag spikes here and there. I get nice frame rate combination of high and med using -dx9.
