can't wait to make my dunmer mage with a stealthy twist!
-
Probably Orc, because stealth and magic are both for GIRLY MEN.
Possibly Breton. Because those racials are stupidly overpowered, if previous Elder Scrolls games are anything to judge by. I get Atronach without having to gimp my mana regeneration? Plus 25% base magic resistance? Sign me up! -

I think it's a once per day power that lasts for a short time only, like Orc Berserker Rage. -
Those once-per-day Greater Powers were the dumbest thing in Oblivion. They were only mildly inconvenient, and you could always just wait 24 hours and use it again. I did it all the time with Moonshadow on my stealth assassin Bosmer character.
-
Hmm. Point taken. Still, though. It's not like you're going to need that ability that often, anyways; the most difficult magic fights would likely become almost trivially easy with Dragonskin activated.

From what I've seen, there are some really tough mages in this game.
The A.I. for enemy mages seems a lot smarter. They switch up their spells, revive fallen comrades, block with shield spells, etc., and people seem to have to keep reloading to beat the higher level mages. -
I am completely new to the series and probably going to start with skyrim.
One thing really bothers me — how do i fight in first person view? It seem to lack a lot of fun factor. Lets say in 3d person view you can see your character dodging, crouching, moving side to side, going inflames mode radiating all kinds of cool stuff while casting. Not to mention you clearly see whats going on around you, can even spot enemies approaching from behind faster.
Do u guys play it first person view or is there 3d person view as well?
I am afraid of being stuck with watching my arm with a sword for the time being.
Really like witcher 2, mass effect 2, Dragon Age II and the likes in this department. -

There is third person as well but first person is better imo. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
I played Oblivion about 60-70% of the time in third person, switching to first person for things that required more precision like aiming a bow or spell, etc.
I suppose I will probably still use some combination of both. Skyrim's 3rd person is greatly improved from Oblivion and IMO the third person melee animations look better than the first person melee animations, especially the power attacks.
If you become aor ride a horse, you are automatically changed to 3rd person.werewolf -
I HATE 3rd person view. I am sorry but that doesn`t fit this game at all. I have to play 1st person because TES games are like a story. You get much better "feel" to the story with 1st person view, plus the fighting looks plain silly with 3rd person. Even in Skyrim
My opinion ofc -

The werewolf gameplay looks really cool in third person -
I cant play first person hacknslash, looks so dumbed down.
Imagine barbarian whirlwind – you would prolly get sick xD In 3rd person — no probs, looks cool, those snow particles whirling beneath you, totally awesome.
Like you watching your hand constantly — smack left smack right repeat. boring. -
First person combat is brilliant in Elder scrolls if you ask me. You see the sword and shield in front of you and you see how it swings in the air. Plus you get an eye on when your enemy tries to swing at you.
And like mentioned earlier, aiming with a bow is made for 3rd person.
But anyways, seem like you have made up your mind, even if you never played TES before. -

First person mode is what separates Bethesda RPGs from every other RPG for me. So it's unique and I enjoy it!

You think? I always played a stealth/marksman every ES and played in FP mode so i can zoom in once i get high enough skill. I never played 3rd person...ooc how is it different from 1st? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
I really enjoy switching back and forth frequently.
When playing on PC, all you need to do is scroll your mouse wheel and you can zoom way out, really far as you travel the landscape and scroll all the way back in to first person with a flick of the mouse wheel.
As for combat, I found that archery and certain kinds of spells were much easier in first person, but generally I like to see what the character is wearing (installed OOO, MMM and Francesco's and high res armor texture mods which add a lot of cool new armor and weapon types). -
Eh I never play a game in third-person if it also offers first person.
E.g. Minecraft, Mount&Blade, and in this case TES games. -
Exactly! Farming few hours for something you cant see? woa! Give shiny pixels!
But i got your point — i also enjoyed fallout 3 first person etc. Its just animation of fighting isnt that hot in first person imo. But who knows — maybe i ll zoom in and it will be all cool. -
ooops a typo from me there. I totally agree with you there. Shooting arrows in Elder scrolls games is of course made for 1st person not 3rd. Sorry about that typo. I love to see the arrow just fly straight ahead and right in the nugget of the enemy
-

Ha np. I was kind of hoping that there was an aspect to 3rd person i missed! -
I'm a first-person player as well, it just really adds to the immersion factor for me. Being able to look around and see the ceiling above me, see my weapons and shields wielded right in front of me, or be at eye-level with NPCs (bosmer and nords removed from the equation, of course
) is what separates Elder Scrolls' identity with so many other RPGs out there. Specifically for rouge-like characters, I find the stealth gameplay much more appealing in the first-person perspective.
Granted I very much like to see what kind of gear my character is wearing, so I will take the occasional visit to the third-person perspective. -
Just a quick headsup to all of you who pre-ordered Skyrim on Steam. I don't know about other areas but here in the UK, Skyrim is now avaliable for preload. Exit your Steam client and restart it, watch the advertisement screen to see if the preload comes up or simply check your game list!
The Steam forums are still down for maintenance otherwise I am sure it would be filled with OMG Skyrim Preload posts... -
I'd already finished the pre-load (I almost never buy a game in advance of the release date but for Bethesda I'll make an exception)...took maybe an hour to download
.
-
If anyone wants to save $6, just order the game off direct2drive, go to download, then take that key and walk right over to Steam and ACTUALLY download it. Youre just buying the Steam key for a discount from direct2drive. Pretty nice deal
-
If I have not played Oblivion, would you recommend it still? This being 2011 and all.
-
I replayed it for a while in the summer and still got into it. That said, it feels pretty dated. Might make Skyrim feel that much better if you played oblivion for a couple days though
-
Well I played FF7 in ~2004-5 and still enjoyed it
-
Absolutely. You do not really need to know the story of any previous ES games, similar to Fallout where there is a new story each game.
-
The storyline in Skyrim is 200 years after the storyline in Oblivion so...it's pretty irrelevant unless you are REALLY into game lores etc.
-
Well I've never played it, so I thought I might pick it up for $5-$10 somewhere and waste my time until Skyrim goes down in price. When I'm not playing BF3
-
In 32hrs I will be waiting for the doors of my local gamestop to open.

The Steam version unlocks at 9pm tomorrow pacific -
I see that Steam offers something called preloaded with skyrim. What is that? And what stops people from playing it or cracking it when they have the data of the game?
-
Pre-loading = Steam allows you to download the entire game client with A FEW MB of crucial game data missing. It is impossible to crack the game with only the pre-loaded data, it's kinda like giving you a car without the spark plug.
It relieves Steam of the massive download stress that, without pre-loading, would happen on the launch day of big games, while at the same time ensure that no one is playing until launch day. -
It also allows people to jump right in when it's unlocked, instead of waiting 3 hours for a download.
-
More like 10 hours (if no pre-loading), because the download speed would be at 100 kb/s regardless of your isp speed due to Steam congestion of 1 or 2 million downloading the same game at the same time.
-

I was a bit surprised that Steam's servers seem to have been handling very well what is likely a massive number of downloads for MW3 and Skyrim this week. -
Ah I see. Brilliant
-
My Skyrim preload was at 400 kb/s but at the last stretch it crawled down to 40 kb/s but its done now.
Not long until i become "dragonborn". :3 -
I can't believe the wait is almost over, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas again!
Lucky for me the EB Games in my city is literally 10 steps out of the back door at the restaurant I wok at. I'll be sitting at the bar with a few friends sucking back some cocktails while everyone else waits in line outside in the cold. At about 12:30 we will casually stroll into the store with the hint of a buzz, pick up our copies, then go home and play!
Can't wait! -

I'm rolling some dice on not preloading Skyrim on Steam. Picking it up where I live I may be able to grab it a little earlier than midnight EST, depending on when the shipments roll into the stores I've left my contact details with. Or their shipments might come in late and I might be a sad panda.
On the bright side, it'll also be cheaper than it is on Steam, working out to around 40 USD. -
My Skyrim preload was about 900kbs and took 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete I think.
-
Only one more day guys... Just 1 more day. :3
-
Oh my lord. Having to never hear about this game, and then watching the trailer. This is a must buy for me. Do I have to play previous elders scrolls game to understand this one (plotwise)?
-
No, from what I've heard.
-
Nope you can start right here. Or at least that's what Im doing.
But damn, you must've been living in a cave to not hear about Skyrim until a day before release
. (No offense or anything
) Just like my CD Key suppliers for the game down in Russia. Even they didn't know about the game until I asked for it lol. -_-
-
The developers say that Skyrim will have infinite quests....
I don't know whether this is old news but it is the first I have heard of this.
-
Take that with a grain of salt; before TES4 Oblivion was released, they promised radiant AI where people steal, murder, sabotage, hunt, and farm; we ended up with "hi" "i saw a mudcrab the other day" "good day".
