what do you mean power user....its a flipping OS
-
An OS that takes away all control from the user and does as it pleases is not an OS for power users who actually know what they are doing.Mr Najsman, D2 Ultima, steberg and 2 others like this.
-
And it's users like you who can still use it and be happy.
But before this, what do you use your computer for? how much do you understand about kernels? how much about programming? how much about software development? Routers? firewalls? viruses?
It's hard to even begin to explain where power user needs begin... it's basically control over an OS.
We have less and less control. It just does what it wants with us. And that is what the problem is.
really obvious problems out of the box
Telemtry - direct spying on us, on by default, actually hard to stop.
windows defender - worst thing, wrecks HDD space, wrecks speed, - on by default, hard to stop
UAC - does nothing really. Can be bypassed by some apps, but will always interrupt on important stuff
firewall - don't. in fact, you know what? the policy on this is so broken, that when installing most 3rd party firewalls, and uninstalling them, even after cleaning everything, you still need to reinstall or reset OS for internet to work again
policy on settings - really. we have a new menu of rather backwards settings, that are hard to control, we really needed our way of setting things back.
services - after checking what is running on me. . . . . I just had to tweak that and trim half or more of them to squeeze more performance. It's not even that. It's the fact that some of them, I really feel uncomfortable knowing they just run. I mean, how many connections to external servers should we have on an OS that does nothing. absolutely nothing for all day, but we have a lot of connections transferring data.
windows update - you want to stop it, alter it? the way it's configured by default? why?... just why... We don't even need some of the updates they bring
ram management - it's not very good. i'm not very happy at all.
come on... this should come great out of the box...
It was similar experience with windows 8 versions. I had to take a good 6 hours to tweak it.
Windows 10 takes me 6-8 hours to properly tweak it into what I need, and sometimes the changes are more intricate than what the average user does. Why are they doing this to us?
They even noted that windows 10 will be getting updates to hinder Steam usage... I mean, Steam was the only redeeming thing for windows these days. They do anything bad to it, and there will be a flood of Linux games and Linux ports of games,CaerCadarn, Ethrem, hmscott and 4 others like this. -

I honestly wouldn't mind moving to Linux. Seven years with OS X and the underlying UNIX has given me fairly enough experience with Bash. Now I just need to find a distro that isn't as bloated as Ubuntu.steberg, Ethrem, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -

I just wish they will make all the great games run on linux too.
I'm doing my part and making my games run by default in every OS out there. Would not want to be the fellow who is blocked on an OS, so I'm aiming to have everyone enjoy the games.
I don't know what yo say about that to be honest... but those windows guys are imprevisible, nervous, and seem kind of twitchy with their decisions.
How it went through their heads, when releasing windows 8 that dropping start menu is ok, and that including that horrific start page is ok, is out of my reach, so let's take things with a grain of salt both ways.
We;re talking about the people who are trying to copy MAC, which they managed to beat. I mean, it's really not easy to foretell what they'll do.
But if they break steam in any way, it's on them. over 60% of PC users use it to play games. on steam. I hope they don't plan on implementing more windows store thingy... It was really awful last time. Almost as bad as Ubuntu and MAC stores were, only even more colored and even less functional. [I don't dislike Ubuntu store as is, but after using it, the problem is never that simple, we don't always just open that store and we're done, it's just... more complicated almost every time, so it has less purpose than we think at first]jaybee83, JAY8387, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

As a gamer and regular pc users all versions of windows (since 3.11) have been fine. The minority of pc power users may find it a bit of pita but, hey, sucks to be the minority.Georgel and Ionising_Radiation like this. -

According to @Mortis and @mongon, August 3rd 2016 for the Asus Pascal mobile launch
My prediction is nothing will happen, just the same as every other "prediction" since January 2016, nada, zippo, bupkis.Mr Najsman, Prototime, TBoneSan and 1 other person like this. -
Half of the rumours still say that it'll launch at Gamescom - so I wouldn't be too surprised if nothing happened.

You do see the question mark of my post. I have no idea it is true or not.

Well I find it difficult that Sager etc will have so many models discontinued, especially since some of them are the expensive and high selling ones so my guess would be next week..
Oh @Meaker btw where are the hints you were promising last week?
Sent from my LG-H850 using Tapatalk -
NP, it's all a guess. It's my guess that not even @Mortis 's friend knows for sure.
Who knows the reason for the timing. It could be many things, including build kit parts running out needing reorder in quantity that tipped production into a standstill.
The P870 could be a long time off the books before it is back on. The other models recently discontinued have been off the books even longer already.
Or, they might all be announced this week

One I can say is that MSI has some posts at weibo (Chinese version of Twitter) saying there will be a release conference at 8/16.

If you want to really help by passing on information that you think we want to hear, take the time to prepare links and quotes, and translations to English if necessary to make those disclosures helpful.
Giving us a general link that doesn't even land on 1 piece of pertinent info is not helpful.
Giving us a link to information on a foreign site we know nothing about requiring registration is impossible. We aren't going to do it.
Please, find the quotes you are remembering and quote them - translate yourself as you read them to English, along with a link.
If we translate with Google Translate, the quote's may come out differently, saying not what you intended or translated as you did yourself.Georgel likes this. -

You're going to tell me and all power users / IT admin / game devs that we don't matter?
You don't understand the main problem here. You got them spying on you, breaking and grinding your hardware, breaking everything that we have dear. IT's supposed to be an OS, something WE control, not something THEY control for us.
It all defeats the purpose of OS. It's supposed to be just the environment and let us do what we want / need to do. At this rate, it's just a tool to control our lives without us having a word in it.
Power users will always find a way, we're just being slowed down. You should be the ones afraid, the majority. I know how to modify my OS, how to do it down to kernel level. But you don't. You're stuck with them doing whatever they want to you... And it's just... sad.Ethrem, sirana, Ionising_Radiation and 1 other person like this. -

In a nutshell, yes. Are you going to stop using windows?
As I user I (or anyone I know, including IT industry people) have zero experience of windows breaking hardware. And they only spy in the way google et al do, to market/advertise to us. I have option to choose how I respond to that.
How does it control you, if in 6-8 hours you can make it as you require it? (A terrible analogy, to make my car as I require it took weeks of tuning and track runs).
What does a law abiding citizen with free choice have to be afraid of?
Anyway, this is way off the topic of pascal, no? -
Actually Google translate via Chrome browser worked fine.
If you didn't have a link to the info, you never read it on that site, why would you give us that link?
Do you have a link to the info you read?
I'm leaving the link you gave in my response, someone may be able to carry the thought further if they have an account, and an interest in doing the research.

me and us >>>>>>>>>>>all power users -
But then again, I never get angry.
When something strikes a nerve, I just post images that reflect why I make the choices I make in general.
And this is how it feels when thinking of how Pascal will look in a few years, and it's pricing, and then I start to question myself:
And for the rest of fun that I want to share:
And before telling me how good it is to be a normal user and how power users are not relevant, let's make a bet: all power users are going to get this joke. While only a few under powered users will.
Point and moral. We can't truly escape windows, but we can rant and complain until they change for the better. Better for everyone. If you don't know and don't understand, don't contradict. You're just making things worse for your own self.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 31, 2016Mr Najsman, SAiLO, Ashtrix and 7 others like this. -
Except this thread is about nvidia pascal. Did you not stop and ask yourself if it were relevant?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Is it relevant how we use the Pascal card or how much we can enjoy it? If yes, then yes, the OS is relevant to the equation.
Is it relevant if drivers break and we can't use it due to OS ?
Is it relevant if Steam, the main market that we use for our games, and with our Pascal cards works?
Is it relevant that we're talking about laptop OSes that should be secured?
Everything is relevant if we open our mind, it's not just the GPU, it's about everything else too. Plus, we're not having any new info so far, keeping the ball rolling can be fun
If you're happy with everything, it's fine, let those of us who see the problems speak our minds, like this the direction things take, again, might be right one for everybody. Why oppose change for the better? I'm not windows hater in general, but some changes are not for the better, let's tell them what we don't like, our words might matter.
On the GPU side of the problem, I think that all laptops with Maxwell going out means we should be seeing Pascal really soon. I actually thought we already should had seen Pascal laptops coming. Someone who works in the field told me without any NDA that around autumn we will be seeing refresh versions for all laptops and for GPUs, but he did not have a date either, this can mean anywhere from August to late November. -

I have them, its a standard slot. Just the card shape is weird.

And you know, I have no problem with anything in this list for 8.1 at all. A fresh install of it, all I really need to do with regards to everything just listed is install Start 8 and knock UAC down one notch (so it won't dim the desktop). I mean, I have a *LOT* more tweaking I do... but that's tweaking I would do for any other OS, so I can't count it. I will add to this list though:
I have to edit the multi-monitor escape speed setting so that I don't need to ram my mouse at the edge of my screen to get it onto the next screen (start 8 fixes this, however when you open the metro screen or any metro app it breaks unless you run the registry tweak in addition to Start 8).
Much less time than 6 hours if considering "tweaking" alone. Much more time if considering installing everything too. W10 however appears to be a different story as you say... and the reason as you know is because they want control.
I'll tell you one thing: there will be no such "flood" of Linux games if anything happens to steam. Because nobody CARES to put in such effort. And AMD's drivers are garbage too for OpenGL. Actually for most everything performance-wise. The vast majority of purchased games' devs do NOT care about the PC market. AT ALL. Indie devs might quicker do it, but... they simply don't sell nearly enough titles to make any sort of substantial clout to the industry. And most people simply don't buy a lot of indie titles. They'll quicker buy the broken, crappy, unoptimized Ubicrap titles than something like Terraria or Binding of Isaac or 7 Days to Die or Sol Survivor or NEO Scavenger or anything like that. They certainly won't really care to jump to Linux where those titles don't exist (and if they do, get unplayable performance with AMD) because "something" happened to steam.
And lastly, I'm sorry to burst this bubble, but the vast majority of PC gamers really don't use steam. League of Legends, Blizzard titles (WoW, Hearthstone, HOTS, Diablo 3 and now Overwatch), stuff from Nexon like MapleStory, stuff from PWE like Perfect World International, other MMOs like TERA, EA games like Battlefield 4, or simply even flat out pirates? They in total make up the bulk of people actually playing. I can easily find a lot of steam users online, but the casuals? It's usually console and MMOs/MOBAs for PC, neither of which utilize Steam in any capacity. It's what I've seen talking to "gamers" in my country at various conventions over the years. It's what I've discovered over my last seven years using twitch.tv and talking to chatters. The MAJORITY of people calling themselves gamers will be happy to claim they game on PC, but they won't even own a steam account.
Believe me, while steam is a veritable giant in the industry, constantly growing bigger and bigger (which I am actually bittersweet about, considering that I like the growth but dislike that the percentage of new people who are of the "12 year old mic spammer f***ed your mother last night" caliber is rather high), even experiencing explosive growth over the last few years going from about 5-6M concurrent to 11.5M concurrent (checked while typing this)? It doesn't come close to the majority of the number of people who actually do a decent amount of PC gaming. If you want there to be an actual flood of gamers going to linux, you're going to want Battlenet, Origin, Uplay (yes, even this disgusting piece of crap that's so bad that I didn't bother getting FREE GAMES because they had to be redeemed and played through this, multiple times), Nexon/PWE/other-similar-companies AND Steam to all get broken. THEN developers will collectively tell Micro$haft to... as they say in my country... "haul yuh ass", because it means the whole PC gaming population will be affected. If you want the giant to get overthrown, it needs to piss off everyone smaller than it at the same time, or there won't be enough teamwork. Otherwise it's a simple case of this old poem:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
If they pick off everyone one by one it's going to end up like that. Because this is everywhere in the industry, both tech and gaming. NOBODY makes a single complaint and is happy to point and laugh at everyone else until something DIRECTLY happens to them, then they get pointed at and laughed at. If Steam gets screwed and Blizzard still makes their money, and EA still makes their money, and Ubicrap still makes their money, and Nexon and PWE make their money, then why would they care? They all have their own platforms and outlets and are not dependent on steam for $$ in any way (though Ubicrap and Nexon still use it as a market front).
So what do I hope? Either Micro$haft leaves everything alone, or they hit everything at once and get put in their place.

I'm sorry but... what? Are you saying Steam == ragekids? Is Steam nothing more to you than Counterstrike (that nobody forces you to play), when it's actually Call of Duty that notoriously consists of ragekids which has nothing to do with Steam as a platform? I agree with most of what you posted, but this part seriously bugs me.

From what has been seen, the mobile 1060 is a 1:1 desktop 1060 with about 7% less clockspeed, so it should on average beat every single mobile card excepting a mobile 980.
