I didn't even know it was happening until I looked up safe voltages for the 4790k and found out that it should be able to do 4.8GHz at the voltage the motherboard was pushing! Pushed the multi to 48 and it froze but 47 worked so I put it down to 1.18v and 44. I expect more out of a 350 dollar motherboard...

I have 2 Asus motherboards from 10 and 6 years ago still running strong, both top tier OC enthusiast motherboards for AMD and Intel CPU's.

I know how to tune them too, I don't let them push the CPU voltage higher than necessary except when trying to boot stable the first few times.

Everyone knows to undervolt their CPU below the purposely high voltage value from the factory defaults - it's there to help reduce the potential stumbling blocks to posting the first time with all new parts.

That's not a valid complaint, not tuning your CPU voltage in a motherboard built to OC for enthusiasts, that is an oversight on your own parts' :)

Well I won't dispute that except that it is offered as a feature by Asus for simple non-enthusiast overclocking.

The issue I was referring to was the CPU would be randomly overvolted when not using any of the overclocking features on the board. It was apparently an issue with some of the VRMs they had used.

ASUS was better back in the day, but they are steadily slipping on their qualities.

    I totally believe that.

And I would buy it, if they make something interesting.

But... I cannot carry a laptop with that huge cooler thingy. If I am buying a laptop, it is because I live in 2 places and commute between. I need that portability.

Rather I would buy a mini PC and 2 displays, it should be easier to carry than a 24" laptop + a custom cooler.

Also, regardless of company making it, buying a BGA laptop needs to be out of question at this price point and levels. Only enthusiasts would buy it, why make it BGA then.

Then again, I am 100% sure that it is going to be BGA. 100%. Because I don't see many possibilities of making it water cooled with that custom cooler without being soldered. That could lead to leaks when changing the CPU. And we are back to the problem that it needs to be BGA.

I would buy it even BGA, if the display has 100% adobeRGB coverage.

And, that's why it's high, to keep it running for the non-enthusiast. :)

Just as a tip, you always investigate the thermal and voltage range of the components you are going to install, and compare them to the Manual and Review BIOS screen shots to see what range they have, and what defaults they have, so you can match them up when you do your build.

There was a time you had to play with chicken and egg issues, like the memory voltage default for your motherboard didn't match the minimum requirement for the memory to post 2 or 4 (or 3 or 6) DIMM's. So you had to find a stock spec DIMM you could boot from to edit the BIOS and save the higher voltage so you could swap in the faster memory.

There are many such little details that need to be caught before doing a build.

Rushing in and plugging everything in at once, and then OC'ing the crap out of it and leaving it with those settings for months or years isn't the way to do it.

Your CPU's and motherboards are still working, right? Your temps under load weren't bad, just not as good as they could have been.

Asus, and other MB makers have to take this cavalier attitude toward details into account when coming up with settings defaults, so casual builders have a good experience.

There's nothing wrong with not paying attention to such details, but don't complain about the settings training wheels you one day find in place put there by the MB maker BIOS tuner, when you finally are paying attention.

Asus, did you hear that? Build one for Georgel with a 100% adobeRGB display :)

The concept of docking with a TB3 GPU box is ok, but docking with a water cooler isn't ok?

You aren't going to carry the TB3 GPU box around every day either. :)

The suitcase for the GX700 is meant to use when you want to take the water-cooling dock on the road, and there's a spot in the Case for the laptop too. I think that was pretty cool to come up with and provide.

Just because there aren't wheel around cases for the Razer Stealth + Core makes it cooler??

The GX700 off cooler performs way above the range of the Razer Stealth, and can be carried in a normal backpack.

Of course they are both very different laptops.

The GX700 is a total gaming laptop, and the Razer Stealth is totally not a gaming laptop.

WDK what the new Asus laptop is, what form factor, 17" or 24" or what else it might be, but a 34k Graphics Score is an amazing STOCK laptop score in 3dmark11.

We also don't know what the performance will be off the cooler, but again, it will be many magnitudes of gaming performance ahead of any other dockable laptop.

It's a special configuration that requires special consideration.

Dumping/Jumping on it because it's different isn't helpful.

Spend that same amount of time criticizing something toward wrapping your understanding around it, and it's possibilities, and you could come to a whole different range of reactions.

It's clear GPU's aren't going to get more powerful and use less power, they are going to continue to ramp up power requirements moving forward.

Coming up with alternative cooling to air is going to need to be considered by all enthusiast laptop makers.

Asus once again is at the cutting edge of what we need for gaming.

I did tune the voltage initially, the BIOS overrode my settings and I didn't realize it until the other day. Again, ASUS issue, not user error, and I'm not the only one who has reported it.

All the motherboard manufacturers that push the enthusiast level motherboards go through revisions and updates and sometimes even fail completely.

You shouldn't "trust" any devices upon first release. If you do purchase any complex enthusiast device at release, you can be assured of potential problems and should enjoy sharing the ride with the team that built it and does ongoing support for it.

The "entitlement" issue so prevalent today detracts from the enjoyment many of us get from problem solving with new electronics.

It's kinda like the OC "hobby", but with more jumps and splats, and kicks in the balls   o_O

If you feel you are entitled to have your purchase work perfectly out of the box, then I would recommend waiting until the bugs are worked out before purchasing a device, and *never* purchase cutting edge hardware / software.

I have waited months, even a year after initial release to catch the optimal tuned state and optimal components match up before purchasing some devices.

Not because I feel entitled to a problem free experience, but because I already have so many problem-full experiences in play at any one time that I need to make sure I have some stable stuff I can depend on from day to day. :D

Apparently hoping that the motherboard doesnt auto overvolt CPUs and killing them is "entitled". There is a reason why QA exist. Dont get me wrong, I had ASUS products before and they were great. Just recently I noticing their quality has been dropping and I refuse to support that.

So expect possible GTX 980 performance on a GTX 1065m?

They wont cut it so close like that imo. It might be just 970 performance, but it is possible the desktop x60 part will be competing with polaris 10.

Around 970-980? I would definitely like to see a x60/x65m part having GTX 980 performance.

    That one looks so sweet.

I just need it at 4K to actually program at 4k :(

It is impossible to correctly map a game at 4K using a monitor that is not 4K by default.

    Man, I totally get that.

But I live in 2 cities, and I have to walk one hour then 3 hours by bus to move. I need maximum performance in both places as I work in both. I simply cannot get that thing because of the size of the external cooler.

But I totally respect the initiative of them making a great cutting edge technology laptop. It is just so frustrating that they did not go all the way of making it more portable. And I would not have cared for a 5 inch thick laptop if it would had not needed the external cooler. I mean it, they could just run the water block and water pump under the laptop, make it thick, and create a metal / hard polymer suitcase to carry it. Of course, not with wheels. That cubic shape is a pain to take with you in a bus or when walking. Especially when walking during a rain or through muddy terrain. I can cover a suitcase or laptop bag with my umbrella, but I cannot cover that thing from the mud that lies on the ground, and I cannot place it comfortably when taking the bus.

Though, for a 24" screen, if 4K and 100%adobeRGB, it would be worthy of consideration.

Well, cheers to them for actually pushing the limits and making improvements, I am sure that in the future I would be buying from them, and even if not, there are components that Asus knows how to make, I don't dismiss them as a company.

In any docking situation you would want to have a similar set up in both locations, like I do for work/home - duplicate the monitors, i/o devices, and move the laptop with me - keeping the jewels close to my heart all the time

It would be optimal if Asus can make the dock purchasable independent of the laptop. But, then again, a spare GXXX along with the second dock wouldn't be a bad idea   o_O

It's tough to tell how big the new GXXX is based on what we have been shown, but it doesn't really look like the back of a 24" device.

    1440...

I really need a monitor running at 3840x2160 to map content that is supposed to run at 3840x2160. It is much much better to appreciate how content mapping looks for 4K when working in 4K.

4k with good color reproduction is very expensive.

Would an editing screen at 1440p and a maping screen at 4k work for you?

    No.

QHD is the worst resolution for fixed size content creation and editing. To put it in perspective, content is made at 4k or 8k to run in 4k or 1080p. Generally, all content made to run at 4k is made in a higher resolution, to assure the best results at 4k.

    Now, here comes the problem:
8k if divided by 2 is equal to 4k.
    4k divided by 2 is 1080p.

In every situation, content can be shown using exactly 4 or 8 pixels when resizing.

When using QHD, 1440, conent needs to be sized in a direct multiple, and it is an uncommon resolution among gaming devices, both consoles, android, windows, linux and android, and mac and iOS.

This means that all content would need to be created from start in 1440 to run in it.

I could probably work better with a FHD for color mastering than 1440, because it is a direct sub multiple of 4k, then use a 4k ROG or predator monitor for content mapping. I wanted to avoid an dual monitor setup at all costs since it would mean them running at different resolutions, and I am sure no driver is going to let me off easy for that.

I feel like the press event was a joke on so many levels, it goes to show you what happens when a company begins to develop a monopoly position on the market. Exagerrated claims, websites seemingly paid off or maybe even buying into the hype? Who knows, in any event I really want AMD to come back swinging hard.

That's a great vid, we're really heavy on marketing and low on critique in most areas these days.

    So in a nutshell
1080 stock > last gen at stock by circa 25%
1080 stock = last gen on decent overclock
1080 overclocked - won't be proportionately better than last gen overclocked because of crappy throttling/heat on 1080, proper benchmarking not yet done

God, I hate YouTube videos or any kind of videos related to reviews - just takes an age listening to it or skipping through it trying to hit the good bits, give me a written review any day of the week to absorb the info I want quickly & easily! Haha. I gave you a like, because it probably contains some good info there, just couldn't watch it! This is not a dig at you by the way, just the phenomenon of video reviews!

All good, yeah I'm like that with tutorials. I usually listen to reviews like these on my phone while I'm cooking or something so it doesn't bother me that much. As far as analysis goes, the video is looking in the right places and critical where it needs to be.

I actually kinda like linus guys videos thingies because they add a bit of comedy, as a side for information.

On the other hand, unless the product I research is something I need to know how it feels, (a mouse for example), I get bored fast by video reviews, as I am much more interested in raw performance in the actual task I am going to use the product for.

Well, I really do hope that GTX 1080 aftermarket coolers will be able to keep them temps down, because if it should be able to oc, I don't want to buy liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen to cool it.

They'll fix the throttling issue when the 1180 comes out. :)

On a more serious note, all Hybrid GPU's tend to run below 50C, some in the 20's and 30's. Shouldn't be a problem there.

The sad thing is that the people who need to know the most won't bother "reading" the reviews. They rather take a short video in with lots of graphs and pretty things to look at. This guy manages to do this while not leaving in any fluff at all; pure criticism and comparisons with minimal over-talking. Kudos to him on that.

I FULLY expect this to happen.

Hybrid GPUs don't fix a card's base issue. And it certainly won't fix mobile.

Okay but do they have it in an open test bed in a cold room or do they have it in a case like actual users would have? There's a huge difference. Also I don't trust any tech site that can't get a dB reading. I mean my phone has an app that's actually extremely accurate. 55 sounds way too low for max fan speed on any reference card...

    Agreed.

I wonder how these will perform in SLI with the new bridge. My understanding has been that generally reference card cooling is best for SLI due to other solutions (other than watercooling) throwing too much heat into the case (or right on top of the other card). With these cards throwing so much heat seems like overclocking in SLI would be potentially limited.

If you have the airflow, you can put one with a cooler that blows out into the case on top and use a reference on the bottom without a huge problem but something like two ACX cards would be a bad idea for sure.

It looks like a good bit of hot air is going into the case as well. Considering the temps are taken with the back plate on, these are rather disappointing results.

I really hate YouTube videos because they never get right to the point - tl;dw - don't buy anything until we see Polaris.

Is it so hard to just get to the point? *grr*

But yeah that's basically what I've been saying all along.

no one knows. best guess? probably fall time. looks like big players are still getting ready to release desktop 980 laptops throughout the summer, which means no pascal notebooks for a couple months minimum.

I was just reading this article on WCCFTech, and the GTX 1060's performance looks fairly reassuring - VR requirements are met and exceeded. However, the article clarifies that the 1060 would be using the GP106 GPU, which succeeds the GM106. On the mobile side, the GTX 860/960Ms have GM10 7 chips.

I wonder how likely is it that the GTX 1060M is GP106 and offers a more than 2x performance boost over the 960M, or will it be relegated to have a crippled 128-bit bus and GP107?

id guess the GP106 will rather be found in a 1065M gpu...

A 4th video in the "Building a GTX 1080 Hybrid" series:

1080 Hybrid Experiment Takeaways: Voltage, Power, Temps

    Published on May 21, 2016
This video provides a once-over recap of the primary takeaways from our GTX 1080 Hybrid experiment. This was a three-part series where we tore apart a GTX 1080 and added a liquid cooler to it. It looks like the GTX 1080 Founders Edition is most limited in its overclocking potential, primary a result of a weak VRM and vBIOS voltage limitations. Other limitations discussed herein.

Almost identical issue with the 880M. Seems like every time memory changes in NVIDIA cards, they have issues.

Polaris is rumored be unable to achieve high clock speeds unlike Pascal. At least we don't have to wait much longer.
