Whats with all the Windows 10 hate? I find it to be a very stable OS that works very well. It's also super impressive they are giving it away to all Win 7/8 users to try to get everyone using the latest OS. The bigger userbase bolsters security and allows bugs and issues to be fixed quickly
-
forcing people to do something is never a good thing, regardless of what it is. It is an anti-consumerist practice in the most pure regard. Do this because what else are you going to do?
I hate the fact that I am basically forced to use this OS because all the games I play are on it, you have no idea how strongly I want linux to succeed.Last edited by a moderator: May 28, 2016jaybee83, transphasic, triturbo and 2 others like this. -
This new pastel OS is no more stable than the older Win 7/8.1. If you experience instability with previous OS, is it due to something other than the actual OS.
-
It's not about stability or technical acquiesce it's about freedom of choice. I am not in any way a rich man but if I was and there was stock in SteamOS I would buy in. I believe people will ultimately make the right decision, it will take a LONG time but it will eventually happen.
Edit: I am talking literally 20 to 30 years

Sorry. The reply was more intended for @seb87 as he stated that Win 10 was very stable. Win Crap X isn't much more stable than previous 7/8.1. If he experienced stability problems with previous Os, then something more go on.

That's ludicrous. 7, 8.1, and 10 all have different kernels, different drivers, different frameworks... You can't sit there and say that they are all equal because they are not. Windows 8.1 was a problematic mess for me on any machine and I ///hated/// it but 10, especially the latest Insider Preview, gives me no issues. Sorry but each operating system has so many variables that change between versions that what you said about stability can never be true otherwise it would have to be the exact same OS. This is common sense. Different version numbers automatically mean changes to the OS which introduce variables that simply can not all be accounted for across systems.

Sorry if it's a bit off topic but I've been killing time today by fitting a new PSU to my gaming rig in readiness for the 1070 card being released.
I can recommend the Seasonic M12-II Evo 520W power supply, its very quiet indeed and is fully modular allowing you to only connect the cables you actually need.
The specs for the new 1070 car say a 500w power supply so this ones got 20w extra just in case and I've always used Seasonic and never had a problem with them even when very old.
I'm watching the the thread in eager anticipation waiting for real users opinions of the cards as opposed to the manufacturers claims!
June 10th feels like ages away!

Forcing drivers, forcing updates, transmission of personal data, and heck some people even woke up with their PC that updated to Windows 10 on its own. If you think they're giving it away to be nice, you're sorely mistaken. They are trying to force an early EOL for Windows 7 and 8.1. I've already had issues fighting Windows with what drivers I want installed. Point is they are taking away a LOT of control from users. If you're a layman user, no big deal. But if you need/want to tune under the hood you're out of luck. The traditional control panel as we know it is going away too. It will just be simplified basic options you can adjust. Windows 10 is an artificial requirement for DirectX 12 that there is no reason it can't be implemented in Windows 8.1. Basically a PC is no longer going to be a PC. There will be nothing personal about it, but be controlled by what MS wants not what people want from it.hmscott, Ashtrix, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

What's the warranty on that? These days I only buy stuff where the manufacturer is confident enough to offer 5+ years. With a PSU I want that closer to 7-10 given the disastrous knock on a failure entails.
So far found a lot of the EVGA range have 7-10 years as to some Corsair models. Basically the ones made from Japanese rather than Chinese components. -
You asked about my pessimism about 1080m Win 7 drivers. There is no link obviously. I said it because in 2011 (before I discovered gog.com) I couldn't get my old games to run on Win 7 so I did a dual boot with XP. XP more or less worked (wouldn't turn off from menu though) but what made it unworkable was Nvidia drivers. You could not download a driver for 580M + XP. I had to hack the XP desktop driver by entering the mobile device id into the driver installer to 'fool it' into continuing the installation on my 580M. However it was unstable (architecture differences) and in the next release, my little DIY hack didn't work at all. That's why I think this time it could be the same - Win 7 will still get Nvidia desktop drivers for 1080, but not for 1080m. Also because I think OEMs are not allowed to sell 'new' laptop models with Win 7 licences, whereas a desktop user with an existing Win 7 install can legally swap out his gpu and stay on the 'old' OS. So in theory the 'market for Win 7 1080m drivers would be a few dozen Clevo diehards.
Btw you misunderstood my comment about Microsoft 'coming to their senses' with Win 11. I know Win 10 is the Spawn of Satan that's why - with a heavy hart - I am abandoning laptops (that I believe will not have Win 7 support) and going desktop + netbook. I would have loved a 1080m + Vive, but looks unlikely at this point. Unless there is a 'revolt' at some level, but I doubt there'll be enough people who understand what is happening to 'vote with their wallets' in sufficient numbers. Hope I'm wrong!hmscott likes this. -
It's basically becoming a mobile OS. Tiles. Simplified preferences. Automagic updates. I don't want Android on PC. I want a PC OS for PC components. I already fussed with the Android desktop OS and it's a disaster, but for some reason Microsoft feels that's the direction they need to head.Georgel, hmscott, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this.

Its a 5 year warranty and has the 105 degree Japanese capacitors. I had to find one that fitted in my Fractal case and this one was just right. I tried to get a EVGA one as I read a lot of reviews saying how good they were but Amazon didn't have them in stock with the right size.

I see your concerns and they are truly valid. In all honesty though, we are a very small minority. Microsoft is a business like any other that seeks to maximize profit, why would they tailor their product for a minority? In reality, the whole consumer electronics industry is severely dumbing itself down for consumers. Even looking at Android... The Android today (specifically the one released with certain flagship models) is totally different than the android 5-6 years ago. And perhaps that's not a bad thing. If Android would have been as customizable/open ended as it was originally, it wouldn't see the market share it has today. Going back to the Windows platform however, I honestly think a split will occur at some point. A windows X for consumers (essentially what 99% of PC's ship with) that is simple to use and secure. Hopefully, the enthusiast market will be large enough to justify a X Pro version that doesn't just add more features but basically open up the OS for complete manual control. The cost wouldn't be astronomical for Windows as the foundation for the OS would already exist; it would essentially just allow more control to the user.

Praps it needs lower clocks to keep temperatures & power draw in check considering it could have 50% more cores, although the GTX 1080 is only a 180W card, so add 50% (90W) to that and you get 270W, that's not that much power really so you'd think it would be able to handle GTX 1080 clocks especially with aftermarket cooler. -
Lol... whoops. I wouldn't be surprised if we see 1080ti in a few months. Every man and his dog has a 980ti and I don't think too many are u̶p̶g̶r̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶*̶ sidegrading to the 1080.jaybee83, hmscott, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this.

Of course there is a big difference between these Os as you say. But not everyone has had a load of problems such as you. I have also used all three Os, but without significant stability problems. The same ok experience has guaranteed many others. Take for example Nvidia drivers... Some experiencing a load of problems with some drivers, while others have not similar problem at all. Yet the difference in hardware setup is not so big. Even in the same hardware setup the can be a difference..., like Hell and Heaven.

I think that's not going to happen,
First considering the locking down of the main source of attraction towards WinX the DX12, It is a closed one, WDDM2.0 implements nasty tricks locking down everything VSync FPS lock, GSync, SLI and Overlays, now they had issued the update to make use of the fps unlock, GSync and It doesn't add any improvements to the tessellation and rendering pipelines instead just a low level API to remove overhead on low end pc's, the store only exlc B$ *for now* is super trash, the recent push of automatic win10 upgrade is a giant mess. Their windows as a service doesn't show any type of progress related to user perspective, it's not a PC anymore.
Next is the OS stability, If you check the WinX update history, as you can see they continuously fix issues, Why can't they just simply give a proper RTM (not the namesake bug ridden build and users are forced to update ? Add the EVGA PX and Nvidia drivers frying the LCDs on WinX, WTH ? ) since this new model win as a service was introduced alongside the one core rule the OSes functionality and user control have been drastically deteriorated. The LTSB just sits there at the first 10240 build and useless even though it's the best WinX channel, basically it's a dead end. No option to disable updates of drivers is too much, the store /start being used as an advertisement platform is more discouraging. When I see a Win X laptop boot it takes so much time and after every boot up it updates, and avg joe going through next next next based installation will have his /her bandwidth also stolen to deliver updates so much of that telemetry stuff baked in makes it miserable.
TL;DR it's an Abomination and a Genocide of PC, I'm all in for Vulkan to break things and set things right but it needs time.Last edited: May 28, 2016 -

That's rather impressive all things considered. A 1070 might be just what pushes me out of my 780 Ti. I don't plan on going over 1440p and will honestly likely stay with 1080p for now which would make the 1070 perfect for me. The performance gap between the 1070 and 1080 is huge as expected but I don't think the boost is worth paying almost twice as much.
-
The big news for budget shoppers will be starting June 10 when the GTX 1070 models ship for $379.
That will force the price of all the previous generation cards to record low prices.
All the 980/980ti 970/960 previous generation cards priced well over $379 now, won't be able to sustain their pricing for long.
The 980ti/980/970/960 can still play games more than fast enough, even if they can't match the 1080/1070 performance at $379/$599.
The 1080ti release will start another round of price drops for all those that don't sell now to recoup investment, they will provide even better bargains later.Woodking likes this. -
I'd like to see how it handles thermals under extended conditions.
Another thing I'd like to see is if we actually get and improvements in SLI this time round. Profiles aside, Maxwell was horrid and frametimes were crap. I had 980m SLI and 980 SLI and got rid of them both in favor of a single card solution - this is coming from 780 SLI and loving it with Kepler..
I'm betting that since Pascal is basically Maxwell arch. with a die shrink not much will change unless the new bridge interconnect pulls a rabbit from a hat.hmscott likes this. -
It's weird, we hear such stories, people with bad luck with SLI saying they will never touching SLI again, but my SLI experiences have all been good - and others reporting the same - so what's going on?
I have to assume people don't look for SLI games when purchasing, or don't pursue tuning / modding / tweaking options.
There are certainly games that don't benefit, and I don't buy them. Why would I? There are plenty of games out there that do support SLI, why waste time on the ones that don't support SLI?
There are plenty of games that at release or a few driver releases afterwards support SLI just fine.
There is only so much time to game, SLI supporting games keep me busy enough

I know. Just June 10th is the founder edition only release date.
Founder edition is pointless imo. -
No, all editions are open to ship. Same for May 27th. There were alot of Founders Edition models, but lots of non-FE editions announced too. It's up to the companies to deliver product to the channel.
It won't take long for the market to find pricing below the FE set price levels.
The price drops for new/used 980ti/980/970/960 will also add price pressure to reduce the price below FE levels for the 1080/1070, as the last generation cards will be so cheap they will compete with the 1070/1080 sales.Last edited: May 29, 2016 -
Heh? June 27th? You mean May 27th?
First of all, non FE AIB cards are not out yet. Strix is out on June 4th, no idea on EVGA's cards, MSI's non ref arent out yet either.
Trust me, I would know. I been refreshing sites since yesterday to try to find a single non ref card in stock. -
The non-FE cards *can* ship on May 27 / June 10, it's up to the companies to deliver product to the channel.
-
Hey, I am just pointing out a realistic release date instead of the theoretical...
Chances are you will have to wait for at least a week if you want the cheaper cards. However, the 1070 launch is probably not gonna be as hyped as 1080.TBoneSan likes this. -
Yeh you're not wrong. I was such an advocate for SLI once upon a time. Non working profiles bothered me less than the bogus frame times. It was around the time I got a 144hz screen that this became a bad experience for me. Of course I think that exacerbated the situation somewhat but 130 fps in GTA5 in SLI felt like 65 fps in a single GPU but with more input lag.
I've heard a lot of other people also have bad SLI experiences with Maxwell in particular. I've read that the best experience is having cards of similar ASIC so they boost and match each other similarly. Not sure how much stock I put in that though. -
It's all theoretical for us at this point, and whatever we see available will change rapidly as well.
All the cards are going to be constrained by demand for the first few months, I would assume some will be easier than others to get depending on the ability of the company to deliver quantities into the channel.
As soon as the FE boards don't sell in high enough quantities, the companies should reallocate GPU's to their better selling models, improving the availability of better and cheaper models.
GTX 1080 release times - both Founders and non-Founders cards available from 2PM BST at Overclockers UK
http://www.pcgamesn.com/gtx-1080-release-times
"Nvidia's Founders Edition cards will also be available directly from the manufacturer from 2PM BST, and the full range of OEM cards should be ready to pop in your basket at that same time from other retailers. "
I think all the non-FE cards went during the first hours of sale from most retailers, so that's why you aren't seeing any. Everyone was looking to get the non-FE cards.
There sure are a lot of non-FE cards "coming soon" for pre-order...

I track the FPS with the refresh, and vis a versa. If the game can only do 80 fps average, then I set the refresh to 80hz.
If the game can do well over 100 fps consistently then I set the FPS limiter to 101 fps (refresh + 1) and the refresh to 100hz. My last few panels can oc to 100hz, so that's the limit for me.
It may be the mismatch of fps and refresh that's the issue, because I never have tearing or stutter...well occasionally I will get a blip - but it's a rare and surprising event rather than a constant bother.
I would assume G-sync / Fast-sync would/will help with these SLI issues as well. But, I won't know until I try them
It's gonna be a while before SLI 1080(?)'s show up in a laptop to try it out. I'm looking forward to it. -
I'm hoping 1080ti will come sooner rather than later. 1080, 1080ti, 1180, 1180ti. I'd probably jump on a 1080ti if AMD are still sleeping at the wheel.
@hmscott
No, but I'm not talking about screen tearing. I'm talking about Micro stutter small enough to nerf and perceivable gains from having a second GPU up the fps.hmscott likes this. -
It looks like there aren't any GTX 1080 cards of any kind available from retailers? Are there any FE / non-FE 1080's in stock anywhere?

ebay prices have gone nutz, up to $1845, pre-order

Patience is a virtue in these types of cases.. Wait a while and you'll save a lot.. The UK prices are absurd.. £600+ for this? Even the 980 wasn't that expensive at launch.. I expect the prices to come down to £500 by September or even faster if Polaris proves to be 1080 beater or close to it for 400 ish..
