Pros:
Cons:
- Higher synthetic benchmark scores
- Leads to epeen enhancement
- Frequent user intervention and troubleshooting
- You will transform into an Nvidia Inspector expert
- Your Google-fu will be over 9000
- Or (1) under cons
- You will pull your hair out in frustration
- Or (2) under pros
- Increased heat and power consumption
- Performance scaling dependent on driver and game/engine support
- Support getting worse due to non AFR-friendly rendering techniques
- Forget about support in non-AAA titles, and even AAA is no guarantee
- Visual fidelity dependent on driver and game/engine support
- Graphical glitches can occur if game is not AFR friendly or driver hacks are being used to increase scaling
- Microstutter
- Requires much higher FPS than single GPU to feel as smooth
- Maximum tangible improvement only 50% over single GPU
- Useful features incompatible with SLI
- AA: Temporal SMAA and MFAA
- G-Sync+DSR
About 15% less than 970

My 980M has better results than Notebookcheck's. Not sure why, but it performs better in all categories.
Maybe it's because they jump on the 980M like white on rice when it first comes out and don't bother with updating and using proper driver support...? But I wouldn't rely too heavily on them for the sake of accuracy. They're probably one of the better sites to turn to, but not perfect.Last edited: Aug 30, 2015 -

That's awesome!
Maybe with Pascal we will finally get steady 60FPS with Witcher 2 (the old game) maxed at 1080p. As I understand it, even 980M SLI still cannot do it. -
I remember being able to hit mid-50's with Hairworks off. Shouldn't be a problem with Pascal.
Doesn't exactly matter at this point. I was comparing the 680M and 980M - both 28nm. -
ahh. here i was lead to beleive that Sli support was getting more common.
i do suppose it opens up my options quite a bit to consider non sli.

It was starting to get really good around 2012-2013, which is when I got my SLI notebook. And then the next-gen consoles arrived and everything came crashing down.
-
damn, maybe the rise of VR gaming may help it along. i have been reading some and apparently the single fast card and gsynch works really well.

Maybe. Or maybe VR will crash and burn again.
-
This is true, though im sure im a tad bit young to have endured that (last attempt was what early 2000's?)

Mid-'90s I think. Nintendo Virtual Boy.
-
Yup, woulda been 2-6 at the time.
though tech has advanced a lot in such time.

Game quality hasn't advanced at nearly the same pace. I enjoy old PC and emulated N64/PSX games from that era more than a lot of modern AAA's.NuclearLizard likes this.

i dont think you will find any argument from me. i have kept my Psx in working order, even gone insofar to hunt a backwards compatable ps3.

Are they rare? Still got mine dusting around. Maybe cash it in, but I'd guess the thermal paste must be dust by now.
-
I've been stockpiling 60GB CECHA01 PS3s for this reason....
-
They're anything but rare, at least here in Japan. PS1, 2, 3's, Dreamcasts etc sell for next to nothing in second hard stores.
But if anything is worth holding on to, it's the backwards compatible PS3 as you mentioned. I still have one in storage in Australia. -
NVIDIA is attending both CES and Computex next year, so we have a time frame to work with now - Jan. 6th through May 31st.
I am going to assume they'll launch GP100 and announce the rest at CES, then eventually launch cards through Computex. It is my belief they are returning to the old launch schedule. For example, the GTX 680 was launched at the end of March, and the GTX 680M was launched after Computex on June 4th.
*This assumption is based on the fact there have been zero legitimate leaks of new cards for 2015. The 990M is still unconfirmed with only one source.Last edited: Sep 1, 2015TomJGX, NuclearLizard and hmscott like this. -
You wouldn't happen to have access to new/sealed CECHA00 (japanese 60GB PS3s) or CECHB00 (japanese 20GB PS3s) would you?
-
That would be good news, it would place it squarely when I want to update. lmao
Though i hope more info comes out soon about them and how they interact with dx9-12.

Interesting feature, I thought it just tells you if they have it back in stock, but I must've been wrong.
-
so any idea what the performance may be on a 1060m gpu? better than 970m or equal too? obviously the x60m series of gpus allow for thinner laptops and cheap prices.
jw because once i get my finances situated i may go the desktop route and then get a 1060m or even 1050m laptop for travel. would there really be that big of a performance bump? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Would be sad if it is 960M rebadge, which is itself rebadge of 860M, no? -
Should be around 50% faster than the 960M.
-
which is closer to what? 970m or 980m?
-
970M 965M
-
sounds good for faster memory, less power and thinner and portable around 1000 dollar laptops
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Well, you can already buy various thin laptops with 965M for around $1,000.
However, I suppose if you wait for Skylake, maybe you can get one with TB3 port - or perhaps these older models will drop even further in price. -
It may actually be a bit better than the 970M, if Pascal rumors are true. I'd say 970M performance is about right, but not exactly 980M.
-
Phase, please don't get a 965
The 970 is so much faster...

i'm in the top few places for a contest that lets you win 2,000 dollars and if i win it, i'm thinking of just building a sick desktop. the 5960x with up to 128gb of ram looks too amazing. plus throwing in a 980 ti and being able to have way more hard drive space would be nice. if i win, i'll probably go that route and hang on to my 880m laptop or sell it down the road. then i'll stay with desktops and get a 1060m with a mid range skylake i7 or kaby lake i7 in a thin laptop for travel.
-
lol im stuck with the 880m right now. id never get the 965m unless it was in sli. i'm saying that the 1060ms should be good performance for 1080p gaming and allow for thin and portable laptops with better battery life.
-
Phase, wow, 1060m... and where are the leaked info's for that?
-
nvidia has released a 760m, 860m, 960m and so on. I'm assuming that months after the big 1080m comes out, they will release a 1060m for cheaper and mid range gaming notebooks. it's just speculation
-
Phase, ah, ok, kinda figured that out, but was surprised you were shooting so low in the range for a future laptop.
I would think a 1065 minimum.
I am holding out for the 1090m SLI

Splintah, congrats on the private digs, nothing like it
But, what are you gonna use from the couch, bed, dining room table, patio, front porch?
That desktop won't have wheels, will it?
Last edited: Sep 5, 2015 -
1080m would play games at 1080p max settings or old games at 4k medium settings. it would just be for going to hotels or vacations, while having a crazy desktop at home would help for extreme gaming and heavy video editing. my sager with the 880m has an hour to hour and a half battery life. it sucks lol.
-
Phase, the 880m is an awesome GPU, but it does use a lot of power and throw a lot of heat.
An 880m still has good performance, should last you well into this time next year, so you can wait for the right new GPU/CPU combo. -
1080p at max settings? Really? My 980M does that already.
You guys have no idea, lol. How about... 144Hz 1080p at max settings? 120+ FPS... Now we're talking.Ethrem likes this. -
Yeah, not even 980M SLI can do 120 FPS maxed out at 1080p in most AAA titles... Of course that's more a lack of optimization than anything else...
-
the battery life was from the cpu alone set in power savings mode. no gpu at all lolhmscott likes this.

Micron is now mass producing HBM2 memory as well. Forgot the link, but a quick Google search will suffice. Apparently Samsung will supply larger chips (48GB+).
Shouldn't be too much longer now. CES in January will be interesting. -
I have been waiting for over a year now for Pascal, lets hope I didn't wait in vain
My 680m is still going strong though!

You'll be impressed. No worries. I am entirely confident in NVIDIA when it comes to Pascal.
They've been milking 28nm for 3-4 years now, and have done some amazing stuff with it... It's time for something big. Pascal will bring about a new era in gaming and compute technology. It will be the first generation to support 4k gaming on single mobile GPU's in laptops at "playable" frame rates, and will allow developers to introduce new graphics engines (e.g. SnowDrop). And we can't forget about the fact that Pascal will also open the door for VR. 2016 and 2017 are going to be great years.
Of course, we also have to consider that NVIDIA will likely "milk" Pascal for a good 2-3 years before Volta is launched in 2019. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a 50% performance gain in 2017, purposefully done to maximize profits for this next generation hardware. -
Here's a new article released by WCCFTech: http://wccftech.com/nvidia-pascal-g...hip-single-chip-card-feature-16-gb-hbm2-vram/
Basically, it just sums up everything we already know. The expected launch is still Q2 2016, most likely at Computex. A few cards are launching a bit earlier.TomJGX, Robbo99999 and deadsmiley like this.
