This is AMD, the same company that made a huge event and lots of teasers for the Tonga GPU, that was maybe 5% faster than the exisiting R9 280. But OMG, you get a Audio engine and XDMA instead. Worth so much more than a new architecture. Not to mention the 256bit bus on Tonga instead of R9 280 384bit bus.
It wouldnt shock me if this time it was just for some product in India lol![]()

They really dropped the ball there, didn't they? hahahaha
I am sure they started banging their heads back at HQ after the combination of maxwell and tonga presentation.
Minimal gains and negligible performance increase for the same price is a no no. Had they priced it less than 270x and in fact replaced that particular card, it would have been a different thing. But they really need to step up their power management!Cloudfire, D2 Ultima and Marecki_clf like this. -
And they have done it again. The whole war tweets and "Do you take the red or green pill" from AMD after Nvidia launched the new cards was about:
Mantle launching in India
R9 285 available in India
Oculus Rift available....in India
Firepro W8100, yeah you guessed it, India
The way they are overcompensating and doing these teasers for these stupid products, its not exactly promising. Looks like they have nothing to counter Maxwell with. Not even the bloody GTX 780M ffs. Which launched in mid 2013.
They have lost itMarecki_clf, TomJGX, heibk201 and 1 other person like this. -
good, that means we can see r9 290x for less than $300 in a few weeks
-
One side of me says the same however the other says this..
AMD doesn't need to counter Maxwell when it comes to desktop urgently.. The R9 290X has plenty of performance however I agree with most people that prices need to go down... The R9 390 should be able to beat Maxwell but we will see about that..
As for mobile, they need to definetly up their game.. The 7970M and its rebrands are obsolete now and once the new Maxwell 970/980M's are out, they will be screwed.. However, remember 970M/980M aren't official yet so AMD has a few weeks or so till then to get something up their sleeve.. otherwise, they will be a fail.. -
In the destkop area, AMD does still deliver a sizeable performance in gaming as well as in OpenCL... but it also draws a lot more power to do those.
Though, many might argue that power consumption in the desktop arena is not a big problem (however, improved efficiency doesn't really hurt).
In the mobile area... I definitely agree that AMD needs to step up their game seriously.
They might have to release gpu's with HBM ahead of schedule as a result (Which is what I'd very much appreciate, seeing how their current mobile lineup is WAY obsolete). -
Tell me, how much time nVIDIA needed to release twice as power-hungry and nowhere near (as the power would suggest) performance wise GTX 480m, compared to Mobility 5870? I didn't heard you crying back then. It was always nVIDIA and nothing else for you. It wont matter what ATi/AMD would release, so stop whining.
(talking to nVIDIA fans, not specific person)
Also I can't get why is this whining all about?! I've installed 7970m in my 8740w last week and I'm currently playing Watch_Dogs @1920x1200@High with no issues. Sure the more, the better, but you are all acting like you bet your homes on it and it's not like you are going to see high res 17" anytime soon.
Whatever AMD comes-up with, I'll be getting it! -
I'd like to point out that the 480M was a GF100 chip. Which was QUICKLY phased out when they found GF104 worked far better via the 470M, and they released the 485M fast as heck so their flagship wouldn't be beaten by their second-from-top card. I don't consider it one of their best moves, but I do consider it a failure of a test more than anything else.
I'm dead certain GM200 will work in mobile form factor now though. It's power efficient and cool enough to be put in a P370SM-A-esque notebook without much cooling problems I reckon. I'd like to see a near-full GM200 chip in a mobile form factor =D
As for your AMD loving, we aren't saying that AMD has a weak card right now. But it isn't anywhere near anything nVidia has been offering since mid 2013 with the 780M. And it's been rebranded twice purposelessly. If AMD releases a new chip on the R9 285 chip for mobile hardware as a new flagship and it gets trounced by the 970M (which it will not be cheaper than, going by past experiences) then they'll have done something entirely pointless. nVidia has better mobile drivers, Optimus is (as far as I know) still preferable to Enduro, the 970M is supposedly a 75W chip which means it'll run cooler and produce less heat than ANYTHING based on their current desktop lineup (which, while cheap, is HOT AND POWER HUNGRY, which are two things that are the bane of laptop cards' existence) and finally, they have a track record of a fairly high failure rate on their recent lineups since the 6990M. It's not to say nobody's card can last long; please do not misunderstand... but if they release a chip like I just described, there is NO REASON AT ALL for anybody buying a notebook to buy one unless they're going to do OpenCL mining or something. Which as far as Cloudfire has found, is something Maxwell is ACTUALLY not terrible at doing.
So if you want to buy AMD by right of it being AMD, go ahead. But even you should realize that sometimes sense needs to be made.
I'd love if AMD could bring out something great. But for anything they bring out to be transferable to mobile lineups, they need to make it draw a lot less power and produce a lot less heat than their desktop counterparts. Unless we get Sapphire to start making Vapor-X cooling laptops?Cloudfire likes this. -
In your dreams, especially if the rumors of GM200 being monolithic (600+ mm^2 on 28nm) turn out to be true.
-
Haha well it is a dream indeed. Even so, I think a full GM204 would be pretty much all we need for quite a while. But I can dream about GM200 on mobile yes =D

My old 7970m mate? Great if it is. The card has gamed for more than 2 years now
-
I don't expect that happening either, unless they make it at 20nm, but it will still be cut down and who knows when it will actually launch.
-
Of course I did. That's why I separated it, so it would be more obvious. I don't know why it's a bad thing though, most nVIDIA fans are indeed fanboys, and I don't see their houses burning.
Well not exactly, I'll love some efficiency love as well, but while there are tons of people who are going to buy whatever nVIDIA releases, it's not so much for AMD. Obviously people need a lot more convincing to go red, than staying green. Of course as of now nVIDIA has great product, indeed, I never said the opposite. I was trying to say that people were buying 480ms even though there was better product in my eyes.
I would love some cooling innovation as well
Actually I did a Vapor-X mod on my beloved Acer
Don't ask how much it costs
As for the failing, there are failing GPUs from each team, so I'll never put this one on the table (anymore, I used to mention it couple of times, back when 8xxxm was failing like there's no tomorrow).
Hopefully it would game some more
I took care about the VRMs and stuff, would do some more refinement though.

Supposedly some rumors have started circulating about AMD's new GPU's.
Here's the source:
Rumors Circulate Surrounding New AMD GPUs - Industry News - Overclockers Club
I wouldn't put too much stock on rumors... however, this does jibe with what I mentioned in one of my replies here that AMD might be forced to release their HBM memory based gpu's faster due to Maxwell.
If the rumors turn out to be accurate, the best we could evidently hope for is February 2015.
This seems a bit late to the party.
Those gpu's should have been ready to be released in at best a month from now...
Though... it does cast a worry as to whether AMD could counter Nvidia from architecture point of view alone (Which Nvidia seems to have been able to improve upon all across the board and reduce power consumption at the same time).
I worry that even releasing HBM could tip the favor over to AMD temporarily... however, what will happen when Nvidia releases its own stacked memory GPU's with an even better architecture?
Mind you, we don't know how capable AMD's upcoming architectures are... but this could push the stacked memory gpu's to release ahead of schedule... in which case, I'd probably opt to wait to see what their capabilities are before 'pulling the trigger' on Maxwell (Which is currently on 28nm).
I can certainly wait for this technology, so that's not the problem (in which case, I might end up waiting for Broadwell to be released as well) , but it would be nice to have more info. -
Here is an older article about that with more details GTX 980 May Lose Performance Crown To R9 380X in Febuary and a newer one Only AMD's Pirate Islands GPUs and Radeon R9 380X Will Debut on the 20nm Node Alleges Report.
R9-380X is supposed to be faster than 980 and the 390X is a complete unknown so nVidia may want to hurry the release of GM200. -
Always said they should have released with GM200, but you know nVidia.

Here's some news on Tonga for desktop:
Report: AMD's Tonga-XT GPU To Have 384-Bit Memory Bus
Specs wise, it seems pretty good, but if previous indications are anything to go on, the power requirements will be too high to fit into a laptop... unless AMD is doing some revisions to Tonga before releasing it to optimize its power consumption. -
AMD will put out a faster card, 5 months later? Impressive feat.
-
Kevin, was that sarcasm or a genuine remark?
To me, 5 months seems a bit too long amount of time (considering how long HBM was in development).
Though... I think there's a possibility that because AMD announced Tonga, they don't want to release new GPU's with HBM and completely invalidate Tonga.
In the desktop space, I can see Tonga holding its own against Maxwell, but at a higher power expenditure (although, as I already stated, its also possible AMD are doing some power optimizations to Tonga). -
Definitely sarcastic.

So now R9 M295X comes with the new iMac 5K starting from $2499! Can't wait till the apple store updates to check the specs and the price)
-
Tech specs are now updated:
Configure - Apple Store (UK)
Configure - Apple Store (U.S.)
Some are pretty mysterious though, like i7/i5 CPU without the model name. -
AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
Configurable to AMD Radeon R9 M295X with 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
True that; I did NOT expect the M295X to turn up at Apple of all places first. -
When selecting 295 on the US build page a small
"This customized Mac takes a bit longer to build. See summary for updated shipping and pickup info."
Pops up. Hopefully it is a new card, and not just 2GB vs 4GB with different names! -
Well I don't think Apple has used the real names for the CPUs in ages, they seem to be 4790K and 4690(K).
There were rumors of that Apple would use AMD GPUs in their new iMacs, but never would I have expected it to become a reality. But it makes some sense as they have AMD GPUs in their desktop pro models also.
But M290X already has a model with 4GB of memory, why would it have a different name? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Does the R9 M295x have two GPUs inside? If so it's really only effectively 2GB VRAM, right? -
I wonder how the hell did they manage to run 5k with a single soldered gpu? It shoukd support not more than 4k displays i guess, no? Anyways, the gpu even if it's a tonga variant will not be as fast as 8gb 980M for sure. Of course, the cost is different as well. 67% more pixels that 4K already on the market, damn...

Dig and you shall find
Two options:
Higher clocked R9 285
Low clocked but with more cores than R9 285
R9 M290X have a computation performance of 2.2 TetaFLOPs.
Most likely its not a MXM card (mobile) but probably use standard power connectors you find in desktops like the iMac with GTX 680MX. But Id love to be wrong -
So when R9 M295X magically disappeared and then the rumors of the 27" iMac being powered by AMD GPU turned up I already had suspicions of it having R9-M295X. It all made perfect sense. First the M295X was supposed to launch by the end of Q3 and MSI already had GX60 models planned and then there was probably a supply issue and it got delayed, and then is appeared to be nonexistent, 27" iMac rumors with AMD GPU supporting 5K resolution surface and now magically Apple puts it in an iMac. AMD probably gave Apple it's entire supply to avoid what happened with Llano (Apple cancelled Macbooks with APUs due to supply issues). Now the question is whether we will see those GX60s with R9-M295X anytime soon.
Edit: Also there were already hints about this in R9 285 slides with AMD claiming Tonga supports 4K and 5K too. I wonder how the heck does R9 290X support 5K too. -
Hopefully there won't be those notebooks anytime soon. Until they release a reasonable CPU. No need to be ultra high end to offer value, but pairing a high end GPU with a low end CPU is a spell for disaster.
-
FX 7600P is a decent APU, there is nothing wrong with it. As long as you max out settings at 1080P it won't be much of a bottleneck with the exception of crap single core and badly optimized games (mostly older ones such as Skyrim).
Don't forget that when it comes to framerates it's the minimums that are important (which the CPU shouldn't have problems with as those are 99% GPU limited) the maximums are pointless as they don't improve anything and create problems when the gap between min and max is too large, such as stuttering, dropped frames, and screen tearing especially on 60Hz panels. Plus there is the added benefit of things feeling much smoother when maximums are closer to average FPS and DX12 once Windows 10 comes out will only make things better.triturbo likes this. -
3.5 Teraflops is a lot and since it says up to it is probably slightly lower and they just rounded it up. Here are my estimates.
2048SPs at 850MHz > 2048 * 2 * 0.85GHz = 3481.6 GigaFlops. Nice find btw.
Most likely it is a full Tonga with cut down memory bus 384bit > 256bit since it is a 4GB card.
It most likely has 2048 cores because lower clocks and more cores are more efficient than less cores with higher clocks thanks to lower voltages.
Like I have said before Tonga is much more efficient at lower clocks.
The 850MHz might as well be a boost clock. -
That's the thing. The 7600P is a decent APU but it is not even mid range performance for gaming. For a lot of games it won't matter. Specially if mantle is embraced even more, and hopefully with DX12. The APU has a TDP of 35w. I'd say they should skip the integrated GPU and focus on delivering a nice 45w higher perfoming CPU on the cheap.
I don't have a GX myself, but a close friend does, and the notebook performs OK to downright unplayable. -
It would be great if we get a 45W option but even still in decently threaded cases the 7600P can match an i7 4600M (even 5750m is 20-30% faster). Of course the 47W quad core i7s are out of reach but there is a big gap in price too. Not sure which GX model your friend has but it's probably the one with A10 4600M. I have a A10 4600M + 7730M combo and I can even play Metro 2033 at 1080P and low - medium settings with relatively smooth performance (only notice lag when I am staring at flames from point blank) but single threaded games such as World of Tanks absolutely tank the performance (used to get 30FPS at medium settings 1080P and after a few game updates it barely stays at 20).
-
Are there even any FX-7600P APUs in the wild? I've seen the demo unit when it was announced and have only found the Kaveri Pro models for sale here in the US.
-
Yes some GX60 5CC models in Germany on e-tailer websites (probably leaked early not sure if they are being sold) and X550ZE on ASUS' Global website, strangely the US one still doesn't have it listed.
-
So do you guys think the m295x will match 970m/980m? or will the m295x stick to appels shiet? :/
-
I'm gonna eat my hat if this becomes a mobile card.
I am extremely sceptical, it needs to be much more efficient than R9 285, but if it is, then eeveryone wins
-
So, we have to blame Apple for this. I read that there's 30% improvement in efficiency over the previous model (partially due to new back-light design). I wonder what part of this is due to the new chip (hopefully a good part
)

Yes, we should blame Apple for everything. They are responsible for world hunger, poverty, and Maxwell being on 28nm instead of 20nm.

Hey all! How is this 980m vs r9 m390x battle goin at the moment?
Some weeks ago everybody was talking about the new big AMD cards but they r still nowhere.
I wanna buy a future proof gaming laptop so i still wait a bit if i can get any better than 980m. Or waiting for "980m on 20nm"... Suggestions?
I also didnt find any new forum for the new amd cards =[
Is the situation really so disappointing? -
- M295X may be only for iMac`s due to high thermal/TDP/power. Thats why we havent seen any leaks from notebooks running the card.
- 20nm GTX 980M not happening.
- Better than GTX 980M (still 28nm and hotter) is probably here in May/June next year.

So thats why the big silence... :/
Then I guess I should pick a notebook with 980m right now, right?
Wont be any new AMD or even never Nvidia in the near future? -
Why are you dissappointed about GTX 980M? Its just as fast as 2x7970M if scaling is there and better if the game scales bad.
If you want the best of heat/power, you should buy GTX 980M and stick with it until Pascal is here. Or sell the card if AMD`s upcoming new architecture is better.
