Looking to play a new FPS. Dont want to play something too dark(scary, think metro 2033) or something too open ended(think Crysis, not too linear like CoD etc. Something in the middle like Crysis 2 is kinda ok). Have played all the standard popular FPSes like Half Life series, Crysis 1/warhead/2(am a FPS fan, so i play plenty of them. Looking for something kinda not too popular that i could've missed.

    Hi guys!

Can someone recommend me an air combat simulation game that doesn't require a lot of time to learn? I haven't played these kind of games for ages and nostalgia struck me recently. I don't want anything too complicated. I just want to blow something up a the end of a working day in order to relieve the stress.

    Thanks.

DCS has an "arcade mode" which removes most of the sim aspects of the game. You might give that a try. You can choose between the A-10C and the Ka-50 heli.

However, you might look into EECH, which has 4 helis and has a nice balance between simulation and fun. You can individually turn off/on each sim aspect, and there is a dynamic campaign to keep you interested. You can start by turning most sim aspects off, and as you progress, if you feel like it, you can turn them on.

GOG.com sells EECH for something like $6.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not really into helis. I'd like a plane sim.

Hi guys! Coming from Medieval 2 and Rome Total Wars, I'm debating what flavor of Shogun 2 should I get from Steam: The game itself or the Fall of the Samurai? Please recommend which is better. I can only buy one game thanks to some spare cash. Thanks!

I hope I'm posting in the right thread :)

I have not played a game in a long long long time. The last game I played through was Half-Life 2 (a very fun and intense game). I remember there was a game called Mirrors Edge which I understand is a short game. Regardless I would still like to give it a try when I have spare time after the semester is over. What I would like to know is if the game is under some stringent amount of times you can reinstall the game? I was told that some games have a limit of 3X while others were pretty much infinite (as long as you had the code). Does anyone have an idea if Mirrors Edge is set up for a limited install? TIA.

Has anyone played tera in beta? I can't get it out of anyone if it'll be a fun game to play.
Anyway if anyone could give me a basic review, I've been googling a lot and watching some videos but Im deciding whether or not to buy it.
And also any other mmo's you might like to suggest?
    Thanks.

Should be infinite ;) do type your Mirrors Edge product code onto Origin, it'll save it on the Origin client.

Hard Reset is a good FPS, somewhat old school. I don't know if you played the F.E.A.R. franchise, the first installment is awesome. Red Faction Armageddon seems to be like Guerrilla, but linear, you can destroy almost everything!

    Singularity
Deus Ex Human Revolution (a bit RPG-ish though)
F.E.A.R. Series (it's not really scary, despite what some may say, and the shooting elements are worth it)

Hey can anyone recommend me a game with these features I like?

    - Variety of equipment (e.g. many types of guns, you can attach stuff to weapons, etc..)
    - Real time tactics (small, micro focused battles... but just position/movement no character ability spamming)
    - Isometric graphics (I don't want a game where I have to rotate the camera)
    - No enemy scaling (Very important... usually when I finish a game I want to replay it with cheats/hacked weapons and equipment as a sort of 'relax mode')
    - No historical games (I don't want those ww1 games or cowboy games or stone age games etc... )

    RTT games I've played:

xcom apocalypse - First played when I was really young... this game is perfection for me. I don't like any other xcom games because turn-based just doesn't appeal to me

mechcommander 2 - Also played when I was younger. Wish the story-line was longer though... or that they would make a sequel.

UFO aftershock - Also very good. Levels get really repetitive though.. scale is larger than I would like (less 'local' detail like cities, buildings, vehicles etc and too much focus on the entire world) I don't like UFO afterlight... the graphics are too stylized and the game is too '3d'.

warhammer 40k dawn of war 2 - Played this because the trailers looked cool and the idea is good.... but there are just too many things I don't like. First, each unit has some unique ability that you need to micro... not my thing. Second, the enemies scale with your level and equipment.... playing the game with no equipment and playing it with the best equipment doesn't really make much of a difference. I haven't played the expansions but they probably aren't any better if it is the same thing. Things also take too long to kill.

I've also liked playing the campaign mode of command and conquer games (started with dune2 and played all C&C rts until red alert 2) and used to play a lot of skirmish games vs AI but I think I'm starting to grow out of RTS... I don't really like the whole base building aspect.

Anyway I am asking for recommendations because I have been out of the gaming loop for a while... for the past 10 years I've pretty much just been playing counter strike and just recently realized how much I miss playing non-competitive games. I would prefer single player games... I do like coop multiplayer games but I am planning on getting my fix with d3 =P

I just want to recommend a unique RPG/FPS mix game from back in the day: Magic Carpet, and its sequel Magic Carpet 2. Made by (who else) Bullfrog.

See the videos for yourselves, and remember that these games were launched in 1994 and 1995 (when recently-launched games included Warcraft 1, Earthworm Jim, TIE Fighter, Doom 2, Mortal Kombat 2, etc). They were complete breakthroughs in gaming. Some of their features (like terrain deformation) are still advertised as cutting-edge features nowadays!

Hi. Can anyone recommend a game (action/adventure, RPG, jRPG, anything. doesn't matter really) that has a good story and good "fantasy-like"/colourful graphics? Final Fantasy 7 would be a good example, albeit an old one. It is my favourite game ever, btw.

To clarify what type of graphics I'm talking about (since everything is technically colourful):
    http://finalfantasy13ultima.com/images/ff13-picture-battle-001.jpg
    as opposed to
    http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/fallout3_1_lg.jpg

Fallout 3 was just too gloomy most of the time. FF13 has some even better scenes, but I thought I'd keep a fair comparison. You can still see the difference though. FF13's on my "to get" list, but I'm not that excited about it after the reviews and I want to get something else before that.
Any recommendation? I haven't played most recent games btw, so don't hold back, even if it's a very popular suggestion :) Thanks!

Hmm so Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2... Both are going to be playable alone I believe, so that shouldn't be a factor.

But does anyone know if GW2 will come to Steam? I know Diablo 3 is on battle.net and probably not coming to Steam any time soon (or ever). But that's not a huge issue, I would just use a game's Steam-availability as a tie breaker if it came down to it.

I really want to know what the core differences are going to be like. It seems that GW2 will be more action oriented as far as combat goes, with a bigger focus on combat while Diablo 3 will be more of a dungeon crawler? Can anyone correct or comment on that, and offer some opinions as to which they think will be better?

    You can try
    - Divinity 2 - Dragon Knight Saga
    - Dragon Age Origins
    - The Witcher 2
    - Drakensang The Dark Eye and its sequel River of Time
All these are colorful and have good stories. They aren't as ''cheerful'' as JRPGs though, they tend to be more realistic. Also, keep in mind DA:O and Drakensang are based off turn-based D&D rules, which means don't expect hack 'n slash action like the Witcher 2 or Divinity 2.

Please bear in mind that The Witcher may seem a bit boring. My favorites were acts 2 & 3 there you had to do some detective work, which involved a lot of going back and forth, waiting for day or night and so on. But in my opinion, those were the best chapters in game.
Other than it's the best such RPG I ever played. Even by today's standards, The Witcher has great graphics (Act 4 was very colorful). A strange battle system at first later became quite enjoyable for me and my mouse. You don't have to do lotsa clicking, just click at the right moment.

In the RTS section you might add Total Annihilation & Supreme Commander series. The latter is the resurrection of the former mid-90s franchise. Like other games of the type, you collect resources to make buildings & units. In this game there are only 2 resource types (mass & energy) which you collect primarily thru buildings, having a unit gather them is only a temporary stopgap to get you thru a shortage (forests, rocks are usually the destructible sources).

What I liked about all of them in the series is the units control & functions were advanced for the time of the games, ie the "peons" (engineers in this case) could be set on a patrol path and would perform any task they were capable of that would be in demand along their patrol route (reclaim/collect a resources, assist in building something, repair a unit).

    ------------

Another RTS series that was a lot of fun back in the day was Age of Empires franchise. I played many hours with friends on LAN & internet in the original & xpacks, and Age of Kings, the second main release of the series.

Hey bro I just wanted to say that you should go with GW2 :p, and I believe neither will be on Steam :(.
I've played GW2 beta weekend, D3 beta, and now D3 live. I never thought I'd buy D3 though (after playing the two betas), but all my cousins/friends were hyping it up. And I do like to play online games with friends, so I did.

Honestly D3 is not my type of game.. the first playthrough was good and cool but when you reach the end of it, it's a huge grind fest for better gear. I could make new characters (up to 10 total) but I fear that one day I will have nothing to do but grind and grind for marginally better gear ( oh god not the WoW formula ). Playing the same act over and over in 4 modes xD.

Really D3 makes me want to play FPS games, just jump in and start shooting lol. It's more of who's got skillz not who's got the time to farm gear :p.

GW2 is more casual friendly from what I can see. What I mean is it will be less of a grind. Gear will be more a choice of different stats, or cosmetics, not about completely having an edge over other people. The world is huge and will keep you occupied for a looong time I hope. Combat system looks great and is different than the standard stand-and-cast-stuff WoW style combat lol.'End game' starts at max level for most MMOs but for GW2 it starts at level 1. The fun begins right away and will probably continue past max level. You don't exactly out level zones as you get scaled back down appropriately for the zone, so it will still give you a bit of a challenge. This is great for playing with friends at different levels.

There is a lot more to be said about GW2 (it seems to be a breath of fresh air for the MMO genre) but I am totally looking bias now xD. What I can say though is that prior to playing a GW2 beta I thought it'd just be another WoW clone. And after playing the beta...I completely changed my mind.

I know it looks like I didn't talk much about D3 but honestly I can't think of much for it...it is that small of a game, not much more to it. If you ask me to pay 60 bucks to Blizz or Arenanet I'd take GW2 now(or when it's released).

I used to be a Blizzard fanboy ( for reals WC3 D1 D2 WoW and SC) but lately it seems that they are just relying on their already established fanbase for profit. They still make decent games but not GREAT games.

These are just my opinions and impressions so far, so take it or leave it haha!

I should stop cause this post is looking wayy too long o_O, but can someone tell me any differences between Torchlight and D3? :p

TL;DR - D3 and GW2 are completely different games, and are in different genres. But GW2 ftw :)

I have been reluctant to purchase any first person shooter, such as Battlefield 3, to play online due to the perceived persona of PC gamers. Coming from a console, will I get absolutely destroyed playing shooters online on PC?

Looking for games as a new PC gamer. New laptop in sig. I have D3 and love it so I have heard Torchlight is a good game and similar.

What games do you suggest? No shooters since I play those on xbox. I like skill based games that also require strategy.

PC is the right platform if you want games that require some skill.

The first one that comes to my mind is Supreme Commander. It's a real-time strategy game (the genre of Starcraft, Command and Conquer, etc), but this one has real strategy. The maps are absolutely huge when compared to other games, and the typical RTS technique of spamming high-tier units won't work here; you have to use combined arms.

League of Legends is another popular one which requires skill and strategy, and it's free.

Can anyone recommend a good combat flight sim?

I'm kind of thinking of something similar to F16 Fighting Falcon (if memory serves), a thoroughly well thought out sim - although possibly not so exacting that you need to be qualified on an F16 to play!

I'm not fussed on the era - WW1, 2 or more modern. And rep for anyone who can remind me of the WW1 flight sim I used to play on a BBC computer about 20 years ago!

PM me any suggestions, I think anything I get here may get lost in other requests!

Falcon 4, with the BMS mod, is probably the best balance between good sim and good game (i.e. with a dynamic campaign generator). The BMS mod improves the graphics and makes the sim almost as good as the best.

I also recommend Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs. Hokum (EECH), which is similar, but with combat helicopters.

The Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) series is the state-of-the-art sim right now, but as a game it is rather poor (you get a set of static missions with the game and that's it).

Can anyone recommend a racing game of the likes of Forza Motorsport (Xbox) or Gran Turismo (PS3), but for PC? I am looking for a game which has:

    - Real everyday cars, like Peugeots, Hondas, Toyotas, etc. I don't want just Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
    - Part customization, i.e., ability to tweak engine, suspension, etc. If the customization is done with real-life parts (instead of "suspension level 1", "suspension level 2", and so on), even better.

Ouch, that's pretty hard. What comes to mind is Need for Speed:Shift 2. As a FM and a GT player, it's going to feel...loose, like the physics aren't right. Of course, that's preference. Shift 2 is the only one that fits your needs.

I went and checked the car list. There's fewer "normal" cars than I would like, but it's still pretty solid. Thanks!

Anyone wants a guest pass for Red Orchestra 2? I have three. It's a good, but hard game (I play on realism), yet easier than ArmA, which is why I like it the most.

I'm sure some of you have checked out the Day Z Mod for Arma II. If you haven't then you should! Go to the website and read about it to see if it's something you might like. It's a nice break from BF3 and SWTOR - so far I'm loving it! :D

    Tip: Play with friends! ;)
