Your motherboard will have both 40pin LVDS and 30pin eDP, these two white rectangles near the bottom (near the base of the screen as oriented in your notebook), the eDP is the shorter of the two. 30 pin (2 lane) is fine for 1080p 60Hz you will find literally a million options to choose from, but anything more will need a modded cable (if the panel has a 40pin/4 lane connector on it) - a guy called DARCODER has a thread here in NBR where he put a 40pin 4K panel in his P377SM and the procedure will be the same for my P370EM.

Efficiency gains look like making a 95W full polaris 10 a thing. Why do I feel the need to make sure gecube isn't putting cheap castoff 150W rev 1.0 chips in their mxm board...

    ...... que?

To try and remedy the confusion here's what I (via google translate) gather is the current state of things:

the Radeons will be standard MXM size without power connector:
    taobao seller "gecubegc" selling " RX480嵌入式显卡-MXM3.1规范、8G GDDR5显存、支持六通道输出", TDP 150W, for 3500 rmb / 700aud / 525usd
    taobao seller "gecubechina" selling " MXM RX48显卡-适用VR、8GD5显存、Type B尺寸、第三代插槽", TDP 150W, for 2000 rmb / 500aud / 300usd
E9550 appear to be identical specs in every way but with 95W TDP, eta 4Q16

And by prices on taobao listings to compare:
Clevo 1060 search turned up nothing?
    MSI 1060 (MS-1W0U1) are cheapest 3500rmb / 525 USD (standard size)
MSI 1070 non-SLI (MS-1W0V1) are cheapest 5000rmb / 750 USD (non standard) ** NB some listings say MSI 1070 out of stock so possible bait-and-switch pricing **
MSI 1070 SLI (MS-1W1V1) unsighted in the wild
edit: I can't find where I arrived at this distinction (other than the 1070 card that Eurocom put into P870DM in their youtube vid had no SLI connector) and can't remember where I saw a MS-1W1V1, so... this info may be total crap.

Clevo 1070 are 5500rmb / 1100USD (non standard size but with w/ SLI & power connector)
1080s so expensive & so far beyond retrofitting into std MXM as to be not worth investigating......
edit: actually the 1080 from the GT83VR 1080 SLI looks to be the same physical size as the MSI 1070 board and has no power connector either...?

Note these are raw RMB/yuan prices so don't get too excited: ex shipping, ex import duties, ex transaction fee, ex currency conversion fee, ex freight forwarder, ...

Edit: forgot of course the Clevo cards through RJtech: 1060 $489, 1070 $750, 1080 $1250

    Hmmm. I saw this:

At the 6-ish minute mark, a 1070 SLI GT73VR 6RE shows MS-1W0V1 rev1.0 peeking through a gap in the heatsink. The 1W0V1 rev "0B" in the Eurocom upgrade video was missing a SLI connector and I can't for the life of me find where I swear I saw someone hold a 1070 with SLI as "MS-1W1V1" up to the camera in a youtube video so that might be wrong

Anyway the other thing I noticed:

just near the end - is that a 1080 (MS-1V1B1) in the same physical size form factor as the MSI 1070 with SLI connector and NO POWER CONNECTOR??

Is it power gimped or are MSI putting 180W+ of special sauce through the MXM slot on that thing?

(Does this go in some other thread since none of this stuff is MXM 3.0b?...)

I recall someone mentioning that the MSI 1080 was 150W, although I'm not sure if they were referring to the single or SLI variant. On the plus side, this probably means that it'll fit into some older laptops like the P870DM.

Jeez, this stuff is such a mess now. Those 1080 from GT83VR looks like use MXM connector but they are physically different. Look how mounting holes are placed. They are kind of way around compare to the standard MXM, they are closer to the back off the card where on standard design mounting holes are closer to the connector. Power circuits with vrm's are now close to the connector not on the other side of a card which is probably good thing cos power traces are much, much shorter which is very good for power delivery, but besides that it's just... mehh. No words for this.

They are just proprietary MSI designs, Same as the GTX 980s with reduced TDPs 130W/150W ones. Similar approach, the only card that's MXM3.0b a.k.a 3.1 is the MSI 1060 and 1070, the latter has this tab protruding out and no SLI. Those GTX 1080 exist in 2 types (One is that what you saw without the power connector SLI'd and the other one which ships inside the GT73VR) and none of them will fit in any laptops except those ones which are they being shipped, Look at the core position and vrms, power phases you should forge a custom heatsink if one is planning to fit them into the 870DM. 7xxDM/ZM generation machines might not be able to use the 1060 either because of their unified Heatsink, And waste to invest in that x60 option imho, the 1070 won't be compatible due to the same reason.

All in all we are Doomed. I just expect a VEGA AMD MXM 3.0b at this point, that could go head to head with GTX1070, that's my last hope for the 3.0b machines, the RX485-490 upgraded ones seem quite good on paper & in theory according to leaks.

Where are you finding the msi 1070 card for sale and for that price? I am going to attempt this upgrade in my aw17 R1 with 120hz (edp) laptop and I noticed everyone talking about the EC check as well as the pricing here. I have a source for the card but its not this cheap and the EC check issue has me concerned.... I can always go back to my 980m but I feel I have a very good chance of this being successful. Dont worry about the physical limitations. This is not a concern. don't ask lol. But please do tell regarding the EC check and pricing concerns I have.

huh? according to notebookcheck the 1060 is like on par or even a bit faster than a 980N in games... and in benchmarks as well, but not as much

Maybe if you let me know what game they are specifically talking about...I might be able to give some insight by looking at some of the games I might have tried, but as to benchmarking....I'll never ever go with them against what I personally know as truth...

    Further Explanation:
Over clock vs over clock only!

Of course it loses at stock. This would be a 100% given and well know fact. Due to clocks alone.

Someone mentioned before that Clevo laptops with 1060 perform about 30% better than 980M.
Most other laptops however seem to have a cooling (or another) problem which makes 1060 run pretty much like 980M or lower than that.

It's an improper implementation of 1060, which is one of the reasons I'm waiting for AMD E9550.

aaaah, now that explains it @overclock vs. overclock :) well that makes total sense, considering the hardware and TDP package theyre designed for, the 980N 200W version would win any day of the week :)

those scores show a 50% OC 980M and a underclocked 1060N, AND not to mention the CPU is about 2-3 x as powerful on the 980M bench.

The comparison is complete utter bull.

Right, when the 1060 is running at 2,000Mhz+ it's much faster. Very few of my 980M ever hit 1550Mhz+ you will notice the example given by Johnksss is a biased example, the tests were not on the same machine, they were not given the same attention, and they were not even done the same day.
He took his best 980M clock/test in 2 years of playing with it, and compared it to a 2 minute setup for a 1060 with no real love or even driver support or any tweaks. At least to be fair, that is what it looks like to me. My guess, is there is something to gain from all of this, but he deliberately tried to confuse people for some odd reason.

1060N is more powerful then 980M, and produces less heat. However - they are actually very similar too, in performance, but the 1060N should relatively be at the minimum 10% faster by it's stock speeds/stats alone, but in actuality is even faster because of the efficiency of the core too.

yeah that is...almost double the price. I do not recommend buying it from vendors selling it with 300-400$ USD profit margins.

It should be no more then 700USD shipped, if I estimated for peeps in the USA.

No, this is NOT Eurocom's Ebay.

One of the sales managers of Eurocom operates the store called Razor's Edge, that is Eurocom.

If you are unsure who Eurocom is, just send me a PM I can help you. I would link it, or even my own store, but I have been asked by the moderator team NOT to link them in threads or posts like this that I did not start, or has nothing to do with sales. Respect for resellers and such. Even if they give you loaded comparisons.

Anyways the guy linked has no affiliation with Eurocom, and he's used pictures of mine from various forums and sites before, and generally attempts to rip people off. Using my pics pissed me off, but made me realise he was a scamming peeps. This might also be why it seemed at some point he had the same stock as me but yet he is in china.

Ebay doesn;t require the picture to be the exact product, so you can always get away with the cheaper chinese versions and yet use a picture of the North American cards. For the record, I'm in Canada/North America.

    LOL, right ?

Yeah, sorry again, I do not know why Johnksss made that post, it was unlike him, but the 980M is not superior in performance. The 1060N is not a next gen version of the 960M/965M either, because the 1060N is really more like the next gen or the desktop 970 which it is more powerful than.

Hummm, yet another one not looking at what is being presented. First of all it's not utter BS, but you not taking the time to understand it is.
Usually your more inquisitive at fact checking than most, but this time seems to not be the case.

And this kick about using the cpu as a crutch is seriously not you. When I can do it with a dual core and still beat his gpu score. Since that was all i was talking about.

Now lets go re look at what you missed with my "bias" examples.
Only talking about gpu scores only. As previously mentioned

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10537560
Had you really went and looked you would see that 2063/2032
Core Speed * 2063 (Boost) MHz
    Memory Speed * 8032 MHz

is no where remotely close to being stock.

    Core Speed * 1506 - 1708 (Boost) MHz
    Memory Speed * 8000 MHz

So I'm not sure how much faster you think it's suppose to run.

As a matter of fact, they are all over clocked because I took the highest number from everyone. I don't go cherry picking scores to make points. I pick the highest. And those three were the highest.

And as I already mentioned before. Stock vs stock the 1060N wins 100 percent of the time, but yet that was missed as well. No problem
I see lots of excuse making and that is perfectly fine. And when I get a 1060N for testing I'll know what it's suppose to do vs using someone else's examples. Since I have an idea or two how I think it should run.

As to your 2 year 980M crack. When I finally got around to getting 980M's, is when you all found out what they were really suppose to do. And that took all of 2 hours, not 2 years.

Here you go. @Mr. Fox score.

As of now I don't see 980M -> 1060 upgrade worth. Offering a minimal performance boost for again $700+ MSI taxed card which is hard to source & just doesn't make any sense over that MSI card working with other MXM3.0b machines is a complete gamble I'm talking about EC Fan control etc, vBIOS is whole another pandoras box. Imho It's waste of everything at this moment. Better wait for the new RX485 /RX490s and let the dust settle to make an upgrade to those who are willing to.

Oh I'm sorry I didn't read everypage of this thread, if you mentioned the 1060N beats it at stock. I suspected you were suggesting the 980M beats it stock. Alright my apologies.

The two tests are not similar enough to compare. If I use my 6700K at 4.5Ghz vs 4.0Ghz or vs an older ivy bridge 3610MQ I get drastically different results with even the same GPU.
If you are trying to show what's possible with the 980M - well, I will say that is a VERY impressive Overclock, it by itself would have made a more useful thread on it's own, then even being compared to the 1060N at the moment (Because in the case they were not similar benches, only)

for the record, no more issues sourcing the new cards. Have MSI 1060/1070 and clevo variants...The RX485 won;t even beat the 1060N if I had to guess... AMD doesn't do the top end, it does the middle tier and below now, it seems. (though I sincerely hope I'm wrong)

they will be up in the store once the site is running, and the store is not in it's absolute infancy. Will be sourcing to other vendors and resellers too. If anyone wants to see these cards up somewhere, just say the word and I'm sure it will get done. If you want them up on NBR in the component for sale thread, just ask, and I will throw whatever is most popular up there for a discount for NBR members only.

if anyone has any suggestions for a nicer looking store, let me know : https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/9-nvidia-gtx-1060-6gb-mxm-msi.html probably won't be finished this year to be honest, too busy doing other stuff, but after seeing the lack of info and questions and concerns, I thought I should start populating a site with some info... even if just a very rough info.

Guess this context makes more sense. Overclocking is Johnksss thing too... trying to beat his overclocks is like trying to knife fight a UFC fighter in a ring. "he's still going to kill you..."

It was to show that it could beat a 1060N, but it does not beat a 1070N nor a 1080N. And that goes for MXM or BGA. Heck, my BGA 1070 is beating just about everyone, so that kills the theory about bga not being up to par with MXM.

And to be fair. There is no way to get other results for a 1060N setup at the moment. And using Mr Fox's score which is using a 4790K does show older cpu does not matter.

You are also right, it's still an upgrade, but is it really worth going through the effort to make it work. This is for the people who don't want to tinker..... People like us.....Let the tinkering begin.

Ok, i about fell out of my chair on this one. :D

    Exactly!

Depends on the point of view, but whatever, I want RX480/E9550 MXM-B. Any chance that we'll see it for sale?

I for one never said, and would never do so, that BGA is totally crippled and be done with it. I've said that (mostly) the implementation is crippled and then the packaging itself has a few limitations. Given the same components, performance would be the same. Again, there are limitations/drawbacks, but the same is valid for MXMs as well, so let's not turn it into BGA vs slots and sockets as it is the case lately. Whatever I want my RX480/E9550 MXM-B!

I get AMD in stock, but it never sells so I dump it ASAP before being stuck with it for years.... so if it's carried in stock, it won;t be a regular thing or it will be limited. Thing is, AMD always hyped up how powerful thier cards were the last 3 generations and yet they were so disapointing, a mid tier card from NVidia not only had more features and greater support is even cost less, lasted longer, was easier to source and sold 10,000% more. When you know it's out for certain, give me a shout and I will see what I can do. I might have to even make you wait 1-2 weeks. just heads up.

ATM, I'm more interested in people who want to take it upon themselves to test MSI 1060N and test 1070N (by modding thier laptops, of course). Willing to make good deals for people willing to make a video, takes some pictures and explain thier concerns and difficulty and write up a how-to. Got 1 person about to try a 1070N in an Alienware AW17. He modified his laptop so it would fit. Keep your fingers crossed (we suspect it will work fine, placing 9:1 odds in favor of it working..but facing usual modified driver reqs etc..)

The 1060N is for sure less of a stretch. But don't go showing interest in these cards now - soon as e went to check stock, price was increased by our interest in it, by over 100$ and then within the same day another 100$+ just by the time I went to order stock. The main suppliers are greedy and will start trying to charge insane prices. Worst part is, I know their cost, and they lie straight to my face suggesting they are not making money on the cards, when their selling them for 300$+ profit. It's friggin sickening how brutally opportunistic this laptop industry is. You might vomit if you knew what DELL's profit margins were, but Clevo's are in the same ballpark, with 40% markups and more on complete models. If I could afford to place an order for 300 units at a time, I'd practically be able to sell them half price ! Course they also want 3 months payment in advance, with 300 models purchased each month.. i.e 900 laptops.... so 370,000$ USD for 900x P750 models barebones. I have barely half that in savings. So maybe oneday - or I secure a loan. But not before I know for certain there is enough customers out there to fill that demand in 3 months... but man wouldn't it be nice to just undercut the competition by 25% as a "screw you" for trying to charge me so much, and rip me off!~

You know, it was even worse years ago - honestly - they were charging the same crazy prices, but the service and knowledge was lacking, and the hardware sold would always die. Made after market upgrades the worst possible solution, yet they still managed to get wealthy and profit from it, whilst so many people, like us, got burnt. everyone here, I'm sure has a story where they tried to reach someone for support and never got a reply back or just quick 1 liners from an uninsterested person responding for the sake of it, just to say " there we tried - go away now". I swear it, I really mean to change this industry, I don't care how long it takes, but it really grinds my gears how so many sellers have such bad service and over charge. Alienware was originally a well priced and respected company - and seems the larger corp bought them out to shut down the competition. If in 10 years from now, I some how find a way to deliver hardware and better service and such - I'm not selling out, I will try and make those larger companies who are so comfortable bleed, even if it takes me 50 years. mark my words ! (course you'd have to follow me for 50 years ~ sounds like a rant of an adventure !)

One is in China and charging more in USD then the other is in CAD. Also note : if your in China, you get free shipping, because the government will pay it for you. But why not squeeze a few extra dollars for the sake of greed , right ? The rest of the world is 100% accustomed to paying shipping, and not smart enough to know better. Derp. That's what pisses me off about Chinese sellers.
Anyways so let the games begin.

    Anyways - enjoy.

    So did I.

Well, GeCube's 150W RX480 is already out, while AMD's E9550 (95W RX480) is expected around the holidays. I guess a lot more people would be interested in the later, myself including.

(^ *saying the same just continues differently*) people blame AMD for everything, while giving nGREEDIA a pass for everything. I was going to make a small write-up, but let's keep it clean. Getting AMD to equal playing field is where the change would start to happen. Without competition, we are out of luck. Proof? Just look around, it would get worse.
