    Hi,

Would you guys have any recommendations for good games you can play on your laptop with basically just the touch pad. Any genre will do, but mostly turn based strategy games work fine like this.

Reason is that I sometimes like to lie on my couch and just relax with my brick of a laptop (AW17+cooler) lying on my belly.

Obviously the games need to be very slow paced and not about perfect controls.

Games I play this way: Civ 5, Europa Universalis 4, XCOM: Enemy Within. I suppose strategy games are the only ones that really work (?).

Racing games? Unfortunately, I've only ever played a small handful of them. NASCAR 2005 (Xbox) wasn't too bad, Flatout (Xbox/PC) was/still is fantastic (sure as hell doesn't look 8 years old), and Burnout Paradise was one of the worst games I think I've ever played.

Maybe that could give you some indication as to what I'm looking for...? I sure as hell don't know, lol.

Definitely not what I had in mind, but I'll definitely give it a look. Plus, I think the lineup alone would be worth it. What other racing games have a '66 Charger, '68 Chevelle, or a '66 G.T.O.?

I have no problem with modern muscle or racing cars, but it sucks when there isn't any classic American muscle to choose from :( Flatout didn't use their official names, but at least they modeled their cars off of the classics.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll keep looking to see what else I might like :)

Nba or Fifa I need to play with a controller.. but thanks for the suggestions!

I have some of my favorite games in my entire life. But my recommendations to you are: Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, The Settler IV and V and Doom Resurrection of Evil. You definitely should try these games.

I've always wanted to try the "Splinter Cell" games (or any Clancy game, really). Have yet to borrow my dad's Clancy book collection, as well :/ But that's why I'm so excited for "The Division" in what, late 2014 now or early 2015? That and "Watch Dogs" were the only games that looked any good at the 2013 E3 convention.

Also, out of curiosity, how many of you would recommend "KOTOR"? During Steam's winter sale I bought my first "Star Wars" game ("Battlefront II"). Could only ever play the demo on my Xbox via the "Attack Of The Clones" DVD, lol. That being said, I keep hearing about "Knights Of The Old Republic" and I still don't know much about it other than it's a BioWare game.

On the Splinter Cell topic the only one I've bought has been Conviction and I thought it was awesome.

i just installed Star Trek Online for the first time yesterday. Even though I'm a few years late it's been pretty fun!

The early Splinter Cell games are awesome. So are the older Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six titles. I enjoyed them for their tactical and stealth gameplay styles which were a nice change of pace compared to the fast-paced and arena shooters I was primarily playing at the time. Definitely enjoyed Clancy-licensed games more than his novels, which were so absurd and stuck in the past. Not that I wish anybody dead, but if there's any good to come out of Clancy's passing it's that we won't have any more Clancy books.

I'm also pretty excited for The Division and Watch_Dogs. I've been following Watch_Dogs since its famous (or infamous?) first unveiling at E3 2012. (Wow has it really been that long already? I remember Max Payne 3 was my highlight of that year.)

KotOR and KotOR II are masterpieces and not only two of the greatest Star Wars games but some of the best RPG's ever made, period. Highly recommended.

I found the first one tedious and boring. Quit after about 30 hours. Never even bothered trying the second.

Some people have told me I gave up on it too soon. Maybe. If it's still slow and tedious at the 30 hour mark, it's not worth my time.

Mass Effect is very much a spiritual successor in a lot of ways (not all of them positive), but instead of working from an established fictional universe, they created a new one, just as vibrant but with everything you needed to know about it explained in-game. Mass Effect combat's repetitive, but miles better than everything I saw in KOTOR - KOTOR is pure dice rolls, click the attack button and watch the sporadic and insanely-repetitive battle animations until someone's dead.

That said, I'm in the minority. There's a huge fanbase who absolutely loves KOTOR and puts it up there with Baldur's Gate and the first two Fallout games as the best PC RPGs of their era.

Ah, "Star Trek"... I didn't bother with "Online", but the "Armada" series my dad had, "Diablo", and "Age Of Empires II" were the first PC games I ever played :)

Thanks for the thoughts on "KOTOR", as well. I'll probably end up getting both of them within the year (lots of games to play in the meantime, lol).

[Fat Dragon], I consider the "Mass Effect" games to be my favorite trilogy of all time so I'm interested to see what old school BioWare accomplished.

I've only played the first two ME games, but I consider them very good video game storytelling mixed with somewhat mundane gameplay. The best part about them is that playing Mass Effect is like exploring another vibrant sci-fi universe ala Star Wars, and the longform video game format allows them to reveal in one game as much of their universe as Star Wars packs into several movies and spinoff books.

I still wish the gameplay were better - most of the level design isn't even vanilla, if it were ice cream they forgot to add the vanilla flavoring. It's milk. And the mediocre combat... and the boring courier-style side-missions... For story development, it's an A-. For gameplay, maybe a D+ or C-.

Compare to my impression of KOTOR, which would be more like a C for story and an F- for gameplay.

Metallica93, as in born in 1993? That would explain cutting his teeth on Diablo and AoE II... You're not that old. He's that young. ;)

Hahaha. Read [Fat Dragon]'s comment xD I am indeed just shy of 21 so you're good :D

I'm not sure when he got them, but he used to play those games a few times a week and I loved watching him play and asking questions. "Diablo" still has one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time. As it were, "Mass Effect" is up there, as well.

I got through all three games in less than two months and, as a huge sci-fi fan, couldn't stop being extremely happy with the amount of detail put into that franchise. Sure, some of the planetary descriptions were wrong (yes, I could tell just from reading them in-game...), but my God, I've never seen a game pay such close attention to detail. That's what makes good games great. The storytelling was a wonderful culmination of every facet of science fiction even if some things did get a little too close for my liking. For example, it's obvious that the creators enjoyed the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" and "Ender's Game", but at least it wasn't tasteless.

Aside from a few things in the third game, they managed to bottle an entire franchise within just the games (i.e. no comics, books, or cartoons were needed like "Halo"). Just... dang.

I wasn't bummed with the gameplay, but, considering how much effort they put into the universe, it had much to be desired. The first "Mass Effect" is, thus far, the only game I've ever wanted to be remade due to the rehashed level designs. While I thought the Mako was stupidly fun, I resorted to looking up maps online after 30-40 hours because I just wanted to find the ore/salarian tags/etc and move on.

I'm finding Mirror's Edge pretty fun, and Kingdoms of Amalur pretty fun. Both were on sale on origin for $5.99, or $3.89 using a Mexico IP apparently.

Kingdoms of Amalur is a fun game. The DLC for it is awesome as well.

My recommendation for anyone looking for an engaging RPG would be Risen 2. It's gotten some mixed reviews but I felt it was one of the better RPGs I've played lately and I rated it a solid 8.5/10. Great exploration, interesting quests and game mechanics, well-written and delivered dialog and it exploits the mythical pirate theme to great effect. Definitely would recommend it to anyone who likes RPGs. Just stick with it long enough to where it starts to pick up steam. Once the game world opens up to you it gets pretty fun!

I need to pick this back up soon, I played it for a small while and it just wasn't giving me the same sense as Gothic series and Risen before it. I'll try again I didn't move it to my steam Archive label just yet. :)

Well, it's not quite as open as Gothic (which I just finished today - first ever play-through of that game. Awesome game!), but there's still very rewarding exploration. It's a bit of a tunnel design, but I never felt cramped and always felt like there would be something interesting to find over the next hill. The world was really designed extremely well. So well that the 60 hours it took me to beat the game just flew by and I wanted more.

Give it a try, but you should give it at least some hours before it starts to open up and pick up steam. The beginning is a bit dull but I thoroughly enjoyed myself after that.

I've got a similar label on my Steam account: Tried - for the games I've played and given up on. That's along with Played - the archive for finished games - Want to Play for future endeavors, and Bundle for games I got in bundles but will probably never play.

I'm currently working through Fallout: New Vegas. Not sure how it stacks up against Fallout 3 yet - it seems like there aren't as many sidequests scattered around the game world, so exploration is more freeform and less guided. It also reminds me how bizarre it is that Bethesda can have so much success while using such a subpar game engine.

Still, I think the amount of content/bang for the buck (and bugs) one gets from Bugthesda games is waaaaaaay bigger than from "modern military shooters."
And then there are mods, which easily double the in-game spent hours, when they don't crash the game much...

There's a lot of content, and enough largescale mods out there that you could buy any one of those games (Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim) and play three hours a day for several years without going through the same content in the same fashion, but the engine still stinks.

I can now also thoroughly recommend the first Gothic game, which I just completed. The visuals are a bit dated but still look good enough to get lost in for hours. You can use a few texture pack mods which make the game look substantially better. There's also widescreen mode and you can play in 1920x1080. And of course, another great feature is the "multiply draw distance" setting in the System Pack mod. You can multiply the view distance by 10 and it lets you see super far in the distance. Awesome!

I'd recommend playing it with a gaming mouse and mapping one of the main buttons to the CTRL button, since that button is frequently used in the game. Controls take some time getting used to but after awhile they feel great (with a gaming mouse in hand).

As for the game itself, it's a classic open-world RPG. Great storytelling, cool characters, good dialog, exploration, great character progression, etc. Well worth sinking 40 hours or so in it to beat it as I did.

    Enjoy!

Anybody have any thoughts on the mass effect trilogy? Always wanted to try this series out but just never did. Origin has a sale on the mass effect trilogy for $15 so I picked it up. I know it's an old game, but I find myself picking a lot of old games up that I've never tried lately due to sales and what not.

I found Mass Effect 1 a pretty engaging game. The best part of it was exploring this new universe. I enjoyed scouring different planets (which looked beautiful - some of the best graphics I've seen in a game like that), and doing the quests. That said, I never finished it and haven't played the rest of the trilogy. But I'd give the first game a solid 8 out of 10.

Another game I want to recommend is Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Wow, is this game cool. You play as a vampire in a modern Los Angeles setting. It's got great dialog and lore, great characters, wonderful story, strong decisions to make in the plot that have actual consequences, a semi-open city to explore and a pretty deep character customization that includes a very nice character sheet with stats and abilities. It really is a fantastic RPG and oh, it still looks great even though it came out in 2004. It actually shocks me how good the game looks for being so old. It looks just as good as games today due to the art direction, which is superb. And the attention to detail is also fantastic. Highly recommended.

Loved kingdoms of amalur. I initially saw the average ratings for the game and dismissed it but I'm glad I eventually picked it up. A game rarely holds my interest all the way through. KoA did. Wonder if there are any similar types of games out there? I did play dead kel DLC awhile ago but havn't got to the other one.

I loved that game, too. Great game. Dead Kel was great, wasn't it? I really enjoyed that DLC but like you I haven't played the other one.

Similar types of games? Hmm. Hard to say, really. Maybe Two Worlds II, which is an open-world RPG, but the combat isn't nearly as good as Amalur. There's not too many games that are similar to it as far as I know.

There are fewer more beautiful and brutal introductions to gaming.

Playing Dark Souls as your first game is like trying to hip fire an elephant rifle as your first gun.

EVE online is really fun. Started playing it last week. So much you can do. Gotta have some patience to get your skills up.

More fun with a buddy, going off to kill NPC's or pvp against other players.

I'm enjoying the crap out of the Saints Row franchise. Probably much more than I did GTA...and I'm a pretty big GTA fan. The protagonist in SR is flipping hilarious

Can someone help me out here pls. I can't decide between buying Skyrim or Dark Souls 2.
I hear Skyrim is more open spaced and easier to get into while Dark Souls 2 is more action orientated. Looking at the screenshots I have to say Skyrim looks better. Also Skyrim enjoys a vast amount of mods while Dark Souls 2 doesn't, not on Steam anyways.
That said, I like my games to be deep but also have good fair based action, where not everything is required to find the right gear in order to be able to even kill at later stages!
Dark Souls would seem to fit my liking but you seem to die a lot, why is this? Is it possible if I play carefully and slowly I can finish this game in one life?

Can you finish the game in 1 life? Its possible but its very unlikely if its your first souls game. Its unforgiving, the 1st one more so than the 2nd one. You simply cannot be sloppy and go through the game. Its a great game. IMO, its not too hard once you get the basic strategy down, there's an overall strat you must apply to every enemy, boss, etc - I'm not saying its all the same....anyone who's played the game will probably know what I mean. Dark Souls is like Legend of Zelda on steroids.

Skyrim is great. I have nothing negative to say about it other than its very time consuming to mod. A few mods here and there isn't bad at all but when you get to about 50+ mods, yeah; it's time consuming to get it right. Plus you also have ENB which makes Skyrim look better than most games on the market today.

    I would get all 3.

If you have to chose, get Skyrim; and pick up Dark Souls 1 when its on sale and than Dark Souls 2 when you're done with 1.
