I am not expert, but from what I have read so far, the HD 2600 is overclockable to match, or be similar to, the HD 2600 XT.

Just note that most, literally 95%(okay so I made that figure up), of notebooks use the HD 2600 rather then the HD 2600 XT. Even if it says it is the HD 2600 XT, it most likely isnt - many places are known to have "typos" about this. There are very few notebooks that actually use the HD 2600 XT.

The XT has GDDR3 so it's memory speeds can go to the ATI speced 700MHz (though OEMs will probably lower this). The core on the other hand is the same though the XT ones are probably cherry picked to run at that speed. Sometimes though you get a core like mine which I run safely at 732 but with a cooler have taken up to 762.

Not even close ... the 9600m GT will dominate the ATI 3470 ... and the 9600 should run all those games you mentioned just fine.

I hate to jump in on this but I don't want to start a new thread just for a similar question.

How does the 9600GT (hp dv5t) compare to the 8600 GT DDR3 (m1530)? I previously used the xps m1530 with the 8600 GT with DDR3 and wondered how it stacked up against the 9600GT which I think is only DDR2.

The 9600m GT runs games very smoothly. Even crysis will run fairly well on medium- low settings. The Sager np2096 is a computer I recommend with that card. XD

Yeah I looked at the 2096 for awhile but I think I've finally settled on the hp dv5t. I wanted maybe a newer m1530 but I can't wait till October for a laptop.

Also It's Always Sunny is the best show ever.

Off the top of my head I believe that the 9600GT is superior as the equal comparison to the 8600GT DDR3 is the 9600 GS.

Really? I screwed that up then since I thought the 9600 GS was much worse than the 8600GT DDR3. I'm not to worried since all I play on PC is Portal and TF2. A little UT3 but I'm not worried about its graphics since I can still go back to UT2004. :)

Going by benchmarks the 9600m GT DDR2 is equal to the 8600m GT GDDR3.

There's alot of mid-range gpu's out right now which, performance wise, are all within 20% of eachother so there's no point in upgrading from one to the other.

Very low end card. Will barely do for casual gaming. Think integrated level.

It's around the level of the new X4500 and will play all but the most demanding games with low details and resolutions...
According to those benchmarks it's the equivalent of the 8400m G! Which is conciderably slower than the 8400m GS but will still have a chance to play the most demanding games at 640 x 480 on low.

It's a new card though so it still remains to be seen how it will handle newer games:\

How does the ATI HD 3450 compare with the GeForce 8400m GS? Pretty similar? I won't likely be running anything newer than FEAR, but Bioshock would be nice.

the 9600gt ddr3 is slightly more powerful than the 8600gt ddr3. The same can be said for 9600gt ddr2 vs 8600gt ddr2 cards.

The differences comes out to be about ~5 real fps increase in game, which can make a difference in games where you're hovering around the barely playable line. But in most cases the differences wont be significant.

*Note the 9600 series consumes less heat, which makes them more over-clockable.

When it comes down to it, always pick 8600mgt ddr3(256) over 9600mgt ddr2 cards (even if its a 512mb card).
But pick 9600gt ddr3 over the older 8600 counterpart.

Okay Ill go with the 8600gt then beacuse its a:

    8600gt ddr2(256mb) VS. 9600gt ddr3(512mb)

    Thanks!

No, you miss understood what I meant. What i said was that you should always pick 8600gt ddr3 cards over 9600gt ddr2 cards even if the 9600gt ddr2 card has 512mb of memory whereas the 8600gt ddr3 will only have 256. DDR3 memory is much fast and will yield much improved in game performance.

If your card is the ddr3 version of the 9600 series, you should go with that.

Yeah, it is. WileyCoyote's got it right, there's just a slight misinterpretation issue here. Just to be sure there's no confusion, the order is, with the best coming first:

    9600 GT DDR3
    8600 GT DDR3
    9600 GT DDR2
    8600 GT DDR2

Regardless of memory amount. Though if you have two choices that are the same type (model and DDR type) then of course take the higher memory amount.

i haven't looked at the specs for these cards specifically, but also take note of the bandwidth (bit rate) of the card. A 256mb card with 512 bitrate should be faster than a 512mb card with 265bitrate.

    ......correct me if I'm wrong?

So I have a vaio FE series with 7600go (only 128 memory wise) and a T7200 2.0GHz Core2 CPU. Would the FW series with P8600 (2.4GHz) and ATI 3470 (256) be any upgrade (or even a downgrade) to my performance? I only play game like WoW and Warhammer online (FE plays fine).

The laptop in question is this one:

Bandwidth is measured from 3 things:
Bus width (in bytes not bits) x memory speed x 2 (DDR = double data rate)

The 3470 is more of a sidegrade; a little worse in older games, a little better in shader intensive games. The processor on the other hand will give you a boost in RTS games like warhammer.

You can find better gaming machines for a similar price... the screen on the other hand

Bus width IS measured in bits (128 bit, 256 bit, etc.) but the bandwith is measured in MB/s.

Ok, but in caluclating theoretical bandwidth you have to multiply the bus width in bytes(divide by 8) by the memory clock then by 2 if it's DDR...
Was it the word measured that threw you off :D Measured.. calculated.. blah :p

It didn't throw me off. I actually understood what you meant. Just wanted to point it out. Chronic nitpicker (or something). Technically, the bandwith is also measured in Mb/s. You just convert it into MB/s for easier handling.

    Nice topic !
    Very useful.
Do you think about adding something on recent heat issues with g84M and g86M nvidia GPU especially inside laptops ?
I am very concerned about that at the moment because I am giving advice to a friend about his future laptop...
If anyone has enough information to give me an advice, would it be to erase all G84M and G86M of my possible choices ?
I would then think about 9600M GS or GT, or Radeon HD 3650. All of them in 15"4 laptops for better performances, or in 17" laptops if prices are interesting enough.
I have made a selection of few models, here they are :

    Range 800-850€ (sorry I'm not american ;)
    HP Pavilion dv5-1010ef intel P7350 - nvidia 9600MGT 15"4
    HP Pavilion dv7-1035em intel P7350 - nvidia 9600MGT 17"

    900€
    Toshiba Satellite P300-1AP intel P8400 - radeon HD3650 17"
    Toshiba Satellite A300-1IW intel P8400 - radeon HD3650 15"4
    Acer Aspire 5930G-844G32Mn intel P8400 - nvidia 9600MGT 15"4

    1080€
    Asus M50VM-AS010C intel P8600 - nvidia 9600MGS 15"4 (but 1440*900)

I'm torn between two notebooks, it's Intel Vs AMD and NVidia Vs ATI

I'm looking for good gaming performance, I'm not buying a top spec notebook so not expecting the best performance, just an upgrade from my current ATI X1700
And just not sure which is gonna be best for me! I mainly play say COD4 and other FPS games if that helps, and here are the notebooks in question too!

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220366
    and
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220349

I didn't realise the 3650 was such an old card, and I read that the ATI is close to the 9500, is the 9600 any further apart?

    Cheers!

The Ati 3650 is close to the 9500M GS/8600M GT as you said.
The 9600M GS is somewhat superior to the 3650 because it has a much higher shader clock, which does a lot of work in gaming.
Plus, nVidia would give you better dirvers and updates.
However, do not expect more than ~8 FPS difference between the two, which is not noticeable. Please take other things into considerations (price, cpu, ...) to decide which system you should go with.

Thanks guys, top advice here, I'm pretty much sold between the two notebooks I posted, and the good thing is the ATI equipped notebook is a third of the price, I gotta take that into consideration!

Swell9, I'm not buying the notebook just on it's GPU But every book so far fills my needs perfectly, I'm just spending extra time now fine tuning my choice! It's gotta last a good year or two so best get it right!

Well I believe the 9600M GS Is a G96 core, which isn't listed by the INQUIRER as defective.

On top of that, the 9600 runs very cool (some people say 69 degrees at max load playing crysis, in a hot room!) so even if it were, it wouldn't be as affected as much.

that is a mild consideration, but seeing as the 9600 still look to be in the clear, not going to let that dissuade me.

Nd the ATI looks to have much better tech in terms of die size, so would imagine temps would be fine too

Theres more head room to overclock a 9600m gs, you might want to take that into consideration if you're planning to overclock. There more driver support for Nvidia cards so thats also a plus. But otherwise the hd 3650 for a third of the price is a steal.

That is a really tough call! I'd say that each option falls perfectly in line with its price point, with a minuscule edge in value going to the AMD system.

Either system would easily power through normal notebook usage, and gaming-wise both can do COD4 justice.

I have an 8600m GT, I really like it. But my experience with drivers was actually a little smoother when I was using an ATI x800m in my old Alienware. I don't know if ATI supports mobile drivers off their website anymore, but it was really nice just going there and installing rather than having to go through laptopvideo2go.com for Nvidia mobile drivers.

I can't say either system would be a bad choice! I am not an over-clocker, so that doesn't really factor into it for me. If I knew a little more about how the CPUs stacked up, I suppose that would help (I'm assuming the Intel P8400 is at least 5% faster).

yeh its really a tough call between AMD and Nvidia at this point. Most AMD cards run well on its own @ stock speeds and with Nvidia cards you almost feel the tempation to overclock since its so easy. Thats probably the downside to having an Nvidia card: hours of searching for the best driver and fine tunning your clocks.

But Im guessing that money should be an issue here cause if it isnt you should be looking for a 9600m gt ddr3 at least.

Okay, so I just got off the phone with a Lenovo sales representative, and he told me that the Lenovo T500 laptop came with this GPU:

"ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3650 256mb Flash Memory"

I had no idea that a GPU would use flash memory; based from what I've seen so far, there was DDR2 and GDDR3.

Can someone explain to me where flash memory stands in comparison DDR2 and GDDR3 in terms of performance

I'm currently playing it on my current notebook that's rockin an ATI X1700 horribly unsupported from ATI themselves so it's patched drivers for me anyway, so I'm used to that, and running a mild overclock on it too. So will be clocking these next GPUs whatever, hell it's in my blood!

I'm also guessing perhaps the AMD notebook is going to be easier to overclock the CPU with too?

I know there are a lot of close calls between laptops out there but this has to take the biscuit I think, hard to swing it either way but the 1/3rd rpice difference tips it for me, hopefully getting it soon!

Thanks again for all the advice!

What are the main diferences between these 2?

Should run the same games at different quality levels? Who will be the best and why?

    Thanks

Can anyone tell me what the 9600M GS 512MB from the ASUS M70VM-C1 would be equivalent to in a desktop GPU? I have heaps more experience with desktop GPU's so it's easier for me to compare.
