Can someone do an update on what is the best way to optimize this laptop? I know clean install, reinstall drivers, then what? There's a lot of pages to read and it would be nice to have one concise post.
-
The best thing for you to do would be to read any OS optimization guide. There have been a few posted for Vista. You can always just do a Google search and find some too. Basically you just want to disable services that you're not using. There really isn't one optimized setup for everyone. I personally like to have a few directories indexed, while other people will turn it off completely.

Ordered mine Friday night every BB in the area was sold out so its being shipped directly to my house. GREAT information on here almost everything that i wondered about was answered also bookmarked a few pages for reference for when i actually get the beast. It was a good time reading through everything hoping to help out more now that I'm in the community. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the thread made my life easier.

Another question...for anyone that has set up a partition for xp can you list where you can find the drivers for everything that you have been able to get to work so far or maybe a step by step guide?
-
teragen - you don't really need a step by step guide on installing drivers do you??
and yes - i would like this list as well please -
whats the Overclocking deal with this laptop? rivatuner or ntune? and is it even safe with this lappy, if it even has proper cooling? and how much should be overclocked if chosen to overclock?
-
While the laptop can handle the heat from a overclock, the adapter that comes with the laptop seems to be specifically designed to support the laptops stock settings and nothing higher. When I tried to overclock it ran great, till my adapter started literally srceaming. When using my m9750's adapter I had no problems at all and when returning to stock settings my fx adapter worked just fine.

I Got the same laptop that you got and i was wondering if you changed anything to get crisis to run dx10 graphics

I did a clean install and loaded updated drivers, please don't quote the original post and it would be appreciated if you edited your post to remove it.

Hey all! Well, I went to BB today and checked out the new Gateway laptop. I was really impressed with the way it looked and felt. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Crysis on it, but oh well. After reading all the reviews on it, I have finally decided to go with that particular model. However, I do have a small concern, and that is the cpu. I know that is upgradeable, but just how easy is it to upgrade the cpu on this thing? I feel like I am better off buying this machine than waiting for the $1,600 model which only has the 2.0 ghz cpu in it. I would like to eventually get the T7500 installed. I am just afraid that I am going to screw something up if I install a new processor. You know, a long time ago, I had a friend install a cpu for me on my desktop, and he ended up frying the cpu! Needless to say, I was really upset. Anyway, great work on the review, bwhxeon! Thanks all!

Being quite the computer geek myself I struggle to think what BB 'does' for 69.99 when they optimize computers (specifically the ad in Sundays paper about the 69.99 package you get, in addition to the game and this beauty of a laptop, all for 1299).
Anyone here work at BB or tried their optimization? Surely it can't more more than reinstalling Vista from bare metal, installing the only video drivers that seem to be worth anything (laptopvideo2go) and perhaps disabling services that are rarely going to be used by gamers. Maybe defragging it with a good 3rd party program (probably across their geeksquad network so as not to install the defragger itself on the laptop and add a bit of blot by uninstalling it).
That's about it. -
Actually seeing some of these posts lately in this thread and the others for this notebook, It wouldn't be a bad idea for alot of these guys to get the BB optimization. The biggest problem I see is the clean install of Vista without creating backup disks, all they have to do is read the supplied manual to find out how to burn disks to save their drivers from the Gateway recovery center, and or save the windows.old file on the supplied disk. Then the updating of the GPU driver, jumping in without reading any how to guides installing a driver their first time. Laptopvideo2go site has plenty of how to guides on their site, and also Chaz has provided how to guides for drivers at the top of this section. Save yourself a lot of trouble and read a little, your Gateway manual and the driver install guides, if not let BestBuy do it for you.
-
While I do agree with you, there will always going be a percentage of users who will jump in without thinking. I, myself have done that many times in the past, even tho I read the forums, made sure I wouldn't.
Regardless, I helped few people with the drivers already. What Gateway should have done is include drivers in that Vista OEM DVD that looks like driver DVD to many people.
The solution really isn't here. Gateway should smarten up and put up all the drivers, including XP. -
Well the dvd does have that for you, when you opt for the clean Vista install it asks if you want to create a file called windows.old, which is an exact copy of your stock factory setup. Once your clean install is completed, every thing you need is in windows.old, drivers, apps, and you can pick anything from your original setup that you like and would like to keep (ex. Intel Matrix storage, Gateway apps etc.) This is how I did the clean install and it was quick, clean and couldn't have been easier. So Gateway supplies you with everything you need and more, how many companies even supply an option to do a clean install. Gateway's got it right, if people would only read a little, the starter guide is only 23 pages!
-
How large is the windows.old file and can you delete it after installing the drivers and software you want out of it?
-
I won't know because I didn't use that route. I botched my first 2 clean installs and there were windows.old1 and windows.old2 etc. I just used Driver DVD I created and worked fine that way. Left the 10gig partition just incase and using it also as swap drive. Working out so far.
-
Windows.old is 20.6GB, and yes you can delete it when your done with it, I saved it to an external hard drive, but if you do this it will not save the drivers to external so burn a driver disk from gateway recovery center for future use.
-
Thanks alot for the quick response!
It does sound like Gateway has done their homework this time. Clean installs are the only way to go.

Just got my new CPU today T9300, install was very easy 10min, quicker if I didn't keep dropping the little screws. I ran 3DMark06 for a score of 8578. WPrime 32m 30.872 1024m 981.485. Pretty nice for a total investment of $1600 +tax, and a free game. Hells ya!!!
-
Awesome! So from what your post indicates -- the t9300 will be reasonably priced... and will add say around 1500 3dmarks (oh those precious precious marks)?
I just picked up a P-6831FX at a local BB this past weekend -- got the thing for the $1,250 price with Crysis for free (without having to pay for any of the geeksquad hubbub -- I ordered online and then selected "pickup at store"). I have been following this thread since page1. Good info -- you guys convinced me.
What would be helpful - I know they have been periodically mentioned -- but if people can keep up with what gpu drivers they are using and how well they are working out. I haven't found any discussions on the P-6831 at laptopvideo2go. -
I'am using the 169.09 right now, have had good luck with it before, I don't think there are any great drivers for the 8800s out yet, but it's a new GPU. If you update windows vista there is a driver update listed I think it might cure the stock drivers strange lack of DX10 support. I had to turn my mouse speed down on my deathadder, the new CPU really sped up UT3.
-
Where did you find a t9300 for sale?
-
Do you have a copy of Crysis? If so, can you run a benchmark on it or just describe the settings and fps you run with the new processor? Thanks in advance!
-
I know in Canada you can get them boxed at frontierPC, who also ships state-side I think. Newegg.com surely has them too.
-
I have Crysis, but I 'll have to install it tomorrow, right now I have UT3, World in conflict, Gears of war and Timeshift installed. If any of you guys want some tests run suggest them. My Windows experience is 5.1 overall now, cpu went from 4.7 to 5.4, memory 4.5 to 5.1, the others are the same.
-
can you explain the steps you took to perform this upgrade, i dont want to make any mistakes when i do this in the near future, and seeing how you successfully accomplished this task, id like to know in detail how you went about it( aside from unscrewing the lid on the back, i think i got that down!)
-
Vista likes your t9300 more than my t7700
. My Windows Experience score is 5.3 and 4.8 for the t7700 and 3gb of 667 ram. The memory score increase is impressive. Looking forward to seeing benchmarks.
-
Wow I thought the scores would be closer, must be the 6mb of L2 cache.

Well once you remove the cover you will see 4 black screws and a larger silver screw to the right end of the copper tubing of the heat sink, loosen these, there will be numbers 1-5 written on the heatsink loosen screws in this order(I left them attached to the top section when removing so they wouldn't drop into the computer) slowly lift the entire heatsink out, its all one piece. You will then see the cpu, there will be a white plastic clip holding down the cpu, rotate the black screw in the middle of the clip counterclockwise, it will slide slightly to the left, releasing the cpu. Lift the cpu up and out with your static strapped hands (HAHA). Also before you remove it note which corner the arrow is located. Lower new cpu with the arrow in the correct position so the pins find their holes. Turn the screw so the plastic strip secures the cpu in place. I then removed the old silver thermal compound from the heatsink and applied new layer to the cpu. Carefully lowed the heatsink back in place and secured the 5 screws and secured the cover. Restart computer let windows do its new found hardware thing and restart. Check device manager to make sure you didn't screw up and enjoy your new CPU!!! Any CPU with socket P will work, including the new Penryn. Rep me baby!!

Just snagged one of these gems yesterday. What a bargain! Thanks to this helpful thread I made the jump.
Wanted to add that there is a fair bit of potential in overclocking this 8800M GTS. I've got mine to 625MHz core and 925MHz memory. Stock 3DMark06 score was 7025, OC'd it's at 7274. -
I bought this laptop a little less than a week ago (and still have to go back to BestBuy to get the $100 for the difference of their current sale), and I've been working on getting Windows XP and Ubuntu GNU/Linux running on it.
Here's my status:
XP: I needed to slipstream a lot of drivers into my installer CD, but everything that I need to work works except audio, please inform me of any updates to this since I truly dislike Vista because I only need Windows to play FEAR and Crysis on, the rest of my games run fine using Wine in Linux.
Ubuntu:
nvidia drivers - working (binary off their site)
wifi - worked out of the box
wired - worked out of the box
bluetooth - shows up, didn't test it
audio - only the headphone jack works, the built-in speakers get nothing
and that's all I tested. -
Has anyone had success intalling vista 64 bit on this gem?
-
Yes, I was able to get Vista 64 on it. Some of the drivers are tricky to find, but they're out there. Big problem (to me) is that I cannot overclock the 8800 on 64 bit like I can on 32 bit
I was just getting ready to post a thread to see if anyone has had any luck with this.

i am trying to install XP on this notebook, but can't seem to get the video drivers from laptopvideo2go to work, can anyone help me out with this, i understand the audio still doesnt work in xp but from what i am reading the video is supposed to work
-
Dever, by the looks of the 3Dmark score the computer achieved it seems that your GPU is being limited by the CPU. Normally, an overclocked of +125core/+125memory would take the benchmark higher than only +200 points. It would be better to take the clocks back down as it won't benefit you with the overclock. Unless of course you upgrade the CPU.
-
link is correct. A small OC on this machine (+40/+40) gives about +140marks while anything over this number gives only marginal returns. Thus why I dont OC at this time. Im waiting to OC this bad boy, once the T9300 becomes more prevelent in the market sphere.
-
Thanks for the advice, I do plan on upgrading the CPU once the Penryns become more available.
-
Hi everyone, just joined the site, but I've been trolling for a few weeks reading the reviews on this laptop. Great info, you all had convinced me that I should buy this, which I did last week. One question though...I reinstalled the drivers and Vista, and all is well, but I was wondering, could anyone supply me with the factory wallpapers (like the one that says "FX"). It seems those are missing from when you create the backup disks and restore.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this forum thread! -
+1 on the wallpapers
Also, if anyone still has their Gateway recovery partition with the original drivers backed up on it, could they please see if they could find the driver for the multimedia keys? Mine aren't working in Vista Ultimate. -
Apparently if you use a Windows Vista edition other than Home Premium,
the application recovery won't work.
I tried to install those media button control apps on my Vista Business through application recovery and the program simply doesn't allow me to choose it. Just driver recovery only. -
Just installed Crysis and out of curiosity, I tried autodetect and it picked all High settings at 1280x800! Going to run some benchmarks.
-
I wonder if there's a way to directly access it if it is on there but just the recovery program doesn't allow you to access it...
-
Dont forget to apply the new patch. It speeds up the game by 10-20%. Also using "-dx9" mode speeds things up another 15% if you are running Vista. Have fun!
-
Hmm I did not have this issue. I just formatted and loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit, no problems using both App and Driver recovery from the GRC DVD. My Media buttons work correctly.
-
I bought the laptop a little over a week ago I think it was, just went back to BestBuy today and got the $100 (+tax) back for it being on sale, and I got the free game, I chose Call of Duty 4 since they didn't have a copy of Unreal 3 in stock. =D
I didn't expect I'd be getting this much great stuff back after buying the laptop. -
I checked the recovery DVD again.
Wierd, now it can work.
But I remember clearly it couldn't work with a fresh installed Vista Business. When I clicked on the application recovery nothing happens and mouse cursor didn't turn into a hand (means it wasn't a link or disabled anyway).
I figured out that you have to install some critical Vista updates/fixes to make the application recovery work. Between now and then the only changes I made to the OS is installed every updates (besides installed many programs).
