Why don't you instead buy games in genres you enjoy and games you are will likely get your moneys worth. Either thoroughly enjoying the lore, story from a single player game of 100+ hours from a MP game... Did you buy your laptop just to benchmark it?
    - Just saying all my favorite games in the last few years could have been played on fine on a 5870M @ 1080p.
    - All the games that were eye candy magic were massive disappointments. BF3 was a joke, worst net coding of any AAA MP game. Far Cry 3 openly accepted to be broken by even Ubisoft employees who have acknowledged management has no plans to fix it. Splinter Cell games recently have been a joke and shunned by Splinter Cell fans. The newest one just looks like COD Black Ops clone, which is hilarious. Even the name is a COD Black Ops clone.
But there is ONE game I think that even your machine won't be enough to max out. And if it is as great as I think it will be, will get your moneys worth in both graphical marvel and gameplay and plenty of hours.
    Star Citizens: Roberts Space Industries
    - Can't play it now, but IMO it's much better to help fund that game than any of the games you mentioned.
    - Littlel hypocritical of me since I am not supporting the game and have no interest in playing it. I think it will be an MMO grind and have nearly zero patience for mmo grinds now. Warframe, Guild War 2 just aggravated me, no fun. And I think it will have micro-transactions etc, and have no desire to participate in that. I'd rather pay for a game, pay for DLCs than play a game with micro-transactions. And it seems it will have a complex economy and will be gold farming. I've played plenty of mmos with gold farming and never again :D

Watch this video at 1080p. It's nothing short of eye popping at how gorgeous a PC only, no thought to console at all game is. I bet the CryTek employees who are working on this game with Robert's are having a blast, seeing the engine being used they way it was meant to, not Crysis 2 or Crysis 3.
    - This game isn't even alpha and I can't think of any game in the past, present or to be released in the future that come even close to the fidelity and detail of this. And from my understanding, this is from actual footage, real time, not pre-rendered movie scene.

This is what you get from a game that isn't published by Valve, EA, Activision or Bethesda. Let's forget Ubisoft since every game they have released in the past 5 years to me look like something that was developed 10 years ago.

    Have fun.

Zymphad posts are so formulaic. "all of the games you like are crap, let me tell you about this one game that isn't even out yet that is way better than everything. this is the only game you should buy ever!"

    Whatever guy.

Far Cry 3 is a lot of fun, as is the standalone expansion, Blood Dragon. Bioshock Infinite is very good, but I recommend playing at least the first one if you haven't already. Max Payne 3 is good. Arkham Asylum/Arkham City are both fantastic.

No, I got your point. Anything published by EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Valve, etc, is crap. Star Citizen looks great, but it's over a year away and mentioning it in this thread is beyond pointless.

I've heard of Star Citizen and I love the Wing Commander games. However, times have changed and I'm looking to play games that will take advantage of the technology available today. This is my first journey into some serious PC gaming and I want to play a game that I would enjoy. I do enjoy a good FPS from time to time that is not Call of Duty. I'm actually probably going to buy Splinter Cell: Blacklist, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, and Far Cry 3. Mayyyyyybbbbbeee even BF3.

    Max payne 3
    Tomb Raider 2013
    Metro first light
    Bioshock infinite

All played with an xbox 360 wireless controller. Have fun

Here's the game I recommend on all these threads these days: Sleeping Dogs!

I used to be that way, and when I first got an Xbox I was always looking for a way to connect a kb/m to the console. And then I got used to it, and then I started gaming on a recliner in the living room, and now I can only game on a controller. I don't even buy pc games that don't support controller anymore. But these days they all do. You lose aiming accuracy, which is bad, but I for one gain better movement, and I have better reaction time tapping buttons and triggers than I do with keys on a kb, so its not that bad.

I play lots of games with controllers, but in FPSes it's more than aiming accuracy, it's also turn rate limitation. You can't do a quick 180 with a controller, you have to do these slow, ponderous turns. It's like driving a boat.

For anyone looking for an immersive open-world RPG, I highly recommend the total overhaul mod Nehrim for Oblivion. Turns Oblivion into a new game really, and it's done very well with a high level of detail and very professional throughout. The voice acting is in German, though, but it has English sub-titles. Highly recommended for RPG fans!

DIfferent gameplay, Cyrodiil vs Skyrim. The modding community is really a strengh on PC and especially concerning The Elder Scrolls Series. That let you play in decend conditions the map you want with the gameplay you want.

Personally I don't consider Skyrim as a good RPG but more as a very good action/adventure game. Moreover, I'm really keen of north mythology.

@baii what do you mean by non sandbox ? a scenarized campaign ? Starcraft II / Warcraft III are references in that kind of game. Company of heroes 1 & 2 too.

Anyone has a suggestion for an oldschool gamer looking for a 1st / 3rd person tactical game (Hidden&Dangerous is one of my favorite game) ?

Why play Super Mario World when there's New Super Mario Bros? The fact that Skyrim exists has nothing to do with how good or bad Oblivion is. Some of the best Total War mods are for older games. Many prefer Quake 3, UT2K4, Sim City 4 and Battlefield 2. It isn't inherently worse just because it's an older game with a sequel.

As others have said, just because the game is older doesn't make it not worth playing. It's still a lot of fun and with a few mods it looks just as good as Skyrim, if not better.

To answer your second question, the mod is REALLY awesome. It's a brand new game basically. New story, new quests, completely new open-world. It has fantastic exploration, a good leveling system, very interesting quests, really cool locations and an interesting, complex story. It's well worth playing, especially on a high-end system because graphically it uses mods that makes it look really nice.

Oh my God, a 21 day free trail O_O

May I clickity click within the next few days? To help balance out some things in my life I've pretty much given up multiplayer games (BF3, Mass Effect 3, Combat Arms, Planetside 2, etc) for story driven games that actually have an end to them, but EVE sounds way too nerdy and awesome to ignore any longer. Other than The Last of Us it is THE game I want/need to experience.

Many games will have settings to enable you to have higher quality textures, models, and so on. Most of the time, when you first start a game, the game itself will choose the video settings for you. You can change video settings in the game but be aware that sometimes having the settings too high may cause minor or major performance lag, but its good to experiment. Since you have an AMD radeon 8970M, you should be able to play games either on medium or high settings.

Put on high perfomance and play with AC adapter..btw MSI GX60 and GX70 have a really weak cpu..so expect a lot framerate drops especially in cpu heavy title..i picked acer v3 772g instead of MSI GX70 which was same price cause its better balanced and with i7 its more for future games like GTA 5(most open world games are more cpu demanding)

I figure this is the best place to ask.

I'm looking to start playing my Elder Scrolls games. I have Morrowind (+ all DLC), Oblivion (+ all DLC), and Skyrim (vanilla). Should I play them in order? Does Skyrim's DLC matter during a playthru? Are they best saved for after the main story is complete? So many questions...

Thanks for helping this behind-the-times gamer :)

The PS4 version has the expansion.

The consoles versions don't have any real DRM while on the PC version requires you to be connected to the internet at all times.
Here are some links that discuss other reasons why the Xbox 360 version is better than the PC version.

I was trying to find a simple open world game like Skyrim but "kid friendly". Basically ability to roam around and explore and fight things but not as gruesome or complex as Skyrim, and something that's quite forgiving. Obviously for my kids. Seems like there should be some things like that out there, but haven't found anything yet.

This might sound silly but have a look at Minecraft if you haven't already.
Also look at Cubeworld - this might be exactly what you're looking for. Its still in Alpha but I've actually got it already and its pretty comprehensive as is.

Honestly if you like Minecraft but want a little extra action like DayZ then I highly recommend RUST. It's a new game on Steam that is currently in Early Alpha. It's not as 'serious' as DayZ nor has all the 'deadly' action but it has all the 'gathering and building' that you love form Minecraft except its in a 'real' world environment. It does have some killing of zombies and even other players but it is VERY kid-friendly. Check out some YouTube videos about it to get a better idea of what I'm talking about, then if you love it come join us in our server called [HAZERT]. My friends and I can help you and your kids get started. Just ask for Master VAL. Hope you check it out and I really hope you enjoy it!

Also might want to check out Proteus though that might not be quite what you're looking for its a generally tame exploration game.
