Hmm, how are the stalker games? I have heard good and bad things about it, I have 50$ to spend on games, and I am interested in getting these games. Can anyone give me a really positive first hand experience with it? Or, if to the contrary, a better use of 50$?
    Thanks!!
    Edgar =)

IMHO Bad Company is a better one, in online, too.

I don't go along with RPG games nor games with a lot of fiction, but I'll sure check out Bioshock and its gameplay. Mount & Blade I saw its gameplay before and I kinda didn't like it.

Thanks, friend. Thanks all for your help.

I can sum up the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series pretty quickly, heh:

    -Pros:
    - Fairly realistic gameplay
    - Awesome enviornment
    - Hits the whole "Post-Apocalyptic" genre perfectly
    - You can mod the hell out of it
    - Cons
    - Notoriously glitchy at release
    - Certain gameplay mechanics can be extremely frustrating. They can be fixed, but require a bit of time digging through mods to get it playing nicely (e.g. the weapon accuracy has been much debated; you can find mods that will improve it drastically).

I suppose the best way to put it is that the vanilla version isn't bad, but the mods are what make the game truly excellent. Bear in mind that I haven't beaten either Shadow of Chernobyl or Clear Sky; in both cases they were games that I played on and off over the course of a few months and then did something stupid with my computer and lost my save games. Ditto for Mass Effect and Borderlands; but that's another story!

In any case, I really like the series and would recommend them to anyone who is interested in a somewhat more in-depth shooter.

I'm playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl right now. Just get Shadow of Chernoyl and see if you like it. Its like less than $10 off Amazon. If you don't like it than you wont like any of the Stalker series games.

I for one love the game and the realistic gameplay. Save often and you should be fine. If you enjoy Run and Gun First Person Shooters than you won't like Stalker as much. Stalker takes time and a bit of strategy because your enemies pretty much have the same health as you and can kill you really fast. I guess that's why I like it so much.

Thank you very much =) I'm heading to college, and video games will be my reprieve from studying and stress, so I want to spend my money as well as I can! If anyone else has any feed back I would appreciate it! I will probably pick it up, and mod the hell out of it XD

I don't know where you're going to school, but it's going to be important to getting the most out of your college that you be social. I definitely looked too much into your post, but if video games are your only planned reprieve, you're going to be underwhelmed with your freshman year.

    Hah, fair enough =)
You did look a bit too much into it! I am going somewhere very, very cold, but I have already signed up for clubs and societies, I have my priorities in order, I promise, I just know that occasionally the impetus to leave a warm and comfortable dorm(I can dream, right?) to venture forth into the tundra will NOT be that appealing, and it is for those days I posted here.

Thank you for your concern, sincerely.

You're a much braver man than I am. My brain picked out the words "dorm" and "tundra" from that post and went into withdrawal. I'll let you know when it thaws.

And to keep this post marginally on-topic, here are a few links for where to find S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mods (note the fact that the main mod on the first link was released only about a year ago; people still love this game to death):

I miss games like diablo II and Dungeon Siege II.. they may be an old games but their gameplay could be considered as the best for me

is it possible to find games like those in this day?
I tried Dragon Age Origin and once I played I simply removed it

You didn't like Dragon Age? hmm..

The first Mass Effect was a pretty good sci-fi RPG. Also the Knights of the Old Republic series is awesome, id give that a try.

It is a bit of a blend, the second one is more streamlined (ie RPG elements cut), but the first one is very RPGish.

Ya Knights of the Old Republic is Star Wars, the first was done by Bioware and has a better story, but the second one made by Obsidian and has better gameplay, IMO.

I think of Diablo and Dungeon Siege as action RPGs...

    And along those lines:
    Torchlight (as someone already suggested)
    Titan Quest
    Sacred/Sacred 2
    Divine Divinity/Beyond Divinity
    Silverfall

All of the above can be found on Steam, Direct2Drive and/or gog.com for very reasonable prices...Sacred 2 is the priciest of the bunch at 20 USD...Steam is usually a bit cheaper than D2D...and gog is cheaper than Steam...

CSS just got an odd update. Makes it sorta TF2-ish.
TF2 hasn't changed too much. A few new items and engineers can now move stuff.

I found out there are 2 versions of The Wicther:
The Witcher, and The Witcher Enhanced
is it an expansion pack from the original or standalone game with different story and gameplay?

Is it possible to just buy TF2 and CSS online and download it, instead of having to go and buy the orange box and HL2?

A fairly underground game, of a very underground genre that you should try is Freelancer. Now, is a very old game, very much like X3 (which you also missed), but much more fun. I recommend those two. X3 for being such a realistic simulator of life in outer space, and freelancer for being so much fun: a sandbox game in space, what else can you ask. And for the time, those where great graphics.

the enhanced edition is the original with a patch, install either one, but if you get vanilla witcher, go to the website and download the enhanced edition patch, it is free.

Yeah, the gameplay is the same, the witcher came out and had a lot of problems, so they patched it, the patch is HUGE, almost the same size as the game. If you bought the witcher, get the patch, if you got the enhanced edition, nothing to worry about.

My laptop is under repair so I am using my old laptop (and yay for very laggy tf2)

But I want to buy one or two games to enjoy.

I guess the laptop (i5 450m, 4gb ram, ati radeon hd 5870) must be able to handle the games. I've played Borderlands before and loved it. Now I am debating between: Starcraft 2 just for the heck of it, splinter cell conviction, assassin's creed 2, and bad company 2.

Which one should I pick? or do you guys know any other game?

I haven't played Starcraft 2, but as for the other games:

Bad Company 2 for the Multiplayer

If you liked the story of Assassins Creed, I would get the 2nd one (you must play the 1st one to understand the story line), otherwise get Splinter Cell Convictions.

Can you folks recommend me a tactical role-playing game? I'm thinking along the lines of X-COM Apocalypse, Fallout Tactics (but with random mission generation), UFO Afterlight, etc. Here's what I'd love:

    - RPG-like evolution of the soldiers
    - squad-level gameplay
    - weapon customization through upgrades or mods
    - smart AI preferably
    - some gameplay outside of tactical missions, i.e. research, territory management, etc.

    Thanks in advance!

The keys are bound the the standard WASD, it's just that aiming is WEIRD on the PC, it has weird sensitivity, I can't explain it, but the crosshair keeps moving after you stop moving the mouse, inertia or momentum imitation(?), i'd say get it on a console if you have the option.
