There are quite a few listed in the free games thread.

    From personal experience though....

Dungeons & Dragons Online was pretty fun for a while. I like how the combat and leveling system is based on DnD rules and how everything is instanced. But a free account has a few annoying restrictions like limited auction house activity and limited character creation options, and by about level 10-12 you'll get to the point where you've run out of new content that you can play without becoming a monthly fee member (and getting access to just about everything) or a microtransaction member (and being able to by access to content one dungeon/zone at a time).

Runes of Magic reminded me a lot of WoW and you can do quite a lot with a free account but I'm sure by the time you reach the end-game content you'll probably have to bust out some cash to buy access to the best instances or whatever.

Aces Online takes a pretty unique approach as an air combat MMO with a heavy focus on PvP. You can play a fighter, a bomber, a flying siege tank, or a caster type plane that can heal and summon. I played the flying siege tank type and it was pretty fun for a while but I found the PvE content to be very reptitive and there were a lot of cheesy tactics in the PvP.

Drift City is another unique one, this time with a racing theme. It has a lot of car customization like what you'd see in a game like midnight club. PvE content is mostly things like delivering a package, patrolling some checkpoints, or some other form of get from point A to point B and/or C/D/E... within a time limit. But there are also missions where you have to hunt down and ram enemy vehicles to death. You get bonus exp and rewards based on time taken and for things like doing stunts or driving through oncoming traffic. Pvp is, well, racing.

I was playing Crysis Wars and downloaded a custom map. Unfortunately it was a clan map and I'm not allowed to join. Is there a way to find this map and delete it? I'm using Steam by the way.

They're quick, flashy, don't take much skill or involvement or the little they do is easily assessed and acquired by the young and inattentive. That being said I still enjoy them as much as any other game :p

But there is no strategy, no way of overcoming others with numbers, no micro management...only moving around and not getting yourself killed following a pre-defined path with enemies following a predefined road and the same actions always.

Agreed. They don't take a lot of thinking, but on the rare occasion I need a break like that from something as complex as Sins of a Solar Empire or the like. Some people that (a lot of people) just aren't very good at thinking to start with, so they find the FPS niche to be appealing. I think of the relationship between FPS and strategy games like that between beer pong and chess. I find both fun and you can be skillfull at each, but one takes a heck of a lot more brain power.

I have seen friends playing games like COD on the hardest, and they go like "wait here for x seconds, there is the bad guy coming from the left, aim at this location and shoot, and when you do that, another one dies" and "there are bad guys here, here, here, and there is a sniper, and you go this way to bypass them, and there are secrets here" and you see them play, and it is always the same, not even some emotion on the game. Just moving the fingers and doing all automatically. When online is the same, its not even fun, they know all snipping posts, how to get to a unreachable place, where to find x weapon, etc.

On the other hand, an RTS and 4X or even an RPG are different, as in there is a little more thinking and more "what if" and the thinking of what to do and how to do it.

You need an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver (there's a black version too to go with black controllers).

You can probably find one for $20 if you shop around, or less if you get a good deal on ebay.

There is no cable you can use to make it a wired controller, the charging kit cable is just for charging, not data transfer.

A regular old wired xbox controller will work just fine too and you can get those for $20 or less if you shop around and buy used. It doesn't have to be the kind that says "for windows" on the packaging, just make sure it's an official microsoft controller and windows will be able to automatically install it when you plug it in to a PC.

Man I can't wait for Black Mesa to come out. When it does I am going to marathon play through the entire half life storyline with the help of the Half Life 2: Update mod to bring HL2 and Ep1 up to the orange box engine as well.

Here's a teeny little half life 2 shotgun shell mod I made. Compatible with just about any game that has the half life 2 shotgun in it.

    Sendspace Link
    Megaupload Link

Basically it lets you change your shotgun shells to all kinds of different types, make sure to read the readme for instructions. Most of them do 64 damage if all pellets hit, which is 8 more damage than the normal shotgun shells. The ones with lots of pellets make lots of gore. Oh and it sets your max shotgun ammo to 60 and has a command to spawn a shotgun and lots of ammo.

    Shell types
    Crabshot: 64x1 (64 pellets, 1 damage each)
    Lionshot: 32x2 (32 pellets, 2 damage each)
    Zombieshot: 16x4
    Combineshot: 8x8
    Huntershot: 4x16
    Guardshot: 1x64 (slugs)
Defaultshot: 7x8 (the normal values, 56 max damage, also sets max ammo to 30)
    ThousandNeedles: 1000x1 (may cause slowdowns)
ElephantGun: 1x256 (2 hit kill an antlion guard)
    Boomstick: 32x64 (slaughter everything)

After a long haul on Borderlands yesterday my vision went all crazy, seeing real things as if they were in Borderlands. Cool, but a little worrying at the same time

Razer's 360 controller looks pretty neat, will the extra shoulder buttons all you to make macro's or something?

You should try adjusting the FOV, as it defaults at 65, while our widescreens are more natural at FOV 90.

I get dizzy if I play at the default field of view settings.

Hi guys, I have some questions regarding processors since I´m looking to renew my laptop. I apologize it is obvious but I have been disconnected of the latest news:

The processors i5 are much better than the core 2 duo? For example: an i5 of 2.26GHz would handle better GTA4 than a core 2 duo of the same speed?

    Thank you beforehand.

I recently used Rivatuner to show physical RAM usage on screen during gaming and noticed some games using more than 3.2GB's, other modded games used more RAM due to modded high textures and recently the Just Cause 2 Demo recommends 3GB of RAM. I remember many saying that 4GB was all you needed for gaming.

Question. Will a 8-9k 3dmark06 laptop be enough to play the last game in the Mass Effect trilogy (due 2011)? Just a rough estimate (on nearly no data, I know, but still).

Will Unreal engine 3 be outdated till 2011?

Unlikely since Mass Effect are console ports and they will probably use that again for the consoles. So unless they plan on creating or using a different engine for PC, expect your computer to play the last of the trilogy :)

The answer to your question is definitely yes, but I'm much more interested in knowing what GPU is producing this 8-9k 3dmark06 score.

UE3 will run maxed out on anything as fast as the 9600M GT GDDR3.
