Just thought I would let everyone know that I upgraded the cpu to a t7500 2.2ghz, and was previously getting in the 7000-7100 range in 3dmark06. after the clean install and the cpu upgrade, I am now getting in the 8100 range. It looks like the ram is the bottleneck now (other than the hdd) and was thinking about upgrading to 3 gigs of pc6400 800mhz to see what effect that might have. I am also interested in seeing how the new penryns perform so somebody go get one and post your findings :)

just got this today.... clean installing as we speak... i'm in love... except for the nerdy "ultimate gaming" sticker on the palm... so far, my only qualm is the weird multimedia keys that are touch-sensitive WANNABEs... but I don't use them anyway... so no hurt.... will post some bench marks later if I get tired from gaming hahahahahaaa, but before that... must install xp also.... now where's that disc.....

Sweet, thats a bigger increase than I thought. I figured the drop in FPS when 5 or so vehicles in UT3 were going at it was because of the 1.66. Lets see some screen shots with FPS. Nice to see we can get to the 8000 range.

Update: xp drivers are now being added to gateways site. The main one so far is
    Bluetooth
The wireless drivers already work. I'll post back once If I see more loaded.
Just got done with a service rep he said these drivers should work for sound. Gonna be a while before I can test since I uninstall ed xp.
    SOUND DRIVERS
also the service rep confirmed that the bios being used do indeed support penryn, just one more thing to put my mind at ease now that I know for sure a penryn will work.

here is a quick screen of a 3dmark I just ran, the score has gone down a bit with the 171.16 drivers, but gameplay in the witcher and crysis have appeared smoother. i think the last 3dmark i ran with the 169 drivers was in the 8110 range maybe. I will take the smoother gameplay over the higher 3dmark score anyday though.

    http://img401.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gatewayfxpm4.jpg

as a note, the windows experience index is at 4.8, the changes were that the cpu went up to 5.1 and the memory went from a 4.3 to a 4.8. I really want to try some pc6400...

Could someone tell me what make and model of hard disks these machines have? Also will a normal off the shelf 2.5" 5400rpm HD work ok in these - there aren't any special adapters needed are there?

There are 3 HDD used by gateway, click the link and then the model for the specs. I do believe a normal 2.5" 5400rpm should work just fine. P-6831's seem to be shipping mostly with Western Digital.

the drive is a 250g Wesstern Digital WD2500BEVS ATA150. any ATA150 drive should work fine, be it 5400rpm or 7200rpm. I wouldnt think that the extra heat from a 7200 drive would make much difference since the thermal qualities of this machine are so nice

    hi guys,

not sure if I am having the same problem as mmcdonald... after a clean install of vista, Windows simply refuses to detect the 8800M GTS... :S I tried installing different versions of 16x.xx but all gave me the

"the nvidia setup proram could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware" error.

please note this is my first time venturing into the world of vista so have I done something irreparably wrong and need to return the unit?

currently, it shows my display adapter as a standard vga graphics adapter.. ??????????

    thanks!

Use your application and driver disk which you probably have not created :(. Or if you didn't delete the 10gig recovery partition that was in front of the harddrive, go into each folder under D:/recovery/i386/app** and find nvidia factory drivers.

If that fails, go to www.laptopvideo2go.com and download the modified ini along with proper drivers to go with it.

For me, after messing around with mod drivers, my 8800m changed to GT. Fix was to install their 167.58 with mod ini, my GTS came back :D

    Good luck!

Got a question for anyone here with the P-16831fx and hope someone can help with this. If I connected the HDMI/VGA cable from the laptop to a second monitor. Can I set this up to act as a second monitor? So the Laptop Monitor will be one screen and the Second Monitor will act as another screen? I plan on using this for work and I generally need to use 2 screens.

    yes you can

the noise went away on its own. I still do think that a bigger power adapter is needed though for a extreme processor, since they use an aditional 10 watts.

Anyone know where I can find the drivers for the media controls? I fell into the same trap a few other people did and reinstalled vista without making a driver dvd. I still have the recovery partition but I cant access anything on there. I think that if possible I may want to just return this thing to factory settings...if I still can. Thanks

    stumpie-
It was very easy. (at work so I am running on my memory) 4 screws for the back plate to come off, 4 screws holding the heatsink onto the motherboard, a twist to get the heatsink free, a twist on the plastic screw securing the CPU in place, a little bit of cleaning with isoproyl to get the gunk off of the heatsink, reapply the artic silver, and the rest in reverse. Took me only about 10 minutes and I was moving excessively careful as to not goof anything up. The most challenging part was to not drop the tiny screws holding the CPU heatsink in place onto the motherboard while I was putting it all back together, and even that is not difficult. Nothing in the BIOS needed changed, everything started up as normal without a hitch and the new CPU was recognized and dealt with without any user input. I have to be a safety geek and suggest that you use an ESD/Grounding strap while doing this, becasue even tiny amounts of static that cannot be felt can still cause serious damage to these components.

As for how it is running, I could not be happier (unless my processor started with a t9xxx). The CPU seems to idle in the 36c-39c range, havent seen it rise above 48c under load. I have played maybe 25 or so combined hours of games since the upgrade with nothing but smooth sailing. my poor desktop will start gathering dust, I fear.

They might give out a bigger adapter with the high end model, also because of the raid configuration.
By the way, where you able to keep the overclock on the GPU with the original adapter or you had to turn back to the first settings?
Also, when the adapter started making noises, did they stop when you go back to original settings?
Sorry for the battery of questions, I just want to know If it is posible to do some overclocking on the notebook without having to change things.

EDIT: Ekko, have you done tests to know how much was the improvement in gaming?

No formal tests so to speak, but the 3dMark score went up close to 1000 points from a ~7100 to ~8100 score. There is a noticeable increase in Crysis and The Witcher.

does the motherboard support the ddr2 800, or will it run it slower ddr2 667. I noticed on the website it said even the ones with the processors at higher clocks still used 667.

If you read the thread, he installed T7500 CPU in his FX.

If you want higher 3dmark06 score, quit all system tray programs (well try to anyway) and run it again. You should score few hundred more. My 3dmark06 score is same as you 6750-6850. Without any background programs running, its 7000ish.

DDR2 667 memory in FX runs at 333mhz (in dual channel 667). CPU FSB is 166mhz. So its running at 2:1 ratio. **EDIT : so DDR2 667 have enought room to run T9300 at same 200mhz CPU FSB to T9700 with 266mhz.**

Doubt upgrading the mem to DDR2 800 will help as it will just throttle down to CPU FSB speed.

Guess only way to find out is to install a faster set.

    peteryorkuca -
When I run cpuz the report is telling me that the FSB is running 199.5, with rated FSB at 798.1. Wouldnt that mean that the FSB would take full advantage of the extra 66mhz of overhead speed that pc6400 would offer? I am by no means a memory expert, so who knows. Attached is a link to the CPUZ screenie, maybe you can stop me from buying 800mhz ram if this idea doesnt work.

DDR2 667 can support upto 333mhz CPU FSB.

So yea, number tells me that upgrading to DDR2 800/PC6400 won't make much difference.

What we need is better BIO to better manage our hardware. So we can tweak our memory for example. Some CPU OCing would be nice too. Because of this factor, we don't know what the motherboard in FX will do when you put PC6400 memory in. Will it read it as such and clock it to 400mhz for example? Will it run faster? Maybe in numbers but don't think you will notice any speed increase. Best way is to try and let us know :)

true...but at lower resolution 8700m SLi would perform better i believe looking back on tests done by Anandtech and others. compatibility is an issue though...the better the game is optimized for sli the better the performance boost.

The Asus G2S-Bx's GPU cant compair to the Gateway's. With the ability to upgrade the CPU of the Gateway, and possible RAID the HD, you get a laptop that will out perform the Asus in every facit for about the same price point (After CPU Upgrade and adding 2nd HD)

Just picked up the new Gateway this weekend... Great system. However I cannot get Crysis to run in DX10 mode. I have added -dx10 after the path to the executable but the game will not startup. Works fine in dx9 mode. Anyone have some ideas where to look? Running the stock video drivers.

With stock drivers, when you install Rivatuner, under the driver list at the bottom, the **DX10 driver isn't there... Guess you just confirmed that stock display drivers don't have DX10.

Go to laptopvideo2go.com and pick up the lastest modified drivers/ini. Becareful with the .ini that don't contain 8800m gts info because you will end up with a 8800m GT instead :(

my hunch though is that its just a patch to help display the proper name of the gpu from

    http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-2585695748.shtml

"Wrong Video Card May be Displayed

    Affected Products: Notebook Computers
    Affected Operating Systems: Windows Vista™

ISSUE: Device Manager and the Welcome Center may display an NVIDIA 8800M GT video card.

RESOLUTION: The video driver has been updated to reflect the correct hardware. Download and install driver D20252-002-001.exe to have the video solution properly labeled."

any benchmarks ran for the machine after the gateway update are appreciated!

It might not be worth it to upgrade anymore, as vista is getting more and more mature.

But SP3 might make the upgrade worth it.
