but that's not a possible outcome. no one wants to buy a GPU and spend months building a heatsink before they can play....probably by then the GPU is outdated.

Is it all quiet on the AMD front? Or there any news, I cannot seem to find the Rx 480 based embedded ones anywhere. Hopefully AMD stop beating around the bush and release Vega on MXM, I want at least 10 years out of this Clevo

There has been no talk of Vega on MXM and we still have to wait for the RX5xx refresh before embedded Polaris mxm become meaningfully available for embedded applications

Processors have made very little progress in the last 5 or 6 years. Meanwhile gpus have made massive leaps forward, especially in performance per watt.
My m15x is a perfect example of why mxm gpus are amazing. That laptop is almost 7 years old and with a realistic cpu overclock and an mxm 965m it has no problem keeping up with any other laptop from the 965m generation. If my 2013 alienware 17 r1 with a 1070 can perform on par with the newer 1070 laptops why would I spend 3000$ cad when I could get 90% of that performance for 1200$ cad.
I paid 200$ for my 965m and now my m15x can run everything at the same level as the laptop you have.

    http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/10467328/fs/10456575/fs/12284138/fs/6291527

Pay close attention to the physics scores here. My alienware 17 with 4930mx is only 25% faster than my old m15x. So the final gaming performance when they have the same gpu is very close. Then look at my aw17 r1 with 770m vs 1070. That's the same laptop with 1500$ CAD invested. My general rule of thumb is to keep my upgrades to half the new equivalent laptop value. Maybe I just love making old things new again, but mxm is why I have these laptops.

Low = high, PC = console, frames don't matter.... I told myself that 15 years ago when I had rubbish hardware playing slideshows. Then I got a taste of the greener grass and realised it was just a flavour of confirmation bias I was experiencing and how wrong I was.

Your concern for how I spend my money is flattering, but irrelevant

Did you read the whole post?

See "Laptops rarely last longer than 4 years and by then its time for a full cpu/hardware upgrade."

I wonder if he talk about BGA machines :D Maybe 4 years with a replacement MB? :p

He's not wrong. Today, LGA 1151 is already nearly 2 years old. Intel is not AMD, we cannot expect them to keep one socket for half a decade. I'll be surprised if by next year LGA 1151 is outdated.

just watch a 870M/970M vs 1070 comparison and you will get it. The CPU that was used for those laptops (4700/4800MQ or 3630QM that can be swapped with a 3820QM) still does a great job :)

    and pretty expansive and annoying:
sell it, stay without a laptop, buy another one, reconfigure it again.
This can be done easily in 15 min by switching MXM's..

It probably won't be dropping in price. Besides, if you're coming from the 980DT then the 1060 will provide no increase since the 1060 is pretty much a 980DT. The 1070 is still good.

Which laptop is it going into?

I will sell my 970M at it's correct price after getting the new gpu (250'ich USD +shipping) unlike some people who want to sell gpu 1000$ lol
It's going to replace my little 970M, OC'd the 1060 can be interesting..

The current trend for mobile gpus is the price stays pretty high even when its outdated. Most likely due to rarity or being niche items. My oc'd 1070 is doing well.

If we go back to topic, the main problem of everyone here is that we still can't buy the GeCube 1070.. they didn't answer to my mail.

You can see that especially in prices right before they run out of them, the 580Ms were selling for over $1000 at one point before they were all gone.

The rule is generally that laptops with MXM are stuck with a direct replacement part only or parts that were available as options when sold. Being able to upgrade is the exception (even before BGA was widespread)

Which means people who buy expensive laptops when the GPU dies ex warranty are faced with parting a non working thousands of dollars laptop for peanuts, or bending over for that kind of price to get it working again.

Hopefully aftermarket boards like Gecube for the rx480 and 1070 become a widespread thing and they push MXM prices down with the competition. The rx480 was listed for sale for as low as usd$200 in bulk which is unheard of for midrange MXM.

Depends on the card. You can physically put the card into the port and the machine may even boot up, but if there's no viable bios/vbios for it, if there's no heatsink that will fit, or extensive DIY mods need to be made to the heatsink (a significantly more involved process than just plugging in a new card and adding thermal compound where errors are costlier) or any number of other small things go wrong, then it won't work. Not to say no one has got something like that running, but it's not in any way the rule.

Not to my knowledge. There were some small exceptions like the m17xr1 could only run 4870s and the r2 can't run beyond 680m because of its lack of uefi support and the e.o.l. of rgb led displays. Anything with uefi should be capable of up to the 9xx series. 10xx series if they also have edp displays.

Probably not "stuck" but I am still peeved that my Alienware 18 can't upgrade past the nVidia GTX 980m SLI. I would have loved to have put 1070 SLI (or even 1080 SLI) into it. But it was a various host of things that prevented "Pascal" from going into an AW18.

I guess "top out at" would be a better word that "stuck." Since with MXM and sockets we always have "choice" just not always the choices we would prefer.

As expected, the Avenger Mark II runs Pascal without a hitch (FDI/Optimus-SG mode), She's still a beast after all these years, Ivy Bridge and the older Alienwares are really amazing, Optimus is crud but the capability of running the Pascal with all these Ngreedia Shenanigans it managed.

Feel ashamed Azor, ruined the brand to an abomination..!!

All three items seem to use the same photo showing N17E-Q3-A1 which is P4000M so at least we know that P4000M uses the same MXM format as the Maxwell cards did (so I can upgrade my M6700 perhaps). Hopefully, P5000M as well.

They are super expensive at the moment to consider such upgrade, though.
