Save your money and get a desktop, you will have far fewer issues and way more potential for overclocking, upgrades etc. Just keep a cheap laptop for whenever you need something portable.

Unless you want to be able to actually do something that requires a bit of power somewhere other than your desk

    ---

The history of the 1070 cards is extensively covered in this thread (search function?)

MSI 1070 is robust, danishblunt is talking total rubbish about stuff he's got no experience with. Multiple people have power modded them using coolane's vbios edit tool and it handles 200W and over without issue as it has a very strong vrm.

I stopped at 200W because of the mxm slot spec, I was already over platform power limit for the pair of 1070s in the old unit I was using (coolane's P870DM and falkentyne's GT73 were single card users and pushed 230W and over), and >200W is up in the region of diminishing returns there is very little performance improvement for the added power.

The green pcb gecube had a weak vrm with components missing and got recalled, as so many blew up. Eurocom sells a version with a revised vrm setup but still is iffy, sometimes sell with a 90W vbios and others 115W.

If this card has a decent 8 phase core vrm and SLI port that's great. Finally, two whole years after initial 1070 mobile release! But if it is using desktop chips it will be clocked a little higher with the extra SM disabled (1920 vs 2048) so will be a bit less efficient.

Welp, desktop it is, but I'm keeping this P377SM-A incase I happen to stumble across $600 down the road. It would be nice if the MSI and GeCube cards where compatible with each other in SLI, would make life easier and cheaper

That is true, in which case I suggest they get something like a P870 or other socketed machine, but since @Grant B Gibson mentioned a desktop as an option he may as well go for one imo.

Also, I've had a bad experience with P870's and there isn't one in my budget on the market, and I don't have the patience to wait. I'll likely end up shoving a 1070 in the P377 when I get the chance, but desktop time!

Edit: Planned specs are in my signature

The MSI 1070 uses these VRM's.

    http://www.ti.com/product/CSD87350Q5D
    http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/csd87350q5d.pdf

They are rated up to 25 amps at 90% efficiency. Absolute maximum load=40 amps.
If each phase is 25a * 2 (50amps), then that's 400 amps maximum allowed. And that means the MSI 1070 can safely draw 200 amps while maintaining 90% efficiency.

That's assuming there are 5 (5+1) phases rather than 6. I believe the MSI uses FIVE phases for the GPU and ONE for the memory, making it 5+1.

So at 40*2 maximum amps phase, 80 * 5 =400a (watts?) absolute maximum.
And at 20*2 amps=40 amps per phase, that's 40*5=200 amps. I don't know how this works, but if if watts= amps * volts, then at 1.0v * 200 amps=200W operation at 90% efficiency.

    You guys get the point.

Desktop is great for static positions but if you travel semi regularly its a wasted investment.

That being said I may get one in the future once I am settled in, but for now the Ranger when its back up and running will do fine. Quite interested in this new 1070 from Gecube as well but can always fall back to the MSI 1070. Prices should come down after the next GPU's release and that will likely be around the time I am back on my feet.

Then I really recommend getting the cheapest possible Alienware laptop with a six core + hyper threading and attach their amplifier to it, and get the best of both worlds, because the MXM thing has gone down the sh!tter.

    $2000+(New AW)+ $300 (AGA) +$300 (1070) vs $200 (Motherboard Replacement) + $600 (1070 MXM)

Although this is just his own case, I agree with you for the most part unless you need extremely raw performance

Nah, the new alienwares are overheating out of the box. Im not interested in them anyways. I really liked that they moved most of the I/O to the rear but I have no desire for the Amplifier. Rather just get a proper desktop and have my Ranger for when I am away.

The only other option I am interested in is the Acer Helios 500 AMD, but even that is a moot point if I get my Ranger running the way I would like. Who knows, too many variables in my life at the moment to cement anything at the moment.

Exact same MOSFETs as the entire P870 lineup's CPU VRM which is a doubled 4 phase scheme. Vcore = 4x2x40A = 320A peak, 160A at 90% efficiency. Which is so overspec for quads (a 130A ICCMax has never tripped on mine) they didn't change it for the 6 core P870TM and it still looks quite ready to handle 8 cores.

And which youknowwho also thinks is rubbish.

The newer design of gecube's 1070 was said to be tested by some clevo users and the card still didnt function well. the cards are meant for mining i think, that is why they do not die when used by mining motherboards (one of the reseller said so) .

Makes sense. Ethereum miners underclock and undervolt the GPU core and overclock the memory to maximize hash rate and minimize power draw.

Works fine in LVDS mode, because I only have LVDS screen I can only test it as such, I have no interest in eDP because there is no RGB LED one.
iGPU works fine too, Enduro works as well surprisingly. Runs in W7 and W10. But there is no automatic fan control, you have to use software solutions like HWiNFO or SpeedFan

Because of BIOS signature checker I am having a seriously hard time to get the modified vBIOS to work in any of the systems, the BIOS checker is also preventing me from using newer drivers in W8.1 which is a bummer.
I am working on trying to unlock all the ReLive features etc in Crimson by editing drivers but so far I only managed to unlock a few minor things, its turning into a really painful experience to be honest and I find myself using my desktop more and more for gaming because it just bloody works...
Although I had more issues getting my GeForce GTX 1060N to work in my Clevo P150EM, a lot of driver trickery to just get it to install, card would not work in the Alienware M17x R4 though, no idea why and I am not about to find out why either, but its confirmed it works in eDP mode.

Depends on the game, and heavily depends on what vBIOS is being used. The stock Clevo 980M vBIOS is crap, but you can get considerably more performance using Prema's vBIOS mod as it removes the throttling cancer from it (though it will run hotter). I imagine the same is true for the AMD GPU and what vBIOS that is running.

I can post a few benchmarks with my 980M if you like, name a few games if you'd like me to test them as well.

Specifaclly, GTA V and Rise of the Tomb Raider and a few of the COD's are all I really play besides indie games, and theres already a millions benchs of the 980M, but not specifcally the Prema VBIOS
    Might consider the W7170M

Alright, managed to find a sucker for the P377SM-A Config in my sig who bought it for $600, and i just found a Ranger (4800MQ 770M 32GB RAM 1TB SSD 3D Screen) for literally the same price, it feels good to be a gangsta!

Don't have GTA V, but Rise of The Tomb Raider will run on the Very High Preset with SMAA at between 55 and 58FPS average on the benchmark with no overclock. I only have some of the older Call of Duty games (World at War and Black Ops) but both of those are no issue for the 980M. BF1 will run anywhere from 60 to 75FPS with my custom settings which are somewhere just below Ultra on everything. My CPU will be giving me a considerable FPS boost in BF1 though as its overclocked to 4.5GHz.

This is a dirty Firestrike run with stuff running in the background: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/28265196?

My best one so far is this (though I wouldn't game at these clocks): https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/27989913?

I'm quite happy with the 980M's performance for the games I own, though I would like to upgrade to something else relatively soon. Possibly an MSI 1070 unless by some miracle the 2000 series GPUs are compatible with the P870DM-G. I've also thought about buying a second 980M and going for SLI, but i'm not sure its worth it considering the 980M has a pretty weak VRM. To overclock much further you'd need to modify it. Should be pretty reliable on stock clocks as long as you use decent thermal pads.

The new GeCube 1070's have just launched, standard form factor and SLI connector, I would recommend checking those out

I think I might just end up a W7170M or likely a modded M6100 like last time for the AW 17

Part of me wants to try one out to see if I can make it blow up, but my brain is telling me to get an MSI 1070 and call it a day.

As painful and as stubborn of a fanboy as I am, no the Rx 480 CANNOT perform better than the 980M, sure it could if AMD let me edit the vBIOS and get away with it, can I? No.
To make matters more insulting to me as a long customer to AMD, none, and I mean NONE of their mobile GPU's APART from the few exclusives actually get all the nice software features AMD packs into their drivers like ReLive, Enhanced Sync and Frame Rate Limit just to mention a few.

I been struggling quite a lot with the WX 7100 / Rx 480 for weeks now, trying to figure out how to bypass signature checker using methods people use for the desktop card to no avail, tried all 3 operating systems from W7, 8.1 to W10 to no avail, tried almost 15 different drivers to no avail even going back to the first driver released for the Rx 480 which would only give me a blackscreen with modded vBIOS.

I resorted to the last unfavourable decision of just brute overclock in MSI Afterburner, I really despise this method on any mobile AMD GPU because firstly AMD GPU are heinously unstable using MSI Afterburner, even WattMan is preferable but the problem with the GeCube Rx 480 vBIOS is that the overclock is limited to 1100 MHz on the core which is probably for a reason I am assuming since I am having serious issues with stability as expected using MSI Afterburner and going over 1200 MHz on the core.
You cannot touch the memory, if anything the memory might actually be running too fast but even as I tried to turn down the memory I got BSOD that may just be the fault of MSI Afterburner though.

Now with my now old GeForce GTX 1060N 6GB I had a FireStrike Graphics score of 11 837 which is a respectable score for a 80W TDP card.

Arrrrbol posted his score for his 980M that was heavily overclocked and with Prema vBIOS had a score of 11 705 which just BARELY comes close to the 1060 and you will bet that thing is thirsty for power probably draws over 160W in total on that card.
Now I also did some benchmarking on my Rx 480 without an overclock first which scores a pathetic graphics score of 9 843, this is just bad. Also note I never OC my 1060 because I never found a reason for it.
Then I did an overclock on the Rx 480 with 1206MHz on the core from 1050MHz and memory stays at its usual 1750MHz, I received a FireStrike graphics score of 10 904

But you may be asking, surely the card did not get THAT good with just 150MHz extra on the core?? You are right, what really did give the card boost was me giving it +45% on the power limit, this card is REALLY power starved, and I mean really power starved hence why its giving me BSOD all the time, its a Rx 480 usually almost 150W TDP card compressed to 75W, crazy no?
In FireStrike the Rx 480 has very big problems maintaining its core speed constantly at 100% use, it will fluctuate between 980MHz to 1200MHz on my overclock usually keeping it at 1050MHz most of the time meaning most of my overclock is doing is just generating heat and not really any speed improvements.

Despite the insane power draw of 145W on the entire card and 125W on the core during FireStrike, the card maintains a respectable 75 degrees Celsius max on full fan speed, and the 145W power draw is not constant since the card is just incapable of reaching its highest overclock speed.
Would you rather have a GTX 1060 that just has 2GB less vRAM, maybe painful driver installation process but what you get is all the features nVidia gives you like FastSync or GeForce Experience, stability and a card that does not run at 145W nor will it run very hot because after all it might draw 100W in total on the card itself, imagine the overclock headroom and people have actually vBIOS flashed it using tools to get some insane speeds on these cards (MSI cards are only ones that take such VRM punishment!)

Do yourself a favour, buy a 1060 or 1070, the 1060 is same price as the Rx 480 on Taobao, this is coming from an AMD fanboy but even I will admit it when I see a better card, AMD has sabotaged themselves in the mobile sector, there no reason to buy AMD for laptops anymore, maybe for desktop but not for laptops.

Also at random times I have memory BSOD with either WX 7100 or Rx 480 vBIOS in either Windows 7 or Windows 10, this is when the card is idling, no idea why it happens might be an Enduro issue also I tried multiple PowerXpress Settings in the BIOS, these are Enduro settings you can read about them in more depth here

Alrighty, W7170M it is, as thats the best MXM B card I can find for just under $200 unless some has a better idea? I'm considering a 970M if I can find it cheap enough, but man do I ever just want shove in a GPU and call it a day.
A shame the WX7100 is incredibly gimped, but again, its not meant to be a gaming GPU, a sad sight considering the 5000M and 6000M series is still very relevant compared to the 200M and 400M series

Unfortunately AMD can't compete with Pascal for perf/watt and because of that they seem to have lost all interest in mobile graphics (and gaming in general). Hopefully they will have something competitive again when 7nm comes along, but it's a given nVidia are working on that too. They also really need to ditch GCN as the basis for their GPU architectures - even when it came out it was worse than Terascale when compared with the competition at the time, it's the same kind of rut the CPU division were stuck in after Bulldozer.

Sorry to disappoint but AMD really did have some great mobile GPU's in the past, the M290X was really their last attempt at one but even that one was barely 5% faster than a 7970M after all its the same card with some minor changes like better solder job.

The W7170M is barely faster than the 970M, worth it? Nah, why? Because you do not get gaming drivers AND listen, use Bhiner and buy yourself a sweet 1060 for 999 CNY, this is around 145 dollars, a better deal like this does not exist!
    https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?sp...l3qkkN&id=563574024658&ns=1&abbucket=3#detail

Look around Taobao for other offers if you want to but Bhiner + Taobao = cheap MXM cards, I believe that sample I gave you is an used model but a 1060 for 145 dollars is a deal not even I would look away from and its under your budget is it not? Use that 55 dollars to buy yourself a milkshake triple size because you will have time after installation to enjoy your new GPU instead of breaking your back trying to get it working. If you need help with the 1060 installation and drivers etc just contact me in the inbox, I know exactly what to do and if you are installing it in the M17x R4 or M17 R1 not sure which one you wanted to, they sell full copper heatsinks on eBay but cheaper on Taobao for the M17x R3/R4 and the M17 R1, these have full contact support for 1060 and 1070 form factor so there is no need to use a copper chip inbetween, if you cannot find them on either site I can give you a link.

Welp thanks for the helpful insight, but unfortunatly that price is for a 965M. The listed price in the description is around ~$370 for a 1060 not including Bhiner costs which would bring it to ~$450 or so, still a decent deal.

If I'm going Pascal, I'm going all out, whiping out the dremel and file, and getting a 1070. I'll llikely spend the $$$ upgrading my desktop or seeking out a M6700 for my colllection. I would like the copper heatsink link though

Have you looked into registry power play table editing of the power limit?

That is a thing that is only possible on the Vega and MSI Afterburner and Wattman already technically modify Power Play on Polaris, there is no difference from editing the Power Play table to overclocking in a software because neither changes the fundamental fact that the card is TDP limited through vBIOS and that will also not bring you the Crimson software features which I actually find myself using like the FPS counter, enhanced sync and frame rate limiter.
