Of for activating g-sync yeah theres a white list by panel in the bios, I've been told that before.

Its most likely a resistor. You probably mod a non gsync card to be a gsync card.
-
That's sounds like the system BIOS is programmed to disable the screen if GPU ID doesn't line-up. Clevo did that on ZM systems when g-sync was new but stopped it afterwards.
Nope, they actually moved the ID bits into the DIE structure since Maxwell.
We swapped a core to another board and the IDs went right with it to the new one. -
That is the next level.... So its disabled by microcode eh?

I did not know that. Thank you for that, always good to know whats what. -

In other words, Alienware 18 stuck at 980m? Thats a good joke for 4000$ machine. I have no idea what are the possible alternatives on this machine. I myself open to the idea of soldering/machining the laptop to be inline with the future hardware.
P.S,
Can this be used for the conversion of signals?

Even If the FDI support exists on the Haswell and the HM87 Lynx point PCH which doesn't have proof to back while a few Ivy Bridge machines can do that with proof (60hz-1080p panel with a 1070 will bottleneck the CPU insanely and no use best is to get a 120hz-1080p), the issue is the MUX properties with the Stock sBIOS - Since the AW18 machine doesn't have an unlocked BIOS it cannot have the Optimus, SG/PEG modes. Only iGPU or dGPU modes with the stock locked BIOS sadly. LVDS to eDP conversion is not an option because there are no Pins on the Mobo to do that..need to get Blueprints and understand the schematics then solder one, A hard and daunting work.Papusan likes this.

Cant really understand Dell point on view on this, they sold 4k $ machines without the option to upgrade.
If this is the case, then Im selling my 880m pair for a 980m pairPapusan likes this. -
We talk about Dell and Dellienware's CEO Mr. Azor here. The first Haswell machines (Aw17-18) was the first step for crippling all the options to upgrade. Next step was fully soldered trash. Not only for the graphics... The whole package of hardware!! DELLIENWARE Is And ARE DEAD!! Not a options for power enthusiasts anymore. But you can still upgrade the ssd's and HDD in the newer AW models.TomJGX, Ashtrix, Solo wing and 1 other person like this.

They will come back to enthusiasts in the next few years, 4k gaming is not to joke about when it comes to power. I would love to see how a soldered bga garbage is going to handle 4k gaming.
Pc (portable) will surely lose to consoles that are ps4 and xbox one S especially as they are being marketed as a 4k machines. -
Don't expect miracles from Dellienware aka now only DELLMACHINES!! 2-3 weeks ago told AW ceo Mr. Azor that even MMX graphics is unwanted in their machines JOKEBOOKS in the future. The future is still BGA!!

His answer is unaccepted, Clevo is still using desktop part, he himself said it, he wants to fool the unaware customer who they think alienware is a gaming enthusiasm brand.
Stills his Bga machines wont run 4k no mater what. -
I can't say anything other than what to be expected from the Dellienware camp. Don't hang the messenger
-
Forget BGA - Just a tip of the iceberg, We are lucky enough to see & own original Alienwares - true computer machines & Clevos sporting the Desktop components starting with the Panther 5...
Future is very unpredictable due to the sheeple, It's our job to make them realize, thanks to Prema / Clevo / NBR Enthusiasts.Dell had bought Alienware in 2006, it had the machines made by Clevo as a partner. Yes it dates long back, Then further down the road we had many extraordinary machines - M15x, M17x, M17x R2 the SLI one - First gen i7 machines, Beautiful design and full customization options from website. Later we had the Sandy Bridge platform, (excuse me if I missed the timeline of a few old machines) M18x SLI 580M one and M17x R3 they all had beautiful same design principles and exemplary build quality unmatched performance and full MXM machines with precise heatsinks across all, This had continued upto the M17x R4 and M18x R2 with Ivy - Meanwhile the Desktop market also had amazing lineup with ALX chassis and Aurora, Area 51 machines which were top at that time - This is what Golden Age of Computers, Alienware, Liberty consumer choice was.
Starting from 2013 things went downhill in all - First blow was Win8 and It's B$ UEFI starting with the post M18x R2 time - Alienware Haswell Era - Our machines which had the huge re design on every point - started with the removal of MgAlloy chassis to only middle frame, Lid being MgAlloy. Plastic Backplate with not so strong design, CPU and GPU fans with low CFM ratings, Battery removability gone need to remove the backplate, NVRAM BIOS (The Ultimate cancer infestation, CMOS reset wnt reset the BIOS need to use specific tricks, this is mentioned in the links above this post, Secure Flash locking the sBIOS modding unlike the Ivy Bridge Platform - Thanks to @svl7, Prema, Johnksss. Svl7 is MIA now, He was a really good person I knew him since 260M days of my M15x was a real good guy now we only have Prema with us who does the mods for Clevo's, did them for 980Ms Svl7 did mods for vBIOSes until 980M starting with 460M I guess, We really miss him hope he's doing good) Gimped Fan tables, locked FAN RPMs in EC, No laser Etching personalized option, Removal of customization on website, AW18's motherboard hardpower cap vs M18x R2's no power cap, Professional OCer Mr. Fox had 780M in SLI in his M18x R2 pulling from 600W using a dual power brick (This machine was superb with thermals, OC options, User control over HW total fantastic build, beast looking only match was Eurocom Panther 5 the X79 chipset machine which can run Xeons and Hexacore CPUs, She also got struck by the MXM dropping by Nvidia after Maxwell), He started with 580M SLI, 680M SLI, 7970M CF, 780MSLI - Unfortunately 980M SLI didn't work properly when OCing the CPU and GPU causing some EC communication across the board and throttling, Dell could fix that but they didn't care. AW18 was delayed indefinitely (end of 2015) the time when Maxwell was announced maybe the Dell was restructuring the strategy and wonder why the Haswell had redesign ? Also Dell had killed the XPS performance machines to the kiddo crap now.
The Dell announced going Private from Public in 2013 and thus all these restrictions, Might wonder why does this have relationship ? Yeah the thing was - A member here had a known contact and the reality was during the acquisition of Alienware in 2006 the deal was made, Dell will be funding the Alienware but slowly gain control over the Company and implement their own design standards, marketing strategies and principles, I didn't mention the Desktop market right ? (here's a few posts One, DT garbage, [read the thread also] from Cass-Ole a fellow enthusiast and amid lover of real beasts with hardcore looks). And now later 2013 the 14 Haswell machines came with HQ option - Intel BGA filth, started it was a shock to most of the people but by that time the dumbing of consumers took place, thanks to Facebook and kool-aid crap. Asus used to manufacture proprietary MXMs (ROGs with 460Ms) dunno what they were upto while the Desktop hw from them is superb, Since Dell departing from the PGA mobile CPUs to BGA hell Intel might have made all OEMs take the same direction, I bet this is what happened with Dell dropping the socketed machines from 2014 Intel could easily push the BGA abomination, MSI didn't even exist in this class at that time, Now here we are the BGA Genocide - All laptops shipping with that Garbage Win10 and BGA crap., MSI being the crown but still offering stupid BGA CPUs while their nasty practices are famous in the MSI forum if you want here's a little excerpt from that, Partially the users are also the cause of this being not thinking and addicted to the iCrap, no offense but the lack of choice makes me cringe and anger.
Nvidia dropped the ball on the MXM 3.0b reference designs thus we have this all weird MXMs from MSI and Clevo from 9xx Series they conducted an experiment of dropping M and introducing desktop class, It was a bait and we couldn't resist the performance and boom all jumped and they even kicked the old consumers using those 9xx desktop class machines P77xDM / 870DM machines from Clevo can't upgrade to Pascal due to redesign of the Pascal GPUs, Though this time prema said clevo will push the same design. Only time will tell. -
I love seeing your posts and knowing that my AW is in a way, better than the current ones that are 3 years newer than mine. I am so glad I held onto and took care of this rather than selling it for less than it's worth to a friend. I can't wait to upgrade it in the future hopefully and keep the thing kicking.

I want to buy the Raden Rx 480 MXM for my Clevo P150EM however I got a LVDS monitor, but I heard the Clevo P150EM also has a eDP port as well so technically, it can work no?
-
Optimus i.e. the Intel iGPU should handle the eDP to LVDS conversion.
Your main problem however is EC triggered autoshutdown, I've not heard of any rx480 working in a clevo yet without this happeningdzpliu likes this. -
Yeah I just read, a damn shame, not sure if there is a way to bypass it, I seen people use Dell cards in Clevo's before without an issue.

Guys do I have to sign up to AliPay to buy from TaoBao? AliExpress has AliPay too but when I sign up for it over there its in English, can I use AliExpress AliPay in TaoBao? There some good deals on the MXM cards there, I want to keep an account on there in case I find something cheap.
Also this guy sells a AMD FirePRO W7170M 4GB MXM card, but when I asked him if it would support Clevo he said he would "flash vBIOS for Clevo" but its a Dell card, so what is going on here?

Alipay = Chinese version of Paypal in my opinion, so Alipay should be usable in all Alibaba websites. Alipay is also used as alternative to Applepay, Alipay is very widely used in china.
You have to do your research carefully before buying anything from taobao though. You have to read the T&C carefully, some shops do not ship to overseas, some shops do not accept returns/refund, some shops are shady. Basically you need to look at the comments section. -
Aright thanks, I might just wait for Geocubes rumoured amazing GTX 1070 MXM plug n' play card, since Clevo and their beloved non-acceptance of Dell cards is a no go.sasuke256 likes this.

Me too, the card should be fine, GeCube is a company invested by Gigabyte. So i kinda trust the card quality.
-
We've been waiting for ages, I don't expect anything anytime soon tbh... However if they do get something out and works with Clevo and is <600 USD, I might get it for my P771ZM...
-
Don't worry will update when it is out. Will post here when someone tests the card. According to Gecube, the testing card will be available around end of Feb, actual card probably March?April?sasuke256, SMGJohn, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this.

P&P on clevo only isnt the best idea though, they should also target MSI's which have a considerable upgrade market.
-
I'll get into desktop PCs, but I still hope that BGA doesn't become the only thing in the market.Papusan likes this.

Considering that Eurocom was able to make a modular out of an MSI barebones before they did it is quite laughable. I don't know how Eurocom managed MSI's technology correctly while I hear people talking about MSI going back on their upgrade promises.
sasuke256 likes this. -
It was available as barebones before Eurocom put their logo on it. What msi chooses to push to the market under their brand is entirely up to them. Not that I like any of the msi offerings and even less the upgrade (mis (is an msi anagram. Coincidence?))handling, just stating things the way they are.

Did any of the MXM card group buys occur yet? Has the official rx480 MXM(E9550) been found in the wild? Has anyone experimented with the 150w TDP Taobao rx480 MXM? I know a lot of people on this thread required LVDS output but I think(and hope) my G1 Zbook 15 outputs eDP from the mobo
-
RX480 is out of question.
1. unable to light up internal displays (probably vbios problem)
2. auto shutdown after 1min. ( EC problem)
no fix for either of the problem. no available RX480 mxm vbios. EC problem is a hardware thing.Last edited: Feb 21, 2017 -

Thanks, I have noticed people refer to the EC problem in Clevo laptops but what does it stand for? Error Correction? They were able to get into windows though right? was that using an external display? -
Embedded controller.
-
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
Thanks -
Embedded Controller, the hardware that monitors temperature.
External display, got into windows, auto shutdown after 1min (even if you stay at BIOS screen). So basically pointless. -
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
Thx I take it this has only been tested with Clevos? -
In 16L1 and M17X R4 as well.
-
okay. we got to test it in 16f4
-
If it works in 16F4 it probably will work in 1763 too
-
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
did it have the auto shutdown in those units too? -
Not in 16L1, but still no internal display.
either way, there is no support for these cards at all.
you can try if you want, to me, AMD is out of the game. -
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
Thanks, that's unfortunate but not ultra surprising since it's the desktop card thrown on an MXM so I guess it makes sence it wouldn't support lvds(has this been used tried in eDP systems too?) it's too bad the embedded version hasn't been scene in the wild perhaps it includes LVDS. I guess Vega is right around the corner maybe they will have credible MXM 3 offerings(Nvidia prices are absurd $630 for a 1060 mobile from china!) -
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
Sweet who is the manufacturer here?
Also as for the RX480 MXM were any of the systems it was tried in eDP?Last edited: Mar 5, 2017 -
Can we expect it to be proper 3.1b like the Quadro ? If this design is final I think unified heatsink machines would be out of luck due to extensive mods and the old legacy machines would need to mod their heatsinks too Still a good progress but ofc the pricing / availability would factor in a lot since direct comparison it to the Magnus Zotac 1070 for those who need a 1070 without mods with the MSI's 1070N cards.
GeCube, A Gigabyte subsidary.
RX480 ??? I think we have answers on the prev page. The M17x R4 has eDP. Need to hack the vBIOS which I guess no modder would be interested while the final outcome would be just meh.
Plus the TDP/Powerpull to Perf. is a downgrade vs 980M or 1060, Waiting on the E9xxx series embedded 95W revised 480 MXM seems like eternal considering the space that AMD has amidst of the Nvidia dominance. I don't even expect the Vega to come in MXM3.0 designs, the TDP would be so high also the R&D costs plus MXM licensing while they already have a ton of work to do with the Ryzen and Ryzen 3/5 on the desktop end plus Mobile Ryzen, Also the XBox Scorpio and Unnamed PS4 Pro successor. But I DO wish to see that happen..Last edited: Mar 5, 2017dzpliu likes this. -
There's a small Vega rumoured alongside big Vega (I agree the 4096sp 250-ish watt card already demoed isn't going into MXM - just as the biggest Nvidia chip of each gen doesnt) - the "mobile=desktop" line was convenient for while it lasted
-
If we can test it on a GT72 and it passes ? I will buy it
As simple as that, and will use this MSI till the end of it's life, then wont buy an MSI again for their treatment

The layout is certainly compatible, but AFAIK it only supports eDP connection.
IIRC, the M6700 mainboard came with two video connectors, the LVDS was used in case of the standard TN screen (Nvidia Optimus configuration) and eDP in case of the RGB-LED screen (and thus no Optimus).
I'd certainly like to upgrade mine with P5000 as it's a downclocked 1070 GPU, but with a standard MXM layout so it's an easy upgrade from my current 980M.
The hopeful of keeping MXM 3.0b alive thread!
