does anyone know why here ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GT.9449.0.html) it says that the 9600M GT contains gddr2/3 ram. however on xoticpc for the sager np2096 it says that it contains ddr2 memory. which is correct? and if it contains ddr2 memory how much lower will the performance being?

im considering the sager np2096 over the asus because of the memory card and am wondering if it will perform significantly better than the ati 3650hd when they both apparently contain ddr2 ram.

Chaz, I don't see any mentioning of the ATI Crossfire 3870 on that exhaustive list of yours.

The card can come in both but it depends on what the manufacturer want's to put in their laptop so it's DDR2. The 9600m GT is probably a little faster but nothing huge.

Cards like the 9600m gts are way out of my range, i'm looking at an RM-70 with a radeon 3650. I guess this video card would be good enough to play crysis right? What settings?

This laptop would cost about $800, and my parents said its 100 too much. Laptops that are $700 and under all come with either the X3100, 8400gs or Radeon 3100 with the exception of 1 laptop that comes with a radeon 2600xt. The only thing that is turning me away from the 2600xt laptop is the TL-60 processor, compared to the RM-70 and T5750.

Where would they sell laptops with at least a 3650 or 2600 for $700?

    Any thoughts?

You could configured an HP DV5Z w/ an ati 3450 gpu for around $650 after coupons, or a gateway m-6862 from best buy for $750 w/ a hd 2600 gpu and a core 2 duo

Ouch, not gonna be easy below $700...
Play Crysis with a 3650 is ok, without higher settings but ok.
However, the RM-70... I don't know how much it will perform in a game situation.
For sure the GC is the most important for Crysis, but a too slow CPU can slow down the GC performance.
Hope you will find something suitable for this price, and if you do, share it ! :)

oh, i was looking at the gateway, but its only in US, i'm in canada.... so arrgh!!!

I read somewhere that the RM-70 was on par with the T5750 because the rm-70 had a monster 3600mhz fsb but the T5750 had more L2 cache, so they were pretty equal.... and i always thought AMD outperformed Intel if their clock speed was equal...

How can u compare those 2 cards, it makes no sense why don't u compare the latest 8 series card which is 8800 GTX vs 7950. Here the 8800 is superior.

Than u might just say 8400 GS is not as good as thr previus gen 7600+ cards but it makes no sense.

2600XT shouldn't be compared with 3650 either then. 2600XT is last generation's performance card vs. 3650, which is a medium range card now.

Just because ATI has a weird number system doesn't mean 2600XT < a higher numbered version such as 2700.

2600XT is comparable with 8700m GT where as 3650 and 8600m GT get similar ratings

if you are going to be annoyingly pedantic about it, i will explain, peoples rational on here is that JUST because it is a newer card means that is better and the example i provided shows that that is false. Please read more contextually next time

Zijin: To put it simply: AMD processors used to perform better at the same clock speed, now Intel performs better.
    And i would recommend a 3650 over a 2600.

Just curious I found a coupon deal where could get an HP over a Gateway. Both have 2ghz core 2 duos (but the HP has a newer gen version i think), gateway would have 4gb ram and 2gb in the HP. Same HDD. 9600mGT 512mb card in the HP and hd 2600 512mb in the gateway. HP runs $50 higher then the gateway after taxes n everything. Worth it? If it's only 5% or 10% better then I dunno if I'd wanna bother. recommendations?

the 9600m gt will smoke the 2600. With the RAM, it is really easy to upgrade anyway. Not the same case with video cards (go with the hp).

yea i figured that. only thing that worries me is i've read the HP DV5t computers w/ that 9600gt get like VERY hot. Like uncomfortably hot even on the mousepad. Read that about the DV5z's too actually. Do HP's just in general suck at heat control?

uh..where did you hear that from? I own a DV5z and haven't experienced that. I also owned a HP laptop before my current one and while it was terribly noisy, it didn't have a heat problem. my DV5z does get warm when I ran demanding applications but not extraordinarily.

They should be at the same level.

    It goes 9600m GT GDDR3>8600m GT GDDR3>9600m GT DDR2>8600m GT DDR2.

and since it also goes 8600m GT GDDR3>HD2600 GDDR3>8600m GT DDR2, they should be on the same level.

Thanks so much! So you wouldn't recommend spending $50 extra to get the "current gen" 9600 ddr2 as opposed to the 2600 ddr3? To get the 9600 i'd hafta wait and order thru HP where as a brick & mortal local store has the other one.

Not really, not for the GPU itself.

But there are other factors, like build quality, heat, service etc.

yes u can..use bilinear filtering turn dynamic lights and shadows off..max everything else

and dude the hd2600 gddr3 is pretty stinking good...if you overclock it to about 580/650 you will have stable settings and get much improved performance...i can get pretty darn good results ..

    edit ..

and my sig is complete bs much like the others in the forum with 8600mgt gddr3
dont believe everything u see or read online, i did my research and the hd2600 has alot of strong points dude, read up on unified stream proccessors and tell me if 120 sp is good...the hd2600 has 120 vs 32(8600mgt-9600mgt ect)..
you are just going to have to max the settings that dont effect your card harshly ...like aa

Ryane the HD2600 has 120 single dimension spu's and the 8600 and it's clones all have 5 dimensional spu's. So in that respect Nvidia wins :D

But performance wise the 8600m GT and HD2600 perform similarly, the 9600m GT beats both.

dude yes of course...but all settings dont matter...some dont make it look better but cost frames...so its up too u...I have a wickedly good hd2600 and i get 20-30 fps everything maxed on avg..i just turn down shadows and dynamic lights..and the framerates soar..the shadows in the game look crappy anyways...btw i played and beat that game...i loved it..blew me away...

crysis blew me away at medium settings but played to slow...but now i can play it veryhigh and now i know why people are tlaking about it soo much..i cant believe how far videogames have come since the genesis days...i was happy and had fn playing sonic the hedgehog...but now..hola crap are games looking photo realistic..doesnt make it funner but helps ..

cod4 took me in like no other game since shenmue on dreamcast...especially on that sniping level where u are heading to assasinate that dude...it's really well done..lol after talking about it i might just play it...haha im going to be so much better at typing by the time im done making my crysis cocnfig for the mid range cards

First off, I am sure they mean MOBILE gpu's...

Second off, there is absolutely, positively, unequivocably NO WAY that a 128-bit, 120GFlop 9600M GT is even going to TRY to keep up with a 256-bit, 371GFlop ATI HD3850, much less the 422 GigaFLop HD3870.

The mere suggestion is ignorant - it wouldn't even be a contest!

Now, if you wanna rack it up a notch, compare the 3850/3870 with the Nvidia 8800M GTX / 9800M GT / 980M GTX, well THEN you will have some competition...
And no, I'm NOT an ATI fanboy, well, yeah, I kinda' am, but I just ordered a Gateway P-6860FX with an 8800M GTS, so I'm not like a TOTAL fanboy :D

    Bottom line -

If you DON'T have a clue, do NOT post nonsense, it is REALLY detrimental to the purpose of this forum, which is to HELP people. Spreading misinformation is worse than the person not getting an answer to begin with.

    The M-6851 I had here for a week, had a T5550/4GB/250GB/HD2600+512Mb DDR3.

Stock clocks on the ATI were 500/600, and I was able to run stable at 621/748, right around 4000 or so 3DMark06 (1280x1024, not 1280x800)
    A 2600XT is 700/750, and a 2700 is 700/700

    And a 3650 is NOT a higher-clocked 2600 - the 2600/2700 series has an RV630, the 3650 has an RV635.

Sorry for the separate post, but wanted this link a little more visible.

Check here for a comparison of the 3850/3870/3870 x2/4850/4870 against Nvidia's best.

I don't know what the firingsquad link was, but I think Anandtech would have a LITTLE more clout...

As you can see, except for the absolute top-line Nvidia cards costing $100-200+ MORE than the ATI, or Nvidia in SLI, the 4870 rules.
Especially when you're saving $100-200 smackers.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled MOBILE gpu thread....

Well, the only single gpu that can be had for significantly more than the 4870 is the GTX 280, which can be found for around $400. The GTX 260 can be found for as low as $250AR. While the 4870 does the beat the GTX 260, people with that have Nvidia boards will probably want to SLI the GTX 260s rather than getting a new board and GPU. Also, the 9800GX2 while based on an older technology beats the HD 4870 for maybe a bit more depending on rebates. Otherwise you hit the nail on the head.

Which one is faster at the same resolution (same CPU etc)?

Does anyone have game benchmarks between the two?

I'm not really interested in 3d mark scores.

The 9300 GS is the same as the 8400 GS so the 3470 is better.

Thanks for the pointer but, as I said, I'm looking for in-game benchmarks.

So I don't know if you actually read my questions ;)

    Furthermore, I'm looking for a comparison between HD3470 with 128mb vs. 9300GS with 256mb.

Well about your first question, I'm not sure if there are any benchmarks(yet). Though the 9300GS should be similiar to the 8400GS.

And as other people have stated, 128mb vs 256mb shouldn't have too much difference because system RAM can be allocated. And according to what I've been reading lower end cards can't use all the ram effectively(I'm not sure about this statement though).

    My 2 cents:
Both have 64-bit bus widths so any more than 128mb of ram wont be of much use for games.
Both will play games on similar settings, with a few frames going either way depending on the game.

I know that the 9600M GT is better than the 8600M GS, but by how much? Does anyone have any numbers or benchmarks or anything?

    Thanks.

The 9600 will be faster and should (in thery) run cooler and take less power.
Look at Tom's Hardware or google GPU benchmarks.

I give up, Google has failed me. What does the term "IntelJ" mean exactly? As in:

IntelJ Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    vs
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

It's something to do with international systems, apparently, since the terminology isn't used on U.S. sites (Dell anyway). You'd think they're the same, but I've seen some configurations where you can choose between the two! That implies they're different.

    Thanks

What newer (better/faster) than 8600m GT DDR3 GPUs have the same, or even smaller footprint? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate that!
