It is completely possible to make a laptop that can stay current with upgrades for 7-8 years.
For me BGA is simply uneconomical and a waste of resources.

5 years.
In 5 years, almost any laptop is bound to fail.
Not a single one resisted more on me, regardless of modularity.
I had the amusing experience of the motherboard burning down with everything LOL. Motherboard, power supply, GPU, LEDs, USB ports, Display, everything died at once XD!
I bought what was on top in mid - late 2009, lasted me faithfully until 2015, when it began to not satisfy my needs anymore, it felt like slow... all major components were running very well, but then I tried to clean the dust, as it was present temps of 100C in CPU. I have no idea what killed it, but in mid 2015, it started with a black screen, never to see the sunlight again. Sold it for 10% of original price to someone who scraps them for every piece imaginable. -

You're a lucky one!
Either this, or you don't push it's limits to max. Maybe a bit of both.
I personally write games, so it's not pushing the limits, but software like video rendering software or photo rendering software for art is not a walk in the park wither
-
Seems line you didn't read my earlier post regarding Z height.
Either way, thermal limitations aside - I'd still rather the ability to upgrade and replace faulty hardware. That can never be a bad thing.
We'd also see some uniformity with production specs and a more ubiquitous after market gpu modding scene for those inclined.Last edited: Jun 28, 2016 -
Sad intel got rid of the verified by intel program notebooks. I still own a compal el80 2007 which is slow as now but you can change pretty much everything on it cpu mxm etc..

My M860TU bought in 2009 still works fine. My friend now uses it as a server, since he's gaming on my old HM bought in 2011, upgraded to a 2960XM and a 7970M.
Only bad thing that has happened is the 6990M died under warranty.
Granted they probably haven't been pushed to the max according to your definition but they've seen their fair share of gaming and still work fine.killkenny1 likes this. -
Those things are really good!
It's just that... After 5 years, I would not care anymore to keep it alive. Like, all electronics age, even if motherboard would be fine, in 5 years the screen would be already doomed, and so would be HDD, battery, GPU would be out dated, CPU probably the same.
The costs to keep an upgradable one alive are 50% of it's buying price, where in 5 years for 50% of that original buying price, you get more performance by buying new.
On the other hand, I do want my modular parts with my whole heart. On a P870, one can easily change display, and every other component, so it defies my last statement. Also, modular ones will have best scores in every possible benchmark, because they're built specially for performance! -

That's a completely different thing from:
Luckily this M60J is still shiny. Sure, a bit of wear and tear here and there, and it isn't very fast by today's standards, though still does what I need it to - run engineering programs and a few games.
I'm actually surprised how it still carries on. All those gaming hours, took it like a champ!
The only things busted in it are battery (probably can hold 10 minutes of juice tops, works nice as oops UPS though
) and wi-fi LED indicator. Everything else works/looks a-okay - CPU/GPU/HDD (still has original in it)/etc. and with added SSD back in it, good for daily use.
I do wish it had a better screen. TN panels suck compared to IPS. Really hard getting back to TN after a year in front of IPS display...
And that's why BGA laptops make sense for some...
Pretty sure you can change a screen on most laptops.
Modular laptops are nice, if you know you will want to upgrade a GPU/CPU, and have money to do so. Obviously access and repairs are easier too.Georgel likes this. -

Maybe you should take more care of your machine (or you just got unlucky), my R4 is 4 years old now, looks and feels just like new. I've seen laptops die in 2 years or earlier just because of users abusing them.
There is no limit to how long a laptop can function aside from it being to slow and it's definitively not 5 years.
I buy and sell a lot of machines and the only one's that really fail withing 5 years are Asus and Acer machines (although even lesser build Acers machines are more reliable than Asus...).jaybee83 likes this. -

Maybe the Dell that failed me was a lemon XD.
It failed after 5 years, while after 4 years components started slowly dying. After 2 years, the SD card reader and CD/DVD were dead. Then slowly, everything died, finishing with motherboard and display.

Whoa!
that's a very good collection.
For open back headphones, you should get either HD600 or HD650 from Sennheiser, or Ultrasone Pro 2900, depending on what you like best from what you have. If you love PM3 and HP50, there aren't any open back headphones with a similar signature. Maybe, Sennheiser HD700 would be, but HD700 has a much stronger treble, might be a bit harsh, compared to the other two.
HD650 are almost sure to impress anyone, if you like a smooth, rich, but with missing treble signature. For HD650, you might need a better amp, depending on expectations, but E17 alone should be powerful enough for them. Fiio X5II sure is, and I remember E17 being somewhat close.
But HD650 has a completely different signature from PM3 or from HP50. HD650 has much much richer mid range, and much much richer bass, while the treble is somewhat similar. Might sound musical, or really colored, depending on music and expectations.
To keep things on thread...
I am quite intricately torn between getting a really sweet deal for a 980m laptop, or waiting for 1080. Having to use a 860m for now, so it;s a 4000 score vs 10.000, where GTX980 has a 13000 score. If 1080m manages a 15000 score, it's unwise to rush now.Ashtrix likes this. -
In the exact same situation. Getting zero work done today as I deliberate over buying a machine now... or just treading water with my 960m until Pascal arrives.
The issue is, realistically, the 980m is enough for 60fps. The only reason I'm considering waiting is so I have better legs for VR, and perhaps better thermals - so a quieter machine.Georgel likes this. -
If circumstances permit, just wait it out unless it's a super good deal. I've got a feeling we're going to get some concrete news soon.

For open backed headphones I'd recommend the AKG K702 (which I have). They're not particularly portable, and they do leak sound (being open backed), so they're more for home use I would say, but the sound quality is very accurate as they are reference headphones, I heard things in the music I listen to that I'd never heard before, also fantastic character to vocals as well as lots of seperation between instruments. I use them with a USB soundcard (Asus Xonar U7), and you probably need an external soundcard like this (which has a headphone amplifier built in) or a headphone amplifier to get the best out of them. Good for gaming as you can easily pick out sound cues for a competitive advantage in multiplier (or single player). -
My gear is so minimal, nothing but a DN1K with V4A (Love them over IE80 & GR07BE, separation, sub bass extension with microdetail is first class with the speed despite being a hybrid they just hit perfect. Too bad they got channel imbalance and repaired not to perfection and added a weird flex, the FLC8S may succeed them), hoping for an E17K later and a good sub bass headphone with expansive soundstage, the HD650 is perfect for my taste of warm and fun signature but the build for the asking price is a bit high, Will research more on Head-Fi later-on when I'm into buying them. Oh yeah trying to resurrect an iPod 5.5G 30G (battery dead, Triple boot-iPodLinux, AppleOS, Rockboxed
trying to get an SSD for it, again time needed).
On the topic buying maxwell is now wasting cash tbh, now that Polaris failed to impress with sub par performance the nGreedia will reign again I'm afraid
.

So it derailed on the audiophile track now eh?
Let me add my share then:
@Kevin
For the HD650 you're definitely benefit the most if you go balanced, those amps/dacs do push them volume wise, but things become loose and congested on complex genres of music. They have the (in)famous sennheiser veil. Look for Schiit stuff. Pretty good and inexpensive as amps/dacs. The HP50/PM3 get a bit "boring" cause of their almost "flat" sound sig. If you need some engament in your music have a look at the Meze 99. Closed back but with a fun factor and enough engament to keep your toe tapping
@Robbo99999
I love that headphone. With the right amping it's sweet
@Ashtrix
I suggest you to try the Dunu D2000J if you're coming from the 1000 model

As for other news, it becomes more and more likely Nvidia will omit the "M" nomenclature in their mobile line-up:
http://videocardz.com/61693/nvidia-planning-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-and-gtx-1060-for-notebooks
This raises concerns though:
1. The article claims the performance of desktop and mobile will be equivalent, while the leaked specs for 1080(M) were significantly lower than that of its desktop counterpart. If the performance is not the same, then naming them identically will confuse things A LOT.
2. If they have indeed the same performance, then shall we expect the pricing like that of notebook 980? Like paying ~$1500 for a mere 1060 laptop? -
If they are dumping the M nomenclature then only having a1050ti and 1060 for notebooks makes sense. Since the actual 1070+ are just tdp constrained. 150W is too high. I don't see them doing this because people will not like not having a 1070+ SOMETHING in their notebook. It kind of breaks the whole marketing angle of high numbers.
This while thing makes no sense. They should just keep the M branding with lower TDP.

980m is not enough for 4k. This is the main concern to wait. But also, getting a 4k laptop means having to deal with scaling bugs, so it's a two sided edge.
As fast as 4k is becoming the new standard, I feel like it would not be in our interest to develop games in FHD right now, as probably there are people who want to play them in 4k, and it's possible to adapt the game to resize from 4k to FHD and still look amazing.
This is what I put my hopes in. But the ones coming... are expected during fall...
K702 is awesome too!
But when I tested, it was helped by more juice, like Fiio E12, or Matrix M-Stage. And K702's bass might not be fully enough for everybody, though they sound very nice!Ashtrix and Robbo99999 like this. -

I've just taken a look at the current pricing for 980M/980 mobile Clevo-based systems here in UK and it looks like £1400-£1500 is the going rate for a decently spec'd i7/980M notebook whilst £1800-£2000 is the going rate for the '980 for mobile' systems with desktop i7 processors.
In light of the recent catastrophic collapse in value of the GBP, do you think £2000 will be enough to buy a 1080M laptop, paired with an i7 CPU and G-SYNC capable display?
Also, do you guys think that it would be better to wait for Kaby Lake to be released by Intel before buying a Pascal based notebook? I haven't seen much excitement concerning the Kaby Lake rumour mill, is there anything notable in Intel's upcoming architecture refresh? -
Yup, while such nomenclature would be more honest this would cause ego-blows ... a bad marketing move:
GTX 960M => GTX 1050 Ti (GTX 960-970)
GTX 970M => GTX 1060 (GTX 970-980)
GTX 980M => GTX 1070 (GTX 980-980 Ti)
GTX 980 => GTX 1080 (GTX 980 Ti+)
Most people would feel like they went down the performance class, even when in reality their performance would go up (which GPU can go in which chassis, based on price class + TDP / power / cooling limits). -
The 980M and 980 were quite different in terms of performance. Didn't cause any issue there. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Also, there will be a mobile 1080, just as there was a mobile 980. And there will also be a 1080M, just as there was a 980M. -

I don't mind a full-on desktop GTX 1060 for notebooks. That means we might actually get mid-range MXM GPUs, and the 1060 would outperform the 860/960M by a significant margin - up to 250-300% as good.
But perhaps I ought to temper my expectations. -

Quality of remaster, or profiteering off old games? No need to worry about profiteering if you already own the game because of free upgrade to remastered version. -

I don't see anything wrong with free remasters. It's the Square Enix philosophy of remaster and charge for the game again I can't stand.
I own all three Bioshock games in Steam so I can't wait to see 1 and 2 remastered. Infinite doesn't really need a remaster, its got quite amazing graphics already. Bioshock came out in 2007, I'd say a remaster would be good. It's quite a bit dated on modern PCs and you can see that from the menu when you launch the game.
On topic I've decided to skip Pascal for now. Now that I've seen AMD and Pascal both, I'll wait to see the GP102 and Vega cards. If Pascal comes out in MXM form that fits my P377SM-A, I might change my mind but that doesn't seem that likely.Cakefish, Ionising_Radiation, Robbo99999 and 6 others like this.
