Why are we talking about Titan Xs, GTX 1080s and vapour chambers when the GTX 1060 and 960 are mid-ranged GPUs with ordinary heat sinks and blower fans? Once again - real life performance shows that the 1060 isn't significantly warmer (or even warmer at all) than the 960; plus, it's common knowledge that the Founder's Edition cooler is crap.

You hit the nail on the head there - people at /r/pcmasterrace have this inexplicable anti-notebook stigma, everywhere. 'Notebook? Lol nub I have desktop.'

As for which competes with which, going by the GPU chipset, the 1060 ought to replace the 965M (GP106 over GM206), the 1070 probably replaces the 970M/980M (GM204 over GM204), and the 1080 replaces the 980 notebook.

Can you please roughly share what performance gains we can expect from these successors against their predecessors?

Actual performance varies a lot depending on the shell they are used in (aka Throttle 3.0), but 'stock for stock' a 'properly functional' 1070 (mobile) already surpasses 980 (mobile) levels...
So everyone just chill-lax, sit back and get ready to be happy. :)

Pascal in general has a 1.6x higher clock while the performance seems to be the same at equal clocks.

    1070 has 980ti/ Titan X 1.0 performance ( according to JHH )

The scammer's edition cooler on the 1080 is the Maxwell Titan X's 250W TDP vapor chamber cooler. If you put the 980's cooler on that, it wouldn't even hold stock clocks. You're comparing reference vs reference (which I don't even know how you found a reference 960 bench, especially which looked at the cooler... I spent about 10 minutes just now hunting for one and could not find one) but the COOLERS themselves are different. Just like how the reference 480 and the reference 580 had different coolers. You put a 480 cooler on a 580 and it'll basically catch fire... but they're both "stock" coolers.

Pascal's problem is thermal density, which is high. It will happen on EVERY single card. It's the fault of Pascal's design. If you want to hope that a 1060 is going to be nice and cool like Maxwell cards are, with the rest of cards in the lineup being ridiculously hot? Go right ahead. But there's no base for it.

If they're properly functional, a 1060 will beat a 980M and be closer to a 980. A 1070 will knock 980 out of the water and be closer to a 980Ti. A 1080 will beat Maxwell Titan X.

Whether or not these can be pushed via overclocking? That's up to the power delivery, the laptops, the cooling (oh god the cooling will be most important this time more than any other time in the last few years) and how impressive an exorcism @Prema can perform. If you can, do help out his exorcism costs in any way =D.

As far as I know, Maxwell, clock-for-clock AND MHz-for-MHz, beats Pascal. Not by much, but it does. Pascal's benefit is moar cores and moar MHz, which maxwell generally can't do. But considering max OC'd pascal and max OC'd maxwell, the gap shrinks a decent bit. A 1480MHz 980 for example arrives near 1070's base performance. A 1450MHz 980Ti arrives near base 1080 performance. A 1500MHz maxwell Titan X BEATS base 1080 performance. These are give or take 40-50% overclocks, which Pascal cannot do. Pascal averages 20-30%. So the gap gets smaller max OC vs max OC. But that isn't a very realistic stance considering how few people actually overclock, or how useful such heavy overclocks are in everyday usage. I mean I am certain I could bench this laptop I have pretty bloody high under the right conditions... but it doesn't mean I can sit and game at the clocks I benched at. I'll probably crash after a few minutes. So benching clocks and gaming clocks are two pretty different things.

So basically what you guys are saying is that 1060 mobile should be between 970m and 980m? And will the Gigabyte Aero 14 get the 1060 mobile or will it not be able to handle it? I get what D2 is saying in that it will run very hot, but do you guys think it will be usable? Will it end up below 90C while gaming on the Aero 14?

Don't trust those pics, protopypes shown? If TGP is lower, is there a chance single 330W PSU could handle GTX 1070 SLI in P870DM2? Tnx

If it's using the full chip, the 1060 should beat the 980M even at stock vs stock by about 30%.

Reg. P870DM2 shot: It's not a prototype. You may want to read the post again.
Single AC Adapter is not an 'officially supported configuration' but 'works' for single GPU or mid-end SLI @ stock. They now just have to guarantee the functionality for OC scenarios (as they will be advertised as such), hence they have to say 2xAC minimum...

The thing is that on those pics there was a 15"-er. And if it was not 980M successor (AKA 1070) then the whole DM2 line-up may feature Full cards with power connector which is great) Or, i'm just confusing myself even more, hehe

    it's not even MSI.

Those don't sell in Romania at all. We had 3750$ 980m asus laptops.

Nowdays, they go for 3400$ and down.

Yes, they still sell a 3400$ 980m laptop right now.

And the cheapest model still selling with 980m is 1950$.

    Lol, they're expensive.

If the 1060 is the desktop version. It perform (forgive me for saying this) the same as the desktop 980. Why I say desktop 980 and not mobile 980. Last night I was checking on notebook check the games and fps comparing the 1080, 1070, 1060, 980, 980 mobile (NOT 980m).
The 980 mobile was getting more fps on same settings than the 980 desktop. The 1060 was moreless same as 980 desktop. There was prob on average 5fps difference between both 980s in favour of mobile on ultra and 4K settings. How odd. I won't sniff at 5fps.

So I guess we'll be either getting 1080 single (200W) or similar and 1070 SLI at best.

As much as I really wanted 1080 SLI...

    I think Clevo should try and make a Titan X (P) (200W) board. ;)

dudes... I'm roasting games on a 860m. Feel so betrayed for having bought it at the moment lol, especially for it's price, I wish my laptop would not have been burned before so that I could had made proper research.

In another order of thoughts. By the news we're getting, a single 1070 BGA kiki laptop will beat 980 notebook, but at the same time if that 1070 comes with optimus and other pains, 980 is still better.

oh well, shelving money for 1080 right now :D

I just hope that @Prema magic will be on P870/2 and P870/3 soon, as otherwise they are just laptops... not war or work machines.

As someone who has been wanting to buy a new notebook since 2012, using an HD5650 (till about 2015 where it became a hand-me-down to a nephew), currently using an integrated chip on my MBP, and finally securing the funds to get a laptop during the holiday season... yeah I am very excited for the 1060/1070 options available to me at that time.

Unfortunately seems fairly unlikely that this will happen. At least definitely not in the 0.9" GL502VT chassis, but it might in the 1.2" GL502VY depending on what they can do with the cooling and the amount of throttling they deem acceptable.

If that's the case, do you think it's feasible for manufacturers to create any 14" laptop that could properly cool a 1060? After all, there's not a single 14" laptop right now that supports anything more than a 970M, which I understand is because it's simply not feasible to cool a 980M in a 14" laptop. Maybe they'll have figured out how to cool that by now, but from what you're saying, it doesn't sound too promising.

But then again there are indications that MSI is working on a 14" laptop (GS43VR Phantom Pro) with a 1060 stuck inside. So perhaps there's some hope for us 14 inchers yet... assuming they actually figured out how to properly cool it, anyway.

With premas details saying the 1070 is 102w. How possible do you think it is to get inside a 14" at say 25mm thickness. I think the p640re was about 20mm excluding the feet. Is it possible?

You guys really should not expect to see desktop cards in thin, 13" and 14" laptops. Maybe one or two on the entire market with huge PSU's and horrible battery life for their size, which also struggle to cool. But I do not believe for a second that a Razer or Alienware 13 will have a desktop 1060 or 1070 in it.

There has to be another series of cards to supplement the thinner laptops (e.g. Aorus). I also heard rumors of NEW laptops coming this September.

Aero 14 will never even come close to touching a 1060. That thing overheats a 970M. OVERHEATS. 1060 is so much hotter than a 970M it's a joke.

The 1060 mobile has a lower clockspeed by about 100MHz. It will not be coming close to a 980 anytime soon, unless there's faster mobile 1060s around that we haven't seen yet.

As for why the mobile 980 beats the desktop 980 sometimes, it's pretty much old benches vs newer drivers. There's no physical difference that would affect performance (barring double the vRAM, which doesn't even really count) on the mobile 980 vs the desktop 980. You can assume them the same. Besides, aftermarket 980s which make up the bulk of sold cards are superclocked to no end, unlike Pascal's "superclocked" (I've seen cards with 15MHz extra calling themselves superclocked... lol?)
A single 1070 BGA kiki laptop as long as it doesn't massively throttle, optimus/other pains or no, will always smoke a 980. You'd have to severely limit the power of a 1070 (by 25% or more, give or take) to make it go as "low" as a 980. But still save for your 1080s.

Prema has recently been learning "Greater full potential" as opposed to normal "full potential". He will come through. Good shall happen. We shall rejoice. And by we I mean most of ya'll since I probably will still be broke and unable to buy one.

Can they create a 14" to do it? Sure. There's no reason why they cannot... it'll just be about as thick as a P650RG, give or take, and it'll be a somewhat tight fit. Do people want such a thick 14"? That's the real question here, and I honestly believe extremely few people do. If... if Pascal was even as hot as Kepler. JUST that hot. We could have sufficed I'd say without much extra thickness. But no.

Someone on this forum and someone else who works with selling MSI laptops informed me that MSI revamped their cooling and is 100% prepared for Pascal, however the GS series won't nearly be so thin I'm sure, and nothing beyond a 1060 will work in something designed to be as thin as possible. It's just what it is right now.

That's a good point, I forgot about that link! I do think it's more likely it is a mistake though, since the VT/VY difference is often an oversight, and heck ASUS appears to encourage it given that they even use the same image on both product pages... :p

Edit - Even Notebookcheck made the mistake with the height of the two models! Unless they really are the same height, and the mistake is on ASUS's product page? Also, note that ASUS seems to understate the weight of the machines by at least 10%, as much as 20%... Notebookcheck is good for this, they seem to weigh the machines themselves.

highsky00 - we should definitely see 1060 in the GS, not sure about 1070. The 1060 GSes are still listed here:
    http://coretech.co.za/products.php
(and in fact, they list a GS43 with the 1060 too).

When you say this, are you already referring to the reduced tdp mobile card or literally the desktop variant?

I'm assuming you know something about the mobile, as the 120W desktop 1060 is clearly not what they'll be using in laptops?

Even TDP-reduced, Pascal has an extreme heating issue. The thermal density is huge. Maxwell's thermal density was the opposite. If you're assuming the mobile cards are going to magically be ridiculously cooler, it isn't happening. Just because it's GP106 doesn't mean it's cooler than 970M's GM204. The Aero 14 * OVERHEATS A 970M AT STOCK*... it will not handle a 1060.

Thermal density is half the story. The other half is as I said numerous times - the scientific average. The electricity bill would agree that a given Pascal is indeed the rated TDP, but the cooling wont. Why? Because there's no current technology that's able to extract heat fast enough when a power spike occurs and we all know how many spikes occur in a second, let alone a minute, not mention an hour.

do you think the 1060 will be twice what my 965m is? cause if it is I can justify a purchase

1060 should be faster than a 980m, but slower than a full 980. Use that as a reference to where your 965m currently stands.

Aug 17 gamescom. Hopefully MSI will produce some good variants the following week. Personally im interested in the double fang aorus x7 dt v6 since they said theyve already conquered the heating issue since may testing

Do you have a source that shows how badly the Aero throttles? I'm genuinely just interested, and I never did see a full, thorough review of the Aero.
