After the disappointment with Sid Meier's Beyond Earth, I was really wanting to get back into the 4X swing of things. I was really impressed with Stellaris with the Utopia expansion. It's a good filler until Endless Space 2 fixes its numerous balance issues - that one doesn't quite feel ready for prime time though it's absolutely gorgeous.

Another fun thing with Stellaris is the active workshop community. The full conversion to the Star Trek universe was very impressive.

On the freebie front. A personal roguelike favorite is Powder by Jeff Lait which can be found on his website. It has tiles along with bells and whistles that can keep you engaged from run to run, but not so obtuse that you need spoilers to figure out what the heck is going on.

After finishing Pillars Of Eternity again, I've got the isometric itch back.
But this time I fancy some hard sci fi stuff. Can't seem to find anything of the sort.
Satellite Reign is alright but I'm after some space exploration/rpg isometric type games. Think mass effect 2 + the expanse.

Don't suppose anyone knows of any hidden gems?

Stellaris looks great, need to pick that up......eventually.

Oh my god is cities skylines good. I put it off forever ive been waiting for the next good sim city since sim city 4. The options for advanced geometric cities and great trafic simulation make this a true upgrade.

Also subnautica is amazing if you want a contorller game for vr.

Quick question! Do most all new 2016-2017 Games require Windows 10, 8.1 OS to run them? I just started to notice Windows 7 isn't on the list on some of the titles and was curious. Is it because Windows 7 won't support our new Kaby Lake CPU and 1050, 1060, 1070, and 2080 GPU's??

*****I just answered my own question***
I didn't realize MS only supports Kaby Lake on Windows 10...

Most games are written for DirectX 10 and 11, some even backwards to 9. It is true that Intel is now only officially supporting Windows 10 with their latest chips, doesn't mean that they won't work with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

The way I understand it, while it's not exactly a clean slate, it's close enough that you won't have problems. May have to brush up on some lore but that's all online.

Revisited Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. I had forgotten how well the ship battles and oceans were modeled. Great to just jump in and putz around a for a bit. Enjoying replaying it. Hoping the next one in the series pans out as well if not better.

Been itching for a good sci-fi opera on the scale of the original ME trilogy. Was hoping upcoming games would cover that but doesn't look promising.

I have been eyeballing Destiny 2 but most of the initial impressions on the beta are lukewarm which really throws a red flag on the gameplay cycle.

In the first one aliens attacked. A big orb helped humanz by giving them the floaty robot guy from halo and special powers. Now aliens took the big orb and humanz have no powers or something and you must go kill more aliens.

If any of you have played Civ and thought that you wish it was more complex, I suggest you take a look at any of the Paradox Grand Strategy titles. One of the mind blowing things about these games is that unlike in Civ where you are limited to 20/30 civs to chose from, in a PDX title you can play as any nation/character at any point in time.

Crusader Kings 2 is focused on dynastic management, you chose to start as a count/duke/king/emperor in whatever place in eurasia your heart desires between 769-1453 and through warfare, marriages, clever murder, and other intrigue try to accumulate titles for yourself and your family. Significantly more fun than it sounds, has a really popular game of thrones mod.

Europa Universalis 4 is more focused on nation states and conquest. You can still acquire personal unions through marriage but most of the game is about conquest. The game also had detailed mechanics for things like colonization, technology spread, and trade. The game covers the span between 1444 and 1821.

Victoria 2 is a bit antiquated at this point but has aged well. It has the most complex peacetime mechanics of any of the titles and features a very impressive global market economy where prices fluctuate based on production in all the provinces in the world/tariff policies/supply/demand. Colonization, westernization, political reform movements, and spheres of influence are omnipresent in this title. Covers the 1836-1914 period.

Hearts of Iron 4 is quite focused on warfare, covering the period between 1936 and 1948. Advances in military doctrine and technology are the player's focus during the interwar period, and important nations get focus trees where if you wanted to make France go communist and join the Soviet faction or wanted to play as a Facist Luxembourg joining the Germans, you could do that too. You can enable "historical focuses" to avoid the AI from doing things like this if you wanted to play a more historical game.

The tutorials suck, go look at their respective wiki pages for helpful stuff. My favorite quote about these games is that the first few hundred hours you play them is your tutorial.

AC4 was my favorite of the series so far. (I had started Unity and played it just a little recently.. I'll get back to it soon).

Yes, I have played every single one up to AC4. Yes I think it's better than AC2..

It's worth it, not the best one though. I do have a soft spot for the series though. For some people it might be good enough to watch the cutscenes and get a cliff notes on the story and characters.

Yup, AC3 was boring I found.

I've played all of them and although ACO introduced a leveling system, everything else will be familiar to AC players, but with one huge difference. Everything is just better/slicker.

The little stuff with NCP's is varied and enjoyable, in fact all the usual stuff you see in AC games is so much slicker. I've played over 200 hrs and still see something new every time. You can see what 2 years for a huge development team can do with a solid base.

Still playing but it's looking like my all time fav ever for games of this genre. This is the first time I never use fast travel, there's so much to see.

Of course it could be said it's just a grab bag of previous features (leveling aside) and that's valid if the story doesn't involve you enough.

Off now for another session

Just bought a gaming laptop with Geforce 1070 MaxQ. I was wondering what games do you recommend since I am out of PC gaming for years. I really like FPS (not sci fi ones but the realistic ones), flight simulators, strategy games for building cities, armies, etc... Please send recommendations. Thank you!
