Xenforo needs emoticon reactions, a "like" for that post is ambiguous.

    In this case; :vomit:

I had a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that board space saving would see bga soldered gpu/hbm to thin'n'bendys and not as mxm due to its lower motherboard area requirement. Until Vega's innately horrible power consumption was revealed anyway, that must be downclocked and undervolted pretty heavily.

Vega has a pretty good perf/watt, but AMD had to set a high clocks and voltages to be able to fight Pascals. In power save mode Vega loses a few percent of its performance but power consumption drops by 20-30%.

Thanks for proving me wrong I was actually looking for a picture of its guts, shame though the Vega 56 is a good performer once you tweak it a little in the control panel love mine on the desktop but I was shocked to see them putting it in a laptop, RIP once that thing starts to spit some heat on that soldering work probably last 2 years at best of heavy use.

    hi lads I own a GT7S-6QE it comes with a GTX 980M 4GB g-sync.... it just shorted....
two main questions for you pros:
1/ is it possible to identify the faulty component on the GTX980M ( i got a hot air soldering station) and how?
2: I plan to buy a 1060 from msi (MS-1W0U1) with g-sync, will i be able to keep g-sync functionnality with a MSI g-sync card?

Many many thanks in advance lads

if MSI releases an 1170 that has the same layout as their 1070 then that would be a no brainer to buy.

Does anyone have Rx 480 or Rx 580 (Notebook) vBIOS? I have the WX 7100, detected in BIOS and drivers installed without issue on my M17x R4 but the GPU wont initiate in Windows for some stupid reasons, I think its a vBIOS issue, already tried two variants of the WX 7100 vBIOS, got both of them if anyone wants.
    015.050.000.000.000951 and 015.050.000.001.019413

Is there perhaps a way to get the WX 7100 to be recognised as a Rx 480 by editing .inf file in the driver?

Contacting just about anyone now LOL, I managed to acquire one more WX 7100 vBIOS also different one from the ones I have, this is the strangest issue I ever seen in my life, Windows installs drivers and detects GPU but the GPU is not connected according to AMD control panel yet its still recognised by the system as being connected LOL

The only issue is the RX 480 that is built into that machine is 4GB vRAM. I dont think there is a RX 480 machine out there with 8GB. At least I havent seen it.

You have the 120hz 3D panel on your R4?

Rx 580 vBIOS would work the best of course.
I have LVDS display and I set it to SG Enduro mode for the WX7100.
If the LVDS was not compatible its strange that it would boot fine and still show a display

Ah I see, I heard that the WX 7100 only works with eDP signal, right now your Intel HD is providing the signal to the display under SG mode if I understand things correctly. How much was your WX 7100?

Correct, perhaps there might be an issue with Enduro and the WX 7100?
The WX 7100 was about 320 dollars from Taobao, I used Bhiner to buy it, must say it was easier than I expected except for transfering the money to them, that was a bit complicated at first since you cannot use PayPal for such large sums.

Much better than ebay @ 600

Could very well be an issue with SG mode, seemed to work ok on the M18xR2 according to another member though. @Rengsey R. H. Jr. might be able to give some insight

The WX 7100 and Rx 480 works in the Alienware M17x R4 without problems, the problem was AMD drivers and Windows 8.1, because AMD no longer supports W8.1 the drivers naturally wont support it either, I been getting away with it on my desktop by using W7 drivers however this time around with the WX 7100 I have not been this lucky, flashing the WX 7100 8GB to Rx 480 4GB and trying out the last W8.1 drivers AMD released solved all speculations for me. The GPU works, the temperatures are registered, voltage everything is registered, control panel opens just fine too.
However these last drivers AMD released are unstable and the worst of crimson releases with lackcluster OpenGL performance.

I ran some benchmarks, Unigine Heaven is pointless to run on AMD hardware so I did 3DMark 11 and FireStrike. It seems the GPU is a bit faster than the 1060N 6GB that I had in my P150EM

    3DMark 11
    https://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/12858638
    Graphics Score = 16 179
    Physics Score = 8 100
    Combined Score = 7 105
    3DMark FireStrike
    2018.07.24 FireStrike Score.PNG
    Graphics Score = 11 252
    Physics Score = 9 054
    Combined Score = Error
GPU-Z correctly reports the GPU but with half the actual VRAM
    2018.07.24 Rx 480.PNG

I will be reinstalling the laptop with either Windows 7 or God forbid Windows 10, and reflash the vBIOS for WX 7100 and report back.

Why the Win10 hate? Is it the bloatware? The amount of garbage you have to disable and unistall? Surely not the shady business practices or Cortana? It even comes with the windows store!

For my newest P377SM-A, I might consider going back to win 8.1 honestly. I like Win 10 alot after fixing everything, but the only advantage of it over 8.1 for me is the Windows store and the GUI

    Oh and DX12

Lol. The hatred towards windows 10 cracks me up. Though I do respect your opinion, the performance lost is likely due to the built in antivirus and malware protection that isn't in windows 8 and 7. And windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Meaning if I want to protect my cryptocurrency and online banking, I sure as hell cant keep them on windows 7. Windows 10 is just a prettier version of windows 7. It's what windows 8 should have been right from the start. The app store on windows 8 I find far more annoying and the fact I have to hunt for the "shut down" command every time I use windows 8/8.1 is enough to make me hate it. Dx12 and priority updates/security with compatibility for all my games means its windows 10 or nothing... and I'm fine with that.

Btw I worked for Microsoft when windows 7 launched. Trust me, it had just as many issues of not more in a shorter span of time. Polishing an OS has historically been a nightmare for years.

I went back to Windows 8.1.

I'll be going back to 10 in the future, maybe once LTSB for 1809 is released.

10 with startisback and winaero tweaker works well for me.

8.1 is nice though, I'm just always switching is all. 7 is the one I always used to go back to, but I stopped finally.

Windows 10 requires allot of tweaking, I personally use ClassicShell and Aero Glass in Win8.1 and 10
Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 is also very handy alongside winaero.
I also recommend Chocolatey package manager to people who are tired of reinstalling programs one by one.

Well at least my GPU works now, I would have preferred to stay with W8.1 though as there less work to have it run nice and smooth compared to W10

Does anyone know any good Polaris vBIOS editor??
I am trying to change the 4GB to 8GB in vBIOS, something else I noticed is the TDP set on these cards, the WX7100 mobile are all 75W TDP while the Rx 480's are all 70W TDP with a max Wattage of 85 set.
This is worse than what is rated on them such as WX7100 being 130W TDP or Rx 480 being 100W TDP or even 150W TDP on some.

Great news everyone, I have at last managed to make the WX7100 8GB behave itself in my Alienware M17x R4. After flashing a bazillion vBIOS's from mismatch Rx 480 4GB to other WX7100 versions from HP, Dell to Lenovo? and thanks to dzpliu he gave me an Eurocom Rx 480 8GB vBIOS which not just works in the WX7100, it works REALLY good.

Sadly I do not have access to Polaris BIOS Editor 1.6.7 so I cannot reliably edit the TDP limit on these without purchasing the 55 dollar Polaris BIOS Editor 2.2 which I am not sure will even work.

My effectively Rx 480 8GB now runs, is detected, shows voltages, shows power usage, temperatures, it shows everything however fan speed must be controlled manually or via software and a friend of mine recommended HWiNFO for Alienware, this program has too many issues its a good alternative to AIDA64 but that is about it.
I found SpeedFan to be vastly better at controlling the fanspeed automatically, its lightweight and works with Dell and Alienware and can even control the fans separately just remember to enable the Dell extension in options and setup the profile manually.

If you want to have a Rx 480 or WX7100 in your Dell/Alienware, I recommend using the Rx 480 Eurocom 8GB vBIOS which is named Rx 480M 8GB vBIOS - 015.050.000.000.000000 TDP70W Samsung - EUROCOM in the vBIOS zip I have included, remember to use ATIFlash and if you want to flash WX7100 to Rx 480 you need to do so through CMD and not through the GUI version.
Remember to check your memory, I would not recommend flashing Hynix vBIOS on a Micron memory GPU, the best memory is Samsung and Micron, those are highest quality and can be clocked quite good as well.

I like to thank everyone who helped me solving this issue and I hope whoever in the future has an easier job.
I am no expert at these things in fact I am quite a n00b, I am not familiar with vBIOS editing or committing to complicated solder jobs and flashing vBIOS's directly with special tools, so if I can do it you can do it.
Also I reverted from Windows 10 to 7, holy smokes this operating system is more difficult to get to behave than Linux, it ruined my overclocked laptop screen by forcing the generic Intel drivers on me and frankly made this entire problem solving with the GPU ten times more difficult than it needed to be from all memory leakage BSOD's.

Gives me hope of it working in my ranger when ever I get it back online. Rx 480 would be perfect for retroarch w/ vulkan supported cores.

You are using the 60hz panel as well? LVDS?

Any Radeon driver works with the Rx 480 vBIOS frm Eurocom I tested quite a few just to be sure.
The Pro Drivers for WX 7100 lacks a lot in features like ReLive and Wattman which is why I attempted to flash Eurocom.

Currently I am using however the latest drivers released by AMD, 18.7.1, W10 and W7 works and I have a feeling that I can actually get it to work n W8.1 too if I am stubborn enough.

Correct, the GPU runs with SG or Intel GPU, my monitor is LVDS which is great news for a lot of us because that means we can use RGB backlit panels, those look WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than anything eDP has to offer at the moment for 17.3 inch screen sizes.
And you can overclock it, if you do not run Windows 10 and use edited Intel drivers, I managed to get my panel to 75Hz which means if you put enough work into it you can enable FreeSync, 33 to 75Hz using Custom Resolution Utility

The VBIOS is from Gecube though, but who cares :p
