OK, thanks for the tip. I suppose a normal 360 controller works out-of-the-box? Is it USB?

So I'm big on fps games but I also like to change what I play all the time. I'm looking to play something new if it's good but there's gotta be some co-op between the players to keep it entertaining, hence the reason why all the CoD series I played got boring to me really fast.
Here's off the top of my head what I have already.
tf2, bf2, bf:bc2, cs, cs:source, crysis, global agenda, lfd, lfd2 and probably more I can't think of when needed -
Brink seems to show some promise, ill be keeping my eyes open on this one when it gets released.

I far prefer Morrowind to Oblivion. Though this is a matter of some heat on certain forums and certainly a personal choice thing. I'm pretty sure the steam versions of both support mods, it wouldn't be worth getting the steam versions of they didn't tbf. I don't play Oblivion so much so I'm int as much into Oblivion's mod scene, but Morrowind can certainly be brought up to current gen graphics or better with various mods and the Morrowind Graphics Extender. I'm sure someone on the Oblivion side has done something similar for it.
For both there are pretty much infinite free community made mods with almost anything you could ever think of that you might want in your game, massive quests, extra content and so fourth. I've even authored my very own modestly successful mod for Morrowind

Though it's at least as much FPS as RPG, Borderlands is a ton of fun, contains a lot of stuff to explore in a pretty open world, and supports a huge variety of (FPS) playstyles. Compared to a game like Fallout 3, the action element is extremely playable, while the RPG element is significantly toned down, but still notably present.
And speaking of Fallout 3, I'm a bit late to the party, but does anybody else feel like its land mass is tiny compared to its predecessors? Maybe it's just the fact that the space between them is rendered, so instead of taking game days to travel between locations it takes game hours, but it surprised me a bit... -
The normal Xbox 360 Wired Controller is USB, and it works right out of the box. Just plug it in, and it should automatically install it's drivers, and your good to go.
All that's left is you might have to select the controller under the options in the game, but (for me at least) most games select the controller automatically when I have the controller plugged in and I start the game.
Also, don't buy the wireless controller unless you buy the adapter which of course is sold separately.
That looks awesome! I will more than likely be picking that one up in Spring of 2011.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
I've been able to get the wireless controller to work by connecting it to a USB port with the play-and-charge adapter, so you don't necessarily need the windows wireless receiver. I just needed to install the wireless controller drivers from the microsoft website.
Edit: This is only if you already have a wireless controller from an Xbox360. If you don't already have an Xbox, and are looking for a controller solely for PC gaming, then go with the wired controller. -
I think my question is similar to a few other's recent questions, but could you recommend a game for me?
I'm looking for a single player (significantly reduces the choices nowadays) PC game. I prefer a game with a good storyline, and my favorite kinds are dark action RPG type games. I've played and loved Mass Effect 1/2, Dragon Age, The Witcher (just finished this one), Fallout 3 (though I didn't think this was as good as it was hyped to be), Bioshock 1, Neverwinter Nights 1/2, and Oblivion. Graphics don't matter too much to me, but still, I'd like something not more than 5 years old.
I don't mind FPS type games, as long as there's a good single player campaign, which seems kinda rare.
I've looked at a few games recently, and almost bought Left4Dead 2 and Borderlands, but the reviews said their single-player is kinda weak. I've also looked at GTA IV (but I heard the PC version sucks), Bioshock 2 (though the reviews said it wasn't as good as the 1st), and KOTOR (but it's a bit too old for me). I haven't ruled these out completely, but I don't see a clear winner. I'd appreciate any good recommendations for one of these, or another game. Thanks for the help! -
If you haven't tried The Witcher, it's pretty awesome. It's translated from Polish, so the dialog can be a little choppy at times, but it has a great storyline and RPG progression, and a medium sized world to explore (though you're locked to certain areas depending on your chapter). It also has storyline-impacting decisions and multiple endings (though they're not as significant as in Mass Effect).
-
Finally! I've been preaching that in these boards for years... Everyone seems to love Fallout 3 but IMO it's almost blasphemy to compare a modest-size FPS with some RPG elements to Fallout 1 or 2. The latter is right up there with Baldur's Gate as the best RPG ever in my book.
I didn't like Fallout 3, but that's subjective. It's not subjective to note that it only takes ~40-50 hours to complete Fallout 3 (side-quests and exploration included) compared to my time of over 200 hours on Fallout 2. Console ports FLW

Shoulld someone who is already spoiled by lots of eye-candy buy:
- Bad Company 2 (I own BF2 and CoD 4
or
- Baldur's Gate Compilation (1+2+Add ons) + Fallout Compilation (1+2+Tactics) + Icewind Dale Compilation
They have almost as same price. 25€/20€
My oldest played game is Jagged Alliance 2 (with v1.13), so not sure will I enjoy them? -
Artistically, the Bioware games, particularly BG2, hold up very well; graphically, however, the games look very outdated.
I'd settle for BC2 if graphics is the deciding factor in your decision. -
If you haven't played BG and Fallout 1 and 2, you don't know what a real RPG is. They beat the crap out of modern RPGs, including Oblivion and *tries not to laugh* Fallout 3.
-
If you're looking for graphics and fast play, BC2 is the way to go.
For a time killer and more strategy base - rpg collection.
i'm currently replaying BG2:ToB and loving it. but if i feel like a quick/ fast pace killfest session, then i go to MW2.
A favorite of mine is Star Control 2 (Ur-Quan Masters). Space strategy game with awesome story, voices, gameplay. Available free too
-
Decided to buy that OldStartegies™ (still missing Planescape from the old classics, I quess?
)
In what order I should play them? Fallout 1 / BG (1) before sequels? Which one you recommend for newbie? -
Thanks for the recommendations! I actually managed to bum Oblivion for free off a friend
. I'll probably be playing Morrowind as well (only $6 on amazon!). Just out of curiosity Poobah, can you link to your Morrowind mod? I'll probably install it when I get to playing the game
Borderlands/The Witcher look nice as well. Yay! Now I have plenty of RPG's to play. It looks like Darksiders is coming to PC as well (don't have a 360/PS3 so this is exciting for me).
Thanks again for the help.
EDIT: For any rpg fans, the new ME2 Shadow Broker DLC is EPIC!!! It's definitely worth the $10.

I just bought two xbox controllers and hooked them up to my pc (through usb) and was wondering if there are any decent games that two players can play on the same computer. Currently i'm playing Street Fighter 4 and Gears of War on the PC.
-
Blur
Split/Second
Pro Evolution -
There used to be a tweak you could use to do this in Left 4 Dead. As far as I know it still works.
-
-
Are there any other Co-op games for the PC? Either split screen or two players on once screen (I prefer this).
-
I think HAWX and Splinter Cell Conviction are co-op as well.
-
Hi guys, lately I've been craving a certain weird game style.. Side scrolling shooters or action RPG. I'm not sure why, but I just really need some nostalgic side scrolling gameplay... if anyone knows a few good ones (don't say Soldat...) then please inform me
-
i've been playing the remake of an old NES sidescroller called "bionic commando: rearmed", love it personally.
-
Looks awesome, I'll check it out...
-
Still nobody
? Since I asked the question, I bought and finished Dead Space, which was pretty good, like Doom but better, though not as scary as was hyped. However, now I'm back at square one looking for the next game. Any suggestions?
-
Might as well go for BioShock 2.

I feel like the reviews about a weak single-player campaign in Borderlands were a bit harsh. Story-wise, it's nothing particularly special, think a Diablo II level of story immersion, fairly hammy plot, but entertaining (and funny, sometimes very funny) interactions with characters face to face, through radio contact, and through recordings. The gameplay is a ton of fun, though. Again, think the depth of a Diablo II-style dungeon crawl, with a lot of fairly mindless killing of basic level enemies (sometimes tactically, and sometimes pure run-and-gun) and the occasional boss where a special technique or weapon works best, but then twist that into a well-designed FPS instead of isometric hack-n-slash, and switch the dark fantasy setting for a bizzaro, comic-book-styled sci-fi wasteland. It's very mission-oriented as well, which keeps you involved in the story and side-quests - you won't care about the characters like a heavily story-driven RPG, but it's still a very fun game.
On a whole different angle, the Penumbra series is quite good (well, the first two, since they totally phoned in the third). They could be described as one logical outgrowth of old-school adventure games, or as physics-based action puzzlers. They have their flaws (the occasionally necessary and extremely cumbersome combat system), but they're worth playing, and the storyline is pretty good - moderately creepy but not excessively so (though Amnesia from the same developers seems like it'll take this aspect a bit further).
Also, if you want to step into the way-back machine, Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are possibly the best action-RPG's ever made, at least by reputation. I've played through Deus Ex probably over a dozen times, and I love it every time through - I'm hoping for the best with the third one due out in 2011. System Shock 2 is virtually impossible to find, unfortunately, so you might not be able to give that one a run. Another excellent (noir) story-driven shooter series is the Max Payne series of games - two so far, with number three impending. Beware that it can be a Payne, er, pain, getting the first one running on a modern system, but it's worth it. -
Thanks guys for the suggestions!

Just looking through this thread reminds me again of how much more freedom us pc gamers have over console gamers ^^. It almost feels like the consoles are slaves.
-
Can anyone recommend any good RT4X games similar to Sins of a Solar Empire, or slow-paced RTS games?
I'm looking to get into the genre, after liking the Civilization series for a long time, but getting a bit tired of the repetitive gameplay. I don't want a vanilla 4X game, though; those look dull to me, and I'd rather play Civilization.
I think I'll buy Sins Trinity (love the demo!), but I want to see all of its competition.
Also, does anyone have a Starcraft II Guest Pass they'd be willing to give me? I really want to try out the game, and could not find any kind of demo version. -
Have you played the Shogun: Total War series? ( Shogun: Total War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I personally haven't but it sounds like it might be your cup of tea (Total War 2 is also coming out - it looks STUNNING: YouTube - Shogun 2: Total War - Gameplay trailer.
As you probably know, Civ 5 is out today (in the US - 24th in Europe), so you can play that if you like
-
Haven't tried it myself, but Star Ruler might be up your alley.
-
True, but with consoles, once you have the console, you can play any of the games that come out for that generation (5-7 years), without having to worry about upgrading to keep up with the times (to an extent). Unless the PC gamer has a dedicated gaming rig, which then beats console no matter what.
-
What games should I buy if I already own/
all half life games
grid
all gta games
mafia 2 (epic)
fallout 3
hawx
crysis
bioshock
oblivion
assasins creed
nfs undercover
farcry 2(epicly boring, cant play for more than 30 min)
mass effect 1 and 2 no dlc though
ghost recon advanced war fighter
thanks alot if you can recommend a good game..
also
why have so many people switched to the 5870? I have a 260m gtx and a native rez of 1440x900, and can run basically every game high settings except EFLC(GTA)..
when should i upgrade my laptop? 1 year 2 years 3 years??? give an intelligent response or do not respond at all..
thank you for your time
RYAN -
No need to upgrade if you can run native at that rez. I think reason why many has bought 5870 is because they are pretty cheap. The Asus for example.
I could recommend:
Bad Company 2
Saboteur
Starcraft 2 to name a few. -
People buy the 5870m because people are upgrading to 1080p which the 260m won't run too well on that res, I upgraded from a Sager 8662 with a QX9200 and a 260m my native res was 1050 and i could still run all the new and best games on high. You should be good for awhile unless you want to and have the money to upgrade, if you want 1080p you will probably need to upgrade your GPU
Also the 5870M is cheap, i got mine for $300
-
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat
Metro 2033 (recommend the free DLC to Ranger Mode for a great game)
The Saboteur
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Amnesia: The Dark Decent (Highly recommended for a good scare)
Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason
The Void (If you like bizarre games)
Pathologic (see above)
Just Cause 2 (52 hours played on Steam, only Mafia II is edging closer 45 hours)
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth (Great story and great scares) -
you are awesome...period
but anything after 2002..
I know i have a crappy 260m...but at my low rez i can play crysis enthusiast.....ect(i can only brag with the low res) -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Thanks for the in depth review - I was really turned off by the corny robot dialogue at the opening and I didn't really get into it, especially because of the lack of compelling characters. But I thought the stylized look of the artwork was interesting and after reading your post I may go back and give it another shot. -
Bad Company 2 if you like shooters that are fun but kinda bugged
I'd say for sure get Borderlands though, all around fun game. -
The 260m isn't crappy. It's just not HD gaming capable like the 5870. It's still faster than even the 5830 I've got
The main problem with the 260 is it's a power hog, like all of Nvidia's chips, which in a laptop is a bad thing for mobility and heat.
-
lolll i'm actually happy to see that! I've logged 10 hours in less than 7 days, I load it up for one mission, 3 hours later I haven't bothered to complete a mission and blow things up instead
-
You should upgrade, when your GTX 260M can no longer maintain 30fps at your native resolution, with med/high settings. If you need LOW, it's time.
Recommendations:
Dead Space
Alpha Protocol
Mass Effect 2 -
stevenxowens792 Notebook Virtuoso
BFBC2
Borderlands
ARMA 2 (plus OA and British add on)
Just Cause 2
Dragons Age Origins
Neverwinter Nights 2 (plus all add ons)
Good luck, StevenX -
I can't help but notice the absence of Modern Warfare 1 and 2 from your list.
If you like modern first person shooters, they are the holy grail. -
counter-strike 1.6 is the holy grail of shooters.
-
Buying Borderlands for compelling characters is like buying a cheeseburger for the nutrition of the attached lettuce, or like playing Farmville for a good reason. The draw of the game is in the very basic stimulation your brain gets from looting shinies and shooting things in the face. I sank more time than I care to admit into Borderlands and will get back into the game come this next DLC pack, but I'll be the first to admit this game is lacking in every area from polish to depth to lasting value.
A blast with friends though! -
Can anyone recommend me a good game with top notch shooting mechanics? Where the shooting feels really fun and controls well?
Or a good RPG with a nice story that doesn't slow down?
Here's a list of games I currently have, so you might have to look a bit harder:
