I'll try OC more once I AS5ed the GPU.

Gained 1000pts on PCMark05, just by using RAID 0 over non-RAID 0 dual Hitachi 7200rpm HDD's.

like bwhxeon said, i assumed it was the cooling system, but I couldnt be too sure..im going to try 650/ 1000 tomorrow probably

..use nTune and post your logs. IMHO, I'm comfortable up 75C.

Cool, I'll be curious to see how the card does. The one thing that scares me though is we have no clue, until someone takes the laptop apart, as to how good the vid card's ram is cooled. The gpu may be able to handle high overclocks, but if the ram isn't cooled good...POOF.
-
thats what I said...
Or meant if I made no sense -
How much better would dual 320gb WD's ?
Because of the higher density wouldnt that make it better? even though its 5400rpm -
too much poofing! AHHH
-
Just stating that I'm not sure I would push the laptop too far.At least not until someone is brave enough to crack open the shell and see exactly what all is there, for cooling and otherwise. It's better to be safe than laptopless..( no jokes on that one , please ).
I suggest a new strategy R2, let the wookie win. -
Watch out which games you OC...
View attachment Stock Clocks F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate.zip
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate is kicking my thermal butt with stock clocks, yet still runs fine. -
That`s odd, Fear should not be that hardware demanding...unless you use soft shadows and all other options. I would expect crysis to get temps that high, not FPM...
-
I should have clarified more, sorry. I posted OC temps earlier with F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, no problem. Something has been tweaked in Perseus Mandate, the game looks the same but the GPU is WOT.
I just ran another session with 600x850 clocks and now up to 73 degrees, versus 64 with F.E.A.R. Extraction Point. AFAIK all settings the same.
I'm not complaining, my 7900GS will hit 81 if pushed at 480/1150. -
mine hit 67C once during a 3Dmark test, at 650/1000, didnt finish the test but the temps were not high at all. i got 6800 at stock @ 1440x900

Could someone tell me if I should upgrade the 8800m gts drivers? or just keep the ones that came with it?
-
You should update the drivers and you have to update the drivers if you want to use dx10 settings and don't ask which ones to use.....

An update for Linux users: I have the built in speakers working in Ubuntu 8.08 out of the box. (Hardy Heron Alpha 5)
Read this thread for the info on it, the audio codec info is at the bottom of the thread and has been patched in newer kernels.

Where can you got those drivers? They aren't listed on laptopvideo2go.com under Vista 32-bit: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista/1
I'm using 169.09 right now, but I having some performance issues with FEAR vs. FEAR: Perseus Mandate. Perseus Mandate runs ~2-2.2 times faster with the same exact settings.
On C-NET's P-6831FX review I tried using their settings for their benchmark, and they averaged 97FPS, and I averaged ~54 whereas in Perseus Mandate my Average was 108.
I was wondering if it was a driver issue with the original FEAR. -
most likely its a driver issue. I don't update this guide anymore so the most up to date drivers I listed are old now. Try something from the 174.xx series.
-
I did managed to find an install the 167.58 drivers. They did fix the issue in the performance TEST, bringing the average in the original FEAR to 100 with maxed settings, soft shadows off, 4xAF. However when I loaded up a save game the performance seemed significantly worse than the test. I'll give the 174.xx drivers a go after doing some more test runs.
*EDIT* - Ughh this is very frustrating... I've tried 7 or 8 different drivers so far. The 167.xx are the only ones the seem like they WANT to do the right this. However, even with the after 2-3 tests in FEAR the average drops about 50% from the first test... I really don't get what's going on.
The 17x.xx drivers don't really seem to install correctly. When I try to install them using the "have disk" method, it comes back saying "The driver for this device does not support Windows Vista." Even though I downloaded the Vista 32-bit drivers and copied the INF files appropriately. When I just use setup.exe it tells me the drivers are from an unknown author, I choose install anyway, restart, go to NV control panel, and the drivers are the same version they were before the installation of the 17x.xx drivers.
*EDIT 2* - Doing some digging, I've found this: Sure enough, I'm using a Logitech VX Nano mouse.

Hey this is a great post and I have had my system for about 3 weeks and got ut3 with it and I only get about 20 to 28 fps in vehicle ctf but 30 to 40 in normal deathmatch. Just wondering if anyone else got this computer and can tell me if they are getting the same results or tell me what they are getting. By the way the computer is completely stock and I put 169.07 drivers from laptopvideo2go but I can play call of duty 4 on max with very good fps. Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the fps or is it the driver. Almost forgot I also get a small freeze when playing the game. I will play for about 50 good seconds and then it will freeze for about 2 seconds and they the frame rates go back up to normal. If anyone has any ideas that would me much appreciated thanks.

I also own UT3 and with the stock drivers and without a clean install I can manage 45-60 fps with all settings maxed out so I think it might be your driver. Then again I'm not sure if I've played vehicle ctf yet and that could be it. As far as the freezing, my computer will do that too Although it doesn't happen often sometimes while playing it can freeze up for bout 5 secs. I've had this problem before with other games and other laptops and I'm pretty sure its the hard-drive catching up. I would recommend defragging and see how it does then.

Here's a linux update: I have audio working (including the built-in speakers) on Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 6 (8.04) thanks to the 2.6.24-11 kernel, which isn't stable yet but should be soon enough ;D
Everything I've tried has worked so far except the multimedia keys (volume does work though) and the built-in mic. -
Ok... my gateway just crashed on me this morning right before I had to leave for school...
It started up with the startup repair... nothing can be done automatically it says and the problem signature is:

I have 2x250GB 5400RPM RAID-0 setup in my P-6831FX. I never used RAID before, but I thought I heard that RAID-0 improved gaming performance. After doing some research I discovered that the gains are near negligible. Now my question:
Would I see a performance boost in games if I were to pick up a 7200RPM HDD as my primary drive used only for OS/Games? By boost I mean more than 15% in fps. -
Probably not, I only see a benchmark improvement in PCMark05, I gained over 1000pts, gained nothing in 3DMark06. If you work with video or a lot of music it will be a real plus.
-
No boost in FPS, only gains in disk IO, such as load time.
-
I reinstalled vista with the
Gateway system recovery with automatic data backup
It is a blessing... seriously... it backs up all files and then reinstalls vista...
May not be AMAZING but its a giant leap from format and reinstall...
Ive never really had this option...
I save my downloads anyways... so reinstalling drivers etc... wont be a hassle and all programs too...
Hopefully it just includes EVERYTHING in my folder C:\Windows\Users\XXXXXX
So game saves etc... are included
-
Ok, well I guess I'll stick w/ the 500GB Raid-0 then. Thanks. I did have one other question. Is there a way to set the size for system restore? I don't want to disable it completely, but I seem to be losing space still. Is there a way to set it to only create restore points manually?
-
There is guide for Vista on the web at http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html Check out page 31 of the pdf. for the command line that allows you to manually resize your Vista System Restore. Actually, much of the guide is good reading. I learned a few things and I have been using Vista for 6 months. This version is also updated for Vista SP1 as of yesterday.
-
I've read through this whole thread, but I didn't see any FPS or 3DMark scores in regards to the potential performance gains in games by updating drivers. I'm currently using the 167 series but I'm thinking about bumping it up to the 169 series from laptopvideo2go. Is it really that valuable? I've never been big into updating drivers in the past because I never saw much difference in performance.
-
Is the GPU upgradeable on this system too? If so how would that be done? Does the part have to be purchased from gateway?
-
Hey guys.
Question: Is a GPU idle temp of 53-56 C normal on the 6831fx? it goes up ti 80 C during intense gaming.
Please help. -
this may sound very stupid...
I reinstalled vista, fixed everything...
DRIVERS... hehe... nice question eeh? I cant access the Recovery partition... im lost... and I dont have a driver CD etc... -
I can't believe you didn't burn a driver disk after all these posts and threads stating to do so.
You should be able to find the drivers on the Gateway support site.
-
The idle should be under 50C for stock clocks. Mine peaks at 70C during gaming, so yours does run hotter.
-
hehe... yeah... the day I put the last thing I needed on my computer it crashed... and that was the I was supposed to back my entire hdd and burn all necessary CD's etc...
Well at least it created a backup of my entire HDD when reinstalling... so ill just instal steam, quit the updating asap, and just copy paste all the files into it... since its 14gb of data that I dont want to redownload... and usually I just put my folder with my user name in... but this time im putting it all...
and so I got all my ROAMING files... Im clueless on those but I just copied and pasted it into my current one... Opera looks sweet and everything here like before
I got the mass storage drivers, the wifi and im downloading all the other right now -
Cool, how do you like your FX so far?
-
[>.<]
Asides the randomly unexpected failure... AMAZING especially for the price! ($1199)
But... then again, I may be seeing myself buying a T9300, a wacom tablet (not too sure yet because of 16:10 questions), and some software/games
So it will come up to the price of a M570RUU but... at least I have all the stuff for it to run... or else I wouldnt of had any money for stuff for my M570RUU to tear up
And of course... 9800gx2 sli alienware... speed... speed... speed... and uhm did I mention speed?
Laptops have to catch up now... hopefully Nvidia will blow ATI out of the water with DUAL CORE GPU's... not GX2 but TRUE TRUE dual core GPU's... and then we can GX2 Dual core SLI... (Octo core baby) And then make thin cards or mobos that suport 4 GX2 dual core cards.... *cough* 16'O core *cough*
*WEEZE* 32'O core*WEEZE* with Quad Core GPU GX2 SLI *falls* *heart attack*
lol... I seriously expect laptops to catch up fast... DX10 is taking over... faster... so I expect faster high end cards this summer... and if not end of the year... but then im expecting a leap such as 8800m
And so if I ever need POWER... ill go and get myself an FX desktop at BB for like $1000, which is impossible to build a rig from scratch at the price of the desktop -
Hmm.. it used to idle around 49 and maxed around 73 about a week ago..any suggestions as to what's wrong? is this exorbitantly high?
-
I've read through pretty much this entire post and i can't seem find out why people say to burn a driver disc. Couldn't you just format the drive, install vista and then d/l all the drivers again from gateway? Sorry if it's been answered several times, but this treads just so big I can't memorize it all.
-
Several drivers don't reinstall when you do a fresh install of vista, such as your wireless card. If you have another computer with internet access then yes you could just go to gateway and get the drivers, otherwise a system backup is a smart idea.
edit: hard to believe this threads still active
'
-
I have the wireless drivers now its ok, ill download the rest today on my FX.
-
I still haven't opened up my laptop box yet, but when u do a backup of the drivers are you backing it up onto a DVD/CD or onto another hard drive partition? Also is there some software that gateway provides that'll do it for u?
-
Welp, I bought this laptop for the wife and she loves the thing. Pretty nice machine. Thanks for the help guys
-
vista will automatically make a backup called oldsystem. Thing is though if you do another reinstall it will wipe it out.
-
Its all in your manual.
-
I hate to double post the same question, but did anyone have higher 3DMark scores or better performance in games (which?) with updated drivers from LTV2Go? I don't really want to tamper with the drivers if it's not going to be putting out significant gains as I've read many people are having issues with doing just that on this laptop.
-
Well to tell the truth you are not going to see big gains in FPS, and everyone that installs all the latest drivers trying to get a 20fps boost are wissing in the wind. Now what a driver does is help your graphics card keep up with newer more advanced games, and various compatiblity issues Its possible to see a couple of extra FPS, but a driver like 169.09 was released for Crysis and Bioshock among other reasons, and makes the games run properly. Some drivers are released to fix bugs, it is best to read release notes if possible as some drivers have nothing to do with your laptop, I remember one released just to fix a sleep problem on 8800 cards and people were installing them on 8600, 8700 etc. WHY I don't know.
