I considered that too, and I can't decide which is most likely true but prior to release gecube did extensive testing including sending out test units what would be the point if it was just the same as what they sent zotac?

I wonder if there is a teardown down of the erx480... Gecube makes the rx480 MXM offered on Taobao... -
I don't have direct infos
I see that gecube/zotac cards are very similar.
May be that gecube cards for laptops need a different power management? They need to test that aspect? -
Do you know a review of zotac erx480?

325-350$ is the proper price for a 1060 ^^ (I think). more than that and it's not correct.
-
it seems that you have a deep misunderstanding about china, i used to think china is a very 3rd world country until i went to china.
you should go there and see for yourselves. There are some parts of china that are relatively poorer, but i don't think there is any country in the world that is fully developed.
and if you want to talk about piracy problems, tell me about thepiratebay, torrents, they arent made by the chinese.
So what's your point? well im not rich enough to keep switching out to the new models. -
i'm just hoping the gecube 1070 can be found for $4-500. Thats already pushing it for my wife haha
sasuke256 likes this. -
sure, i never said it's a 3rd country world^^
I said and i quote "suing a company that i based on china is almost impossible".
You took a single example of software piracy saying it's not there, but you omitted the most powerful one that is WIDELY spread there, counterfeiting of electronics, and other manufactured objects ^^
As a matter of fact, a lot of investigation-journalists covered that topic^^
Every country has issues trying to limit the importation of false copies of a lot of products which are copyrighted in Europe
facts are facts ^^ copyrights doesn't work there.
ref 1 : http://www.businessinsider.com/most-counterfeit-goods-are-from-china-2013-6
(there are a lot more refs, but that's not the topic^^)ChanceJackson likes this. -
That is true, but in the case of clevo/msi/gecube/nvidia here, counterfeiting is almost non-existent, no one in the world currently can counterfeit CPU/ GPU.
They are working on copyright issues, probably going to take a few years before it is actually in shape. (i used to enjoy watching "free" movies in china, but there are lesser resources now)
Most of the counterfeit products are sold within china.
You can always ask ebay to remove listing for copyrighted materials, even Taobao will punish and remove shops for copyrighted materials.
The whole point here is that Nvidia gave a reference design, Clevo/MSI refused to use it so that you will buy their newer models. Isn't the whole idea of this gaming laptop is to be able to swap out GPU? or else why shouldnt i just get a BGA laptop instead?Last edited: May 15, 2017triturbo, ChanceJackson, Aroc and 2 others like this. -
Totally agree, never said anything that claims otherwise ^^
I just corrected your statements and said that EVEN IF there is copyright infringement, nothing will be done about it ^^ (unlike what you said about zotac suing them^^).
Fortunately, copyrights are respected in that field ^^

So far there's no Reference design of the Pascal chips except the Quadro standard. The 1060 MSI is not a reference design, please check my old post, The Zotac / GeCube is not reference design there is significant difference as I pointed out. Aetina too. I thought the same that Nvidia faked when we got hold on the Mobile Pascal Quadro first look. But It's always like that because Quadro MXMs are always standards the Quadro proves that, except one Maxwell MSI workstation machine which had a 980 GTX without reference.
As @Papusan said the Nvidia Pascal Chips are left to OEMs to make their own design with TDP locks, thus they can build their own specced versions. My theory - This all happened due to the "experiment" that we all know when Maxwell powered Clevo 980 GTXs and MSI 980 GTXs MXMs came with offering true desktop performance and the Clevo's 980 200W outperforms even the desktop GTX 980 chip & then what happened ? People rushed to them with MSI and Clevo machines for more power while the old standards and strategy was x70 desktop couterpart used to be x80 on mobile realm, GTX 970 -- GTX 980M. And some got literally backstabbed by MSI's fake upgrade promise which led to the demise of GT80 machine and a ton load of others as well who were promised for 2 gens Pascal and Volta, while a few machines were on Kepler from there to Maxwell to Pascal, 2 gens & Clevo machines which shipped with those were also left in dust (870DM, Irony is it can be upgraded with an MSI 1070N instead of a Clevo chip) due to the huge changes in the design causing the HS issues, again Clevo never promised like MSI did.
Now here we are Pascal true desktop chips with retarded MXM chip sizes, obv since the reference was thrown out of window where the market has higher margins as opposed to limited Quadro market & what happened is exactly what Nvidia wanted - More purchases due to significant performance boost and closing the gap between the mobile and desktop realms offering full cash raking fest with the OCed Maxwell - Paxwell a.k.a Pascal with super Secureflash type aids on BIOS - Voltage & TDP locks.
AMD ? No idea what are they up to, busy rebranding the old chips and consolol fest, even so now the Xbone Scorpio is also a rebrand lul. Also btw thanks to Alienware for leaving things out and went full BGA retarded, leaving these 2 big OEMs at the battle of crown for DTRs.
Sure the Clevo and MSI could have built one without all these ridiculous shaped GPUs but why would they ? They need cash and if they built a low-end sub 150W chips, because - 1080s need 200W to perform at that level like desktop AIB cards or ref designs, and other OEM would take advantage of this Standard MXM route and push the higher TDP more powerful potent chips, even BGAd hw can do that.. Plus Clevo could have stuck to the old 200W shape & MSI the same like the GT80 chips but nope !! And they are pushing to close the gap with this campaign, Well atleast we are not getting BGAd, but huge list of disadvantage outweigh the socketed advantage here - Price this is real issue here extreme extortion prices / Upgradeability / Re-sale value defeats the purpose by a huge scale.
So many have thought to leave the DTR game that these OEMs are playing, One good news is Clevo is going to stick to the current format for Volta as well. Lets see how that unfolds. I suspect HBM will be used anytime soon on Nvidia end, AMD needs it due to GCN.
Say thanks to the mass populace ignorance, Figures speak for themselves, be it BGA, Winblows or <any> that's how the world rolls...Thanks to them we now have full monopoly and the implications of that, Transgressions are being absorbed by consumers knowingly or unknowingly.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Stop buying sh*t and stop buying soldered garbage..Force them to make a Standard for the NB consumers just like Desktops.

both the msi 1070 mxm version and the 1060 mxm work perfectly in the alienware 17r1. I currently have a zotac standard form factor 1070 out of a en1070k mini pc that fits perfectly into the 17r1 with no modifications to the frame just to the heatsink. This 1080 will be a different story but I got a good deal and I'll be buying a tornado f5 anyways if I can not get it to work.

you'll probably need a jumper wire to bypass the EC like on the MSI 1070.
an MSI 1070 won't fit because the tab on the right side clashes with the M.2 slot. There's no point in a 1060 if you're coming from a 980DT. A 1070 is the better option if you can find one like the gecube or aetina models.sasuke256 likes this. -

I have a p170sm-a and have been waiting this entire time for something to show up. I saved for quite a long time to get this machine, and didn't ever factor in being abandoned on maxwell. With things how they are now and hindsight 20/20, should of just got a bga trash book, took the other $1500 and put together a desktop. -
I hear you on that one Eindru....
I'm in the same boat with my Clevo p150sm-a. I'm not hating on the 980m, it has some power, but the lack of GPU upgrade after that is very disappointing. Now I have to buy a new machine to run VR... buzzkill -

On 2nd look isn't the mounting hole that secures the card to the mobo also in the wrong place? Not insurmountable but thought I would point it outbennyg likes this. -
A MSI 1070 being bigger than 3.0b standard size should physically fit with some case dremelling. If gecube can work out their issue their 1070 is drop in and it's apparently been tested on clevos. Many SM clevos have been upgraded with a 1060.
Any other card is unknown in clevos specifically because clevo have the ec thing where if the card is not giving a specific thermal read out it triggers an auto shutdown. AFAIK no clevo has been successfully upgraded with a zotac etc (and I've not heard anything upgraded with an aetina)
If the SM-A heatsink is the same as the woosy two pipe core setup in P170EM/P370EM gpu heatsinks you may have to add some extra cooling somehow to unleash it's full power. The Kepler 680M at ~950mhz in p170em doesnt give power draw read in hwinfo (like 980M does) but by my rough calcs (and trying to take into account CPU throttling back to 2.6ghz in excess of approx 210W wall draw) at around 120-130W in furmark its mid 70s with liquid metal on full fans. A 150W TDP card would overwhelm the cooling I thinkLast edited: May 17, 2017Eindru likes this. -
Again, it won't because of the tab on the right is clashing with the M.2 slot....and that's if you did dremel out a that portion of the frame.
