From what I've heard and seen, the single player is fantastic. What I mean by that is the storyline is fantastic. I've also heard that the gameplay mechanics can be a little repetitive or iffy at times, but honestly, I'm going to go buy the game myself pretty soon. It's not every day you hear that a game like this (military/war/shoot-em-up) has a good storyline.

Most ratings (from people who write logical reviews) appear give it an 80 or 85 out of 100.

Yeah man there's a lot of nice 3DTV/Monitor options for Gaming, look for something that's more on the Monitor-side for PCs first - even though there are some nice 3DTVs that double great as PC monitors, ofcourse making sure the PC has the right hookups to connect to the TV. More and more games these days are becoming 3D-capable which is nice. Some games look absolutely amazing in 3D!
It's honestly not a necessity at the moment but a nice plus at times...

Anyone know of a good driving sim for the PC? Looking for something like Gran Turismo or Forza where you can test various types of stock cars around a track.

Shift 2 Unleashed. The only problem I have with the game is the terrible Steering Wheel support and, in my opinion, a horrible commentator that never shuts up. Overall, the feel of the game is there for the cars (FWD Understeer, RWD Oversteer, Tuning, etc.) There aren't many cars compared to GT or Forza, but some good selection no less.

I'm getting a laptop soon, and since I already have a laptop, I wanted to play games that are only for PC, or games that are just more fun on a PC.

    What I'm going to play:
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
    Sims 3
    Stronghold: Crusader
Age of Empires I & II
    Rollercoaster Tycoon I & II
Half-Life 1 & 2 (never played it, but everyone is raving about it so why not?)
Portal 1 & 2 (again, never played it, but everyone is raving about it so why not?)
    Max Payne 1 & 2 (again...)
    Deux Ex
    Arma II
Maybe a Total War/Civilization? (Don't know which game to choose of both series)

Don't really care about graphics. I'm going to be fine with the GT 650M and i7-3610QM.

So, what do you recommend? It doesn't have to be a PC exclusive, but I'm not going to play FPS on my laptop just because "it's better with a mouse". I will always keep playing "mainstream triple A" titles like BF3, MW3, AC3, GTA V, etc, on my Xbox 360. Just like it better that way.

For some reason I'm getting the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and F.E.A.R. games mixed up in my head (probably because I've played neither). Anyway...

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings - First "real-time strategy" game I ever played. Not my usual cup of tea, but that one was great.

Half-Life 1+2 - Just got done with HL1 (fantastic) and will be playing Opposing Force/Blue Shift soon. Can't wait to play the 2nd game, as well.

Portal 1+2 - I heard the first game was better, but my fellow nerdy friends say it's a must-play game. The physicist in me yearns to play it!

ARMA II - Nothing but good reviews on this and I would love to try it out. Heard the learning curve is something steep, though.

    Recommendations:

Dead Space 1 - Currently playing it on PC and am falling in love. First horror video game I've ever bought. Sorry if this quite doesn't fall under what you're looking for, but it's still recommended.

Diablo 1 - Played this alongside Age of Empires II a few years back. I guess the other two Diablo games were disappointing, but this game's atmosphere and music are some of the best I've seen in gaming. Period.

I've not really played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. yet, besides the first mission in Shadow of Chernobyl and just toying around in Call of Pripyat, but the series seems absolutely amazing to me. I'm actually not really a fan of science-fiction, neither in games nor in movies. I can make exceptions though, like for Game of Thrones, The Dark Knight, you know... But normally I like to watch movies and play games that are more based on real life. I really enjoy Just Cause 2 for example. Not exactly realistic, but it is based on real life if you get what I mean.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has just such an incredible atmosphere that I could not let it skip. The whole mysterious atmosphere around Chernobyl; I love it!

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm open to atmospheric games, and Dead Space 1 seems to be exactly that. Not so sure about Diablo 1 though, but thanks anyway!

It seems we're exact opposites then, haha. The sci-fi/dystopian future element draws me in to games, books, and movies alike. Fallout 3, Dead Space (just the first game, so far), and Half-Life are a few gaming examples. Nevertheless, I'll still have to check out S.T.A.L.K.E.R. You've piqued my interest, good sir :D

Also, Metro 2033 seems to be one of those games that relies a lot on atmosphere. Wish I didn't ruin the ending for myself by looking up reviews, but I'll still buy it.

Totally forgot about Metro 2033, looks like a game I could play, and it's also a good stress test for my new laptop, haha. I will also take a look at the Fallout series.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is one of the most bug riddled series ever (the last game, Call of Pripyat, is not so bad), though. It's really poorly coded, and very GPU intensive. That's why it's still a good stress test for modern laptops. Can't do anything about the poorly coded aspect, but the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. community has done something about the bugs; for every game, there is a mod that fixes almost all bugs.

For SoC: Metacognix - "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl" Stuff
For CS: Sky Reclamation Project v1.0.1 Download, Stalker Clear Sky (I believe this one is the last version)
For CoP: GSC Game World - Official Site (although it's not really needed)

There are some really awesome mods out there for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. Mods that make the graphics look amazing, mods that make the atmosphere even more scary, mods that change the gameplay and even mods that completely change the storyline! But I would just play without any mods besides for the bugfix mods if it's your first time.

Short question: Are there any games similar to Zelda: A Link to the Past for the PC? I've found a decent freeware game that was a near clone but it didn't hit the spot. Worse case scenario I'll have to go to emulation and try some of those older games (such as Soleil, Beyond Oasis, Neutopia and Alundra).

From the above mentioned games i would recommend Assasin Creed and Just Cause 2.
By the way the most important games you have forgot to mention which include the old and gold Project IGI 1 and part 2 which was introduced in year 2000(first person shooter), also Commandos parts (strategic) and last but not the least the most remarkable game Fifa, specially Fifa 2012. I guess these games are the games which people do play with full concentration. Also, one can sit alone and play all the games just to satisfy himself but Fifa is such a game which can gather friends and they can have tournaments.

It's not even remotely close to Max Payne 3. Sleeping Dogs is good, looks great too. Everyone is saying the Voice Acting is great, in my opinion, is pretty much is. Melee Combat is so much fun, there are guns but I find myself wanting fists-to-fists fights instead.

Guys, I finished Sleeping Dogs yesterday and it was amazing. Can you recommend me similar game, other than Max Payne 3 which I played.

I loved the ability to move around freely, the open world environment, dating between missions :D and the great story.

If your looking for more of an interesting FPS or RTS experience, I'd suggest Natural Selection 2 (now preordering on steam). Its a nice FPS/RTS hybrid in the same vein as Natural Selection, Savage 1/2, Empiresmod, Tremulous, and Nuclear Dawn.

Sleeping Dogs is a typical sandbox game, you can roam around, interact with the NPC's and choose what jobs to do. Much like the GTA, as the poster above stated.

If you haven't already played them:

Supreme Commander/Forged Alliance (Spiritual Successor to TA) a fantastic rts involving macro strategy rather than micro (think 400+ units waging war on massive maps with giant super units wiping out hundreds of units by themselves). It is fantastic, the only thing that may take adjusting to is the economy/resource system which is based on flow rates rather than stored/collected units. Mods and user created map packs are also recommended once you have gotten accustomed to the base game.

Endless Space, a fantastic modern/streamlined take on the 4x genre (Master of Orion, Sword of the stars). Probably the most slick user interface to ever grace a 4x game and help/tooltips make it very easy for beginners to the genre get stuck in. If you are looking for something a bit more complex (well a lot more complex) then Distant Worlds would be my current recommendation. Utterly fantastic with a truly epic sense of scale and management. Note these two games are of the turn based variety.

Sins of a Solar Empire (plus addons), one of the few truly epic space rts games around. Some might say it is a bit simple, and in truth it is. There aren't that many unit types and maps are all pretty straight forward/similar (star systems linked by star lanes and wormholes). Still a very fun multiplayer game. My personal favourite space rts is of course Homeworld 2, which if you haven't played it and are a fan of rts/strategy games in general grab a copy and play it right now.

Nehrim (a total conversion mod for TES IV: Oblivion), if you like games like Bethesda's games and are wanting more, Nehrim is where its at. Hands down the best mod ever made (I mean come on it has full voice acting). It is a much more immersive experience than any of the Elder Scrolls games and the entire world is hand crafted. Do note that even on godly systems this games still tends to chug at certain areas thanks to poor mesh optimization.

The Witcher 2, an extremely pretty rpg. Story telling is excellent and the characters are very well realized and voiced (especially if you have read any of the books). Combat is fluid and simple (its definately improved after the big patch) and all the staple rpg mechanics are here (npc interaction, quests/side quests, prostitutes, etc...) and character progression is handled through a skill/buff based system.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Pripyat (plus Complete mod), more of an fps game than a full blown rpg. It has imo the best atmosphere in any fps or fps/rpg hybrid. It also helps that it looks fantastic even though the engine/game has been around for a while. Gameplay wise it can be quite unforgiving, and it is a bit rough around the edges. Still a bloody good game though.

Tonnes of other games I could recommend as well but let me know what you think of the above.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

I have already played several hours of: Supcom and SoaSE, will try to play witcher 2, only have played the first and I have never played any game from the elder scrolls series (actually the 1st and the 2nd, but its such a long time that I cant even remember anything)

    now to buy the games!

I got really frustrated with empire at war + republic at war (clone wars mod), the engine is giving me too much trouble. I dont really care about the ocasional bsod, but its a pain to be at the end of a hard earned game (yes its still pretty tough to play as the republic not nigh impossible as it was) and suddenly you cant select anymore of your units, and turn after turn you lose more and more units to avoid this to happen, it started with 1200 units (space + ground), now I have around 650 and it still keeps happening (meaning that I must quit the game and lose the progress), really a shame, I moved to finish the CIS they have around 15 planets left, I have crippled their ship building and troop building capabilities and now I cant wipe that rebel scum from the galaxy!

@ Karamazovmm: Empire at War is a pretty awesome multiplayer game, had a lot of fun with it a couple of years ago with a few friends. Technically we did encounter a few issues, well mainly massive slowdown (can't remember the mod we were running but it increased the total number of units quite dramatically). The latest elder scrolls games are pretty solid, they have their quirks and combat tends to feel quite repetitive but they are still decent games. Also I just noticed your sig, TW: Rome II, bring it on!

@ Leroy_Landers: Supcom 2 was pretty atrocious, I think they must have tried to optimize it for consoles since everything was scaled down quite dramatically. It felt more like any generic rts instead of a TA type game. There are a few mods that are trying to make it more like its predecessor but I haven't tried those yet. Can't remember if the Aion had naval units or not.

Yeah Im anxiously waiting R2TW, actually I thought it would happen after m2tw, but they announced empire.

The deal with empire at war is that its a extremely easy game. Thus mods save the day, but that bug in the aurora engine is a killer. Unfortunately we have no hope that this issue shall be solved, so I look for SoaSE mods featuring starwars (yes Im a nut job for starwars), unfortunately those mods are bugged as hell.

I have been enticed by carrier command gaea mission, I think Im going for that and wargame: european escalation, it uses the same engine from ruse which is a game that I like very much + witcher 2 its going to get me some great hours of no brain activity

Wargame is extremely solid (in many ways it reminded me of WIC), a very good game. The only thing that sucks for me is that most of my friends that game aren't into it (mulitplayer is where its at).

Carrier Command so far has been quite good (but not amazing), not sure if I would recommend it at full price (I got it on the cheap when it was still in Beta). After sinking a few solid hours into it last night I would say some of the mechanics are a bit clunky (was hoping they would have been fixed) especially the A.I path finding. Not game breaking, just annoying.

Are you by any chance into space sims (freelancer/wing commander type games)? If so X3 has some pretty epic Star Wars mods (really gives you an awesome sense of scale).

I was very into space sim games, I have all the star wars franchise that you can jump on a fighter, except battlefront 1, will seriously look into that.

WiC is a great favorite of mine, I loved how though the final mission was, how awesome the mp was, and strangely how it was much more interesting to command a few units instead of huge **** army of TA

too bad that carrier command aint what it could be, it was 20 bucks when a few weeks ago, should have got it. My usual problem with newer games is the HD 3000 that I have. I usually take a peak at the graphics and see if its possible or not to run on it.

Awesome, X3 is a fantastic game. Just be aware that the learning curve can be a bit steep (there isn't really an ingame tutorial). Plenty of guides for newcomers on the web though.

    Hi,

Could someone suggest a good game?

I prefer 3rd person shooters or FPS's like
    -Just cause 2
    -Borderlands 2
    -Battlefield 3
    -Call of Duty

Have the Asus SX520D Model :)

Not a hardcore gamer, but wish to spend some time after coming home from work.

all the call of duty franchise (COD/modern warfare/black ops) are good but dont bother with the dlc's as they are a rip off. black ops 2 released november
crysis/crysis warhead/crysis 2 are all great games. crysis 3 released quater 1 next year
older game like tom clancy vegas 2 is well worth a look.
medal of honour is ok and MOH warfighter is released next month.

steam digital download has some very good deals at christmas and also a few times during the year.

You could try Red Orchestra 2. It's harder than BF/COD, so dunno, you might not enjoy the playing process. Although it has various game modes (classic (like good ol' RO1, realistic and action (COD like)). I play on the first two modes. You may not get a lot of kills, but satisfaction after scoring one is definitely bigger than in COD/BF/TF2.

I would agree that the Mass Effect series is great. But its as much RPG as it is shooter.

As for a stright up shooter the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is also very very good. Just leave the lights on!

And make sure you install like dozen of mods. Vanilla Stalker is kinda lame. It only when you install some mods the game really begins to shine.
A bit dated, but still an awesome game. Even so when playing HL2->Ep1->Ep2. Did about five such walkthroughs, want some moar :D.

It's also as much an animated movie as it's a video game :D

But I completely agree, it's the game worth playing, to say the least.
