Is that enough to maybe live off of for awhile ?

I'm wondering if it will fit to my p377sm-a....after modding..??
-
Does it have SLI connector? I can't tell if that black thing in the spot is one or not.
Also can you or someone else please get the calipers out and measure exactly the overhang on the left side and the little tab on the right this will very important for people who want to measure up their slot to see if it will fit or what they would need to cut to make space? -
All the 3.0b machines are tight fit, they cannot fit the card even with the broader width of the right side of the card, AW17, 18, M18x /17x, 377SM-A, P7xxZM,DM, Precision, HP workstations I no laptop can fit that card I don't know about the MSI GT80 and GT72 I presume they are also out of this league, So that tab is another feat from MSI to the MXM3.0b owners, disrespecting the modular market of the laptops.
And no SLI, the solder point is there but even if one manages to get it soldered they might be also needing to add some extra circuitry to the chipset to make it work (hardcore mods)
Hell even the Eurocom Tornado F5 the LGA MXM machine doesn't have space to fit the MSI 1080 both SLI version and aux power version, Only max that could go is 7700K that's it in the MSI barebones.
MSI really has the resources and power to make them 3.0b but nope they won't, Even a damn reduced power GTX1070 would be a boon to the old machines but no, they even backed out their promise and god knows what's happening with that trade-in program of them...Really a shame, This disaster struck the laptop market. I don't expect Clevo machines to be upgradeable with the Volta, Just be happy with them atleast you got the top of the line with MXM / LGA, Prema.
The only thing that could change this is VEGA & MXM based off that, given the TDP history of the Polaris It shattered my hopes. Still I'm praying to god that atleast one version of Vega should make it to the 3.0b standard.Last edited: Oct 28, 2016Solo wing likes this. -
not reduced power, most likely reinforced mxm power line since they don't want to deal with extra mobo design
the GT83VR still uses (a somewhat) identical motherboard as the GT80S and GT80, no power input -
Isn't the TDP of the card limited to 130W /150W tops for the GT80 Maxwell ? And similarly the Pascal too, Clevo's Pascal cards are 200W and 180W/200W too for Maxwell full desktop class and more powerful than desktop class with Maxwell iirc Wouldn't that translate to the more higher clocks, I'm guessing here since I don't have that much idea on these numbers.
And I was saying that a reduced low TDP card should suffice for the 3.0b slot to make the old machines scream.. -
The 1070 form factor is completely identical to the GT80 980, I believe. I'd wager that they would be a drop-in replacement if the EC power limit wasn't capped too low. Same goes for the other GT80s, since they have identical layouts. They will probably also fit in the GT72S 980.
-
Example, problem areas for master slot p370em
And slave: (note card isn't flat as I didn't want to remove heatsink)
Note the awesome solder job on the 7970M.
P37xSM I believe is the same.
Not a lot of cutting, but a few screws would be lost. Then there's the issue of the SLI cable which is one thing actually in AMD's favour (cableless xfire over PCIe bus).
Also, I would need to swap out the LVDS panel + cable for eDP.
I'd be willing to do it as I got the unit so cheap I wouldn't cry too hard if I killed it. But not if I'm buying MXM cards at retail price ......Last edited: Oct 28, 2016Prema and i_pk_pjers_i like this. -

two things : 1) What the heck is with the flux all over the components on your card ????
2) if you like, I would be 100% willing to take my dremel and carefully remove the problem area's for you make a video of it, and test and install a MSI 1070N to see the results. You'd have to ship it to me though and give me a week.
I woiuld even epoxy some parts to give the fan a way to sit and screw into the chassis still where it would have the part it connects to removed. But this is all in the love of after market upgrading. Not for everyone - but for those who LOVE modding, most of you would want to do it yourself I imagine haha -

Guy on chinese dell forum with AW m17xr4 - ( Ivy Bridge ) got gtx1060 running in his old laptop.
Does anyone knows anything about this display - LG LGD02DA . Is it LVDS or EDP?

Woodzstack I will PM you later today.
Hmm. The R4 has both LVDS and eDP ports. While I can't find the exact part number match for that panel I couldn't find a variant of the 173WF1 (panels used in the R3 and R4) that wasn't LVDS.
It may be able to display through LVDS because Optimus - the IGP is what is handling the output to screenMarioPavlovich likes this. -
The question is how ? plus even if, what brand is the mxm used ? vbios mod ? more info from people who understand chineese
-
Only thing I can find even close for you to reference on that display.
http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/LGD02C5/
Looks to me like its a 120hz (edp) display. But the revision numbers arent all that close... still. I have been reading and researching this since well before the launch of the 1060 and 1070 and it appears edp is still the only option witht the new cards.
-
I don't know for sure but suspect LG D02DA is a dell part #. Not the panel model #. What I am sure of, is that screeny is NOT of a 3D / 120hz panel, because they don't (can't?) use Optimus and the HD4000 would not be there.
-
Ya the more I think about it I think you may be right. Optimus would be the only way the intel gpu would be active... now you have inspired the hamster... lol I'll try to report back if I learn more...

So basically in the M17x R4 optimus only works with non 120hz and 3D screens and thus it seems the 1060 is powering the LVDS display? Is this on the right track? If yes then this is a positive development! Even though the heady price tag of USD 700 isn't!
Last edited: Oct 30, 2016TomJGX likes this. -
LGD02DA is the pnp id as used in the panel's edid. Have two versions, both from a LP173WF1-TLB3, which is a non-3D/non-120Hz, 2-channel, 40-pin LVDS panel. Pretty much the standard for every 1080p LVDS display (and the 900p+1200p varieties).
Now, it is possible that the same id was used for LVDS and eDP panels alike (although it shouldn't). A complete copy of that edid would clinch it; it lists the interface type amongst its property list. Chances are it is what it claims to be; a TLB3 and, hence, LVDS.
Yes, it works because the system's PCH, Panther Point, supports Flexible Display Interface with 'Legacy' output, transcoding DP input from the CPU to VGA and LVDS. So ... Optimus+LVDS is a go, then ... * :
* ... provided the system is connected like this; MXM's PEG (= PCIe Graphics) -> Intel HD -> PCH -> LVDS. For instance, the Clevo P170EM could work, according to its schematics. -
RX 480 mxm 3.0b works msi gt70??
-
Striker1234 Notebook Consultant
It should if you are running your scren over eDP... -
Almost there, I already made a post about this and it works because the 1060 doesn't display anything at all. The framebuffer from the 1060 gets copied to the Intel IGPU which then displays this image, and so why this works.
So yeah a RX480 could do the same trick if it can be run in Enduro mode.TomJGX likes this. -

Doesn't help those of us without optimus or endure
but it is still a positive development.

that means MSI GT60 series is still alive... in condition that there will be enduro/optimus vbioses available

Only the 3D Version which came with the 120Hz panel. So basically the Clevo P570WM3.
-
Awesome, the one im looking at does have the 120hz panel. Now i only need to know if the 10XX cards will work in them before i bite the bullet and buy one
-
Nope, they won't! Except you're willing to do some really nasty hardmods.
Best bet at the moment ist the AMD RX480 aka E9550, which should be out Q1 2017. -
old M17xR4 can install MSI GTX 1060 MXM.
an MSI GTX 1060 MXM is 3500yuan ~~ 517.54 USD(google) (free delivery in china of course)
it should also work on older clevo laptops with LVDS as long as it has IGP. (Chinese users have successfully installed MSI GTX 1060 in P150EM)
P150EM 1060 link: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/4840318726 (just look at pictures)

MSI GTX 1070 MXM should work in Old P870DM and MSI laptops which
supported GTX 980 ( not 980m). including MSI 16L1. (not really sure about hardware mod and EC signalling stuff but they do fit inside these models)
About Gecube's RX480 - P751ZM/DM P177SM/A screen not lit up.
Currently, Gecube have gotten the feedback from testers and they have sent the problem to AMD so that they can solve the EDID problem.
They are currently making standard GTX 1060/1070 MXM as well.

What is the new shape/connector of the cards called ? Are they 'standard' between vendors or do they differ ? e.g. are are the new cards compatible with the laptops that had the "desktop" 980M ?
-
The new cards uses MXM 3.0b but they have different size. so theoretically if you could fit the new MXM cards into your laptop, it should work.Last edited: Nov 3, 2016

Not exactly as some have this additional power connector thingy that could also cause issues.
Nope pretty much forget trying to shoehorn a Ngreedia card in. This is clearest proof that Nvidia and OEMs were getting tired of people daring to upgrade their machines.
They did their best to make MXM cards of old incompatible (usually OEMs took care of that) with unnecessary bios blocks etc but now they have decided to create odd shaped cards that of course can't be used.
Iam pretty sure Volta will change again...let's see.
P.S and then there is the whole issue of LVDS. Any machine that is older than 2 years will face considerable difficulty upgrading to a Pascal and probably Polaris based card due to only eDP being supported.Ashtrix likes this. -
Agreed. i would probably just switch out to a Volta laptop by then,

To end the confusion, the IGP and Optimus Enduro are not a ticket to make them work. The thing is eDP if your laptop has eDP it will work else nope, End of story.
The 170EM & R4 is making it possible with the LVDS is it because of the PCH of the Panther Point as said in the prev page ? And is it unique to that PCH or Lynx Point gets some of the feature set as well ?
Idk why the 7xxZM are not firing up, maybe BIOS update needed ? or they used an older chipset of the ZM which doesn't have the eDP port / 60Hz only ?
Also hope the Gecube makes this 3.0b 1070N !! And Zotac kit is really interesting...ooh..

I wouldnt mind cutting the plastic no, aslong as its only that and nothing to do with software
-
Ya everyone thought only way for 10series to work is to have an eDP monitor, but those older laptops with LVDS monitors somehow were able to use 1060. So, everyone figured that as long as you have IGP+LVDS it would work (no one knows for sure what is going on)
The 7xxZM series tested were using eDP monitors. From what i know, only the 770ZM series have an older batch of chipset that didnt have eDP port.
Everyone including me is hoping that the 1070 3.0b is going to work, at least we can try flashing MSI/Clevo VBIOS to try.Ashtrix likes this. -

This is nothing new, those clevo cards are not 3.0b they are physically bigger and all even the 1060 need a power connector.
The msi cards are smaller, although still bigger than the standard 82mm W x 105mm H, their 1070 doesnt need a power connector, their 1080 is largely unsighted but looks like it doesn't either, but it remains to see how tdp gimped they are.Last edited: Nov 4, 2016 -
I do wonder if one can hook up a ghetto power supply to the power connector..
